[newbie-it] Materizzatore

[newbie] Segmentation+misc. install errors ?
Hi Folks, Well I'm back to my son's box still trying to get 8.1 installed. Here is the gist of the guts :-) It's an FIC motherboard (va-503+) w/192 mg. of ram. Now the memory consists of 2 sticks,1 is a 128 mg of crucial ram that is cl2. The other is a stick I bought from Tiger Direct. I've also got an ATI RAge 128 Pro (AGP card). In addition there is a Teac cdr along with another cdrom. The hd is a WD unit. Oh..and the bios is by award..version je-439 (if this helps). There is also a nic card that needs to go in,whch isn't in there at the moment. All of this is in an AT type case... The errors are seg faults..seems like memory is missing..lots of sig 11's,,hmm a few other wordings but it sounds like the themes are the same across all of them. I've tried a # of different settings..video shadowing off/on,turned the caches off/on,the pci burst settings and a variety of other things that don't seem to come to mind at the moment. Re-set the ram to cl3 ( took out what I percieved as the cheaper ram (the tiger) and used just the crucial)pnp off/on..irq manual/auto. Darn near all of 'em I think..lol. Bios defaults..set-up defaults...gee have I missed any..lol. I'm sure I have but you get the point :-) I even tried taking the drive to another box, loaded 8.1 (gaming edition) and put it back in the machine (it didn't like my trickery) to no avail. As I'm not sure which direction to go next I thought I'd post my problem here. The boy had 98se on there before and I REALLY REALLY don't wanna admit defeat and re-install that !! Win4Lin,sure..but straight 98..NO !! Now..I'm thinking maybe pull out the cdr (set as sec. master and where I'm installing from) and try again ? I have a PCI video card I can try ? Anyway..if anyone has managed to get past issues such as this I'd really love to know how it was done,or be pointed to the correct docs to work it out on my own. I spent 12+ hours trying to deal w/this the day before y'day before I come crying to the list..lol. On Fri, 28 Dec 2001 01:28:01 -0500 Maureen L. Thomas [EMAIL PROTECTED] scribbled gleefully: I upgraded to KDE 2.2 and am using K-Office. So far it hasn't crashed or froze on me and I have imported all the documents I was using from Lotus SmartSuite and it hasn't lost a thing. I am very pleased with it. Some small improvements in K-Spread are needed, like multi copy, but otherwise it works just fine. KWord does everything that I need for home and for a couple of non profit orgs I help out. All in all it all works fairly decently. Interesting, Maureen, but how about the export filters? Will K-Office successfully export to M$Office or Lotus SmartSuite. Can a document be saved in .doc or .xlm or whatever. When I tried to import a form (lots of tables) from a Word file that that StarOffice handled flawlessly, there were too many errors in the K-Word version to make the form usable. Ordinary Word docs (mere text) seem to work OK. Thanks for the review, Mike -- Alcohol is the anesthesia by which we endure the operation of life. -- George Bernard Shaw _ Do You Yahoo!? On Thursday 27 December 2001 05:59 pm, you wrote: I agree. I have an Athlon 1GHz and I've given up trying to use nvidia's drivers. I too have noticed that there seem to be a lot of problems with AMD cpus and nvidia drivers. Because I have 1152MB RAM I use Mandrake's enterprise kernels. The 1541 nvidia drivers for 2.4.8-26mdkenterprise (from muo a couple of months back) work fine with that kernel, however supermount is not supported. Thus I also have 2.4.16.3mdk-1-1mdkenterprise installed (supermount works) but have been unsuccessful with any of the nvidia drivers so I'm using XFree86-3.3.6-23 without 3D accel for this kernel. I have read several references that stated we need to only use a (BEEFY) AMD-approved power supply. Especially with the faster/newer AMDs and video cards as they draw lots of wattage. Also with more ram, bigger/faster spinning drives, extra pci cards. I don't _seem_ to have any ps-related problems, but I only have a cheap 16meg TNT agp card and one pci card (cheap sound) and one isa card (my usr sportster 33.6 voice modem since my 56k pci modem uses Conexant's HCF drivers. They say on their website they will have Linux drivers for it by the end of the year but looks at calendar and shakes head...). I assume you've been through the nVidia drivers with a fine-toothed card. I also assume if it is an Abit mobo you have tried turning off AGP to see if that takes care of it. Read a reference that some of their older mobos wouldn't work properly with AGP - that