Re: [newbie] OT - Request for advice on Windows XP

2004-08-25 Thread Dale Kosan
Service pack 2 is garbage, I have seen numerous issues after installing
it on clients machines. Wireless networks stop working, machines that
just keep shutting down and restarting. Here are some solutions for
you:

Adaware, Spybot, cws shredder and hijack this for spyware and such.
Clamwin for virus protection.0
ZoneAlarm or cheap router for firewall.
Here is how you remove as much spyware as possible:
1. install and update adaware, spybot and clamwin, turn off system
restore and reboot into safemode, after unplugging network adapter.

2. delete all temp files and temporary internet files and cookies. this
must be done for all users who have a login on the computer.

3. run adaware, spybot and cws shredder. run clamwin. do this for each
account.

4. go to trendmicros free online scan and let it remove or fix anything
that is found.

After all this crap you should be good to go! Contact off list if you
need more help.

The first thing I did was to install Mozilla, OpenOffice and some

Hi, Kaj. Good to hear from you. The thing is that if you applied XP
update patches online *before* you installed Zonealarm, that is not
good.
Because of the weaknesses in XP it is possible for XP to get infected
just by sitting on the network. M$ messenger has a security hole that
allows trojans to get in unless it is updated or killed.

Zonealarm is the best as far as I am concerned, I think you made a good
decision there.
Suddenly, when she tries to send an e-mail (from within Mozilla, of
course, I'm not THAT stupid), up pops a message from our ISP saying
that the box is compromized, accordingly the smtp-server won't
accept the mail. In fact, her IP was blacklisted.
Some on-line security scans, revealed no less than 159 trojans,
worms and viruses !
This seems like an unholy lot IF you didn't perform online updates. If
you did then maybe not. What I'm thinking is that it's possible it
might
have arrived with the infestation. Depends on how much work you did
online before you installed the firewall.

Usually infestations occur when the user installs XP while online
and/or
peforms online service updates. (NOT a good idea) However your machine
came with XP preinstalled, so

After heavy googling around, I purchased a spyware/trojan scanner
called XoftSpy, which cleaned most of the shit. But nevertheless, a
spyware trojan keeps coming in (SAHAgent). No matter what I do.
(The bugger doesn't show up in ControlPanel -- Remove software).
I had a friend yesterday purchase one of these before I could stop him.
There is a spyware scanner called Ad-aware that is free and will do an
excellent job of cleaning your box --
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Well, I know next to nothing about Windows, but before I subscribe
to a windows-list (which I would hate, really), I would like to ask
if you can recommend :
1. A good, reliable firewall for Windows (preferably OSS and free) ?
Zonealarm is good
2. A spyware/trojan/worm cleaner capable of removing all malware ?
Ad-aware has won numerous awards and doesn't cost you a dime for the
standard version. I think it's the best
3. Shutting down the whole kaboodle and wait for SP2 ?
When you do updates, the only thing I can recommend is what I do for
customers. Generally I download the network version of sp1a service
pack
so that the XP box does not do any updating over the web.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/network.mspx
After that, don't do any more updating. SP2 will hose your box. I
did
try a suggestion by Bryan Phinney that is out there on the web for free
called Autopatcher, but so far I haven't been able to get an
Autopatcher
installation in place that's not hosed. That may be because of the
particular release of XP I happen to have, I don't know. I look
forward
to when either I or they can get it working because Autopatcher is a
good
idea.

Anyways, my personal advice is to use the standard sp1a service pack
and
then stop right there. You should also go to sourceforge and download
the virus scanner darling of the Linux world --

http://sourceforge.net/projects/clamwin/
ClamAV. IMO this scanner is better than Symantec's scanner, without
the
bloat.  It's lightweight, fast, does one thing and does it well;
exactly
what a virus scanner should be. Linux Journal just gave it an Editor's
Choice award.

Don't be confused, this is a native Linux project that's been
cross-compiled for the win32 world. So yes you will see a larger Linux
project

2004-02-15 Thread Dale Kosan
Okay, here is what I did:

Downloaded all of the rpms from your sight, put them all in a kde32
folder.

Added that folder to my urpmi.cfg with urpmi.addmedia KDE32
file://home/dale/kde32/ with hdlist.cz, that went fine.

Went into the graphical software install program, I was in Gnome when I
did this, and the the kde32 entry was there, selected everything and
tons of dependency conflicts appeared...

Do not know what I am doing wrong...

OK, let's do this by the numbers.

1) Download the KDE32 rpms to your PC before i have to shut the FTP

2) Make a note of where you saved the KDE32 directory and let me know
where you have placed it.

3) We'll move ahead after you get back to me.

No. I think the problem is the nic is not initialized. He said he was
seeing initizing of eth0 failed error...

