[newbie] CD Playing with home brewed SMP kernel
Hi, Just tried to play an audio CD and I get the following messages in my syslog and dialogue box on screen. Using Konq Services Audio CD Browser - The file or directory / does not exist, and the following message in syslog: Jul 24 23:47:30 faust modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-21 last message displayed N number of times With XMMS the play button opens up a dialouge box for file location etc, I enter /mnt/cdrom but no files or anything are displayed. Does anyone have any idea what may be wrong, CD's play fine under Win2K on the same machine. Oh yes I did rebuild my Kernel for SMP and did do some pruning in the config of the kernel, hope I did not remove something vital ;-) The CD is on the onboard IDE channel2, primary, HD is on Promise Ultra66 card. Thanks for any tips. Richard. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

[newbie] Sudden Logouts
hi, I haven't fixed my KDE 3.0.2 Sudden Logouts that is why Im switching temporarily to GNOME, the problem is, I find KDE more user friendly than GNOME for example in creating shorcuts to applications, I cant seem to figure out yet how to make one in GNOME without "dragging from Nautilus", unlike in KDE where i just have to right click and voila, a create link to application menu. Switching between desktops sucks, just when i get used to KDE, that darn sudden logouts occur. is that a known bug? or am just one of the few lucky user to experience that? what's the latest stable version of GNOME? I read GNOME 2 is just on a beta version. HYH -- g2 "Intelligence, acquired; Wisdom, inherent." RLU # 278414 Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

That is is you are looking for a match in the file name. Now if you are looking for a match in the file contents, it is a little trickier,,, grep -i -l --exclude 'mnt|proc' -e (yourpatternwithoutquotes) / The -i is for ignore case and the -l lists only the file, not the matching lines within it. OTOH if it's a multisession CD or if the > disk session was not fixated after the writing, a swift read of > man cdrecord > will tell you the specifics on adding data to the CD. I use eroaster (gui) which is VERY easy to configure - its mostly done for you. I may be mistaken but IIRC, if you don't fixate the cd then you can't read the data until it has been fixated. After I click "Burn CD" I just select "CD-R", "fixate CD when done" and "multisession CD". Then I can read the data immediately and then add more data to the same cd. (Also if IIRC) the only thing to watch is that this method uses something like 30 MB (not sure if this figure is correct) in between burn sessions to record each session but I don't mind that. I've never had a coaster (yet) and I burn cdrw @ 4x, cdr @ 8x - except music cds @ 4x on a 10x HP 9310i burner Please correct me If this info is wrong. If you cannot understand the contents, copy the file into your Windows partition and then either post it in a mail, or send it as an attachment direct to me if it is too large for a mail. If you send your XF86Config-4 file as well I could check if it looks OK. It is also worth posting on that mandrakeuser.org board as well. You will get your problem in front of more people. The safe way is to refer to the monitors manual. It is possible to write custom settings in XF86Config-4 to suit any monitor. But it really is quite complicated and the documentation is quite arcane (http://www.xfree.org/4.2.0/XF86Config.5.html#sect8) This is probably more work than you feel comfortable doing, so the easy solution is to just use XFdrake to pick a monitor similar to your own, and compare the specs by looking them up on the web. derek Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] CUPS driver for Star Gemini-10X
I am trying to get my venerable Star Gemini-10X working under LM 8.1 and CUPS but cannot find an appropriate driver. The Gemini-10X is a 9 pin dot matrix printer, so I've tried the dot matrix drivers that are available for Star under CUPS. What I get when I try to print a test page is a single horizontal line followed by line feeds forever. Ditto when I try the Epson dot matrix driver. What else should I be trying? I've already looked at linuxprinting.org and posted this question on linuxprinting.star.general with no luck. TIA, Warren Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Formerly it looked like this: __ ./configure make After that we need to edit the Makefile that we just made. Do vi Makefile __ Now it looks like: ./configure --prefix=/usr --mandir=/usr/share/man --libdir=/usr/lib \ --sysconfdir=/etc make make install With no editing of the Makefile, and everything else remains the same. Much better approach; thanks Tom Lyons! However, as dfox pointed out, sox likes to put uncompressed man page files out there, so after Tom Lyon's ./configure addition above we still need to do the following: cd /usr/share/man/man1 (deleting the old originals) rm -f sox.1.bz2 rm -f play.1.bz2 rm -f soxexam.1.bz2 (compressing the newer and more up to date manpages) bzip2 sox.1 bzip2 play.1 bzip2 soxexam.1 There are symlinks in the man1 directory that point to the compressed man page filenames; we need not destroy or recreate those because they will become valid as we replace their targets with the proper files. (after the bzip2 process.) Now we will put Sox to work as we get Realplayer installed and functional. The Sox recompile has been and is the most complicated part of this (unless you are hunting Windows Media streams, but that's another time), so don't run