[newbie] Frozen blue screen after upgrading kernel
This past week I worked on updating my Mandrake box from 10.0 to 10.1. Most of the application programs went well. The change over of the kernel took a bit more coaching for me from another Linux person but I got it to work (as far as I can tell). However, on the X system, all I get is a blue screen. The cursor (a plus sign with white edges) moves around but there are absolutely NO icons on the screen and no keystrokes work at all. This is even after running XFdrake (which did seem to do a bunch of configuring) and checking some things.with mcc at the prompt. The only way I got to a prompt has been through booting on Failsafe. Even another lilo entry of 2.6.3 raced to the blue screen and froze. I have been able to change it so that it now stops at the command line (whew!) so at least the machine can take commands. I still am relatively new to Linux and have a long ways to go. Since my field of specialty is in web work, I cannot work without a proper gui screen and browser. The system worked just fine under 10.0. What recommendations do you have? Mr. hopeful, Bill Mudry Mississauga, Ontario Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? The ADLS configuration should have a note that it is not for use when you are using a router. It is not what you need in this case. What you have to do is configure a normal DHCP Ethernet connection. The router will then set the network address, gateway, default route, and DNS for you. Once you have that working, you should be able to see the WEB interface of the router. One thing you should double check is that the address realy is 192.168.1.1 for the router. The best place is the router's manual, but you can also check by running /sbin/route -n in a terminal window. The last line should have the gateway address as something other then 0.0.0.0. Re: [newbie]
From: Igor B [EMAIL PROTECTED] I want to get a code of all Linux including terminal with shell and graphic environment In a technical sense there is no way to do this. You can approximate it many ways. The source for Linux itself can be obtained from www.kernel.org with a complete record of all its versions, developmental and production versions. (Good luck picking one that ideally suits you without a lot of study before hand.) This alone is not particularly useful, either. It has no particularly useful shell around it nor convenient ways to start and manipulate the various services that are inherent in the kernel, such few of them as there are. Now, if you want all of the source for a particular distribution of Linux you are still out of luck. Some source is not freely distributable. Notable among this is the NVidia graphics drivers. You have to use their binary distribution and take it on faith. You also get a very large compilation of source code. If your requirement is more sane and acknowledges that all Linux as used in the vernacular may mean all of the Open Source portions of a specific distribution then you can generally go to a mirror site for that particular distribution and find the source. Mandrake, Red Hat, Fedora, and probably some others use rpm as their packaging tool. The source files are located in SRPM or SRPMS directories on these sites. You have to commit some directory drilling to find them. But once found they are quite obvious. Start at the top level for the mirror, drill down until you find the distribution in which you are interested, one presumes Mandrake if you ask here. For Mandrake you can drill into official/10.1 to get to the interesting material for the latest material that is publicly available. Drill from there for the SRPMS for the distribution. You may also want to visit updates/10.1 to find updated SRPMS for the updated packages since 10.1 was released. The total download is probably 3 to 6 CDROMs. And unless you are running a Linux system that is more or less up to date they are useless as a stand alone. Bootstrapping Linux from raw source is not generally done with Mandrake Linux. I understand this is Debian's initial install mechanism, though. And once a minimalist Debian is installed you can use it to build your own install CDROMs for Mandrake Linux if that is your intent. Of course, the full set of SRPMS is interesting if you wish to audit a few bullion lines of code for some reason, such as a self appointed GPL policeman might wish to do. (And if you do find something missing that should be there politely inform the Mandrake people. I am sure they will rectify it as soon as their fingers can trek the keyboard with the correct commands to do so. {^_^} Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Modifying the KDE menu
