Anne I just had a look at KDar, and it seems to have all the features I need and it looks easy to use. I've been using DrakBackup until now, which was somewhat unwieldy, so I probably haven't been backing up as often as I ought to have been! At first glance, KDar has one enormous advantage over DrakBackup - it can be run by an ordinary user, whereas DrakBackup has to be run as root. I can understand why most of the Drak Drake functions need to be run as root - we don't want users messing with configuration options they might not understand - but backups? Surely we should be *encouraging* users to make backups, rather than preventing it? -- Regards Margot *-*-*-* Sent using Mozilla on a 100% Microsoft-Free Computer Registered Linux User 307617 http://counter.li.org Mandrakelinux release 10.1 (Community) for i586 kernel 2.6.8.1-20mdk ~~~ I have a very small mind and must live with it. -- E. [newbie] Start page of Konqueror??
Is there a way to have a specific web site open in Konqueror whenever it starts, using KDE (GUI) only? My broadband ISP, Road Runner, is a cable operation. The following site, http://www.rr.com/flash/;, is its home page and can be set by me to reflect the exact local news, local weather, and global headlines in which I am interested. Under Windows, I can use Tools/Options/General/Home Page/Use Current Page to open my browser to Road Runner's home page whenever I start Mozilla-Firefox or any other browser. MY question is: Is there a SIMPLE (meaning non-programming) KDE/GUI method, similar to Windows, to configure Konqueror to open to Road runner's home page whenever I start Konqueror? I do not understand programming, and at my age I don't want to have to start to learn it now. I would like to stop using Windows and I thought KDE/GUI would allow me to continue using my computer without trying to understand written commands, etc. That is the main reason I chose Mandrake. Is it possible to do what I want in Linux and specifically in Mandrake 10.1? Thank you, Andy BTW I am beginning to think I like Konqueror better than Firefox. It's appearance is cleaner, less clutter, and it is a lot faster. Also, the Road Runner start page using Windows has better fonts than when using Konqueror. I am not certain but I think the fonts in RR start page using Windows is Sans while the font when using Mandrake KDE is definitely different and much harder for me to use. Also the contrast is poor. I don't understand why this is true for Road Runner's home page under KDE - because other sites I open while using Konqueror are OK. Is there a way to fix this? [newbie] Installing kbluetooth
When I start 10.1 I get the message you may replace bluez's pin helper program with kbluepin; it is located in /user/lib/kdebluetooth now. How EXACTLY do I do this? What did it do and what will it do after the change? Sorry if these questions are so basic. Maybe I do not belong in the Linux or perhaps the Mandrakelinux operating system. What do you think? Because I do not understand *anything* about programming, should I not use 10.1? Please be honest about this because I hate to bother you all with such basic questions. I am using a $12.99 set of six CDs. I have ordered the packaged 10.1 from MandrakeStore. [newbie] Odd mouse behaviour in 10.1
Yesterday I decided to try and install 10.1 on a Dell C840 laptop that's on my desk, connected via a KVM. The install went well (much better than 10.0 as it actually installed in the dock and sees the Ethernet card), but an old behaviour came back with the install - the mouse freaks and doesn't resync when I switch to and from with the KVM (PS/2 mouse, keyboard works fine). The normal 'trick' is to force the psmouse module to use one simple config for the mouse, but with the new kernel the old psmouse module is not present. Anyone know why the psmouse module is missing? RE: [newbie] Start page of Konqueror?? Success Once only
Well, Dennis, the instructions you gave DID work, but for only one time. After a complete shut down, I attempted something I never did before. At the KDE 3.2 flash screen, I clicked on the globe icon and went directly to the start page I have been trying to get. However, I tried to recreate that success five more times and could not recreate it once. I tried only restarting and booting from a totally shut down system. Couldn't recreate that success. Don't know why. This way you can keep another page/directory for use with Konqueror's home button. Myself I like to start with a blank page, so I enter about:blank in the adress field and hit Return before I save the profile. As for the fonts problem, I have no clue. Björn Olss that is a puzzle. I am trying to recreate the problem and now can not get past the Mandrake welcome page. Looks like something needs editing for a perminent fix. Anyone know why the psmouse module is missing? Answered my own question by looking at the kernel config - psmouse is configured into the kernel instead of being a module (duh, and I was just getting used to the module business.) Anyway, adding append=psmouse.proto=imps to the /etc/lilo.conf (and remembering to reload the changed params) and it's back up and running. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Installing kbluetooth
