[newbie-it] Problemi con Ati Rage fury

2001-11-03 Thread Alberto

Grazie in anticipo!
Alberto

 It did not bother me.
I have DSL so I downloaded the 8.1 ISOs as soon as they were posted to the
 mirrors.

But this is still poor business practice.

What of the person who was influenced to purchase the PowerPack because
they
were supposed to be immediatly sent copies of the dl edition.
To me the least that should be done is that the MandrakeStore should offer
to send these persons, without charge or other obligation, the dl edition
of 8.2 when it becomes final.

8.1 is the second version that has been avaiable for purchase from the
 MandrakeStore.
With neither version have they been able to deliver as promised.

I want Mandrake to make money, but they will end up losing direct sales to
other vendors unless they can get their act together.

You most likely don't have the c++ add-in for gcc and / or the standard c++
libraries installed.

You may want to verify that you have:

[mviron@wsdodev mviron]$ rpm -qa | grep c++
libstdc++2.10-devel-2.96-0.62mdk
libsigc++1.0-1.0.3-2mdk
libstdc++2.10-2.96-0.62mdk
gcc-c++-2.96-0.62mdk
[mviron@wsdodev mviron]$

the above packages installed. Of course, depending on what you are trying
to compile, you may need to install additional packages. The error will
then tell you what additional libraries and / or headers you'll require, do
a search on rpmfind.net on the name of the library or header, and it will
tell you which package you'll probably be able to find it in. Try to avoid
using non-Mandrake specific packages (the rpm names for mandrake packages
usually end in mdk.i586.rpm, as opposed to the other rpm-based distributions).

Re: [newbie] How do I sync my Visor - USB (was: Info on Syncing Visor (USB)}

2001-11-03 Thread shane

sorry, jpilot was a plug and play for me, left everything the way i found
it and hit the button when it said, all done. wait i take it back, i did
speed up the transfer rate, but the dev entry is blank for me, just works.

On Saturday 03 November 2001 19:46, you spoke unto me thusly:
I installed jpilot from the cd. It looks like it
requires some kind of /dev/... entry in the
preferences. So, I went looking for a ttyUSB... kind
of entry, but there are NONE in my /dev folder.

I did some research and found that 8.1 defaults to a
new devfs system that's is, as I understand it,
supposed to be more dynamic in that you don't get a
bzillion unused device files in /dev. BUT, my USB
Visor doesn't work, and I'm not sure how to get
Mandrake 8.1 to recognize it. I tried disabling the
devfs system per instructions from the MUO site, but
 still no good. Any ideas?

Sendmail automatically picks up on e-mails being sent to an account on your
machine (unless you have a dynamic IP, in which case things are handled a
little bit differently). All you have to do is make sure that sendmail is
running, by typing '/etc/rc.d/init.d/sendmail status' at the command line
as root. You do not use sendmail to check for new e-mail. It is used to
'transport' e-mail from one location (domain) to another (much as one uses
a car to get to and from work, but not to do work).

how will i
know if got mail and how will i read it.
Typically, when you login, it will tell you that you have new e-mail. The
other way of course, is to check it via an e-mail client (such as Eudora,
Outlook, pine, mutt, etc) depending on where you are checking it from.
You'll read it from directly within the e-mail client -- how depends on
which one you use.

and how will i know if it is PAP
or IMAP that i installed.

There is no server called PAP -- you have a choice of either POP or IMAP.
To check to see if it is installed, do an 'rpm -q imap' from the command
line. If it is, then pop3 and imap are available, although you may have to
enable them from within the services configuration menu.

Re: [newbie] Question about accessing windows mount

2001-11-03 Thread Michael D. Viron

I would guess that linux does not yet have support for whatever NTFS is
included with XP, since the last I heard, read / write support for NTFS 4
was still very experimental, and NTFS 5 support was virtually non-existant.
Since NTFS is a proprietary binary-only filesystem, linux does not support
it very well yet. Of course, with the DMCA, it is probably illegal to even
try to reverse engineer it.

