[newbie] updating postgres without mandrake-specific rpm?

2002-11-27 Thread tek1
hello.

just wondering what steps to take if i want to upgrade to the latest
version of postgresql (using binaries/tar) instead of using a
mandrake-specific rpm (which is not yet available)? any possible pitfalls
to watch out for?

thank you.

Re: [newbie] making rpm installation easier for newbies

2002-11-05 Thread tek1
who should we direct the feedback about rpm and application icons to? the
people who manage rpm or those who manage the windows managers (kde, gnome,
etc.), or the companies who create the distributions (i.e. mandrake)?

i am a consultant and looking to help companies make the switch from
windows to linux, but i know that not knowing *easily* where an application
was installed will stop newbies dead in their tracks...

i wonder if lindows or the new desktop manager that redhat created has this
application icon feature...? still a big supporter of mandrake though! :)

Small touches like this would not cause any problem for the experienced, but

I agree to some extent with you Anne...personally I don't use either Gnome or
KDE anymore but WindowMaker which I really love and like and there you always
need to dock the icon yourself on the desktop and there are no menus like in
KDE and Gnome.

Just some ranting

[newbie] making rpm installation easier for newbies

2002-11-04 Thread tek1
i've been using windows quite a bit, but slowly making the move to linux. :)

lately, i installed opera6 on linux. downloading the rpm and installing it
was easy, but post-installation, i wasn't able to find where the opera
executable was. knowing rpm command line and other commands, it's easy to
find where opera was installed, but for someone completely new to linux, i
think that they would be lost.

one suggestion for improving rpm and other installation programs for linux
is to put a icon on the desktop for the user to easily find. also, somehow
placing the icon somewhere in the kmenu (for kde) or asking the user in
which folder (i.e. applications) a shortcut should be made would make
newbies transition to linux a lot easier.

this installation problem/situation is not limited to opera, but is related
to all gui-based software installed on linux that is to be used in the
point-and-click fashion by end users...

i think that the above would be one of the first problems faced by
individuals and companies making the switch from windows to linux...

anyone know if there are future plans for rpm to include an icon on the
desktop and/or in the desktop environments' (kde/gnome) folders upon
package installation?

thanks.

Re: [newbie] 9.0 rc2 display manager

2002-09-19 Thread tek1

try updating 9.0rc2 to the latest modules, which may resolve your problem,
with these 2 attached scripts. i didn't have your same exact problem, but
md9.0rc2 was going to the shell instead of automatically starting xwindows
upon startup. updating to the latest cooker modules, which the scripts do,
solved the problem.

before updating though, backup your important data, just to be on the safe side.

run the initial script first and only once. after that, run daily
everyday to get the fixes since the previous upgrade.

After installing RC2 on a test machine, I was having all kinds of good luck
with it, until there was a power cutoff while logged into KDE.

After any successive reboot, it starts /etc/init.d/dm and I can see it
loading. It then displays the login panel of kdm (my preferred login
manager). After a few seconds, the screen blanks and drops down to the
C-A-F1 login screen as if init 3 had been issued. C-A-F7 is a blank screen.

I have been into the Mandrake Control Center and made sure that KDE
automatically starts but does not auto-login a user. I even changed it to
not start X upon boot (init 3), saved it, then changed it back to init 5 on
boot and re-saved just to make sure it took.

If I login as any user on the F1 screen and issue a startx, it comes up
just fine.

If I login as root and issue a /etc/init.d/dm restart the display manager
comes up and stays up. Users are able to login use the machine as normal.
When a user logs out, it stays on the kdm login screen as it's supposed to.

However, on reboots, it does the exact thing as described in the 3rd
paragraph.

Here is some pertinent info from /var/log/message towards the end of the
boot process:

kernel: Splash status on console 0 changed to off
echo: 0
rc: Disabling Boot logo succeeded
kdm[957]: Unknown session exit code from manager process
kdm[957]: Rescanning all config files
gpm[798]: info: [mice.c(1751)]:
gpm[798]: imps2: Auto-detected intellimouse PS/2

Before, I was getting errors dealing with problems with mice.c on the boot
process. It is either something blowing up with dm or mice.c from what I
can tell.

Any help or ideas would be great.

i just wanted to give some feedback that upon completing installation of
mandrake9.0rc1 and the system restarting, mandrake does not automatically
start xwindows. it took me to the shell prompt. there, i typed in
startx and was able to get into xwindows, but this may not be obvious to
someone trying linux for the first time.

the 2nd time that i restarted my system, it started xwindows automatically.

not sure why it's doing this on the first startup. anyone else experience
this problem?

people who are switch from windows and have never seen a (shell) prompt
before could be terrified and turned off from linux if they see this their
first time. just a suggestion to make mandrake more user-friendly and the

Note the pathname difference *and* the difference in filenames, drakxconf

right-clicking on the menu-entry, going down to properties, clicking on

Re: [newbie] Configuring Samba

try creating samba users with the same user name and password as those on
your win2k machine using the command:

smbpasswd -a username

the username also needs to be defined in /etc/passwd (in other words,
username has to have a linux system account also)

after typing in the above command, you will then be prompted for the
password for the user. again, make this the same as your win2k user's
password and you should no longer have the problem with win2k asking for a
uname and pw...