yet. The rest is pretty straightforward stuff. Realplayer can be a little tricky to get ahold of if you haven't done it before. There are two ways I can think of for everyone here and neither one of them involve going to the Realplayer site for a download. I've heard fuzziness about the binaries on the Realplayer site, and haven't experienced them myself, but have listened intently to others. The number one way to get Realplayer is to be a member of the Mandrake Club. Like me, for instance. ;D In that case you can get it from the following link: http://www.mandrakeclub.com/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=search&query=realplayer This gets you RealPlayer-8.0-3mdk.i586.rpm; which is a newer and slicker rpm. Works better too, IMO. If you are NOT a Mandrake Club member, you can get the rpm from this link: ftp://speakeasy.rpmfind.net/linux/freshrpms/misc/RealPlayer-8.0-1.i386.rpm After you download the rpm from one of these, you go to the directory you put it in ( ~/tmp, perhaps) and issue the following: rpm -ivh RealPlayer-8.0-blah.rpm You also need to review at this point that your soundcard is fully functional, and also that you have Kmix installed. Kmix is a graphical util that controls all available aspects of your soundcard as it sees them; and usually it sees the most. If you don't have it pull up rpmdrake and do a search on your installation cd's for it. Now pull up Kmix from your menu or from an Eterm or terminal prompt. You will notice a bunch of sliders and alot of green lights, with one red light lit up across the bottom. The greens represent all sources that are sending to or have access to /dev/dsp. Turn them ALL OFF except for anything labeled with a RED right triangle across the top, and the master volume and PCM sliders. Of the Red right triangles, there are only two that seem to affect recording on my system: Ogain and Recmon. These need to have green lights. If you have these two sliders, leave them green and turn the other red triangles off. This is important. The controls vary from soundcard to soundcard, depending on it's features. You may need to experiment; but this section gives you the basic blueprint. Your soundcard may be different in the next step too, so again you may have to experiment. Notice that the Master and PCM sliders are almost to the top; they work just fine right there. Move your Gain sliders almost to the bottom; the same degree that the Master/PCM sliders are from the top. Know what I mean here? This is the proper degree of adjustment for my system; I assume here that it will work for you as well. Now let's deal with the red lights across the bottom. This represents your recording source; and There Will Only Be One. Yep, just like Highlander. Your One needs to be Master, so make sure that one is lit up under the Master slider, and all the other ones are dark. What am I doing and why, you ask? Well, noise is a real problem. By carefully targeting what channels are active and deactivating the majority of them, you are assured ( or given a higher probability of getting) a noise free recording. If a channel is not on

A lot of your problem might be less than best quality cd-r's, but also too many extras on the CL, particularly '-data'. What does happen? Do you get a buffer underrun? Go to the directory where the iso is placed and try: cdrecord -v -eject -dummy speed=16 dev=0,0,0 ./filename.iso cdrecord -v -eject -dummy speed=8 dev=0,0,0 ./filename.iso cdrecord -v -eject -dummy speed=4 dev=0,0,0 ./filename.iso cdrecord -v -eject -dummy speed=2 dev=0,0,0 ./filename.iso cdrecord -v -eject -dummy speed=1 dev=0,0,0 ./filename.iso and see which one works for you. The -dummy switch makes sure no data is actually burnt to the disc. -- Good luck Roman Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

[newbie] Pauses with FTP and POP services
I have a new Mdk 8.2 server that is handling FTP and POP 3 services, the initial connect takes a very long time, up to a minute. Once the connection is made it is super fast, but it is the connection that is taking forever. Has anyone else experienced this and is there a way to tweak it? However a look at /etc/XF86Config-4 shows the screens section contains this in my config Section "Screen" Identifier "screen1" Device "NVIDIA GeForce 256 (generic)" Monitor "Nokia 446Xpro" DefaultColorDepth 16 Subsection "Display" Depth 8 Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x400" ViewPort0 0 EndSubsection Subsection "Display" Depth 16 Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" ViewPort0 0 EndSubsection Subsection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" ViewPort0 0 EndSubsection Subsection "Display" Depth 32 Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" ViewPort0 0 EndSubsection EndSection Notice the colourdepth 24 section has 1024x768 as its max resolution. Try setting the DefaultColorDepth parameter to 16 or 32 by editing the file and see if that improves things. (Just restart X. No need to reboot. This isn't Windows :-) I believe you can add extra resolutions simply by adding them to the Modes list, but I have never tried it, and if you were to add a resolution which causes the scan rate of the monitor to be too high you could fry your monitor. derek Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] XDisplay Screen Settings
