I have a Dell Inpiron i8600, and it works well, almost all the features now
supported out of the 10.1 box or with a little tweaking. IBM is obviously
another well suported brand, and HP has actually started selling a linux
laptop.

A couple of excellent on-line resources with lots of reviews and configuration
hints are:

As for wireless, there's the chipsets for which we have real drivers, then
there's Intel's Centrino chips and Broadcom's chips which are very common and
for which you would need to use NDISWrapper from
http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/ .

Any specific questions, feel free to ask.
John.

I have a Dell Inspiron 5150 and it is 99% functional. only thing I
couldn't get running was the dialup modem.
The wireless is broadcom, so the same ndiswrapper is needed to get that
working..
Nvidia driver for 3d video and the sound needed some tinkering, but then
worked fine.

I don't know about 100% ML compatability, but about quality of the
known brands:
I recall a Dutch magazine did a test with 7 different brands of
laptops and this was not just a laboratory test, they took 'em into
the heat of the Saharah, the cold of the Artic and the wets of the
jungle.
The purpose was eventually to get them really broken and most of pack
couldn't handle the heat, two couldn't handle the extreme cold, just
one unknown japanese brand survived the test.
And the test-team expected to make it the honorable award-winner by
smashing it with a sledgehammer.
Though the TFT screen and the keyboard both were totally carnage, when
an external monitor and keyboard were connected, the laptop was still
performing like nothing happened :P

The moral of the story:Quality is not hidden in the name of the beast.

They say that 95% of laptops are made by only 3 or 4 big manufacturers,
and that includes all the big brand names..
The manufacturer of Dell laptops is usually Quanta, and Compal make a
good many of the others.

[newbie] USB Flash Drive Config.

Hi all,
I know there was a thread on this not long ago but it didn't answer my
problem. I am on Mdk 10 and in order to get my Traveling Disk 2.0 USB Flash
Drive to work I had to make a directory /mnt/memstick then mount it using
#mount -t vfat /dev/sda /mnt/memstick.
I had read on the list that Mdk 10 should recognise the drive and put an icon
on the desktop. If this is the case why is it not happening here.

[newbie] MandrakeMove Download edition config.

2004-10-03 Thread Simon Utley
Hi, does anyone know if you can configure Shorewall on the download edition of
MandrakeMove. I can open the files as root but when I go to save the newly
configured file it won't allow me. Is this because I am reading the file off
the CD Rom and am unable to write to it?
I cannot get the MCC firewall set up either, default is no Firewall. If I
change its configuration it does not save the changes and I cannot get
iptables to start.(I presume they are tied into this firewall).
Can one do these config changes with the Mandrakesoft packaged product only?
It also doesn't recognise my USB Flash Drive although it is on the list of
recognised USB drives for MdkMove.

Simon, Check to see if you have hotplug installed and that it's
starting at boot time, then make sure that you've configured your
desktop to display your mountable device icons - otherwise they may
mount, but they won't show up on the desktop.

Check for the mountable icons in KcontrolLook'n'Feelbehavior. Check
the third tab especially and make sure that the checkbox is checked.

[newbie] Screen lock and password not resolving

2004-10-03 Thread Terence Golightly
List,

I tried posting a thread concerning this problem last week but w/o much
help. I recently changed my user password (at a moment of minor paranoia
about a misperceived system compromise). Well, this is where my problem
begins.

From gdm I can login, and my desktop appears. Now if I want to leave my
box for awhile, I click on my little gnome footprint select the lock
screen icon and the screensaver comes on and if I touch a key or move
the mouse a security popup appears with my username and a password
prompt. I enter my password, I receive an error message incorrect
password. What to do? I don't know where to begin looking.

Linux no soporta la escritura en NTFS.

Existe algun programa experimental pero no se recomienda.

Tenias que haber creado una partici?n puente en FAT32.

