RE: [RE: [newbie] Linux Format]
Gack... I was off by half! I got confused and was thinking of Maxximum Linux when I quotes $7.95 (ok, ok, I *quoted* $795). Today I went over there to see what was in this month's Linux rags and they had Linux Forum. It was $13.95 (I suppose for consistency that should be $1395) It did come with a CD that included Omnis Studio Lite (db based app developer), Gnome 1.2 and a bunch of other stuff. The magazine seemed to have a lot of decent stuff in it. [newbie] connecting via ppp
I've been unable to get MD 7.1 to log on to my ISP, (open 2.4 will). I posted a message earlier this week about a message in /var/log/messages that said "all had bit 7 set to 0" and it was suggested I add "noauth" to my ppp/options file. Re: [newbie] Can't boot into Windows!
dont ask me why but it works and im sure you have never done this turn your system off!! leave it alone for a couple minutes at least 10 seconds if your impatient and then turn it on, when grub boots try windows, you should be able to boot into windows, for some reason linux affects the hardware in a way windows doesnt like and it will continue to do the same thing over and over again, until you do a cold boot, beleive it or not this works for the vending machine here in the barracks, turn it off for 10 seconds and try again. [newbie] booting screen display to printer?
When one boots into Linux, the screen display tells you what is happening during the booting process. However it goes by so fast there is no way to read it intelligently. Is there a way to make those lines of text go either to the printer or to a file so that they can be read liesurely? It would help understand all that is happening as Linux boots up, and what is included and what is not. Thanks. -- Jeff Malka <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Registered Linux User 348854