You may want to see if he has the option of converting a small part of the
hard-drive to fat32, which linux has much better support for.

RE: [newbie] AOL newbie sendmail problem

2001-11-03 Thread Franki

I would have stuck with postfix if I were you, its much more secure then
sendmail, its faster, smaller and
easier as well.

if you start postfix or sendmail on boot (run: ntsysv from a prompt) and you
recieve mail,
it will go into the user account for whole the mail was addressed.

if postfix or sendmail is set to receive mail for mydomain.com
then mail for [EMAIL PROTECTED] will be delieverd to the local delivery
agent, (don't worry about that, postfix will take care of setting up local
delivery for you) and it will be delivered to the user1 on that system..

which pine or kmail or any others can collect for you via pop3 or imap..

if you have imap installed, then pop3 is also installed since they come in
the same package, it depends which one
you turn on.. (go into /etc/xinetd and look for the pop3 file, open it and
remove disable=yes then restart xinetd or your computer)

I suggest you start by going to linuxdoc.org and having a read of the mail
howtoo's just to give you a
better understanding of it all..

[newbie] Kernel panic

2001-11-03 Thread Warren Post

My newly installed LM8.0 now halts during bootup with the message
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:05. I must have done
something to cause this, but beats me what. Booting with the floppy
produces the same results.

Booting into Windows 95 (this is a dual boot machine) now shows about 2
seconds of garbage on the screen between the boot bitmap and the
appearance of the GUI -- not that this bothers me; I mention it as a
possible symptom.

What might this be? How do I fix it? How do I avoid screwing it up
again?

Thanks in advance,

Re: [newbie] Another Sound problem

2001-11-03 Thread Joseph Braddock

I had intermittent sound problems under KDE until I told it to use OSS
instead of ALSA. The easiest way to check/change is to go to the
Configuration menu, then KDE, then Sound and finally, Sound Server. On the
General tab, make sure the Start aRTS Soundserver on KDE startup is checked
(if it's not, that's probably your problem). On the Sound IO tab, change the
method to Open Sound System (mine was autodetect). When you hit reply, it
will warn you something about possibly locking up apps using sound. If you
have any apps open close them and then tell it to restart the sound server.
You can go back to the General tab and press the Test Sound button to see if
it made a difference.

Re: [newbie] Nvidia Nforce mainboards are here...

2001-11-03 Thread skinky

Frank, I think you're wise to hold off on this one for now as Derek and
yourself have said.

Look what happened with the KT133A... I rushed out and bought a Soltek
SL-75KAV with that chipset only to find that the VIA bug thing is a bit of
a pain and Mandrake had to provide a workaround in a big hurry. Because
of this in LM8.0 my hd ran much slower than it should have, others were
not able to burn CDs (I didn't have that prob) and I think there were a
few other problems. Although in LM8.1 my hd runs faster :-) I'm still a
bit p*ssed off that I was hasty in buying the latest and the greatest.
And I hate seeing the Applying (??) workaround message when booting.

I've learned my lesson so I'm going to wait a wee while to see if the
Nforce works with linux. Hope so.

| Your choice is ultimately your own, and I agree it is a hot looking

| Firstly the nForce is unique in that it has a single driver for the

[newbie] gdm broken in 8.1?

2001-11-03 Thread Dave Sherman

Hello everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem: I switched
from using kdm to gdm for my login manager, since I prefer the Gnome
desktop. However, gdm fails to remember my last session, and also resets
the default session to kde every time I reboot (it's a laptop, so I
reboot often). Needless to say, this gets a bit annoying, that I must
set it to use Gnome every time I login to the system.

When I was using Mandrake 7.2, both gdm and kdm worked fine. Kdm works
fine in 8.1, but gdm is definitely screwed up. I can see that there is a
file in my ~/.gnome/ directory (session or something like that) which
contains the last session I was in. However, gdm is apparently ignoring
this. And of course, if I set the default to Gnome, it resets when I
reboot the system.

Anyone else run into this? Is there a fix?

Dave