John McQuillen wrote:
Hi Greg,

If interested,

here is what is in the modems internal software:
PPP (VPI 8, VCI 35) ipa
ipa	150.101.208.30 255.255.0.0
eth0	10.0.0.138 255.0.0.0
loop	127.0.0.1 255.0.0.0
auto DHCP
domain name :lan
hostname: user 10.0.0.1

Okay, we have an external address (150.101.208.30) and an Internal
address (10.0.0.138). Do you have 10.0.0.138 as your default gateway on
the Mandrake box? In /etc/sysconfig/network you should have
'GATEWAY=10.0.0.138' and 'GATEWAYDEV=eth0'

When installing Mandrake, I have selected (when setting up net/internet)
the ethernet option, and selected bootp/dhcp instead of entering any
details. This is how Red Hat is configured (ethernet connection/dhcp)
and works no probs. After this, booting into MK9, internet does not
work. When it is booting, the detection of eth0 fails. Running
ifconfig in MK9, shows up only the lo details, and eth0 is not
running.

Is your RedHat 8 installation running its own DHCP server?
Do you have any messages in '/var/log/messages|grep -i dhcp' on the
Mandrake box?

As a result, obviously no connection. Does not matter how

many different ways I configure the connection through the wizard, it
still does not work, even when I select ADSL, and choose DHCP.
If I run ifup eth0, it fails. When I run 'ifconfig eth0 -pointopoint
10.0.0.1 netmask 255.0.0.0', it brings eth0 up, but still does no good,
and when I run the internet wizard, if knocks eth0 out, and puts it down
again.

M, the way I read the -pointopoint keyword in the docs for
ifconfig, what you are doing here is attempting to set the address for
the other end of the link. Now, I haven't been following this thread
until now, so I'm not sure if you've been told specifically to use
-pointopoint, but I don't think that this is doing what you want...

When I bring up ifconfig in RH8, these are the addresses that come up:
eth0
inet addr :10.0.0.1 Bcast 10.255.255.255 Mask 255.0.0.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
lo
inet addr : 127.0.0.1 Mask 255.0.0.0

To me that suggests that RH is using 10.0.0.1 as gateway. If I'm wrong,
please someone correct me.

Here, RH is 10.0.0.1, the gateway should be the internal address of the
router, which is 10.0.0.138.

Please note with the above, that when running ifconfig eth0 -pointopoint
10.0.0.1 netmask 255.0.0.0 in mandrake, the 'UP BROADCAST RUNNING'
section has a word 'NOTRAILERS' in it. Does this have a critical part
to play?? This is one difference between the RH8 and MK9 ifconfig
display.

Google tells me that NOTRAILERS means that the interface doesn't support
trailer encapsulation. Don't ask me what that means :) I don't think it
is important here, however.

Anne,
as far as I know, the eth0's address is automatically assigned? (dhcp)
and being the only device on the network in redhat, it gets an address
of 10.0.0.1. The router/modems address is 10.0.0.138. I use this
address (when eth0 is working) in my browser to get into the
configuration of the router. This brings up the routers menu (which is
web site design based) to configure everything.

Forgive me from snipping from here to the end, but I think that the main
problem here is DHCP. Your router needs to get its external address by
DHCP from your ISP, but if it is also serving DHCP to the lan, you could
have a conflict if you are also serving DHCP in Mandrake. This may not
be the case, however, but I would try the following:

Turn off dhcpd in Mandrake and let your nic get an IP address from the
DHCP server in the router, if it has one...

Otherwise, set a static IP on your nic of 10.0.0.1 and make sure that
your gateway is set to 10.0.0.138 and dev eth0.

I hope this helps,

Kind regards,

John...

Re: [newbie] Write to windows partition?

2002-12-08 Thread Dale Kosan
Well, he states he can read the files so it is not NTFS. Root should be
able to read and write, to do this as a user you need to edit the
/etc/fstab entry. Can not help with that because I do not have Windows
on my machine.

man mount for details.

The option, from memory, is umask=0.
Or you could use user=nnn,umask=002 if you are the only one going to write
to it.
Or mess about with group ownership and permissions if you want more
complicated control of access.

Assuming you're accessing everything Windows via /mnt/win_c - you
can't edit ANYTHING at all? What version of Windows were you running?
Because if you were running anything NT based with NTFS, you're not
going to be able to - but if you're running under FAT or VFAT, you can
edit/save/modify anything - just that the executable bit is set on all
files...but that's generally not a hassle...

I am not sure on this but kernel 2.2.17 does not recognize ATA 100
controllers. You'll have to use a 2.4 kernel to get support for that.

