i just fired up ksim and it says i've got 588M physical ram free. but why is
there a discrepancy between what it says when i check memory and in ksim?
any ideas?

[newbie] RAM question

2003-07-24 Thread crak600
ok, i was tooling around and decided to see how much ram i was currently
using. i have 768mb installed and linux knows it (running a 950 processor,
decent speed combo). so i look at i'm fluctuating between 5 and 20mb of free
ram left. so i think this just can't be right, i mean, to use up ALL that
ram when i all i hvae running is a media player, gaim, mozilla, and kmail.
so i do a search and i read that it's normal for linux to do this because
it's not actually using the ramm it's just keeping things stored there kinda
like a hard disc for when it has to use itor something like that. is
that really what it's doing? the system hasn't been running excessively
long, only about a day and a half.

anyway, this just boggled me and was wondering if anyone could inform me if
this is really true or if something is wrong here. thanks!

Mike

Ok, I've finally got it up and running. I needed to reboot the computer for KDM to
show XFce4. (Was that in your directions? I apologize, if it was, since that means I
wasted your time.) But, I wanted to say thanks a lot for helping me out and creating
the rpms for XFce4.

Hi,

You can use various themes in the panel. Click the "setup" button in the
panel > go to the panel settings and pick a theme. If you want to
mix and match, the theme icons are located in
/usr/local/share/xfce4/themes if you're using my rpm's.

Or, if you want to further customize the panel, you can find icons in
/usr/share/icons and /usr/share/pixmaps.

Menumaker will overwrite the default xfce4 menu (~/.xfce4/menu.xml), so
back it up if you want to keep it, or specify another output file (I
think it's the -o switch). Run it with "mmaker xfce4". You can find
options by running "mmaker -h".

No. IIRC, temperature monitoring dates back to the late 90's. The earliest
implementations just flashed a message window on the screen; they were not
accessible via external programs. Check your M/B manual; if you don't have
one, do some research on the Compaq site.

work with 8.1 but in that case go to rpmfind.net and search on lm_sensors. I

Not sure whether this will work or not. But you could try logging in as
root so the /home dir is not being used at all and then running diskdrake.
I think /home gets mounted automatically. Either edit it out of
/etc/fstab, or boot uo in recuse mode, in which cae nothing is mounted.

[newbie] Strange Behaviour by File Manager (Super User)

2003-07-24 Thread Graham Watkins
Opened Konqueror as super user last night with the intention of moving
some files from my user directory to my windows drive to which the user
does not have write permission (all prior to transferring them to UDF
formatted cd but you don't need to know that). However, when I tried to
access my user directory, the window displayed a web page - the UK
Mirror Service Homepage even though most of the links displayed on it
didn't work. This never used to happen.

Anyone know what's going on?

I'm using mdk 9.0

Before you can unmount a partition you have to stop using it.
If this partition is /home then it is being used by your login.

To get around the problem log in as root user (/root is on a different
partition)

(and before you say the graphical login does not allow you to log in as root
user MandrakeControlCentre>Hardware>LoginManager select kdm. On next boot the
login will allow root login)

I got it once. I downloaded the tar.gz, unpacked that and the binary is

Thanks, David, and to everyone who responded.

Changed Audacity's working directory from /tmp to /home/tmp - sound now
works (no, I can't figure it).

BUT, loading a large MP3 file (104Mb) starts off showing loading time
about 4 mins, goes down to 2mins 20 and then reboots computer. I can't
work out how, or why, this happens.

You have made exactly the same mistake again.
Instead of synthesis.hdlist2.cz you have typed hdlist2.cz

You only have to enter that ftp address in the url line of a browser and you
can see what the file is called.

I am curious. Why are you entering a 9.1 contrib source and calling it
'mozilla'. (Mozilla is not even in that source) I know from previous posts
you have already defined contrib sources before?

[newbie] Kmix, ALSA and saving levels.

2003-07-24 Thread James Henry Maiewski
Hello,

I'm fairly certain that this has been covered by this lidt, but I can't seem
to find it in the archives. My card is a SoundBlaster Audigy, and I'm
running Mandrake 9.1 with KDE 3.1.0. I'm also sorry that this sounds so
confusing.

First, I get XMMS playing.

Then I start Kmix(1.90), aumix and alsamixergui.

Now, adjusting either aumix or alsamixer will both change the volume, and
change the displays on each others GUIs, but not Kmix'. When I change Kmix'
volume, the other two immediately move to where Kmix' level is, and the
volume changes to what Kmix displays (However, when I place the mouse pointer
on the Kmix applet it will say "Volume at x%" where x is what ever the last
value of Kmix was until I move the mouse wheel and change the volume that way
(I love this feature by the way, very cool).

