[newbie] Signature script

2004-05-04 Thread Chris
Well, I'm lost on this one. I'm definately no script guy and I can't figure
out why the 'fortune' line doesn't work when the script is ran in Kmail but
works when ran from the CLI. Any ideas on where I'm screwing up?

#!/bin/bash
echo "Regards"
echo "Chris"
echo "A 100% Microsoft Free Computer"
echo "Registered Linux User 283774 http://counter.li.org";
STR=$(uptime)
TIME=${STR% user}
RESULT=${TIME%}
echo $RESULT
fortune MS-FORTUNES
if [ -p /tmp/xmms-info ] ; then echo "The current tune is $( grep Title:

Marc, I use "backerupper" it will backup whatever you want into a .zip file
and put it where ever you want. I regularly backup my entire $HOME
partition as well as me /etc to another drive then write to a cd. If you
want I'll send it over.

[newbie] Can't get procmail to forward spam

2004-04-03 Thread Chris

Yes, I'm a procmail newbie trying to setup procmail to forward my spam to
Earthlinks junkmail address. I've setup a $HOME .procmailrc file (below)

SHELL=/bin/sh

PATH=$HOME/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/ucb:/bin:/usr/local/bin:.
MAILDIR=$HOME/Mail # You'd better make sure it exists
# DEFAULT=$MAILDIR/mbox
LOGFILE=$MAILDIR/from
# LOCKFILE=$HOME/.lockmail

:0c
*^X-Spam-Status: Yes
|/usr/bin/reporter.pl

:0a
Spam/

The "Spam" folder is in maildir format in $HOME/Mail/Spam. I've setup a
$HOME .forward file

"|IFS=' ' && p=/usr/bin/procmail && test -f $p && exec $p -Yf- || exit 75
#chris"

I've read the FAQ, printed and gone through the man pages, my question is
how is procmail started. I'm running Kmail as my mailer with all mail
filtered through SA. If procmail is started from the CLI, the process is
shown as running, but I'm sure that this isn't the correct way to start it.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. My spam folder is in maildir
format, do I need to tell the procmailrc file that my mail dir is
$HOME/Mail/Spam/cur before it will forward?

Appreciate any help.

Thanks
Chris

Did you make a sig file? I'm using Kmail and heres what I have setup for my
signature:

In my setup I have "Obtain signature from output of command"

Then the command is:

/home/chris/makesig.pl-0.0.9/makesig.pl sig.txt

Below is my sig.txt file:

beginconfig(
maxlines=20
    footerfile=uptime|
sigdashes=yes
)endconfig

If I read the thread correctly you want to have a sig similiar to mine? If
so, why not use a little perl script called "makesig.pl" If you want it
I'll send it over or just google/linux for it.

How about this, got it from this list quite awhile back, I can't remember

I run Tom Brinkmans bacd (thanks Tom) alias file. Works great and all on

#!/bin/bash

mp3file="$*"
mkdir wav

for file in "$@" ; do

Works fine with 9.0, java plugin is 1.3.1_04-b02, but I think this is kind
of funny:

 Note: Alchemy is not compatible with Unix or Macintosh computers.

Unless there is a downloadable version, I didn't check.

How about this, got it from this list quite awhile back, I can't remember
who posted it. I run mp3_check first, then mp32wav, then normalize -m then
I run Tom Brinkmans bacd (thanks Tom) alias file. Works great and all on
the CLI.

#!/bin/bash
# mp32wav

mp3file="$*"
mkdir wav

for file in "$@" ; do
#echo "$file"
wavfile=`echo "$file" | sed s/\\.mp3/.wav/`
printf "%-50s %-50s\n" "$file" "--> $wavfile"

# to encode wav-->mp3
#lame -h "$file" "$mp3file"

    # to encode mp3-->wav
mpg123 -b 1 -s "$file" | sox -t raw -r 44100 -s -w -c2 -

Does this link solve your problem? If it does, thank Derek.

http://www.jennings.homelinux.net/audio_cd.html

BTW, it mentions 8.2 but it fixed the problem in my 9.0 so should be
applicable to all versions I'd think.

[newbie] Install Mandrake from HD partition

2004-03-14 Thread Chris
I downloaded Mandrake Community (3 iso files and an asc file) to a blank
partition on a new harddrive. I have windows 2000 on my boot harddrive. How
can I use that to 'build' my linux OS on the other partition instead of
copying the files to CD's using Nero?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but as it is obvious, I am new to this
world of Linux and Open Source.

