Grazie, tutto risolto.

Hai diversi modi modi:

Control-Alt-F7

- dai, come root, init 3. Il sistema viene re-inizializzato in modalità
console.

It has been brought to our attention by several officials visiting our establishment
in Rome that offensive language is commonly used by our Italian speaking staff.
Such behaviour, in addition to violating our policy, is highly unprofessional and
offensive to both visitors and staff.
All personnel will immediately adhere to the following rules:

Words like cazzo, porca puttana or mi sono rotto il cazzo and other such
expressions
will not be tolerated or used for emphasis or dramatic effect, no matter how heated a
discussion may become.

You will not say ha fatto una cazzata when someone makes a mistake, or se lo stanno
inculando if you see someone being reprimended, or che stronzata when a major mistake
has
been made. All forms and derivations of the verb cagare are utterly inappropriate and
unacceptable in our environment.

No project manager, section head or administrator under any circumstances will be
referred
as figlio di puttana, coglione, testa di cazzo.

Lack of determination will not be referred to as mancanza di palle nor will persons
who
lack initiative be referred to as bradipo or cagone.

Unusual or creative ideas offered by the management are not to be referred as
pippe mentali or idee del cazzo.

   Do not say come rompe le palle nor ha rotto i coglioni if a person is persistent;
do not add
gli fa ancora male il culo if a colleague is going through a difficult situation.
Furthermore,
you must not say siamo nella merda (refer to item # 2) nor ci hanno aperti when a
matter becomes
excessively complicated.

When asking a someone to leave you alone, you must not vattene affanculo nor should
you ever
substitute May I help you? With che cazzo vuoi?

Under no circumstances should you ever call your elderly industrial partners vecchi
stronzi.

Do not say me ne sbatto when a relevant project is presented to you, nor should you
ever answer
ciucciami il cazzo when your assistance is required.

You should never call partners as frocio or mignotta; the sexual behavior of our
staff is not to be
discussed in terms such as culattone or bagascia.

Last but not least, after reading a note please don't say mi ci pulisco il culo.
Just keep it clean
 and dispose of it properly.

Thank you.

 *cd /usr/bin
 rm java javac jar
 ln -s /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.1_01/bin/java java
 ln -s /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.1_01/bin/javac javac
 ln -s /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.1_01/bin/jar jar*

apposita, poi configurarlo con make xconfig (o menuconfig o config)

[newbie-it] preemptive

2002-11-29 Thread miKe
Alle 11:41, venerdì 29 novembre 2002, Fabio Manunza ha scritto:

..Orgh...cioè, che vuol significare preemptive? Ho già sentito
 questa definizione, ma non ho trovato spiegazioni;

molto semplicemente,
quali verranno eseguiti i processi.

Vale.

basta eliminare in fstab supermount?

RE: [newbie] Kernels

2002-11-29 Thread Franki
I'll answer the second question first..

don't install 2.5.x if you want a stable system, its a dev kernel..
eventually to become standard when it hits 2.6.x.

as for the 2.2.10 kernel, no, don't run it on a mandrake system, you'll have
all manner of probs.

better you join the kernel mailing list and get directions to get a patch
for the 2.4.18/19 kernels...

Someone must have ported them accross...

if you get a patch, then install the kernel src rpm, and add the patch,
compile it and your off and running.
it's easier then it sounds.

Is there any reason why someone would/should not run an older kernel?
I've got some gigabit ethernet cards that only have drivers for 2.2.10. I

find a way to force them to work with 2.4.18 or downgrade to 2.2.10.

Also, is there any reason to try 2.5.x?

Overall, though, I'm still perplexed over the entire desktop war bit
-
linux is an OS that allows you to have YOUR OWN CUSTOMIZED DESKTOP -
but
unless you're a bit adept at customizing, you're stuck with mainstream

 despise.

This seems like a good time and place to ask what is a desktop
environment? As opposed to a window manager. From an X windows point of

Well it's total nonsense because joining Mandrake Club does not get you a
boxed set.

As usual Mandrake have made a rod for their own backs by releasing the
download edition *weeks* before they are ready to ship the boxed sets so
creating dissatisfaction among purchasers of the boxed sets, and driving
potential sales towards the download edition.