they discovered this while developing their own nVidia-based video cards. Apparently it has something to do with power, as they say there are a handful of power supplies that overcome this problem (somehow). I've tried 1541, 2313 and 2314 with rpms, source rpms and compiling from the tarballs to no avail. I also compiled 7 different kernels myself and tried each driver with each kernel before I realised I was wasting my time. Ouch! The strange thing is that with most nvidia driver installs it all worked just fine and dandy (gears, tuxracer, tuxkart, etc) until I restarted X or rebooted then I started getting segmentation faults all over the place. Hey. I think I read something about this situation on (possibly) nVidia's linux forum. Could have been Mandrake User forum. It might have something to do with that depmod a command, but I don't think so (my memory is faultier than my computer's). To make matters worse, it appears that my monitor - Philips 107S - causes problems so I'm using a generic multisync monitor driver. The Philips drivers that come with LM work but there are errors/problems. I bought my monitor in 1994 - all I can use are the generic drivers. Which brings to mind something I've been wondering about since my first install at the first of the month: Does anyone know the difference between Generic SVGA and Generic Extended SVGA or whatever it is in the Generic Monitor section? So until I find a kernel that supports supermount and the nvidia drivers work with it, I'll have to boot between these two kernels. Not that I'm complaining... ; ) I hope you get it all worked out before you get tired of trying. Another question: My box (Mandrake Linux 8.1 Powerpack) says I have kernels 2.4.8 and 2.2.19. But when I installed (over and over) I never saw a place for choosing kernels. It seems I have 2.4.8.26 installed automatically? skinky I'll just have to take your word on that one! 8-P Later, Wes Gregg [EMAIL PROTECTED] Registered Linux User # 252649 Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: Open Source (was Re: [newbie] Recommended office suites? Now OT)
If software were free how could the employees of the software company be paid to begin with? Lots (most?) non-profit organizations' employees draw salaries. Someone mentioned internet development as an example of free software helping us all. I saw the guy that wrote the mailer program that the majority of isps use on TechTV a couple of months back. He didn't seem to mind that his free software was being used by millions. Although if he had charged $5-$10 for each copy in existance he would surely be a millionaire. Of course there are probbably other programs that do the same thing for hundreds of dollars. I for one am glad that they aren't the only option, as I live in a small town with dialup only and I can see how we could have been severly restricted in internet isps if everything that was available for free... ...Wasn't Red Hat has posted small (and growing) profits over the past few quarters. MandrakeSoft is apparently on target to post a profit next year or in 2003. Considering that the current economic climate is not conducive to profit making, these are not trivial feats. I think the key staff know what the GNU/Linux distribution market is like, and they won't be expecting too much from their share prices. MandrakeSoft is listed on the Marche Libre exchange, which was chosen (AFAICT) for its stability and lack of over-speculation, which is the main problem with the NYSE and OTC (AKA Nasdaq). Investors here generally tend to be more forgiving and don't expect quick, unsustainable profits. How can one (in the United States) purchase a token amount of Mandrake shares (just a couple I am afraid) without going to a stock broker? But, as you have said, the verdict is still out on that. :) It seems that a lot of the big (for profit) software companies (I'm thinking along the lines of Microsoft and Apple here) are like chiropractors. Their entire existance is based on taking people's money to just get them by until the next visit (verion). If they got it right the first time they would all go out of business. Someone said to me, You don't buy a new car and expect to get a free upgrade when the next version comes out, do you? But if I bought a new car and it stalled at least once a day and I had to restart, well, sure I would expect a free upgrade - to a properly working version which is what I would have paid for in the first place. I mean c'mon, why pay a hundred dollars (or more) just to be what amounts to a beta (gamma?) tester?!? Linux, on the other hand, IS free. If I do