Guess I'm either too dense to get it or something. So, if I were to create
a dir called "bayes" in my etc/mail/spamassassin for the bayes path and set
the "bayes_file_mode to 666 vice 0777 would this solve the problem? I do
have a lockfile created when I run sa-learn.

So, if ya need to kick me in the head to get me to understand, by all means
do.

[newbie] Spamassassin - Cannot create lockfile

2004-03-07 Thread Chris
While looking through my syslog I found the following entry:

Mar  7 04:20:47 dhcppc0 spamd[24012]: bayes: lock: 24012 cannot create tmp
lockfile /etc/mail/spamassassin/bayes.lock.dhcppc0.24012 for
/etc/mail/spamassassin/bayes.lock: Permission denied

I'm assuming from the line below, I have thousands of these, that SA writes
an entry for each rule it runs against a message?

Mar  7 06:10:43 dhcppc0 spamd[1785]: Subroutine
RM_usd_onllovetodate_uri_test redefined at
/etc/mail/spamassassin/1_myrule.cf, rule RM_usd_onllovetodate, line 8,
 line 35.
Mar  7 06:10:43 dhcppc0 spamd[1785]: Subroutine WLS_URI_7258_uri_test
redefined at
/etc/mail/spamassassin/sa-blacklist.2004022204.withdead.uri.cf, rule
WLS_URI_7258, line 8,  line 35.

And lastly, probably a dumb newbie question, there is no problems caused if
I deleted all the .gzip log files in /var/log is there?

Thanks
Chris

I know that spamc/spamd have been replaced, as I remember from a previous
mail you replied to me:

I was just wondering where the files were placed when upgrading via CPAN.
I've also noticed that my syslog file is huge now with spamassassin
running, its 1.3gb in size. I can see I'm going to have to go into webmin
and change it from weekly to daily for that log.

Forgot to mention thats the first thing I tried. I made a mozhold dir and
moved the .mozilla dir over to it, restarted mozilla and same thing. Just
uninstalled mozilla and galeon, reinstalled mozilla and copied all my saved
profile stuff over, works like a champ. I'm always hesitant about
uninstalling something and reinstalling it, guess I'm afraid it's going to
screw something else up. Thanks Anne for the help

Thanks Anne, no joy here. Now whenever I click on send link/page the thing
just closes down. I found no open files, no zombie processes, nothing. I
even tried moving the .mozilla dir to another place and let mozilla
recreate it. All that did was not even let mozilla start. Since he was

something in there messed things up. Any other suggestions?

[newbie] Can't print/send link/page with Mozilla

2004-02-16 Thread Chris
This just happened out of the blue. Mozilla 1.1 just decided that it won't
let me send any links, or pages, nor will it let me print. This just
happened this evening after my son was looking for some parts for his car
so possibly a page screwed something up. When going into composer I can
enter a to address and subject, but can not enter anything into the text
portion. When trying a page preview or print nothing happens. I'm sure
its an easy fix, but I can't figure it out. I did reboot the system and
that didn't do any good. Any and all assistance as always will be much
appreciated.

[newbie] 'nother spamassassin question

2004-02-16 Thread Chris
I'm getting pretty familiar now with SA, have quite a few rules being used
and its stopping about 99%, but my question is about bayes. Aren't the
bayes scores supposed to be somewhere in the content analysis? I have the
following in my local.cf for bayes, thanks Derek.

# Enable the Bayes system
use_bayes   1
score BAYES_00 0 0 -6.400 -6.400
score BAYES_01 0 0 -6.600 -6.600
score BAYES_10 0 0 -6.400 -5.801
score BAYES_20 0 0 -5.801 -3.101
score BAYES_30 0 0 -1.246 -1.604
score BAYES_60 0 0 2.002 2.002
score BAYES_70 0 0 2.637 2.637
score BAYES_80 0 0 4.1 4.1
score BAYES_90 0 0 4.2 4.2
score BAYES_99 0 0 4.300 4.3

Is that correct?

Being a newbie to spamassassin also, just set it up over the past week using
CPAN to upgrade to the newest version. I've got actually two filters setup

Re: [newbie] PowerPC 5500/225 Mandrake Install?

2004-02-11 Thread Chris Ruzin
I've successfully setup Yellow Dog, Mandrake, Gentoo and Debian on my
Powerbook Pismo, so it's certainly worth trying to put Mandrake on your
old tower. The PPC versions of the distros are a little behind the x86
versions, but they are certainly useable. The only thing that is a
pain in the butt for your computer is it's an Old World machine and
will need BootX to get into Linux. Still, it's worth trying, even for
the learning experience.

If you want to see a list of all the PPC distros that I've heard of, go

Re: [newbie] OT: Port Scan?

