[newbie] Just wondering a few points!

2001-05-29 Thread Derek Rayne

Hi there,

I am wondering a few things...

SUBJECT #1: E-MAIL

Can any of the e-mail programs (like K-Mail, Evolution, etc...) that
are on here be configured to read and send messages via Yahoo e-mail
(the free one)? I don't want to keep on using Netscape to load up the
Yahoo e-mail page to read my e-mail, I want to be able to browse the
web while going back and forth reading my e-mail. I know I can open up
another window, but that takes up time and puts lag onto Netscape.

SUBJECT #2: Real Player 8

I recently purchased the Desktop Edition of LM 8.0 which only has 3
CD's in it. I figured I might as well update my real player to version
8 also. I went on to their website, put in the necessary information
and downloaded the file. I then I did the RPM package, appropiately,
it asks for CD #4 which wasn't included with my setup because of it
being the Desktop edition. If I downloaded it, why would it ask for
the CD? I would understand if when I was installing it, it was on CD
#4,but with the desktop edition it was 3 CD's not 4. I think it was
the professional edition or something like that had the 4th - 7th CDs
because it came with more.

SUBJECT #3: USB Scanner

I recently did what a lot of people suggesting for my USB scanner. I
still can't get it to work. I downloaded the newest version of SANE,
it said it was already installed. I had this when I booted up the
system: NOTE, spaces are NOT accurate.

Loading USB interface [OK]
Mount USB filesystem [OK]
Starting USB daemon[OK]

So I know it knows about my USB, does that usually goto IRQ 11? If
that is the case, I think i know the problem, but my soundcard which
does use IRQ 11 works perfectly fine. Should I put my sound card in
another PCI slot then try this again?

I do appeciate all the help I got in the past and the future...I love
Linux much better than Windows, even though I don't have as much
software as I would like to have.

Thanks

[newbie] USB Scanner w/LM 8.0

2001-05-26 Thread Derek Rayne

Hi there,

I recently upgraded my Linux system to Mandrake 8.0 and boy it works
like a charm. I went on the web site called www.linux-usb.org and it
mentioned that my scanner (UMAS Astra 1220U) was supported with a
certain version of Kernel. Well, I have that version, but how do I
configure my system to recognize that there is a scanner on my USB
port? The site wasn't really helpful, at least it didn't speak in
English where I could understand it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...I am regoing to the web site,
maybe it has it clearer (or my head will be) where I can get it. I
will post that I got it if that is the case.

Please send me the message as a private message. Thanks!

[newbie] New Kernel

2001-05-21 Thread Derek Rayne

Hi there,

I was wondering, since I bought the 7.2 Desktop Edition and if I
decided to do an upgrade of my Kernel by downloading a new version,
will it screw up my other files and configurations with my sound, KDE
Desktop, and other stuff?

Also, I was thinking of getting 8.0 from the website (purchasing the
CDs from Mandrake) and can I do a Live Update to upgrade my Linux from
7.2 to 8.0?

I can do either...I have currently 2.2.17-21mdk, and if I goto 2.2.19
or higher that is what I am wondering about.

I don't know about a terminal command, but to do it in the KDE Desktop
you do the following:

CLick the K (or right click on the screen)

Then click CONNFIGURATIONS
Then click KDE (not KDE SETUP)
Then Click LOOKNFEEL
Then Click SCREENSAVER

[newbie] USB Scanner

2001-05-17 Thread Derek Rayne

Hi there,

I went recently onto the website called www.linux-usb.org in which it
tells the devices that are currently supported by Linux that happen to
have USB ports.

To my delight, my scanner was listed (UMAX Astra 1220U), however it
said that I needed kernel version 2.2.19 to operate it. It said I
didn't need any drivers for it.

I purchased LM 7.2 from the store and it has on there (according to my
information) 2.2.17-21mdk version of the kernel. Would that work or do
I have to get 2.2.19 or higher to operate it? If I have to get the
other version of the kernel and I complile it, do I lose everything
that I had here before? I don't want to lose my settings for the
soundcard, video and everything else. Also, if I do have to get the
new version of the kernel and it won't effect the outcome of my system,
can you please tell me how to compile it?

Thank-you very much!

[newbie] Scanner

2001-05-14 Thread Derek Rayne

Hi there again...

I am having problems with my Scanner on LM 7.2, again here are some of
the specs (done correctly this time)

Pentium 133mhz
  80mb RAM
  10gb hard drive (IDE)
   8gb hard drive (IDE)
  24X CD ROM drive (IDE)
4X4X32 CDRW drive (IDE)
 100mb Zipdrive (SCSI)

Everything else works great, but the scanner. Here is the specs on the
scanner:

Brand: Mustek
Model: MFS-6000CX
Type: SCSI

I first had it hooked up after my zipdrive. Someone suggested to try
hooking it up by itself without the zipdrive. Well I did and here is
what I get when I do a profile of SCSI devices on my system

(spaces are not done correctly)s

Attached devices:
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 01 Lun: 00
Vendor: Model: ' Rev: L7
Type: Sequential AccessANSI-SCSI revision: ff

That's just for the scanner, I am not putting the one for the CDROM
drive.

The Id number is correct that is the number it is set for on the
scanner.

This scanner IS listed on the supported hardware for LM 7.2 according
to their website, plus the scanner works fine on my Macintosh.

If this scanner won't work, can I use a USB scanner???

[newbie] Scanner not working...

2001-05-12 Thread Derek Rayne

Hi there,

I have a Mustek MFS-6000CX SCSI scanner hooked up on my LM 7.2 system
which has the following hardware:

   Pentium 133mhz processor
   80mb RAM
about a 10mb hard drive (IDE)
about a 8mb hard drive (IDE)
   24X CDRom
   4X4X32 CDRW drive
   Adaptek SCSI controller
   IOmega SCSI Zip 100
   HP 610CL Deskjet Printer
   Sony SVGA monitor
   I/O Magic Video card (8mb)

Well, everything works except the Scanner. It is hooked sequentially
after the Zip Drive using a 25pin/25pin (as it is referred to as a Mac
SCSI cable) to the computer and then another one going to the scanner,
where there is a 50pin centronics termination on the device as that I
am using the 25pin connection from my Zip drive.

All I get when I do a SCSI check is the following:

Host: scsi0 Channel:00 Id:01 Lun:00
 Vendor:Model: 'Rev: L7
Type: Sequential-Access ANSI SCSI revision: ff
Host: scsi0 Channel:00 Id:05 Lun 00
 Vendor: IOMEGA Model: ZIP100Rev: J.02
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Host: scsi0 Channel:00 Id:00 Lun 00
 Vendor: ATAPIModel: CD-R/RW 4X4X32 Rev:3.ER
Type: CDROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02

As I said before, everything works great except the scanner...According
the Linux-Mandrake website, my scanner is one of those supported by my
system. Also, I know the cable works because I tried putting the cable
from the computer to the Zip Drive and it works just fine.

Can anyone help me? BTW...I dont care if it only can scan at 300dpi
but I would love to scan some photos into my system without using my
sisters Windows system. Also, I do know the scanner works as that I
used it on a Macintosh before.

Thanks in adavance.

[newbie] Sound card problem AND Netscape

2001-03-22 Thread Derek Rayne

Hi there,

I am having problems with my soundcard. I currently have a PCI
Soundblaster 128 sound card. According to the manufacture (and others)
that it will work with Linux Mandrake 7.0. I did run the program (in
super user mode) called sndconfig and it does it's check and it says it
is (in a box)

Model: Ensonic|unknown
  device 1274: 5880

Then on the next screen it says it is NOT supported. I then did a
#sndconfig --noprobe

I then select Ensonic AudioPCI (Soundblaster 64/128 PCI) then I get
this error message:

The following error occured
running the modprobe program:

/lib/modules/2.2.14-mdklinux
/misc/es1370.o: init_module:
Device or resource busy

Then when I restart my system it gives me the same error message with
[FAILED] in nice red letters.

Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do? If it means getting
another sound card, I will accept that option, but as a LAST RESORT.
---
Another problem: Recently I tried to run Netscape through and it won't
load up any pages. This only happens during when I am under my name of
richard for my login, right now I am typing this message in Netscape
using the root directory login and I have no problem. I can always
create a new login name and delete the old one if that is all I have to
do, no biggie.
---
Oh yeah, one more problem is that my scanner is recognized by Linux
(SCSI) but it doesn't know what it is. It comes up with garbage for
the type, it is plugged in AFTER my zipdrive. My zipdrive I have no
problems with what so ever. It says my zipdrive is direct access while
the scanner as sequential access.
--
Thanks for any and all help with these three problems, I would greatly
appreciate any help.

NOTE: FOr the soundcard, I did a complete re-install on my system
(including formatting the drive.

[newbie] Sound cards with Linux

2001-03-18 Thread Derek Rayne

Hi there,

I would like some help with soundcards and Linux. Here's what I did...

logged in under root
typed in sndconfig
it recognized a sound card saying Equinox and some numbers
it then said it wasn't recognized by Linux and then quit

I did this
typed in sndconfig --nodected (or something like that, can't remember
it was a few days ago)
looked for my sound card, which is the SoundBlaster 128 (PCI).
It was listed, I selected it, it said gave me some selections and it
did NOT work.

Does Linux support a ISA sound card...I am thinking of getting the
SoundBlaster 64 ISA card to save a PCI slot for a network card I am
getting. I know they make a SoundBlaster 64 PCI. Will it work with an
ISA card?

[newbie] Scanner Access

Hi there,

I am wondering about using a scanner with Linux. I am using LM 7.0 and
someone told me to use the utility called SANE. First off, it is on my

scanner is one listed in the official list by LM. The ID number is set
as 1, my system recognizes something at ID #1, but it doesn't say what
it is. This is what it says.