This is all strange, but as I include it only as it might give a clue as to
what is happening. Since I only need to use one mixer (and I love the Kmix
applet), the problem occurs when I reboot. Say I logged out with the volume
at 10% [by the way the 'x%,' which I get from the applet ranges from 0% to
31%, but seems corresponds to 0% to 100% on aumix]. When I reboot, the
actual volume out of the speakers is 10% (and the applet says "Volume at
10%"), but the slider on the display is maxed out. if I attempt to lower the
volume a little bit, the actual volume switches to a little bit below maxed
out (even though this is 31%, it's pretty damned loud!).

So, there it is. It actually is as strange as it sounds. Any suggestions
as to what to do, or whom to ask?

With an advance of thanks,

it is possible to add yourself or anyone else to a group like "wheel"

Title: RE: [newbie] Linux analog to iTunes & BuyMusic.

I'm a linux user because I love the culture.
I also love a freebie.

I frequently buy music at mp3.com and would like to have access to a greater selection.  Perhaps iTunes would work with the Linux crowd to improve their numbers over BuyMusic.

Is there a route to the OSS community producing our own "must have ears" music store?

Hello,

Perhaps a bit off topic, but I've gone to Apple's iTunes ("must have a Mac")
and BuyMusic ("must have IE" read: M$).  I do not support Linux in general
and Mandrake in particular because it is cheaper (which it is), but because I
like the product and wish to support open source.  Could it be that Linux
users, as a rule, are too interested in getting free stuff that an mp3 store
like those mentioned above (I especially like the idea that one can buy a
single song), even allowing Linux users to shop is unnecessary?

Why is it that the only time anybody gets their panties in a bunch is
when the talk turns political and controversial? There's a lot of
chatter on this list, much of which has nothing to do with Mandrake in
particular or even Linux. I've been skipping over messages about Aussies
and vegetables and what not (no offense!) today. It seems that if we're
going to say "no OT" then why not these tirades about the chit-chat? Is
somebody volunteering to be the moderator?

No, I think it's fine the way it is. I--and I'm sure most of
you--are fully capable of scanning an email and hitting the delete
button if it's something I don't care to read.

(A much more valid argument, I think, is consideration for those who pay
out the a$$ for their Internet connection.)

FW: [newbie] Remotely answer incoming fax?

Subject: [newbie] Remotely answer incoming fax?

I am looking for fax software that will let me remotely receive an
incoming fax. By which I mean:

In my restaurant I have one phone line, which is used for both voice and
fax. The phone is answered in the kitchen, and the fax machine was in
the office. When an incoming fax came in, the person answering the phone
only had to enter a remote answer code (*51) on the phone's keypad to
signal the fax machine to receive the incoming fax.

Now my fax machine has died and I'd like to do the same thing with my
computer's fax modem. So far I can't find any reference to any such
feature in Efax or HylaFAX (I'm assuming such a feature would have to be
implemented on the backend). Any leads, anyone?

I did ask about the -4 error on the tropie/sophie/virge
list, but I
haven't received any response. Nor have I received any
response on the
avamis list. The -4 error is not mentioned anywhere save
regarding an
install on Red Hat. Something about the compiler and links
unique to Red
Hat.

Here's another clue. After installing Trend, I was unable to
connect to
port 1812 as the manual instructs. I thought it was just a
configuration
gui, and since I think it's already configured OK I didn't
think about
it. I don't know if the port needs to be open to work with
Trophie or
not.

I'm going to go back and try setting up amavis to run as
amavis.amavis,
change permissions on the folders as described in the amavis
docs, and
recompile trophie to run as amavis.amavis. Argh!

Todd

I think thats the best way to go..

Last resport would be to look though the src of trophie and
see if you
can work out from that what is causing the -4.

As I understand it, trophie is sortof a daemon wrapper for
the trend engine.
I don't think the port 1812 is of any relevance.

Do the recompile, like I said, once I did, it worked
flawlessly.

Franki

How is that the fault of Mozilla? If you're not willing to take the time
to learn how to design a webpage (by learning about html and css etc.) I
don't know how switching tools is going to help you any.
You can produce web pages with Mozilla that will look the way you want
in IE so long as you're careful about things like fonts and CSS. HTML is
HTML, whatever you produce it with.

That said, you (arosene, not Todd) could try OpenOffice.

Sorry, I should have specified that I'm going through all the
interesting frontends on Sourceforge and Freshmeat, looking both for
this and several other features that I want. So far no luck, but there
are many frontends that I have yet to look at.