Re: [newbie] not enough space on tmp? / archives for this list?

2001-12-10 Thread tek1

hi anuerin!

thanks for the excellent suggestion. will try it!

additional questions abt /tmp

-are the files (that programs place there temporarily) automatically
cleaned up at certain times, or do we need to manually delete the files
there? if the latter, how do we know which we can delete without problem,
as some sometime have a lock on them (which i guess makes them undeletable?)?

-is there a way to reize the /tmp partition, besides a new installation?
like partitionMagic or something?

thanks... :)

At 15:06 01/12/10 -0500, you wrote:

hi,

i also met this during the installation of staroffice. tmp is usually
mounted in the / partition. in my case i just gave / about 100MB and it
was getting used up (the clean tmp at boot option doesnt seem to work).
one work-around is to create another temporary tmp folder for your user
(in your home directory if it has the space to spare) and set the TMP
environment variable to point to that location so every program that the
 user does is placed there.

when the opportunity arises (when you need to reinstall), add more
space to your root partition or create a tmp partition suitable enough
for big installations (a little bit overkill because the work-around
provided above is more efficient since not all installations use up the
 tmp space.)

Re: [newbie] not enough space on tmp?

hi anuerin.

thanks again for your feedback! :)

At 09:32 01/12/11 -0500, you wrote:

hi,

be glad to contribute something ;-).

if you look at the mandrake control center-boot-boot config-Advanced ,
there is a checkbox (sticky push button box? ;-) that should clean tmp at
each boot but for some reason it doesnt work here. it is not recomended to
just delete the locks in tmp as the program using it may still be active.
if you want to do some cleaning just dont delete the hidden locks as a
rule of thumb (i hope you are doing this while out of X since it depends
on the .X0lock file to gain exclusive use of the display :0 or something
like that).

one interesting point that i read in ibm.com was the use of tmpfs as your
/tmp. tmpfs is like a normal filesystem but instead of in the disks, the
files are stored in memory (physical and swap). One drawback is that if
you dont specify the maximum size of the tmpfs you may find yourself
running out of memory and your system will resort to killing the biggest
hog which usually is X. The good thing is that your tmp is really cleaned
upon shutdown as all the files in tmp is on volatile memory. if you issue
a mount command you will find that you already have a tmpfs on your system
(i think this was only applicable to 2.2.x and above kernels) and it is
mounted on /dev/shm. if anybody want to read the whole article, go to the
MUO board and search the tips and tricks section for something like
ibm.com or filesystem.

if you can free some more space (from windows maybe? ;-) then do so with
partition magic (or whatever tool you have), create a linux partition
(choose what type) ang mount it on /tmp. sorry but that is the simplest
route that i can think of but maybe somebody here can suggest a better idea.

ciao!

Re: [newbie] What are the environment variables?

2001-12-09 Thread tek1

environment variables store certain settings/values that are needed by
programs on your machine. it allows you to specify the settings/values in
a central location. environment variables are usually stored in
/etc/profile (for access by all users) or /home/user/.bashrc (for access by
only user).

for example, a lot of programs that use java need to know where your java
virtual machine (jvm) is located.

you can store the location of your jvm in the environment variable in one
of the above files as:

JAVA_VM=/usr/java/jvm/sun/131_01/bin
export JAVA_VM

then, a program, which needs to know where you jvm is located, you can
simply specify (in one that application's configuration files) $JAVA_VM.
then you don't have to write out the entire path.

also, when you change the path for your JAVA_VM, you won't have to update
each configuration file. just the JAVA_VM environment variable.

in short, environment variables can be thought of as a type of alias...

[newbie] not enough space on tmp? / archives for this list?

2001-12-09 Thread tek1

i just tried to install jbuilder in my home dir (e.g. /home/me) and i got
the below error:

Preparing to install...
WARNING! The amount of /tmp disk space required to perform
this installation is greater than what is available. Please
free up at least 34640 kilobytes in /tmp and attempt this
installation again. You may also set the IATEMPDIR environment
variable to a directory on a disk partition with enough free
disk space. To set the variable enter one of the following
commands at the UNIX command line prompt before running this
installer again:
- for Bourne shell (sh), ksh, bash and zsh:
  $ IATEMPDIR=/your/free/space/directory
  $ export IATEMPDIR
- for C shell (csh) and tcsh:
  $ setenv IATEMPDIR /your/free/space/directory

i have a 40gb hard drive and just recently set up my system, so i don't
know how this could happen. i don't remember the allocations that i did
when i installed mandrake, but i set it up for a server configuration and
don't believe that i modified it (much) from the default settings.

beside the solution prompted above (using the IATEMPDIR env), what are my
options?

can i delete all the files in /tmp? i saw that some of those files had
locks on them...

also, how can i quickly find out how much space is available on the hard
drive/partition? is there a quick command, or do i have to go to linuxconf
everytime?

my apologies because i do believe that someone asked a similar question not
so long ago about this on the list. but where are the searchable archives
for this list?

thanks...

scenario/pre-requisites:
---
1) windows username = myWinUser, password = 12345

linux/samba steps:

1) create a linux user:
  useradd myLinuxUser

2) open up the /etc/samba/smbusers file and add the below line:
 myLinuxUser = myWinUser
 * note: myWinUser is really the name of your samba user; this will
map your samba/win user to a linux user

3) go to kmenu/configuration/networking/samba (this starts swat)

4) create a password for the myWinUser (samba user)
 -click on passwords button
 -for username, type myWinUser
-for password, enter 12345 (the same password that myWinUser uses on

 -click add new user button

Re: [newbie] The problem with Linux

2001-11-25 Thread tek1

[stewart]
i agree, marketing also does play an important part, and in the public eye,
everyone knows microsoft. and yes, linux has grown by leaps and bounds in
10 yrs, and ms should be better considering that they've been around longer.

[michael]
i think that you misinterpreted what i said. i said
windows-software-compatible linux software. of course, there is a lot of
software for linux, but most of it cannot read files that were created in
windows. linux software needs to be able to allow end-users to easily
import their windows files, if windows users are expected to switch. also,
the installation procedure must be extremely simple. for us developers
who've been working with linux for a while, installation is a snap, but the
people whom we're trying to convert are not as experienced. on windows,
installation is pretty much just executing a .exe file. on linux, it is
not good to ask an inexperienced linux user to figure out how to
install .rpm, .bin, .sh, .gz, and .tar files. this is too many for the
linux newbie. newbies shouldn't have to use the shell prompt to install
something.

one other point, man pages are good, but may be difficult for a linux
newbie to interpret. documentation needs to be in a easy-to-use help gui
inside of the gui application, or formatted as easy-to-understand .html
files that the newbie can just click around in. (fortunately, mandrake has
made a good effort on this end).

again, if linux is to become mainstream on the desktop, it needs to
overcome the above hurdles, namingly making everything extremely simple and
easy for the new computer/linux user.

if it uses some encryption, then its fantastic...

wonder if it can be tunneled in SSH compressed...??

more trouble to configure than any 100 base card I've ever used.

My purpose was to run a web and mail server here on my DSL line. No

the hardware so I like the solution.

  'd say go for it.

thx very much for the advice! it worked! :)

Hi tek1!

I sure hope you'll get better help than this! (I'm going through the learning
curve for Postgresql from LM8.0).

I'll be using PostgreSQL with Linux-Kontor (an accounting package), and the
install instructions for Postgresql are fairly clear. You might want to check
them out.

Anyway, while as root user, change the password for the user postgres --
then exit the root shell.

su postgres [use your new password when it prompts you]

To answer your questions:
1) I've done it, and the postgres startup service still seems to work (though
I'm having all sorts of probs with postmaster and its refusal to accept
connection in the gui Postgresql Access.

2) Hopefully?? Check out the Newbie Mail Archive: RE:[ newbie] postgresql.
There were an articleson what you were asking.

Wish I could help more . . .

i too am looking to switch from my win2k system over to linux, as my system

glad for the staroffice6beta alternative to bring over all the ms office

emails, filters, and address book? i was able to import my filters into
kmail, but not emails and the filters...

also, is there a linux alternative to import ms outlook data (calendar,
contacts, etc.)?

re drafting packages on linux, try checking out the below 2:
 -dia
 -kivio

they're both located under office/graphs from the mandrake menu...

Hi tek!

Nope. I'm using the pre-installed version. Btw, shortly after I sent the last
reply, I solved my problems with gui Postgresql Access.

In case you run into the same problem: it took me three days to figure this
one out - I forgot to su to root (and exit after!) for:

bash$ export DISPLAY=hostname:0.0

As soon as I had entered this, of course I could access the db! (A big duhh
here!). I've found that if I plug away at something long enough, I get to
know the program.

[newbie] postgresql - changing location of db/cluster

2001-11-12 Thread tek1

mandrake automatically creates the postgres db/cluster in
/var/lib/pgsql/data and automatically starts the db/cluster.

what changes would one need to do if wanting to change the installation of
the db/cluster (e.g. to /var/db/postgres/data)?

would the following suffice?
-stop the postgres service
-delete /var/lib/pgsql/data
-set the PGDATA env to /var/db/postgres/data in /etc/profile
-initdb -D /var/db/postgres/data
-restart the postgres service

also, must a postgres user account be created when setting up a new
db/cluster using initdb? can any user account be used? if so, what
settings/permissions (if any) must be changed?

thanks.

Did you install Star Office with the /net switch? That is, did you run
the installer from the command line, like this:
 # so-6_0-beta-bin-linux-en.bin /net

Using the /net switch will setup Star Office in network mode, so that
each user may then have their own personal configuration of Star Office.
You may then run Star Office from the link in the staroffice6.0/
directory, which resides in your home directory.

Star Office tries to create menu items in your KDE menu, however because
Mandrake uses a special menu system, Star Office menu items will not
appear -- you need to create them yourself, with Mandrake's menu editor.
I should mention that in Gnome, a Star Office sub-menu with several
items did appear, under the Favorites menu (which is part of Gnome,
and not related to the special Mandrake menu system).