Host: scsi 0 Channel: 00 Id:01 Lun: 00
  Vendor: Model: $

Then it lists my Zipdrive and my CDRW with no problems...

Do I have to do something to my setup for it to know it is a scanner?

[newbie] Now what?

Hi there again...I am back with more questions about Linux.

First off, I am glad this group is here for people who are like me and

I finally got my GUI to work, even though it isn't X Windows, it is

REASONS: I use the kPPP program and I connect to T-Three using the PAP
type of connection. T-Three does NOT use a HTTP or FTP proxy so I left
those spots blank. The way T-Three operates is that it has username
and password, and then connect. It doesn't need any scripts to my
knowledge. I connect with NO PROBLEM, it is just running the programs.

2) How do I have it recognize my zip drive on parallel port number 2
(LPT2 for DOS/Windows people)?

REASONS: I tried the following command: modprobe ppa AND modprobe imm
and neither one load the module. This was done in # mode, plus I even
tried mount /dev/sd[x]4 -t vfat /mnt/disk with no results. Both say
there is no device hooked up.

3) How do I have it recognize my CDRW drive?

REASONS: I have my first CDROM drive (read only) recognized with no
problem what so ever. So when I installed StarOffice 5.1 it worked
great. Now I would like to be able to create MP3's, create my own CD's
(from my own CD collection) and create CD's for my own backup purposes.

4) Is there any Scanner software out there that will work?

REASON: I have a parallel port SCANNER that I would also like to use.

Thanks again EVERYONE!

[newbie] Forgot to ask...

2001-03-07 Thread Derek Rayne

Hi there,

I forgot to ask this the last time I was posting a question...

1) How do I make my ALS200 sound card work with Linux in the KDE
Desktop?

REASON: I want to play .wav's, my CD's, and hear any other sounds that
are there.

[newbie] A few more questions...plus a big THANKS!

2001-02-28 Thread Derek Rayne

I am having problems again with my Linux system. Here is the basics
about it...

Linux Mandrake 7.0 is the version
Pentium 133Mhz system
80mb of RAM
Permedia 3000 video card (4mb)
Sony 100SX monitor (SVGA)
10.2gb hard drive for Linux ONLY
Zoltrix external 33.6kbps modem
Zip 100 External Drive (Parallel)
HP610CL Deskjet printer

Now the problems...

Xwindows will NOT install properly due to the screen always going blank
when I select the options given to me while having the # prompt, I
typed in Xconfigurator and a program comes up where I can select, but
then after selecting it goes blank on me, with the only recourse to
reboot my entire system.

Now, I am trying to set up my system to be able to call, using the
modem, to my internet provider (T-Three) and I don't know how to set
this up. I went into the # prompt, and typed in userconf and it came
up with menu selections, but I don't know how to do any of this.

NOTE: I do NOT have any instructions as that someone just gave me the
CD ROMs and the install boot floppy.

If anyone can help me, it would be greatly appreciated!

[newbie] I am really such a beginner...

2001-02-27 Thread Derek Rayne

Hi there,

I am what they call definatly a newbie when it comes to Linux. I had
obtained the three CD set of Mandrake-Linux version 7.0 with an
autoboot install floppy disk. This came with NO instructions, just the
CDs and the disk.

I am having a few questions, so please help me out...

1) I want to do a dialup to the internet using my T-Three account, how
can I set this up?

REASON: I thought when I was installing it, it asked me for a
connection, and I typed in the information of T-Three, the phone
number, username, and password that would allow me to connect. If that
was the case and I did it right, how do I get there so I can do the
dialup?

2) How do I install XWindows without opening up my machine?

REASON: I tried doing the XWindows installation that the CDROM prompted
me for, but for no matter what I selected the screen would go blank and
that would be the end of it. I selected the exact monitor I had and it
still did this.

NOTE: I have a Sony 100SX monitor and I do know (my dad told me) that
the video card has 4mb of RAM.

3) How do I change my configurations?

REASON: For some reason it says when I login under my name that I don't
have the privledges to do such.

4) How do I install StarOffice?

REASON: It is on the third CD, and I know how to get to read the disk
in the /mnt then the /cdrom directory. I then do an ls and it shows me
the files on the cd. However it is an RPM file and the RPM --help
doesn't help me much at all. I think it is trying to write to the CD
and not my root directory.

-

I do appreciate any help that anyone can get me. I can only now access
the net using the computers at school and my sisters one, which I
prefer not to do...

Here are some specs of the system:

Pentium 133mhz
80mb RAM
10.2gb hard drive
24X CD ROM
4X4X32 CDRW drive
4mb Video card (unsure name)
Sony Monitor
ZIP 100 drive
Zoltrix 33.6kbps external modem
HP610CL Deskjet

If you need any other specs, let me know...as I said, I don't want to
open up my machine if possible.

[newbie] Xwindows configuration

2001-02-27 Thread Derek Rayne

Hi there,

I am still stuck on configuring my Xwindows, I am having very bad
luck, even if I try the standard VGA or SVGA. Could my card be not one
supported?