Gavin the fact that you have an HCFMODEM listed indicates that this is a controllerless modem - a winmodem. I don't like your chances. Linux in general does not support this type of device which is designed for one software product. Leaving the controller hardware off the card probably reduces the manufactuerers costs by 50%! I would seriously suggest that you obtain an external modem from a reputable supplier of the same there are brand names such as 3Com, Dynalink and many others which will do the job much easier and the messing about you'll be landed with trying and even MAYBE succeeding with this one. > Calvin > [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of > John Rye > Sent: Saturday, October 07, 2000 4:50 AM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: Re: [newbie] Modem Blaster Config > > Calvin Milles wrote: > > > > I have a modem from Creative Labs "Modem Blaster" PCI , the exact model > is > > a > > "Creative Modem Blaster Flash56 PCI DI5630-4 any help configuring it > would > > be greatly appriceated. Re: [newbie] installing a "tar.gz" app?
If at all possible, get an RPM version. They're just plain easier to install and update. However it looks like for you a .tar.gz is your only option, so here's how you go about installing it: First untar it. "tar -xvzf the_program.tar.gz". Then cd to the new directory it creates, "cd the_program_directory" Then read the readme that it should come with "more README". It'll contain more detailed instructions on how to install. However 99% of the time, it'll say to do this: "./configure" then, "make" Then "su" to root and type "make install". And now it's installed and ready to use! You might get errors during the ./configure step. If this is the case, it's usually because you don't have the neccasary libraries installed. You can try to go to rpmfind.net and search for whatever file you're missing, and try installing that. Most of the time doing that will fix the problem. The easiest way to get around all that hassle is to go the developer route during the Mandrake Installation. So if you ever have to reinstall for whatever reason, choose the developer version next time. > I downloaded an app (solar system) in the form of .tar.gz > > What do I have to do to install such an app? Re: [newbie] internet with cable?
Dear Roman and All, Thank you for your advice. I just sent an email with an UPDATE. You may see it come up soon. I mentioned that I actually called my Cox-internet cable support and found someone who knows Linux. I did not actually get to talk to him but he told my helper that all I had to do to get on is set up in Linuxconf. He said to only enable DHCP and disable DNS. He said do not put any numbers down for anything else. No IP addresses needed or anything else. He said everything is automatically detected through the server as long as I just enable DHCP and disable DNS. Does that sound right? I will try it but does not my card have to be recognized and initialized first? I checked into sbin/isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf and this is what it says: Board 1 has Identity 3b 29 17 b7 6b 60 16 a3 4d: SMC1660 Serial No 689420139 [checksum 3b] Board 2 has Identity 35 ff ff ff ff 00 30 32 0d: CIR3000 Serial No -1 [checksum 35] Board 3 has Identity 27 ff ff ff ff 68 18 73 16: ESS 1868 Serial No -1 [checksum 27] /etc/isapnp.conf:46 --Fatal - IO range check attempted while device activated /etc/isapnp.conf:46 --Fatal - Error occurred executing request ' ' --- further action aborted Does this mean that my card is already recognized? It sounds like I just need to set up my card correctly. Yes, Roman, I will accept your offer for help about this . If my cable company does not need very much information from me then do I still have to do alot to get my card set up correctly? I will greatly appreciate your help. Thank you. It does. It gives a warning about 3.? haveing better support for video cards than 4.0 and asks if you want to use it. Truetype fonts shouldn't need 4.0. Re: [newbie] internet with cable?
Dear Eddie and All, Yes, I did checkout Harddrake early on before I did the 1000 steps to card setup :) and it did not detect my card. However when I went to /sbin/isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf I got this information: Board 1 has Identity 3b 29 17 b7 6b 60 16 a3 4d: SMC1660 Serial No 689420139 [checksum 3b] Board 2 has Identity 35 ff ff ff ff 00 30 32 0d: CIR3000 Serial No -1 [checksum 35] Board 3 has Identity 27 ff ff ff ff 68 18 73 16: ESS 1868 Serial No -1 [checksum 27] /etc/isapnp.conf:46 --Fatal - IO range check attempted while device activated /etc/isapnp.conf:46 --Fatal - Error occurred executing request ' ' --- further action aborted This seems to say that my ethernet card, dialup CirrusLogic Modem, and sound card are all recognized by Linux. The Board 1 identity is my SMC ethernet card. UPDATE: I actually did my next to last resort and called tech support for Cox internet. Of course he said they do not support Linux. I then asked if there was anyone there who knew how to connect with Linux anyway. There was. He said that all I have to do is go to Netcfg or Linuxconf and enable DHCP and make sure DNS is disabled. He said do not put anything else down. He said everything is detected automatically through their server. He said it is very simple. >From this information I assume as long as I have my card setup correctly and initialized first that if I follow his instructions afterwards I should be on. Well I probably have done alot of things I do not need to do. Please correct me here: I need to setup my card and choose the hopefully correct driver. What program is best to use, netcfg, Linuxconf, both, or manually some other way? Does the above information say that my card is already configured? I will be very grateful for anyone's help. Thank you. Marcia YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! That will unpack the file into a directory with the same name as the tar.gz. cd into that directory and find the README and INSTALL files and READ them!! The usual way to go is: su to root ./configure make make install That should do it. Good luck! Re: [newbie] installing a "tar.gz" app?
You have to uncompress the file - it will probably create a directory with the name of that app, i.e. /solar or something like that, with all its files underneath. Then you should follow the readme file to install. The command to use is: tar xvzf without the <> :-) philomena Jeff Malka wrote: > > I downloaded an app (solar system) in the form of .tar.gz > > What do I have to do to install such an app? Re: [newbie] How do I find which version of xfree86 do I have?
One way to find out - If you are running KDE, open the control center and click on information and then xserver - that should show you your version. philomena Paul wrote: > > It was Oct 7, 2000, 12:44, when Jeff Malka keyboarded: > > >I am running Mandrake 7.1 and would like to install something (True Type Font > >support) that requires "xfree86 4". [newbie] Maple Install
Hello all, I recently purchased Maple 6, which is compatible with both Windows and Linux (Unix). I was able to install in Windows fine, and obtained a liscense from them without a problem.. However Linux was a different story. I was able to install correct.y, and from what I can get from the manual I now need to input my netowork license..? Naturally I don't have this. I'm wondering if anyone else has installed this program and knows where I can get this networking license? I tried to register again and obtain a networking version of my liscense, but I was not able to register twice. I wrote the company, and I am hoping to hear from them... Just thought i'd check with all you folks too. Any thoughts/help is greatly appreciated! - Joe :)

RE: [newbie] Modem Blaster Config
The Modem documentation dose not say a winmodem, In the device manager for win98 their is a "HCFMODEM" listing, and in this listing their is "Creative PCI Modem Emulator" it uses IRQ 3, memory range E400-E400, and a I/O range 6300-6307. Under "Modem" in the device manager it is listed at "Com 2" and the I/O 02f8-02FF. It is not listed under ports in the device manager. If anyone has experience setting up this modem in linux mandrake I would greatly appriceate any advice. On balance, this gives the project the best science for the CPU cycles used. We trimmed processing where we could to lessen the impact on execution time. This of course affects the stats. It will take longer to add to your results received statistic. While it might be nice to somehow make version 3.0 workunits "worth more" stats wise, we have not added that complexity. There is also a great deal more variabilty in execution time with version 3.0. This is explained in the FAQ. Over time, each participant will get both "fast" workunits and "slow" workunits. Ths will average out and thus not have much of an effect on stats. Regards, Ozz.

The original setup that I was responsible for was as follows: 12 servers running NetWare 3.12 10 user on IBM PS/2-80 (386dx20) with 8Mb RAM 1 server running NetWare 3.12 50 user on IBM PS/2-77 (486dx33) with 16Mb RAM These were dotted around the UK up to 200 miles from Head Office. We then added TCP/IP to link them into a WAN via a SUN SPARC at Head Office. The NLM used for the TCP/IP stuff was Novix, which required doubling the RAM in all the servers as they acted as bridges to the IP network (the NetWare network was IPX/SPX). The servers were all running a fairly intensive Stock Control system (Locator), some sites had remote Radio Data Terminals (RDT) on the trucks. All sites also ran Sophos Anti-virus NLMs with real-time scanning, as well as NLMs for APC UPS (with full logging and auto-shutoff), FTP, RCONSOLE, remote printers (including JetDirect), Tobit FaxWare for faxing (send and receive) etc. In fact, the 50-user site was virtually paperless. Performance was not blistering, but was still surprisingly good. The company itself was a cold storage and transport outfit, and one of the largest in the UK. I have a screenshot of the Server monitor screen that I can send you if you want... Feel free to e-mail me if you want any more details... Regards, Ozz.

Without losing data, or having to > reinstall? Can I just swap entries in /etc/fstab? Only thing I know for sure is there's more to it than just changing fstab. When I was runnin 7.1 I swap'd master for slave on second ide (ie, no bootable drive was involved). I made the changes in fstab, before shutting down to make the hardware change. Bootup failed. I put my install CD in and chose upgrade, but didn't select any additional packages. A few minutes later I had a working system again :) So while the hardware change was successful, I really don't know all that was involved. Since you are swap'g the bootable drive around, you'll surely have to re-install lilo/grub. 'Course, an upgrade will take care of that too. I believe you'd be better off getting advice from someone who's actually swap'd boot drives tho. BTW, when you do swap, don't forget to change the drives' jumpers ;) -- Tom Brinkman[EMAIL PROTECTED] Galveston Bay

.asx rang a bell so I searched my Win2K machine and one popped up. When I double clicked it launched MultiMedia Player and played a song. So at least in Win2K it's a multimedia file of some sort. Mine was a song. On Linux .asx might have another meaning altogether. -rick -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Hellmut Sent: Saturday, October 07, 2000 4:20 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [newbie] asx? [newbie] Ethernet PC Card for portable PC
Hey folks. . . I 've just installed Mandrake 7.1 on my Portable PC Fujitsu/Siemens Lifebood E Series, and I've bought an Ethernet/fast ethernet D-Link PC Card DFE 650 Series. The problem is that my Mandrake doesn't recognize this Ethernet adapter ? How can I do to make it work ? ON the handbook, it is said "100Mbps Full Duplex and Linux Ready", but I doubt. Thank you in advance. Francois

Hi Erik, I have read that this happens when your computer has 48Meg of RAM or less. If this happens, just go for the single-cd install, and later on you can install other stuff that you like. Perhaps the difference is that my SCSI card is Adaptec 2940UW? The card recognises the scanner at boot, and SANE/xscanimage found the scanner the first time. [newbie] Linux on Compaq Prosignia P1?
Hi all, A friend of mine wants to install Linux but is having probs. As I have had no problems with installation I don't have a clue so maybe someone here can help. He is trying to load linux onto a Compaq Prosignia P1 with a SCSI CD-ROM with a smart array controller. He used the 4.60 smartstart CD's to erase the current setup and prepare his system for Linux for which Linux was a selectable option. However, whatever he does he cannot seem to boot off the bootable CD. He has tried Red Hat, SUSE and LM7.1 but they just leave him with a blinking cursor in the top left hand corner of the monitor and he is forced to reboot. With Mandrake he gets a little further with Tux being displayed and the options for auto or manual installation. Both start OK, decompressing the boot instructions but then a message appears saying: "Boot failed - Please change disks and start again." Thing is, as he got the distribution from a cover disk there isn't another to try. Has anyone had a similar problem? Thanks in advance Andrew