They do it because they really truly believe in the spirit of OpenSource.
Where Suse will delay releasing the online edition until *after* boxed sets
are in the shops, and then make it difficult to get the online edition by
making it network install only, Mandrake allow free and easy access of an
edition with everything but commercial applications. They should be
applauded for it. But it makes lousy business sense.

Personally I find Mandrake Club a better way of supporting Mandrake than
buying boxed sets. I get access to the same packages as in the boxed sets
(sans StarOffice), and more of the money ends up in Mandrake's pocket as
opposed to distribution channels.

Fw: [newbie] alcatel speed touch pro Mand9

2002-11-29 Thread greg

 Hi Charlie,

where he says in his advice about changing my vpi/-vci values what does he
mean. I have never heard of this. Also, I don't need a user name or
login,
my computer runs through my router (the alcatel speed touch pro), and that
negotiates the connection to my isp. It is always on. I am still having
no
luck getting the thing to work. Really, all I should have to do is give
it
the right info, as below, and it will all work. Is there a bug in
Mandrake
or something, cause this is starting to bug me. As I said, Red Hat 8
worked
right out of the box. Windows even works straight off the mark, with no
 configuration.

 Anyone have any more suggestions?

 thanks greg

 Barry
The drivers were apparently sourced for those two kernels - you also
have the choice of looking through the code of the 2.4.18 kernel source
and possibly taking a chance at compiling them anyways - for the 2.4.19
kernel...that is, unless you really want to give 2.5.x a go...that never
hurts anyone, and you can simply just try it out by having the kernel
installed on floppy so that you can easily go back to your normal
kernel without making modifications to your /boot or your
/boot/initrd.img or your /etc/lilo.conf - and if it DOES work out, well,
then you can do a make install of the kernel source, run lilo, and use
the new kernel instead...

Personally, though, I'd be picking through the 2.4.18 code and seeing
what mods need to be made in order to compile it for the 2.4.19
kernel...then if that didn't work, well, on to 2.5.x ! (grin)

But that's me...

If your router is working for windows already and has run OK on RH8 the it
MUST be your MD9
TCP/IP settings that are incorrect. I assume you can ping the router or
access the WEB STYLE config page ...
Suggest you have a close hard look at the TCP/IP settings , in particular
the Gateway IP and the DNS settings.

If you know the IP of an ISP or favourite web site, try to ping it by name
and by IP.
If you get a response by IP only then the DNS settings are wrong, if you get
no response to either then the gateway
is wrong and leads me to ask can you ping your router (by IP) ?? If you are
using static IP's, check you have not mis-typed the IP's so the router and
computer are in different subnets. You dont say whether your windows is
static IP or using the router and getting an IP from it's inbuilt DHCP

Re: [newbie] Smartmedia Reader

In a word yes.
I have a Zio USB SM reader which is RW in Windows but read only in Linux -
(Pauses to plug it in, insert SM card and check that it is readable)

For my convenience I created a mount point /mnt/Zio which uses /dev/sda1 as
it's device, then I just go to Removable media, click on Zio and it opens
/mnt/memory_card which I didn't create - it was done by the system and does
not appear as Removable media.
I then navigate through to mnt/memory_card/dcim/100olymp which is the
naming convention used by my camera in this case and open the image, which I
can then save onto the HD. I can, and have copied files over to a windows
directory and saved them to SM that way. If it helps my fstab and mtab are

No, not advisable, the windblows go together on there own bootloader
linux OS's can be intergrated into windblows but don'r bother, it's

[newbie] SmartMedia attempts have screwed me up

2002-11-29 Thread Anne Wilson
Since I attempted to mount the SM card yesterday, my LS120 drive is not
mounting. The Removable Media icon no longer lists it as a second floppy.
HardDrake lists it as sda, my fstab line (which has worked since
installation) is

none /mnt/LS120 supermount
dev=/dev/sda,fs=auto,--,iocharset=iso8859,sync,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0

I was able to manually mount /mnt/LS120 and list the files, so I unmountted
and tried to invoke supermount. After reading the message I tried

supermount -m=/mnt/LS120 enable

This resulted in all the entries from fstab being listed.

The padlock no longer shows in Konqueror, but even in SU mode I can't list the
files in Konq.

There must be a way to get this back to where it was before?

Any ideas, anyone?

I think every newbie panics at the first sight of having to configure
your Internet settings
for the first time.
In linux there are two apps , one kppp gets you logged on to your ISP
the other is the browser/emailer.

your question is how do I configure kppp.

best thing really is to go back to windblows,
but up it's dialer, click on all the settings you can find under setup
there are a couple of dozen windows, use windblows screensave
app to save and print off each window, stable them together
and use them to help you figure out the settings for kppp.

See how you get on.

  stages of the install itself.

Have you tried disabling the PNP settings in BIOS?

So, I did more experimentation on my setup.
 Apparently
any IDE devices plugged into the motherboard IDE
controller are not being recognized by the
 Mandrake
installed kernel as well as the Mandrake Install
 CD
kernel. How do I know this? Because I have a
 PCI-IDE
bridge too and when I plugged my CDRom and the
 hard
disk into this controller and boot from the floppy
using the cdrom.img on it, the install starts
recognizing these. However this way, I cannot use
CDROMs and my main HDD to boot my PC at all (will
 have
to use floppy all the time) and I dont wish to
  configure this way.

Anyone seen any similar problems before with
ABIT-BD-711 or some other motherboard? Any
 pointers
  will be appreciated.

  Thanks in advance,
  Nikunj.

There must be a way to get this back to where it was before?

OK, so whereas symlinks are system functional, aliases are bash script
functional
and in effect save time and effort initiating programmes that are
themselves various
versions of bash, and bash scripts, like perl, and python, but then
forgive me if I'm wrong
but haven't I seen aliases that start programmes, which in themselves
are not bash
scripts, or is that not so , and in fact there is a bash script but it's
embedded in some way
so you don't really see it in some file that starts the whole app.

John, let me give you an example of how aliases work for me. I use WineX to
play Windog games under Linux. Sometimes, the commands to start these games
are a little, well...long winded. For example, to run Half-Life here, I use
the command (all one line):

winex /home/darklord/.transgaming/c_drive/SIERRA/Half-Life/hl.exe -console
-gl -gldrv Default -w 1024 -game MOD

Obviously, typing this in all the time would be a real drag, so I put an
alias into /home/darklord/.bashrc (all one line):

alias halflife='winex
/home/darklord/.transgaming/c_drive/SIERRA/Half-Life/hl.exe -console -gl
-gldrv Default -w 1024 -game MOD'

Now, I just type in halflife and the game starts.

Its just another way to make life easier for yourself... :-)

That sounds an interesting idea, so when I run NT now called d4x and because
the gui lacks a tab to tell nt that after a cutoff and ISP reconnect it
must go
reconnect to the web address again, I could set up an alias that would
not only put up nt but also save me the bother of having to put up a
terminal
and type nt -r , which means reconnect, and include it with the command to
initiate nt gui as well. Possible ?

NT sits in /usr/bin/nt
additional command nt -r

can I make an alias that combines the two

with a simple terminal command nt

 Checker.

1.Go to Mandrake Control Centre and click on Add Software.
2.Click Workstation and then openoffice. You will see myspell for
   different languages, I chose myspell-en_GB.
3.Click install Software and close Mandrake Control Centre.
4.Open openoffice writer. Click Tools options Language Setting
Writing Aids Select Language Edit tick myspell spelling, then
   ok.

I have myspell and several languages loaded, but no amount of
tinkering with the options will get the spellcheck to work - it just
flashes through the document and gives me a dialog box saying that
all is OK. Oh well, one more reason to boot back into windows :-(

[newbie] Stall at Boot due to PCMCIA problem on Toshiba Laptop

2002-11-29 Thread Scott Smith
Hi all.

I just installed Mandrake 9.0 on my Toshiba laptop (Satellite 2545XCDT).
When I tried to boot it up for the first time it got to the part where it
says Starting pcmcia: and then it just hung.
I looked in the archives and saw that someone else had a similar problem on
a laptop in September 2002 but I saw no replies for fixes.

Is there a way I can find better error messages?
Does anyone have any idea what this error might be?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Bad habit, answering my own posts, but I've just discovered that OO

As far as XCDRoast?...how!? I can only see the buttons for copying

If you want to make data backups, which is what I use it for, you need to
first ensure that it has identified your writer. Once that is done, go to
Master Tracks (don't be put off by the language). Navigate on the right-hand
column. Highlight a directory that you want to add, and click 'add'. You
can display and add individual files. You can exclude files or directories
in just the same way.

You must 'calculate' on the last tab before you can burn. You may find error
messages indicating that you need to turn off Joliet extensions.

Come back if you need more help.

Well, they allow you to create shortcuts to often used programs
wherever you like them to be - they allow programmers to link to libs in
nested directory structures, they allow you to create links to actual
devices (ex: /dev/hdc -- /dev/cdrom, /dev/hdc -- /dev/dvd,
/dev/ttySH012 -- /dev/modem)...

Before the advent of large drives, the unix file structure was generally
spread out amongst several drives - two or more - so sometimes linking
was the best way to access binaries outside of the normal path - hence
alleviating path modification...

There are other ways of creating links, and links don't always have to
be just shortcuts...they can be compiled programs with switches and
options already set in them...

I have noticed the problems people are having with Nvidia and 9.0.

 For myself, Geforce2 mx400 - I had no problems with either 8.2 or 9.0
I made sure I d/led the source files (tar.gz), installed what ever was
needed for tar.gz and followed the instructions on the Nvidia site. And
as long as I see the Nvidia splash screen just be X starts, I know
 everything went well.

On one note however, I changed my system to not load X on startup. It
is a hassle, but it does prevent problems if things are not working
right - and I am always (will always is the correct term) learning Linux
and attempting to learn/configure something new all the time and using
init level 3 is just more sensible.

Just a thought, maybe just under Mandrake and not any of the other Linux
flavors, your irq's are being assigned differently and thus you are
experiencing irq conflicts which could cause lockups and such.

Terry has already offered his XF86Config-4 file if you need it - but if
you want to compare (which I am sure the specific settings you need are
the same in both of our XF86Config-4 files) I can send/post mine if you
 would like.

Hello,
Firstly, wma is Windows Media Audio. asf (Active Streaming Format), or WMV is
for Video.
The Windows Media Encoder 8 is for windows only, however there are other
codecs like MPEG-4 that will offer the same quality/size bounds. WMV is also
notorious for editing problems, once it is WMV you're basically stuck to that
format, unless you use programs like VirtualDub.
Cinelerra at www.heroinevirtual.com is 10MB, it plays movies, edits movies
and will encode them. (IMHO, worth the download even on dialup).
Of course, in windows there is AIST MovieXone (free cutdown version), Adobe
Premiere etc.

Well, as you see, make and make install are not working because
your first step failed. (configure ended in error).

The output you got there means you don't hace gcc, which
is a program that is needed every time you ever need to
install software this way.

(what you downloaded is called sourcecode.
Surcecode is NOT an executable program, but rather a recipee to
 make it.

gcc is the compiler. that is, the program that reads the recipee
and creates the actual executable program.

configure is a script
that checks that you have all the necesary stuff you need to proceed
with that process. It found that you are lacking the compiler.

once you
install one, configure will finish successfully and you will be able to
tell your computer to make the program. and once that is ready
and gcc produced the executable files, you can finally make install them...)

now, to install your new compiler, simply do this first:

[root@derfel LinNeighborhood-0.6.5]# urpmi gcc

urpmi is Mandrake's tool to install packages that are
included with the distribution's CDs.

(kinda like add/remove windows components but with one
difference: urpmi is not only for components of the OS, but
for any other program as well)

After you call urpmi gcc, your cd-rom tray will pop up and ask you
for you mandrake CD's. put the cd in, hit enter, and let it do it's work.
once it's finished, try to ./configure again and see what happens.

 [root@derfel LinNeighborhood-0.6.5]# make
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
 [root@derfel LinNeighborhood-0.6.5]# make install
make: *** No rule to make target `install'. Stop.

you can do these two only after configure ends successfully.

What am I doing wrong? I have spent around 3 hours trying different
LinNeighborhood rpm's from different sites and the same thing happens at
the same stage, so I figure I must be doing something wrong.

You were doing nothing wrong. the only problem is, you were executing
these commands without wnowing what they are, so you had no way
of telling what to do in case something went wrong.

HTH

Damian