On Monday 20 November 2000 08:49, you wrote:

  M/B: ASUS A7V/KT133
Issue: Linux Mandrake Doesn't Undertand the Promise ATA/100 on the
  M/B

  Here's the procedure I used:

  * NOTE: This procedure ASSUMES that you attach the disk to the
  primary UATA/100 device

  1) Disconnect the UATA/100 Win2K disk
  2) Attach the new disk to the IDE controller
{NOT the UATA 100 controller - there are 2 sets of disk
  controller ports on the M/B)
  3) Drop the Mandrake 7.2 CD into the CD/R drive.
  4) Boot the system from CD
  5) Do a bare bones install of Mandrake {don't even bother with X)
  6) After the install is done, log in as root
  7) Execute the following command: % cat /proc/pci
  8) Somewhere in there, you will get a piece of output that has 5 hex
addresses listed. These should be the I/O range for the UATA/100
controller. In my case the first two were 0x9000 and 0x8800.
  9) Record those numbers.
  10) Shut down
  11) Disconnect the drive from the IDE controller and hook it to the
  UATA controller.
  12) Reconfigure the BIOS to boot from CD first rather than HDD.
  13) Boot the box up - when the first Mandrake screen comes up, press
'F1' to get into the alternate boot screen.
  14) At the command prompt provided, type in 'linux
ide2=0xy,0xz' computing y and z as: high start address from
step 8, and z as the second start address + 2. On my box this turned
out to be ide2=0x9000,0x8802. 15) At this point, everything should
be happy, and you can go ahead with a full install.
  16) When you get to configuring GRUB, use the same numbers you used
  in step 14.

I haven't yet tried patching the kernel - that's next. But this was
  enough to get moving forward.

 Hi

If I do what you say I get an error message on boot up, and also if I try
to
mount it by icon that says, "/mnt/floppy is not a block device". But if I
mount it through a terminal window it mounts?

I am attempting to install LM 7.2 on a "clean" system {e.g. raw,
unformatted
disk} and seem to be encountering a nasty little problem related to the
Promise Ultra ATA 100 controller on my system.

 System:

 M/B: ASUS A7V KT133 w/Promise UATA 100 controller
 CPU: 900 Mhz Athlon
 Memory: 256Mb

 Disk 20Gb Quantum (I think?)

I know when I installed Win2K on a separate disk, I had to provide W2K
with a
disk containing new drivers to that the W2K install could talk to the
Promise
 Ultra ATA 100 controller.

Having searched through newsgroups and the Mandrake site, I have found
several
other people claiming to have made this work, but no-one has ever clearly
 documented the procedure they used.

If you have actually succeeded in installing LM 7.2 on an ASUS A7V using
the
Ultra ATA 100 disk controller, could you please let me know what the
procedure
 was you used?

 Thx,

 Glenn

I have heard those do not work with Linux, I could be wrong.I know SUSE told
me in a e-mail I sent them that it does not, I would guess if SUSE does not
support it.GOOD LUCK ! Does the 2.4 kernel support it I wonder?

A quick look shows cheapbytes charges 6.99 for MDK 7.1 2 CD set, the $1.99
price is for MDK 7.0 single CD. Matt includes shipping in his price,
cheapbytes charges $5.00. If I hadn't already downloaded and burned my own
CD-R's I'd probably get a set from Matt as other online vendors look like
they charge even more than cheapbytes.

Micheal
Is this an OEM product or did you buy it retail. The reason I ask is
that
the only CD-RW drive listed at Panosonics Web is a PCMCIA drive. All their
other recordable drives are DVD-RAM. There is no listing at all for 7585
drive but they do list a 24 speed CR-585 CD-ROM drive. This could be why
neither Linux or Windows
recognizes it as a CD-RW because it is not.

Re: [newbie] Installing licq or kxicq

2000-02-03 Thread dale kosan

I am not sure what you might be doing wrong, but I have an easier way to go
about this. Both programs are in the folder RPMS on your Mandrake cd.Use the
package manager to install untill you get more comy with the tar gz
format. All the files you need are on the cd.Also check out www.rpmfind.net
for more easy to install packages.I would use Kpackage to install the
programs.

Hey, I am new to this list, and I have a few installation questions some of
you
might be able to help me with. I just installed Mandrake7, and I am trying
to
install kxicq or licq. I unarchived the licq files and when I do a
./configure
I get the following:

configure: error: You need to have the libstdc++ headers installed

So I downloaded the libstdc++ libraries but got an error when compiling
those
as well (I can include that if needed).

Now when installing kxicq it runs the ./configure fine but when I do a
make, I
get the following:

../../kxicq/kconfigdlg/kconfigitem.h:34: iostream.h: No such file or
directory
make[3]: *** [kxrc.lo] Error 1
make[3]: Leaving directory `/root/kxicq-01112000/plugins/russianConverter'
make[2]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/root/kxicq-01112000/plugins'
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/kxicq-01112000'
make: *** [all-recursive-am] Error 2

Anyone know what the problem is? Am I doing something wrong in compiling
them
(since I am relatively new to linux)? Thanks for the help in advance.

Britt