On Saturday 15 Jan 2005 10:08 pm, Andy Yankovich wrote: When I start 10.1 I get the message you may replace bluez's pin helper program with kbluepin; it is located in /user/lib/kdebluetooth now. How EXACTLY do I do this? What did it do and what will it do after the change? It's bluetooth, the short range wireless thingy that talks to mobile phones, (and other stuff, but mainly phones.) If you don't use it you can very safely ignore the message. The pin helper is the program that asks for a six(?) digit number when pairing with a device. kbluepin will just ask for the number with a nice window. Sorry if these questions are so basic. Maybe I do not belong in the Linux or perhaps the Mandrakelinux operating system. What do you think? Because I do not understand *anything* about programming, should I not use 10.1? Please be honest about this because I hate to bother you all with such basic questions. 1. that's not a basic question. As of 9.2, bluetooth was bleeding edge technology in Linux. (It may be more mainstream in 10.1) 1a. We really don't care how basic a question is. This is the Newbie list - many questions here are basic. We're happy to help. 2. You don't need to know anything about programming to use Linux, any more than Windows. 2a. What knowledge you need, you'll pick up over the next few weeks without noticing. The average time between someone appearing on this list as a total newbie, and answering a question themselves is about a month. 3. You need to know _less_ about computers to use Linux safely and securely than you need to use Windows safely and securely. 3a. No viruses, little or no spyware, software designed to be secure from the ground up and fantastic support. I am using a $12.99 set of six CDs. I have ordered the packaged 10.1 from MandrakeStore. When they arrive should I delete what is now installed, and then install the MandrakeStore CDs Will that be preferred? What does the label say on those CDs? If they are 10.1 Community Edition it may be worth upgrading. Since I am still using 9.2 I'll let others tell you how worthwhile it is. -- Richard Urwin Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] guide-blender in english?
The guide-blender package installed by urpmi is in french. I've also checked here http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/21/year/2004/month/04/day/22 and it seems that they are all french here too. Is there an english version? Sorry, but I dont know which source urpmi installed from. It was either from the 10.1 Official updates, jpackage, plf, contrib or main sources. Re: [newbie] Installing kbluetooth
What does the label say on those CDs? If they are 10.1 Community Edition it may be worth upgrading. Since I am still using 9.2 I'll let others tell you how worthwhile it is. Be very careful upgrading from 9.X to 10.x. There is some hardware that 9.X will configure and 10.X will into spasms with, in particular IBM Thinkpads. Also consider that for some hardware notably IBM Thinkpads you can install the DVD version and apparently the CD version. The apparent comes from the fact that the CD/DVD reader used in Thinkpads only reads 99.9% of any given Mandrake CD correct which is enough most times for Mandrake to install and run but NOT run correct. An issue that is guaranteed to drive you nuts trying to figure out what is wrong. The issue with trying to install 10.X DVD in Thinkpads is that there is apparently some screwup in driver selection so an error message appears saying place 'Auxiliary Driver Floppie' in floppy drive. These 'Auxiliary Drivers' are located on the DVD and must be coppied to a NEW floppie which will accept 1.72 MB of data by the dd comand. If you attempt to use old floppies which would not accept 1.72 MB of data the drivers will NOT work. The assumption here is that you have a floppy and a DVD drive and a DVD drive. If you do NOT have BOTH then use some other method for installation. Frank Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? It is in the shape of a magnifying glass with a plus sign in it. Also, did you try in Konqueror -SettingsConfigure KonquerorFonts?