2004-02-10 Thread Chris Ruzin
Wow! Thanks for the quick response and great advice. I've changed my
router to drop the packets instead of deny them. Hopefully that will
deter future things like this from occurring.

As an aside, one thing I've also noticed in the last few days with my
network is that my DSL has gone from an average speed of 75k/sec to
150k/sec.  That's T1 speed just about, isn't it?  I haven't upgraded my
subscription or anything, so I have no clue why it's happening. I
really like it though!

Thanks again for your help.

You read it like this: for example the first line is telling you that
a machine with ip address 66... is trying to connect to your machine

default behavior of denying the connection.

The log file shows several ICMP packets, typically used for ping.
They also show TCP connection to port 6346 and 8980. From google, the
first one is used by peer to peer file sharing programs (bearshare,
gnutella), the other one I couldn't find.

Yes, it could be a port scan, but I wouldn't worry about it as long as
you have your firewall, although a better policy would be to DROP the
packets instead of DENY the connection. Deny means that the firewall
does not allow the other peer to connect to your machine, typically
sending back a NACK packet or similar. Drop means that the firewall
just ignores the packet, and does not send back any acknowledge
(positive or negative). The latter is better since it does not let the
other peer know that you even exist.

There should also be a way to avoid logging these attempts (there _is_
in linux's firewall, iptables) if they are clogging your log file, but
I cannot help with your specific router.

[newbie] OT: Port Scan?

2004-02-10 Thread Chris Ruzin
I've got a D-Link DI-604 router for my small home network. I have it
automatically send me the log file when it reaches a certain size. In
the last few days, I've been getting a copy of a the log file several
times a day. And it's always the same thing:

Feb/09/2004 22:06:32
 Drop TCP packet from WAN src:66.65.215.6:62986 dst:162.40.161.66:8980

Feb/09/2004 22:06:31
 Drop ICMP packet from WAN src:216.176.95.198:3 dst:162.40.161.66:1

dst:162.40.161.66:6346 Rule: Default deny

Of course, the log file is MUCH bigger, but the vast majority of
entries are like this. Is this a port scan of somekind? I don't know
how to read firewall log files like this. Can anyone shed some light
on this for me?

Thanks,
Chris

[newbie] Upgrading Spamassassin

2004-01-23 Thread Chris
Ok, here comes probably a really dumb question. I'm running MDK 9.0 with SA
2.41. I'd like to upgrade to at least SA 2.55 however I also don't want to
fsck up my system. SA 2.55 says it requires the following:

* rpm-helper
* perl-Mail-SpamAssassin
* /bin/sh
* /bin/sh
* bash
* perl-base
* libc.so.6
* libcrypto.so.0.9.7
* libdl.so.2
* libssl.so.0.9.7

If I were to seperately install/upgrade these would they mess up my present
9.0 system?

Brian, question on running spamassassin. There are two files to run spamc

[newbie] urpmi/rpm error

2004-01-12 Thread Portal Chris
Hi All,

I tried searching the archives for something relevant but didn't come up
with anything useful.

Trying to update the kernel with a recently obtained RPM, I get the
following messages:

# urpmi kernel
rpmdb: /var/lib/rpm/Packages: unsupported hash version: 8
Can't call method "traverse_tag" on an undefined value at
/usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.0/i386-linux-thread-multi/URPM/Resolve.pm
line 204.

I presume this has something to do with the version of RPM that I'm running:
4.0.4 under Mandrake 9.0

I'd update RPM, but get similar messages about unsupported hash version
there too.

If there's a tarball I could grab, I'd be willing try that.

Suggestions?

Chris P

[newbie] windows networking

2003-12-03 Thread Chris Savchick
I have Mandrake Linux 9.2 up and running on a PC I hope to use as a file
server. I have two additional PCs running Windows 98SE in a peer-to-peer
network configuration. One of them also supplies an ADSL connection to all
PCs in my network (I used to have 3 running 98). The ADSL PC runs WinRoute
Lite, acting as a DHCP server, to accomplish the internet sharing.
(Ultimately, I'd like the Linux PC to do that and act as a firewall as well,
but one thing at a time here!)

I am having a hard time getting my Linux PC on my windows network, to say
nothing of getting it internet access. In the LAN configuration screen, I
set my NIC to DHCP and click "Activate," but I get nothing. I must be
missing something... any ideas? Is there a good tutorial available somewhere
that tells me how to accomplish this? Any common problems I need to be
aware of? Linux is completely foreign to me!!!

Thanks,
Chris

[newbie] OT? Critical Flan in GnuPG

2003-11-28 Thread Chris
Thought I'd pass this along. Not sure if it applies to anyone.