find a bug, it probbably wouldn't anger me that much to download a newer version. And since the minute you do there are probbably three newer versions out there, it isn't like there is a long wait for bugfixes/upgrades. Microsoft, I hate your OS's (well, I actually LIKED Windows 3.11, and its File Manager (don't like to see my files as icons, y'see) - but I really like your hardware (mice/keyboards are outstanding and cheap if you don't need the absolute newest versions) and games (Flight Simulator, I think I have one of the original DOS versions). It's a shame buying one of their products doesn't give you a voice in the direction of development of their company. Or maybe its just a shame their stockholders (Hmm, Bill?) don't have to use their OS (exclusively). And BTW, WTF is Windows ME for, anyway? I don't have a job in the tech industry. Maybe that would change my perspective. I never got to try OS/2 but I heard that it was well-liked by its users. MacOS only runs on Macs (AFAICT) so that isn't something to help me either (mainly because the macs are WAY out of my price range, maybe if I could just write a check for a new G4 my perspective would change. Mac users sure seem to like being Mac users). Not only that, but processor development would have been slower. We would all be using 486/Pentium processors right now. There would be no such thing as desktop 3D-acceleration. SGI and Sun would still be major forces in the computer industry. The Internet boom would never have happened. Linux would never have been developed. At least, not to the point it is now. It would have simply been considered a Unix variant (at best) or an entertaining graduate school project (at worst). I was a fan of MS-DOS. Even (more or less) liked Win 3.11. I like a GUI desktop, I just don't like icons only. I guess I like to pretend I know what is going on. We owe Bill a great deal. Does that mean I like the way his company does business? No. But I still respect him for doing something that most of us are very jealous at (whether we admit it or not), and that's becoming the richest man alive by creating demand for something that the rest of us decided we couldn't live without: computers. How many of you actually remember the pre-MS computer days? And not just Windows; pre-MS-DOS, too. Years ago my friend had an account at our local college on their Vax/VMS(?) computer and I learned a little about email/gopher, etc. How many people know gopher as anything but the little rodent today? And all the busy signals I get and slowdowns? If half of the internet users really ARE just downloading porn and such - that wasn't a problem at 320*200*16 colors. And I can't really see the me-too! AOL users rushing to sign up for such a service on a unix-based system. (Note: There are lots (_maybe_ even the majority) of useful human beings that use aol. But) And I wouldn't have to throw away approx. 3 AOL cd's a week. At least when they sent the floppies you could tape over the write-protect hole and reformat it. I wish they would send their crap on cd-rw's - but I ramble. Personally, If I ever met Mr. Gates (or Ballmer or anyone else high-up at Microsoft) I would smile, shake hands, and thank them for what they've done for the world of computers. I don't expect to delete my Win98SE partition anytime soon. I just don't see any reason to go any farther than that. I saw a show on WinXP talking about all the problems (from Win98) that had been fixed, they ought to give it away as a bugfix. But this is a Linux forum! [newbie] Is This (browser type/function) Available in Linux?
Hi, I just remembered that I saw a program once that allowed you to type a website address (ie, http://gnttype.org for instance) and tell it how many levels deep you wanted it to go and it would start downloading complete pages to your hard drive for offline browsing. It would allow the option of specifing what type of files to get (html, graphics sound, etc.) or not as the case would be and if you wanted links followed how deep to go in them as well. Since I'm stuck with my 33.6 right now I can usually keep up browsing, but I've just discovered that with the multiple desktop option I can have a web browser on one, a set of audio apps in another, my email in a third, a card game in #4, etc. And I thought that would be a good program to take advantage of this feature. Plus (since I have a slow [I know, it's all realitive - we were so amazed when we figured out how to overdrive our 300 bps/baud modems to 450!] connection) it would be great to pick a site to download while I'm sleeping/away from home. [newbie] Which Kernel?