Lanman wrote: Margot wrote: Did you remember to run update-menus -v as root, after installing or uninstalling software and before running menudrake? Or, update-menus -n if you're not interested in seeing the output, but as you're having problems the -v option would probably be more useful. Also, in menudrake, select Menu Style and choose the Original menus (the bottom option on the list) - I've never managed to get any of the other styles to work! Or, for a more radical solution, abandon KDE, use Xfce instead, and add Trigger Launchers to the panel for the applications that you need to use regularly. Thanks everyone for the suggestions, but I realized this morning that I didn't provide enough information. What I'm attempting to do is to essentially create a stripped down default menu, edited so that ONLY my list of preferred menu items are shown. Also, in the event that someone launched menudrake in the future, the most they would ever get (under any circumstances) would be the new default menu which I had created. I know that there has to be a menu list somewhere, since many of the Linux distributions use their own customized menus, and that's what I'm attempting to do as well. That way, anytime I install Mandrake for anyone, I can use this new menu as the default. So, in essence, I am trying to replace Mandrake's default menu with one of my own creation. Thoughts? Ideas? Inspirations? P.S. - Good Morning Margot! Sorry for taking so long to respond - I kind of forgot about this one. One way you can stop an item from apreaing in the menu is to delete the file for that item in /usr/lib/menu. But when you upgrande the package, it will probably be back. You could try creating an empty menu entry, and see how that works. Now, for some more reading on the topic, you may want to take a look at /usr/share/doc/menu - you will find a lot of information there, including pointers to the /etc/menu and /etc/menu-methods directories. Re: [newbie] Modifying the KDE menu
Mikkel L. Ellertson wrote: Sorry for taking so long to respond - I kind of forgot about this one. Have fun... Mikkel Thanks Mikkel. I've been experimenting with this for the last week or so, and I'm getting close. I've discovered and experimented with a lot of the files which KDE and Mandrake use to handle the menu and I'm almost done with my mods. Once I'm done, I'm going to save the modified files, do a fresh install, then all the updates, and (Phew!) then copy my modified files back into their proper locations. Hopefully, I'll end up with exactly the same menu and if so, I'll see if I can add it to the Wiki (time allowing). The folders you suggested were helpful in providing clues and also in eliminating files from consideration. Thanks again. [newbie] Hardward Compatability Question
Hey guys! My boyfriend's house has a wireless network, and everyone over there runs windows. I want to be able to have my computer hop on their network to connect to the internet if I drag my computer over there, and I was looking at the wireless B usb adapter from linksys. I can get it from work on clearance, and 10% off, plus a $10 mail in rebate. Information on the adapter is available here: http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=33scid=36prid=435 The question is, has anyone tried this guy... or do I need to attempt to google up help for it if I want to take a blind stab and see if I can get it to work? If at all possible, I would appreciate quick answers since I'm headed to another store in my district that should have it in stock (my store is out of stock) tonight to pick something else up for a customer. If I have to take a blind stab, I'll probably try anyways, since I can return it within 30 days if it doesn't work... I'd just be happier if I knew it should work before I try. I am still very much a newbie, so trying to get something like this installed will be an uphill battle for me knowing it will work, so I'm kind of afraid of going it blind. Thanks in Advance! The Linux Terminal Server Project - http://www.ltsp.org/ - There is a section on how to boot using PXE, and how to set up a server to do it. I have not used the PXE information, but I have set up Etherboot, and LTS before. Etherboot used to be nice for network installs - you loaded the network install floppy image over the network, and away you went. All it required was to install the NIC with the boot ROM in the machine. Mikkel -- Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with Ketchup! Any help would be appreciated. Yep I've been through that recently. What do you want to know? Its not too bad once you realise what is happening. First your PXE remote computer asks for an IP address from a DHCP server. The DHCP server passes the name of the 'next server' back with the IP address together with the name of an initial boot file. The PXE device then asks for the initial boot file from a tftp server on the 'next server'. Having got the boot file the PXE device starts booting itself. It then asks the tftp server for a compressed kernel/init file. Having received that it asks for a