- Critical flaw in GnuPG -
 Oxygen3 24h-365d, by Panda Software (http://www.pandasoftware.com)

Madrid, November 28, 2003 - A critical security flaw has been found in the
GnuPG encryption software which could compromise a user's private key in
seconds.

This flaw affects versions 1.0.2 and later of GnuPG which use ElGamal keys
for encryption and signing (type 20). ElGamal keys used for encryption only
(type 16) are not affected by this flaw.

Although use of sign+encrypt keys is not considered good cryptographic
practice, the OpenPGP standard allows them to be used and GnuPG supports
creation and handling of them. Fortunately, these keys are not used very
often nor are they created by default in GnuPG, since -compared to RSA or
DSA keys - they have significant disadvantages with regard to security and
performance. Actually, users must create ElGamal sign+encrypt keys through
specific options in GnuPG.

To avoid being affected by this vulnerability, it is advisable not to
generate ElGamal keys for encryption and signing (type 20), revoke the keys
that are already in use and take into account that all the material signed
and encrypted with them could have been compromised. GnuPG has already
announced that future versions of the program will not allow these keys to
be created.

Hello,I know that this is probably a dumb question, but here goes.

I've found that i rather like Xscreensaver, and it would be nice if it were to start with kde, so that i did not need to start it myself everytime the computer started. I know that i could add it to /etc/services, but if the program requires X to have already started, will that actually do anything useful?

My question: is there a way to start programs with kde automatically?

[newbie] OT-Kind of - Attempt to insert backdoor into Linux kernal

2003-11-12 Thread Chris
Although this is not Mandrake related, I feel its worth posting the link to
the story. This was posted in the Risks Digest:

On 5 Nov 2003, an attempt to insert a very cleverly crafted backdoor into

hacks a source code examiner must be waiting to catch if we want genuinely
secure voting systems under the current model of proprietary DRE systems
with a closed-door source code examination.

Someone broke into a server at kernel.kbits.net and inserted the following
code into the Linux kernel:

if ((options == (__WCLONE|__WALL)) && (current->uid = 0))

retval = -EINVAL;
For the complete story of this attack on Linux, including the actual E-mail
exchange documenting the discovery of the attack, see:

[newbie] Why so many reboots ?

2003-10-01 Thread Chris Blake
Greetings,

Just an OT question since I been using MDK for the last 9 months and am
frustrated that I still have to install Windows for my clients.

Why does Linux install everything in one go, with minimal input required
by user, and windows reboots every .5 seconds whenever something is
detected.

As an example, I am currently installing Win2K and Win98 on 7 machines,
first you install the OS that requires around 10 reboots, then once you
done that you then have to install motherboard drivers and things which
requires another million reboots before you can actually say
"Well, now its over, I can actually use the fscking thing now "

Why ?

To readd your cd sources do:

Put CD1 in the drive and in root terminal type:
urpmi.addmedia --distrib cdrom removable://mnt/cdrom

So Stephen, you're telling me that the new GTO which is based on a Holden

Oh, I'm not worried about defragging, I got rid of that problem a long time
ago :) I just really wanted to make sure that 'shredding' a file(s) would
not somehow or another mess the system up and not somehow take away
available space. Thanks to all who answered this simple sounding question.

So there is probably nothing to worry about however its much better to run

[newbie] firestarter and open ports

2003-08-14 Thread Chris
I'm sure I've asked this before and don't believe I got an answer. Heres my
situation. I'm running firestarter, V0.9.0. When going to grc.com to scan
my ports it shows 21,23, and 80 open. Now I've gone to mcc > sytem >
services and shutdown all the servers I can see that are running. Another
scan still shows the same ports open. The rest of the ports are closed, not
stealthed as one would assume them to be. Out of 1056 ports scanned two, 0
and 520 were stealth, the rest were closed. Any assistance would be
appreciated.

Ok, went to sygatetech.com and ran the first scan, here are the results, my ip
address is correct, but then there is this:

Web Server Found = Server: ZyXEL-RomPager/3.02
Telnet Open = Password:
FTP Server Open = 220 Sprint FTP version 1.0 ready at Sat Mar 4 14:54:52 2000

Ports 21, 23, and 80 show open, rest show closed. What now?

That seems correct. From what I can gleem from my boards TM (its a
1stMainboard AZ11E) its comprised of a VIA VT8363 system controller for the
North Bridge and a VIA 686B (Super South). So, from what I can figure this is
the temp for this chipset.

Thanks for all who responded.

Very interesting Tom. Question though, if I run $ w I get:
