[newbie] KDE toolbar icons

1999-11-06 Thread Michal Potoczek

Hi,

I have just installed Mandrake 6.1. Everything is working just fine,
except some kde programs. The problem is about toolbar icons (in most
windows). It looks like icons files were corrupted and instead of icons
I can see some rectangual random bitmaps. Has anyone noticed similar
problem ?

Michal
p.s. I tried to install Mandrake on two diffrent machines (video), so it
propably isn't hardware problem.

Sam,

I enjoyed the graphic, and I have to agree with you the Win2000 is a
several orders of magnitude improvement over previous MS systems. I have
been using Beta 2 release since it came out and have found it to be
quite stable. It was easy to load, never read any documentation but the
readme on the CD, and managed to get it up and running on the internet
in about 90 minutes. I was impressed, and wish that linux was as easy to
install and configure.

The major reason I run Win2K now is I have been unable to use linux as a
gateway to my cablemodem setup. (the other reason is I need to be
familiar with it so I can work with my IT clients). After uncountable
tries, and many thousands of pages of reading, I have been unable to get
mandrake to recognize more that one ethernet card on my server. So,
until I find the magic key I'm stuck with Windows at least for that
particular function.

I think one of the major problems with linux is that so many supporters
are unable to accept that MS products have a place in the greater scheme
of computing. I dislike MS as much as the next person, but I think that
linux is done a great disservice by rabid aficionados who are vehement
in their criticism, and make blanket statements that are not universally
true. Yes Win anything will crash, but so will any other system. Yes its
buggy, and yes it is virtually impossible to make much in the way of
meaningful customization, but it does work and it is pretty brainless.
My experience has been that few computer users care how things work,
they want eye candy and something to get their word-processing done.
Windows provides the eye candy and lets them get their words processed
almost as efficiently as WordPerfect 4.2 did.

Get with the program people, juvenile comments and FUD work in both
directions. If you want to be taken seriously by the computing
community, stop the BS and petty arguments. Think with your brain
instead of your testosterone level. I'm happy to join Sam on the flame
line. He makes sense, most of the flames I've read don't.

 Dear friends:

Perhaps this should have been my first question concerning Java in
 StarOffice 51a:

 Is it worth it?

Is it any better, any more stable than Netscape 4.7's? And is it any
 more global in its reach?

I may have put the cart before the horse. If Java in StarOffice is no
better than Java in Netscape, then why bother? Might as well cut my
losses and forget the whole thing.

First, it would be nice to hear from some people who have actually
succeeded in installing Java in StarOffice and have used it. And can you
both hear and view Java applets on the Web? All of them or some of them?

 What's been your experience?

 Thank you so much.

[newbie] My 2c Worth over NT and Linux

1999-11-06 Thread Grant Slater

Win9x/WinNT/Win2k maybe stable strate after installing but try adding some
buggy 3'rd party drivers (SIS comes to mind) and watch your system BSOD.

Windows is stable if you feed it the right hardware and the best of breed
Drivers. And maybe a genourous helping of CPU and RAM and Harddrive Space.
ONLY then can it start taking some load... Take "www.microsoft.com" for
example it is driven by no less that 12 Compac machines.

Linux is a lot less hungry for hardware. A standard Pentium running Linux
(apache) CAN serve better than the eqiv NT machine (IIS). Linux will also
suffer from a lot less costly downtime than the NT machine.

ftp.cdrom.com it is run on a single machine. (Running netbsd OS, but close
enough)

WinNT 4 has on MAJOR design problem. The video drivers sit inside Kernel
space (To speedup Windows.) So if you have a buggy drivers then BSOD and
down goes the whole system.

Linux's video drivers and X's do not run on the same level as the Kernel and
if they are buggy they do not bring the whole system down.

Side note.
MS Proxy 2 SP1 vs Squid 2.2 (Linux.) Squid beats hands down at the amount of
data it caches and the excellent QOS. "Proxy Report" errors become a thing
of the past. Oh and try get MS Proxy authenticate passwords against a Novel

Squid. Just a simple change in the squid Config file.

DOS, it had a C compiler to build the executables and such.

We were trained on the old Z80 microprocessor.
I also remember Centix, the old business unix then too.

Re: [newbie] Zip drive

1999-11-06 Thread Sysadmin

I have ordered a zip250, which I think uses the same
SCSI card as the regular zip 100.

Hmm, now I know how to set it up during installation,
but is it possible to set it up without running the installer
by just telling it to load the correct driver assuming one
has the directories /mnt/zip250 created
and the moint point in their /etc/fstab file?

Any one had any luck with the Zip Plus?
I have ran the install program several times to get it to see the zip
drive a few times and it never sees it. BTW, this is a Iomega (duh!) Zip
Plus 100 Parallel drive. I have tried all the help files I can find to
get it to go but, all they mention is the Zip Drive. I havn't even seen
a Zip plus in stores for some time now. They all seem to have gone back
to the old Zip drives with the new revisions and I think that is what
 this drive was.

RE: [newbie] MS releases new Windows and NT Keyboard (humor)

1999-11-06 Thread root

I want to agree with Seth here, lets get back to Linux. Here is a dumb
question. What is MESA 3.1? The reason I keep Win98 is so I can play Quake 2
online. Can't wait for more gaming to come to the Linux community.

against the stupid lies here and in the Linux community. If you made an
argument that Linux is better because that's OK. If you start spreading
lies like NT crashes left and right, I know it not to be true.
Key phrase there being "I know it not to be true". Another person's truth
might be totally different, so to call the statement "NT crashes left and right"
a lie might be stepping on someone else's truth. In the case of Windows, it's
really a double edged sword. For some people it works wonderfully, for some it
works not quite as well. Neither one is a lie, they are just things that
different people "know it to be true."

I mean, if we want to slam MS more we could tap a keg at the fact that a
judge just ruled Microsoft a monopoly. But on the other hand, we could
rejoice at the fact that the judge also said that one of the reasons for his
ruling of monopoly is that "there is no viable alternative (to Windows on the
desktop)"', probably including linux. Again the double edged sword, because
this is certainly a statement that many of us linux users "know it NOT to be
 true" to paraphrase.

Personally, i have to go with whoever stated that there is room for both. I
use both and im not going to say one is that much better from a pure user
standpoint. Yes on the technical level i would have a different opinion, but
thats not the point. Some things i just like better under DOS/Win and some
under linux. It's a big world, some use one some use the other. It's all good
 right??

So now back to linux if anyone's read this far. Is there any good DTP
software? Something on the order of Publisher? Also, getting back to games

Re: [newbie] Opening Windows in Virtual Consoles

1999-11-06 Thread David van Balen

You could use vmware (www.vmware.com) to boot either windows from linux or
linux from windows (depending what version you get). I use it to run winNT
under linux and I definitely recommend it.

The only proble I would see if it was possible is hardware confilicts and both
of Linux and Win confused when a piece of hardware is used.