DHCP address again and then boots the kernel it has received and runs the init file. If you want to run a terminal server, then drakTermServ works out all the PXE stuff for you. It works really well. derek -- www.jennings.homelinux.net http://twiki.mdklinuxfaq.org Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? One step closer, still hopeful ;-) Bill -- Lanman Registered Linux User #190712 OK, Bill - Thanks for sorting out which card it is. It's possible that your card supports 3D acceleration (it most likely does), but unfortunately Mandrake (and most other downloadable distros of Linux) do not provide the 3D drivers for your graphics card. In order to do that, you would need to download and compile drivers from ATI. It would be a lot simpler to switch over to vesa and at least get a functional desktop before venturing off into 3D land. Log into your system using a shell/terminal/console as root and run XFdrake from the command line. Once it starts, the first option in the list selects your graphics card even though a 3D acceleration driver is not present for it. Scroll up the list until you reach the top (probably called Vendor) and switch to the Xorg list. Once that list opens, scroll down to and select the one called vesa. Once you return to the main menu, select test from the list. If you see the test screen, then everything is good. Once the test exits, go to the Options section in the menu and make sure it's set to start X when the system restarts. That should do it. Still as root in a console, run the command service dm start and you should get your login box. If that doesn't do it, then you might want to consider moving to an older version of Mandrake (ie; 9.2) and doing a fresh install. -- Lanman Registered Linux User #190712 Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? I rang their contact number this morning, they can't switch it off as it is company policy to have this switched on and they cannot touch his mail system. If it's getting a problem then you can either bounce back, perhaps to the admin. Ignore it until he gets back or get the admin here to disable his mail. Cheers, Elwyn If it's a big problem, i can unsub the address. He'll get a note saying he was unsubbed. But he'll still see this HUGE thread with his name in it. :) eric -- Mandrake HowTo's More: http://twiki.mdklinuxfaq.org Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? The screenshot is at http://www.kde-look.org/content/preview.php?preview=1id=20260file1=20260- 1.pngfile2=file3=name=Metal4kde-0.1f_beta+-+gentoo+ebuild Transparent and on the right hand side of the desktop. Thanks, Bill W. It looks like Superkaramba (if I remember it correctly. It's been a while since I've used it.) If you use Reply but change the subject, you are hijacking. Does this mean if you change the 'subject' field, or the topic of the thread? Reading it, it would seem to mean the former. But common sense tells me the latter. If you use Reply to get up a form, then erase the subject and type in something different, you are hijacking. What Anne said is correct, and is what the etiquette page refers to. Just to prevent future confusion, i'll add a little to it. We often do call it a hijack if you change the topic during a thread even if you don't change the subject. Usually it's a case of going off on a tangent. Sometimes people will realize it and add HIJACK to the subject line, but i've never seen a ruling on that. Like i said though, what Anne said is really the answer to your question. eric -- Mandrake HowTo's More: http://twiki.mdklinuxfaq.org Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Dear All Mandrake Users, I am using Mandrake Linux 9.1 to do my Master degree research project with University of Malaya, Malaysia... My problem is, I have to install a network simulator called NS2 version ns-2.1b9 on my Linux platform but the Linux gcc 3.2.2 would support my ns-2.1b9...The problem is because of the gcc version and my supervisor advised me to downgrade the gcc version to any lower version... Can someone kindly tell me how to do this downgrading?...I am very-very new to Linux environment and afraid of touching any sensitive areas in it... Please help...I really would appreciate your help... Thank you... Regards, Vathsala Devi Master of Computer Science University of Malaya, Malaysia Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! [newbie] KPPP fail in Mdk 9.1
Gentle folks, I use KPPP to dial-in my ISP. Whenever I dial-up for the first time (after the system boot up), the link gets broken and the next time the link is fine. Of course, using the proper username and password both tries. Is there any reason why it doesn't accomplish the negotiation with ISP's systems at first? I don't change any params and just dial-up the second time and then the connection is ok. Misko Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