Someone writes in another subject's post... I hope you get it all worked out before you get tired of trying. Another question: My box (Mandrake Linux 8.1 Powerpack) says I have kernels 2.4.8 and 2.2.19. But when I installed (over and over) I never saw a place for choosing kernels. It seems I have 2.4.8.26 installed automatically? Well, you use expert mode and individual package selection and find trhe little symbol at the bottom of the screen that looks like recycling but with two blue arrows to toggle from the mostly useless tree view to the flat view and then scroll down to the k's and pick kernel22 to be installed. Then when bootloader time rolls around, you can make the kernel22 boot the default or even delete the kernel 2.4 boots if you like. If you have a box that just doesn't like kernel 2.4 to begin with boot from the _second_ CD and you can use kernel22 as your install kernel as well. AOL Systems wrote: How to mount and unmount second hardisk on my linux box Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? You do need to create the directory before using it as a mount point with mkdir /mnt/2nddisk Of course you can do this automagically with diskdrake--yes the very same tool as is used in installing. just open Mandrake Control Center, then Hardware then MountPoints, and you will be there with diskdrake. assign mount points to the second drive partitions as you choose, then mount them, and answer yes to updating /etc/fstab with changes as you leave diskdrake. Now you can mount and unmount with mount /mountpointname umount /mountpointname in a terminal as root at any time no programs are using the 2nd disk (yeh, if it is open in a file manager, it won't unmount). Hi Doug, Don't know much about Linux, as I just installed ML8.1 myself one week ago. Trying to find help on driver install in this corner. With my system all install went well. You might look in your windows 2000 partition for the file BOOT.INI. This should be something like: [boot loader] timeout=0 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINNT [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINNT=Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional /fastdetect The last number (3) is the bootpartition number for w2000. Try any number between 0 and the maximum partitions on your drive. The file is attributes h,s,r so under dos first revert those attribs to be able to see the file. (attrib -s -r -h and after edit attrib +h +r +s). Maybe linux has made your first partition a other number. So W2000 sees its partition on an other number also. Maybe this will help you a bit further. Jan van Maasdam. Doug Lerner schreef: Hi, No - I didn't do anything special. I started out with two partitions on my hard drive. The first one contained Windows 98 and the second contained Windows 2000. I decided to keep the Win 2000 partition so I clicked on the first partition, deleted it and then pressed auto- allocate. [newbie] Unable to read partition table
Thanks to all of you that answered my previous e-mail. But really the question was not correctly formulated by me, so the answers are not what i expected. My fault. Try to explain better. First let me tell you about my machine: I have two hard disks hda , hdb and the first has three partitions: hda1 (Windows XP OS initializing files) hda5(Linux native) and hda6(swap). The hdb disk has the Windows XP system and is used as a store disk. There's also a CDRW hdc and a magneto-optical drive attached toa SCSI adapter that is sda. All this is correctly mounted in /etc/fstab and my /etc/lilo.conf has the append line to emulate the ATAPI CDRW as a SCSI one. Now what happens. When i switch the machine cames the LiLO screen. I choose to boot Linux. Thenext screen is the Aurora Welcome screen with the kernel version (Mandrake 8.1) in the upper left corner of the monitor. If everything goes right next we have a lot of messages scrolling the monitor showing the hard drives, the CDRW and the Optical drive. Then Aurora goes to the graphical display and the system boots to his end, and that's all. Now what happens to me? When i reachthe welcome screen the system stops a little and instead of displaying the information about the drives it sends a message: LDP: Unable to read partition table. Then the booting goes on apparently without problems. Butwhen i am in the OS if i try (as root) to type the command "cdrecord -scanbus", instead of displayng the CDRW and the Optical drive it says: cdrecord file or directory not found; cannot open scsi driver. And that's the problem. Question? Whyit can't read the partition table?that´s the true problem; the other is a consequence of this error. I use Mandrake since version 6.0 and i never had such a problem. I think i have been a little more clear now. Can anyone help me? Thanks Antonio.