This may be of little help but I once had a similar problem and it
was something to do with pam. Been a while and I don't remember the

As root type draklog with out quotes. The log may give you a clue

2.) Open a term, run oaf-slay and bonobo-slay and

[newbie] adding windowmanager to login

2004-10-03 Thread Chris
I installed Afterstep 2.0 yesterday, I like the looks, but it will take some
figuring out after all these years of using KDE. Question I have is adding
AS to my login manager. I've added 08AfterStep to my /etc/X11/wmsession.d
file as such:

NAME=AFTERSTEP
DESC=Afterstep
EXEC=/usr/X11R6/bin/afterstep
SCRIPT:
exec /usr/X11R6/bin/afterstep

I also modified /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc and added AS after IceWM:

SessionTypes=KDE,GNOME,WindowMaker,Enlightenment,BlackBox,XFce,IceWM,AfterStep,failsafe,default

Afterstep shows up on the login manager, however selecting it opens IceWM
instead. From looking at the /usr/X11R6/bin/RunWM script I have everything
in the right place but it won't load. I have an $HOME/.xinitrc file which
contains the following:

#!/bin/sh
exec afterstep

So, can someone lead me down the correct path? I'm sure its easy but I just
can't seem to locate the problem.

Thanks

In all honesty, I prefer launching WM's from runlevel 3 - as you give
yourself more system resource without having the DM running - and if you
take that as the case, you can install Xtart which will identify most of
the installed WM's you may have...besides that, living in runlevel 3
gives you more flexibility to experiment and troubleshoot issues with
X...

 There you have to add the path to were you placed part library.

No! I had no choice. There is only one library available on the web site and it's a
.zip file. I suppose it's because it's the same lib for windows and linux. Anyway, I
don't think it makes a difference.

I always boot at level 3, but at the same time i am lazy and don't
like to have to start X after i login.

So i have my .bash_profile setup so that if i log into tty 1, it
automagically launches my favorite window manager, sylpheed, rox and
firefox.

If i log into any of the other ttys, i just get the prompt.

 file as such:

 NAME=AFTERSTEP
 DESC=Afterstep
 EXEC=/usr/X11R6/bin/afterstep
 SCRIPT:
 exec /usr/X11R6/bin/afterstep

 I also modified /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc and added AS after IceWM:

 SessionTypes=KDE,GNOME,WindowMaker,Enlightenment,BlackBox,XFce,IceWM,AfterStep,failsafe,default

 Afterstep shows up on the login manager, however selecting it opens IceWM
 instead. From looking at the /usr/X11R6/bin/RunWM script I have everything
 in the right place but it won't load. I have an $HOME/.xinitrc file which
 contains the following:

 #!/bin/sh
 exec afterstep

 So, can someone lead me down the correct path? I'm sure its easy but I just
 can't seem to locate the problem.

I believe the NAME you gave in wmsession.d is case-sensitive, so in
kdmrc you have AfterStep where is should be AFTERSTEP. At least I think.

pointless to keep both .zip and .tar.bz2 format.

[newbie] Maelstrom and other games cause freezes after 9.2 - 10.0 upgrade

2004-10-03 Thread Mark Stosberg
Hello,

I'm helping my friend Kurt Ritchie who recently switched to Linux.
( His Linux switch story is here:
http://mark.stosberg.com/Tech/linux_switch/ritchie.html ).

I recently gave him my 10.0 CD set as I anticipate the new release
coming out.

So here's the 9.2 - 10.0 upgrade problem I'm trying to troubleshoot:

Launching some games, like Maelstrom, now completely freezes the machine,
when it didn't before. The cursor quit moving, and the keyboard
completely quit responding. (Pressing Caps Lock doesn't even turn
on the Cap Lock light).

I tried capturing the output of the launch in a file:

Maelstrom 21 file.txt

After the necessary hard reboot, my file.txt isn't created.

I tried using both 2.4 and 2.6 kernels with the same result.

What else could cause something like this?

There is one thing that is a little unusual about the machine: It was
200Mhz processor that I used a special upgrade kit to allow to take a
700Mhz processor. That has worked great, and has not been responsible for
any problems that I've aware of.

I checked the ChangeLog for Maelstrom and didn't see anything unusual
around the 9.2 - 10.0 releases. Considering that other games have
the problem, I imagine it's something more general.

If you have ideas about the general direction I could look in, that
would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Mark
