[newbie] 3dfx card and MESA

I am unable to get the MESA (OpenGL clone) demos working on my Voodoo

1. I have downloaded installed the binary rpm's for the Linux Glide

3dfx logo).

2. I have downloaded installed the binary rpm's for the MESA 3.1

I try running the demo programs (do'h!). Could it be a version

Has anyone tried these MESA demos?

Sorry to be the beare of bad news, but you won't get the best out of

that Other Operating System (?) on there so you actually have quite
a bit less that 1.2gb to play with. I've just had a look at my laptop
which has a fairly minimal install on it and that has 600mb of linux

Try and get another drive - I know it will cost some cash but
you'll be much happier in the long run. Perhaps you could find
a second user 2gig somewhere?

Better still junk wind*^ (oops - almost said the Word)

You can use FIPS.EXE (DOS utility that comes on the Mandrake CD) to create a
new partition out of the free space in your existing DOS partition. It's
like a free version of Partition Magic.

The Mandrake installation sets up LILO for you (like a free version of
System Commander).

However, are you using an overlay program (to be able to use a 1.2 GB hard
disk with a 486)? Are you using Ontrack Disk Manager, EZ-Drive, or
equivalent? Do you see a bootup message about this?

Since these overlay programs modify the MBR (master boot record) and shift
all the disk tracks, there may be some risk in using FIPS and LILO.
Definitely back up your data before proceeding if this is the case...

Richard

Re: [newbie] how to get apps on KDE desktop

1999-04-21 Thread Linda Mike

Steve,

I appreciate your wanting to help. I feel at this time very frustrated
with Linux. I have Mandrake 5.3 installed and (hoping) that everything
installed is as it should be.
Anyway, I have a program called ProSplitter and the file name is:
splitv20x_tar.gz. It is currently on a floppy and the one thing that I do
know how to do is get it dropped onto my desktop. All this in KDE. It is
at this point that I am stopped.
I have noticed that a person can click on a filename on the desktop and it
unzips (or untars) at this point, but I suspect that this is not the way to
do the job, but if it were, what do I do next? Do I change to root and try
to find the new directory. I have clicked on the setup files, and for the
most part they come back with what I think is an error telling me that I
cannot do that on local something. I don't remember the wording. There
always seems to be more than one .setup file with different name
endings. How does one know which one to use to create the directory? Or
does unzipping the file create a directory? My husband and I have three
books on Linux and I just don't find what I need to learn this or I am not
understanding what I am looking at. BTW, I never understood all the
commands in DOS either. Was quite grateful for Windows at the time 5 years
ago. I really do want to understand what I am doing in Linux but I am very
confused by it all.

You'll need to create a wrapper script to set LD_LIBRARY_PATH before calling

Then, a script like this should do the trick (name it /usr/bin/rvplayer and
chmod +x /usr/bin/rvplayer after you edit it):

#! /bin/bash

/usr/bin/rvplayer.real $1

Hi, Adam,

I had some problems installing a sound card a while ago on one of my
Linux machines. I think the surest way of getting sound on Linux is to
recompile the kernel with sound support built in. If you're running a
stock Mandrake installation, you have kernel 2.0.36. You should upgrade
to the latest 2.2.x kernel. Have you compiled a kernel before? If not,
it goes like this:

Get kernel source from ftp.kernel.org and place in /usr/src.

tar zxvf kernel.tar.gz [unpacks the kernel source]

Then follow the directions in the newly created /usr/src/linux/README.

I recommend 'make xconfig' instead of 'make config' or 'make menuconfig'
when you get to the kernel options configuration part. For the most
part, you'll just want the default parameters, unless you have any
special devices, like scsi. When you get to the sound part, select
sound card support. Then select support for OSS sound modules. This
will activate the 100% Sound Blaster configuration section. Choose the
appropriate parameters. Compile the kernel, reboot with the new kernel,
and you should get sound. I highly recommend the book Running Linux 2nd
ed. by Welsh and Kaufman (http://www.briansbooks.com has the best prices
I've found on the Internet). I'd be happy to try to answer any other
questions you might have about kernel compiling. OK, good luck,

Hidong

It is definitely not a joke, but it *IS* an alternate mind set. (Not an
altered mind set, an alternate one.)

Basically the argument boils down to, "Microsoft deserves whatever success
they work to create. (And they're very good at it.) If you choose to take
them on, feel free. Best of luck, and such. If you - the Linux community -
become wildly successful as the result of your own work, then you, too,
deserve the success you work to create."

Or to paraphrase Walt Whitman, "Breaking up your neighbor's furniture won't
make your furniture look any better."

Or in street vernacular, "You want to beat Bill Gates? Then quit worrying
about Bill Gates, build a better product, and start worrying about your
 customers."

Excellent. THAT is what the Linux community needs to remember. We didn't
get this far because of the Anyone But Microsoft crowd. We got to this
point because, quite simply, Linux works. And if it happens to work better
than Microsoft's offerings, so much the better!

If it would help, my user is: /home/ladylake

There are installation instruction websites available that will walk you
through the install. Do a websearch for "Linux StarOffice Install" and
something should pop up.

What programs are you trying to install? Are they binaries? .rpm packages?
source .tar.gz packages? We can help, we just need more information!

What do you mean "nothing happens"? Do the demos run? Do they display in a
window or full-screen (there is an environmental variable you have to set to
get them to go full-screen and actually get 3Dfx acceleration)?

I appreciate your wanting to help. I feel at this time very frustrated

Anyway, I have a program called ProSplitter and the file name is:
splitv20x_tar.gz. It is currently on a floppy and the one thing that I do
know how to do is get it dropped onto my desktop. All this in KDE. It is
at this point that I am stopped.

Open a terminal (the monitor looking icon on the bottom panel), and type:

cd Desktop

Then type:

tar zxvf splitv20x_tar.gz

This will open the tarball, probably creating a new directory. 'cd' to that
directory and check for a README or INSTALL file for more instructions.

I have noticed that a person can click on a filename on the desktop and it
unzips (or untars) at this point, but I suspect that this is not the way to

I know this is going to sound bad, but have you considered picking up some

[newbie] Video and Resolution

1999-04-21 Thread Russ Westbrook

Hi All,

I just changed my video card from a Trident SVGA to a Cirrus Logic VLB
card. Linux boots just fine. When I log into KDE it is all messed up.
How do I change the settings? Also, When I installed Linux it asked me
what resolution I wanted to run. If I choose 800 x 600 it gives me 640
x 480 so I am stuck with 1024 x 768 which makes everything too small
on this 14 inch monitor. How can I change the resolution without
reinstalling everything (like ended up doing the last time)?

Thanks
Russ

Hi. When I searched the HP Deskjet support user community forum, a web
site was listed that at least has correct b/w support for the 722C printer

Along with that, with HP saying it will be supporting linux, you should
also log onto the HP deskjet support site, and ask them for a linux driver,
or at least for HP to release the specifications of the PPA printer language
that is used by the 722C, and other HP printers.

I did check for the most up-to-date Ghostscript package and it would
appear that my printer, the HP722c is not supported yet. The HP690's and
the 800's are on the list, but not the 720's. I really hate the idea of
having to buy a new printer just for Linux.

You might try finding updated Ghostscript packages. I know they've done
alot of work supporting HP WinPrinters, so it's possible that you'll be
able to use it under Linux. WinPrinters are a bit different than
WinModems, so they are supported for the most part.

You can find more information about the PPA drivers for Ghostscript at:

http://www.rpi.edu/~normat/technical/ppa/index.html