[newbie] Some MDK 8.1 Problems
Hello all, I have been running Mandrake Linux since it's 7.2 release. I never had problems untill I upgraded to v8.1. I am running the following: An MSI 6163 Lite (VIA Chipset) M/B (with a Creative CT5880 Sound Card onboard) 533 MHz Intel Celleron CPU 128 MB RAM 1 15 GB Quantum HD, 1 20 GB Quantum HD Creative Sound Blaster 128 PCI A CTX PR705F Monitor. Win98SE and, of course, MDK 8.1. I have migrated from M$ 6 months ago and was very happy with the move. My problems with 8.1 are as follow: Some times the whole desktop (KDE) freezes, nothing helps but the reset bottun. Afer every boot, I have to run sndconfig and restart the sound service for the KMix app to work under X. I have the Onboard CT5880 disabled. I can hear the MPEG movies I play with plaympeg, but not see them... The Konqueror Browser (both the KFM and the WEB parts) stop working after a few times of use, I have to exit X, su and delete DCOP random seeds and user files under /tmp. All of these are really annoying. I am wondering, should I go back to v8.0 ? Thanks, Amichai. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

OK Does hotmail really support pop3 ? Accessible tru kmail etc If OK so what is the POP3 adress ? ... OK JH Sure does. I forget what the POP3 is, but is on the site. Nothing about it on neither the help section or settings. There is one, that makes hotmail check other pop sites like your isp's pop account and adds to the hotmail one. If I missed it, please show me. JH I have never really tried it in Kmail. So i will not make any promises. I had given kmail just as an example of non ms related mail clients because I am looking for a normal/real pop server. JH But I do know I have alot of users on my network that do it through Outlook. That does not mean hotmail has a pop server. It is, I believe, nothing more than another MS' style ignore all the other, and do our stuff secretly, so no one can know what we do, or no one else can use it. I tried on some guess for a pop server in the name, and found only pop.hotmail.com to be existent. It used to be a normal pop server actually, back in the old days, 3-4 years ago, when hotmail was running non MS os. The machine, though, seems to be ignoring everything. telnet to port 110 gave me nothing, also the nmap. Up to here, nothing proves me hotmail has a pop server. Any other ideas are welcome. On Fri, 28 Dec 2001 17:29:02 +0900, Doug Lerner [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I wasn't even going to respond to the hypothetical about the avaracious drug company withholding medication from poor people, but the logic of the answer bothered me so much I decided to. Even though my question was never answered by anybody (do the investors of time and money in drug research deserve to make a profit for their efforts?) I will answer yours. Your example seems to imply that anybody who puts forth effort and creates something that society finds useful and important then personally becomes liable financially to make sure that everybody who needs it gets it. I say to that - WHAT?! The answer to the problem of poor people not getting drugs from a drug company is not to steal the patent. It is for government and charities and properly run health care systems to acquire the medication and distribute it as needed. As I mentioned earlier, the Brazilian Government made their decision only after all other avenues had been explored. The health system of Brazil (or even for the US for that matter) does not have enough funds to help everyone in the best way possible. Negotiations were made with Roche in an effort to lower the exhorbitant price of nelfinavir. These failed, leaving the government with little alternative. The UN has praised the move, and the USA has withdrawn the official objection they had lodged through the WTO. Other AIDS-striken nations, like South Africa, are investigating similar methods. Again, that it what government, taxes and charities are FOR. Capitalism and social welfare often don't work well together. Generally, here is little or no profit for private corporations in social welfare, and governments are reluctant to put more funds into this vital sphere for fear of alienating the business comunity, who increasingly have the power to divert their investment to other countries at the wink of an eye. Governments, particularly those of lesser developed countries (LDCs) have limited funds. LDCS often have huge debts to pay as well. They don't need the added burden of paying double the real cost of some drug. They _could_ probably get the money, but that would divert funds from other pressing tasks, and would hamper the economy (which would make things even worse in the long run). Yes, you can hypothecate about some drug company blackmailing society over some needed drug. And, in fact, there are already laws allowing