I have nvidia geforce3 graphics card. My windblows screen resolutions are always better, and this is because I can set a far higher screen resolution which windblows adopts and holds. Mandrake can test a better screen resolution , but something always resets the screen resolution backwards to the lower values, I do not know what. Mandrake Control Centre - Hardware - X Display , comes up, 1024x768 16million colours (24bits) now I can reset here to either, 1024x768 4billion colours (32bits) or better still, 1280x1024 4billion colours (32bits), both test OK, and it is mandatory before exiting the Xdisplay programme to reboot, which duely happens, But always something has reset Xdisplay back to, 1024x768 16million colours (24bits) So no matter how often you attempy a reset you end up back where you came in. Is there any way to prevent to get the better resolution adopted. John -- John Richard Smith [EMAIL PROTECTED] Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
[Fwd: [newbie] Recording Net-Radio Broadcasts (Chpt 1)]
I'd saved these intending to investigate further at some point. It can't hurt to repost them for those who are interested. Original Message Subject: [newbie] Recording Net-Radio Broadcasts (Chpt 1) Date: 24 Jun 2002 21:51:42 -0400 From: Lyvim Xaphir <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: NewbieMandrake-List <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I promised this a while back and got sidetracked by RL. ;) So here it is. This is what it takes to record broadcasts off the net in ogg format. Using Sox (which is the best sound util ever made) you can also record just about anything that your soundcard puts out; VERBATIM. Sox is a deceptively innocuous utility that endows the user with a huge amount of power and flexibility with sound streams that are routed thru the soundcard. By trade and public presentation, Sox was originally touted as a file format conversion utility. However Sox's real power comes in it's ability to snatch an audio stream from /dev/dsp and convert it into the file format of your choice. In this case, our choice will be Ogg Vorbis. There are fully 24 file formats listed in the Sox man page. You can encode to or convert between all of them. Oddly enough, Ogg Vorbis is not amongst them; at least in the LM82 version of the Sox man pages. The first wrinkle that we encounter is the fact that Sox as installed from the Mandrake LM81/82 CD's does NOT encode Ogg capability. Ogg Vorbis encoding/conversion is indeed supported under Sox, however you need to read the source documentation to catch this clue. To his credit, the current maintainer of Sox Chris Bagwell does give Ogg an honorable mention on his website. Which is: http://home.sprynet.com/~cbagwell/sox.html In order to get Ogg capability we must compile it in. Unfortunately, running rpm --rebuild on sox-12.17.1-3mdk.src.rpm will not do this; it will not detect installed oggvorbis libraries, and you will be forced to do two things. One is to recompile the source code. The other is that you must have the ogg vorbis libraries installed. The next time somebody redoes the sox source rpm it would be nice if their configure routine checks for Ogg Vorbis libs.(HINT HINT nudge nudge) The devels may not be needed, I haven't checked. But this is what I have installed according to Rpmdrake: libogg0 libogg0-devel libvorbis0 libvorbis0-devel If you don't have those, do a search for them using rpmdrake and get them installed off of your installation cd's. Next, make sure that you have the rpm version of Sox installed. Yes I know I just said that the rpm binary version of Sox does not support Ogg; however we need to maintain some semblance of order with regard to the RPM database and in order to do that we are going to cheat a little, since we must deal with a direct source to binary install. Make sure you have the Sox rpm installed. Now we go to CVS and download the latest Sox code. That's right, if we've got to go pure source we might as well go to thewell, the source. Hehe. Go to your home or main /tmp directory and enter the following as a non-root user in a terminal command line: cvs -d :pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/sox login (when prompted for a password here hit enter) cvs -z3 -d :pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/sox co sox And after the last line you should see a "sox" directory created and the CVS download will commence. After you have the entire CVS tree, su to root. Make sure you su to root. Descend into the "sox" directory and enter the following two commands: ./configure make After that we need to edit the Makefile that we just made. Do vi Makefile If you are not a member of the one true vi faith, you may be able to scrape by with another of the lesser heretic faiths. I personally don't recommend it, however. In any case, at the beginning of the Makefile you will see the following: __ # Makefile.in # # Processed by configure into a Makefile. We assume the environment in # which we are running is a POSIX'y environment. Thus, all of the standard # POSIX tools are available. # # Paths srcdir = . prefix = /usr/local exec_prefix = ${prefix} bindir = ${exec_prefix}/bin libdir = ${exec_prefix}/lib mandir = ${prefix}/man includedir = ${prefix}/include *snip** Change "prefix = /usr/local" to "prefix = /usr". That's all. Save and exit. Now from the "sox" CVS dir do make install And you will see stuff happen. You should be root as you do "make install". Now do "sox -h" and you should see the following: _ [elx@tamriel elx]$ sox -h sox: Version 12.17.3 Usage: [ gopts ] [ fopts ] ifile [ fopts ] ofile [ effect [ effopts ] ] gopts: -e -h -p -v volume -V fopts: -r rate -c channels -s/-u/-U/-A/-a/-i/-g/-f -b/-w/-l/-d -x effect: avg band bandpass bandreject chorus compand copy dcshift deemph ear
