A hundred meters is a lot of cable (325 ft), you should not be any problem running

Subject:[newbie] Trashed Linux installation

Saturday I meticulously installed Mandrake 6.0 (from the Cheap*Bytes
CD). I examined each package and decided whether or not I needed it. I
went back and forth through the list in order to come up with an
installation that had everything I needed but nothing I didn't want. It
took three hours. Then, I ran it. Perfect! It was just sooo
awesome--I had it just right.

Guess what... my brother wrecked it. I was playing Iagno and AisleRiot
in some restaurant (while waiting for our car to be fixed), and I
stopped since I knew that battery power was low. I shut down
successfully. Then my brother wanted to play, so I gave him the spare
battery. I told him that he could play for a while but would have to
shut down soon since the battery wouldn't last long. I then went over
to work on the car. When I came back, I found that he had played xkobo
until it died on him.

At home, I tried starting Linux. It came across some nasty-looking
filesystem errors and locked up. I couldn't boot it! I tried
everything I could, but all that was left was a reinstallation. Three
more hours... argh.

My question: What can I do to repair filesystem errors so bad that
booting is impossible?

My turn for sound questions,

I have a PC100 MB with a AMD k6-2. It has an onboard sound chip labeled :

 Sound Pro
 HT1869V+
 HRTF 3D Audio
 EBK43 PCI
 9052

I ran the sound configuration and it came back with as recognizing a CMI-8330 chip.
Regardless of what settings I use the best I get is a very garbled sound check and
when it tries to test the MIDI setup it either complains about the settings or locks
the session. It even went as far as to wipe out my KDE login screen (leaving me with
only KDE and safe mode.)

Documentation is non-existent as the distributor I bought the MB from is now out of

Not so. It doesn't matter whether you're using internal or external
devices; if you're using kernel 2.2.x, you need to use ttyS*, because
the kernel's done away with the cua* devices. If you're using 2.0.x,
you can use cua*, but ttyS* is a better choice, because it leaves the
door open for upgrades.

3. To mount the cdrom, you need to tell it to mount it somewhere. Usually,
people mount it like this:

mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

This will tell it to mount the cdrom into the /mnt/cdrom directory. To
access it, you will need to go to that directory. cd /mnt/cdrom. Then you
can look at it with dir command. If you want to change CDs, you need to
unmount it. Type unmount /mnt/cdrom. Above, the -t is type. Good luck.
Don't know the answer to the other problems.

Ok, is it not a winmodem, and not a pci bus modem, it's isa. When I did the
'setserial /dev/ttyS2' it said irq4, I noticed though, that my modem is on
irq10, is that the problem? How can it be changed?

You may leave it on irq 10. Looking at man setserial gives us an answer. Using

setserial /dev/ttyS2 irq 10

should do it. Then try

setserial /dev/ttyS2

and you should see that it shows irq 10.

Then try kppp again using /dev/ttyS2 as the modem device. If it works, you can add the
line

setserial /dev/ttyS2 irq 10

to /etc/rc.local or create a new file called /etc/rc.serial and put it there so it
runs at startup every time. If you create rc.serial, make certain that the file
permission are the same as rc.local.

An .exe file? Are you SURE it's for Linux? .exe files are generally Windows
executables, which will not run in Linux. Technically you COULD rename a Linux binary
file with an .exe extension... but I've never seen a program distributed for Linux
with that extension.
Anyway, make sure the file is set to be executable (type 'chmod +x filename' if it
isn't), and from the directory it's in type './entire-filename' (without the quotes
of course) to try running it. If that doesn't work, that file is probably meant for
DOS/Windows.
And you shouldn't need pkunzip in Linux anyway. If you've installed Mandrake, you
already have a program called unzip which deals with pkzipped files. And most files
you download for Linux are in tar.gz format, which you use tar and gzip for.

Of course, such things are trivially easy in Linux... Wonder why Microsoft chose such
a half-assed method of drive management...

Meddle not in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.

Bad drive management / bad corporate management, hmm, could there be a connection???

Perhaps I should write a program to screen the obscenities from my email. I thought I
was dealing with a more mature class of professional!

I am in the process of setting up my first linux box and have the opportunity to
select a new graphics adapter. I have an STB Lightspeed 128 available which appears
to give reasonable output with the SVGA server however I am unsure about the
differences between the various servers. Could someone recommend one server over
another (and for that matter a graphics adapter) or do I have a decent combination
already. My principle usage at this time is internet browsing but anticipate the need
for higher quality graphics.

Thank you,

I suppose I was unclear regarding my posting earlier.

I am the only person I know who has ventured into linux and therefor have no way to
compare graphics adapters / monitors. I have the STB Lightspeed 128 adapter installed
and it gives what I would consider reasonable performance for the time being
(considering that I only have the Mandrake KDE environment and no apps. to compare it
with.) I am wondering if anybody has something they would definitely recommend as a
"higher end" graphics adapter (please, keep it under $200.)

Hit the reboot button did we?

Enter your root password and type man fsck at the root prompt . It'll give
you the manual for the fsck command. I believe you'll need to run fsck -r to repair
the disk segments at which point you'll be able to exit the root login (type "logout")
and the computer should shutdown and reboot.