the government to license the patent to competing firms in that case. That almost happened in Canada recently over Cipro, but it turned out not to be necessary. But you are talking about the exception, not the rule. I never said it was the rule. However, the few exceptions that _do_ exist warrant some consideration due to their massive impacts. Would you rather that people die? The Canadian example you offer is interesting. There really isn't much difference between this and what is happening in Brazil. I know little about Cipro, but the difference here seems to be that nelfinavir is made and owned by a completely foreign manufacturer. In that case, how can it be licensed to competing firms? Extending the argument that it is somehow the responsibility of the dryg company to also supply it to everybody in need, regardless of financial impact, you could also say that anybody who produces anything that anybody needs somehow assumes an ethical responsibility to make sure they get it. But there is a different between the producing side and the consuming side. Just because a person wants to be creative and inventive shouldn't put the person at financial risk by society. I should first say that I am not arguing that you are wrong. The difference here is simply that we are taking different approaches to the topic. I believe that for a democracy to properly function, everyone and everything in it (including corporations) should hold some responsibility for its functioning. Otherwise, we see what is happening in nations like the USA or Australia (my country): rising social inequality. In the long run, this can only be bad for a society. My view is more like that espoused in Europe and Asia. Take Japan, for example. To the Japanese, your views would be totally alien. In the past fifty years, they have undergone more rapid economic transformation than any other nation, while _maintaining_ social equality. They have done this by making everyone and everything accountable for the welfare of the nation. In the same period, social equality has markedly fallen in Anglo-American capitalist states. No nation has ever moved from an 'underdeveloped' to a 'developed' state by using Anglo-American economic principles (which you seem to embrace). Indeed, most nations that have adopted such methods have gone backward. While your views may be 'alien' to the Japanese (or to many other peoples), it doesn't necessarily mean they are 'wrong', just 'different'. doug

Re: [newbie] Recommended office suites?
Well, I've been living here in Japan for the past 18 years now and I find companies here more capitalistic and less regulated then in the U.S. Everything you buy here is strictly let the buyer beware. There is no such thing at all like money back guarantee like in stores in the U.S. And things are pretty unregulated as far as business goes. I remember some years ago I wanted to import modems into Japan so I contacted JETRO, the Japan External Trade Organization, asking how do I arrange for an import license. They said there was no such thing. If I wanted to import, go ahead. In the U.S. you have to have business licenses to open up a small store or business. No such thing here. I ran an Internet cafe here in Tokyo for three years with no regulation hassles at all. As far as maintaining social equality goes, tell that to women who have traditionally been more discriminated against here. When I worked at Fujitsu, women - even the programmers - were expected to come in 15 minutes before the men to tidy things up and start the coffee and tea going. (Fujitsu, by the way, is a great company and one of the more progressive in Japan, with a high percentage of female managers these days.) While the salary discrepencies that exist in the U.S. are not as severe in Japan (and maybe that is what you meant by maintaining social equality), unemployment is at a high right now and the lifetime employment system is falling by the wayside. In addition, the population is aging quickly and the health insurance system is about bankrupt. Lots of problems facing Japan right now. Hi All, I have been having a long wait to do anything in Mandrake 8.0 w/KDE on 32m RAM. A few hours ago I put in *128M* and it only reads 65m or so, it is much faster. Maybe it would be faster still if *128m* was reading? How do I use the GUI to set the ram? If no GUI, can I get to lilo while the server is running, or do I need to shut it down and restart? Question two... I am running rpminst after selecting update to most of the packages on the update list. It has been going for hours maybe the progress bar is moving, maybe not. I am reluctant to shutdown. I have an almost fast, cable connection that is working ok for web pages on another machine at the same time. How long should I wait and/or how do I tell/determine if rpminst is stalled and unrecoverable.