What concerns me more, however, is that I suspect that that this
particular feature would need to be implemented in the backend before a
frontend could offer it, and I can find no reference to such a feature
in the Efax or HylaFAX documentation. Does anyone know if what I am
looking for is even currently available in software, or am I going to
have to buy a fax machine to get this feature?

BTW and OT, my apologies for being so slow in my replies. Shortly after

Mozilla is designed to produce standards-compliant code. Any standards-compliant
browser (Mozilla, Opera, Konqueror, etc.) should be able to render it properly,
no matter what platform they are on (A page should look the same in Mozilla for
GNU/Linux as it does in the Windows version). The _browser_ is what matters, not
the OS.

If it doesn't look good, that is the fault of the browser. IE is a big offender
here. IE is still not fully standards-compliant, and Frontpage is deliberately
designed to make shonky code that only works in IE.

I did ask about the -4 error on the tropie/sophie/virge list, but I
haven't received any response. Nor have I received any response on the
avamis list. The -4 error is not mentioned anywhere save regarding an
install on Red Hat. Something about the compiler and links unique to Red
Hat.

Here's another clue. After installing Trend, I was unable to connect to
port 1812 as the manual instructs. I thought it was just a configuration
gui, and since I think it's already configured OK I didn't think about
it. I don't know if the port needs to be open to work with Trophie or
not.

I'm going to go back and try setting up amavis to run as amavis.amavis,
change permissions on the folders as described in the amavis docs, and
recompile trophie to run as amavis.amavis. Argh!

Not to mention the fact that this server space costs the company hosting it money.
Considering Mandrake's precarious financial condition, I believe it's unconcsionable
to waste it.
You may consider this post as a waste but in reality, it *is* Mandrake related and my
point
is a fact everyone should consider before posting here.

How is that the fault of Mozilla? If you're not willing to take the time

don't know how switching tools is going to help you any.

Maybe a network or boot-floppy installation (since they only have 3.5

works.

Debian 'woody' requires only 12 mb of ram and 110 mb of hard disk space.
Debian will run on 386 or higher. Of course this is an cli (command line
interface) only system. Such as not an gui (graphical user interface).
But if you are trying to learn 'linux' the cli is what you want. You can
download with windows everything you need to get started. Debian is NOT
an auto-install system, but the installation manual is very thorough. Be
prepared to do a lot of reading & learning. Debian is a throughly modern
'linux'. It has the best 'package' system. Once it is installed. you
should never have to install it again. It can be upgrade to a new
release 'in place'.

them if there is going to be a hamfest in your area soon. At most of the

Sorry Keith, but it is not for you, nor me to decide what goes, or does
not go on this list.
The owners of the servers supporting this list, I am pretty damn sure,
have the say.

It is my understanding that they set up this list to be a place where
people just getting into the linux-mandrake "experience" can gather and
discuss those thing pertaining to Linux-Mandrake. and while there is
great scope covered under that umbrella, most of the thread, beginning
with Anne's remarks (imho) do not belong on the newbie list. They would
be just great on the OT list tho.

I had the best (that's talking speed) results with Slackware7.1 on a simular
machine.
If you want more modern stuf try out Slack9.1, but don't try KDE or Gnome.
Using a leightweight window-manager makes it usable but fairly slow.

If you can get your hands on more RAM you get much better resultsabove 64M
you can even use a slow KDE3. Above that Mandrake9.1 will even run
acceptably.

Check out the speednix list Todd put up for more tips:

RE: [newbie] urpmi as a user and not root

2003-07-24 Thread Tony S. Sykes
Thanks all, I am going to look into sudo and rsync and see if any of
these fit the bill. Once I get something working I will post again to
let others know.

Thanks,

Tony.

To be honest, I don't know with any certainty, but I doubt
it

Other ideas that occured to me was to setup a proxy on that
internal machine and use iptables to transparently forward
all port 21 stuff to the proxy, and have the proxy user
registed with the winblows proxy...

lol... I still think it might be easier to find out what
user wget is running as.. and register that with the
firewall.

Actually, if he tries running Mandrakeupdate, and runs top
in a terminal, he may well be able to find out what user
wget is using to access the ftp servers..

Still, there are more problems with that as well.

I personally think he should use rsync to mirror the updates
dir on one of the FTP server
then add that rsync'd dir as an update source for urpmi...

The whole lot could run from cron.

regards

Franki

Frankie how about softlinking a directory to a remote site
and using that?
Wouldn't that be feasible? I've never tried so I don't know.

You can use quanta (it's on your CD's), but if you know nothing
at all about html, Open Office Writer lets you do html nicely.
