[newbie] Modem help for a M$ refugee

2003-09-27 Thread Kaj Haulrich
My son-in-law just dumped his Windows2000 after the latest attack
from virus, worms and BSODs. I talked him into trying MDK 9.1.
Everything seemed to go well until he tried to connect. That's
why it is a little difficult for me to help him out, 'cause we
are 400 kilometes apart. So - until further progress is made -
we must communicate over phone line.

His problem is modem related. It is an E-Tech 56K Flex V.90.
Extern hardware modem. It seems to come with a Rockwell chipset.
When running drakconnect, he can go as far as to query the
modem. Then : nothing. No strings, no connection, nada.

I've googled around to no avail. Doesn't show up on the
compatibility lists, be it Mandrake, RedHat or S.u.S.E.. Some
posts on mailing lists claims it incompatible, some not.

Questions :

1. Does anyone here know if it is compatible ?
2. If it isn't : what modems are ?

Thanks in advance,

Kaj Haulrich.

if this is an external serial connected modem, as long as you are
looking at the correct ttySx where x equals the 'real' number of the

have a setting to disable it in bios? what ttyS0 is the config pointing

OK Ed, his modem is a serial one, external. It is connected to
ttsy1. - (I guess ttys0 is occupied by his original winmodem) -
and drakconnect recognizes it - somehow. I don't know about his
BIOS. We'll try again. - What about this Rockwell chipset - does
it matter ? I saw something about software compression not
working in linux on this chipset (whatever that is).

Thanks Ed, I'm afraid we have a long journey ahead of us.

Hi there, some Lucent modems are supported under Linux. My friend has one,
(I'm not sure what chipset) and it has worked well for him w/Mdk Linux 8.2.

You can check out this site for drivers for Lucent modems, but you will have
to know what chipset you have:
http://www.physcip.uni-stuttgart.de/heby/ltmodem/

Hope this helps. Best of luck to you.:)

Okay, I get to ask the stupid questions:

1. Is it plugged into your serial port?

2. Is it plugged into the same serial port it was plugged into when you first
used it? (if you're not sure, unplug it and stick it in the other port to
check, this has happened to me before)

3. Is it plugged in to its AC adapter, and is the adapter plugged into the
wall?

4. Is it turned on?

5. Is it connected to a working, unoccupied phone line? If so, take the cord
that is plugged into your modem right now and plug it into a telephone to
make sure it gets a dial tone.

I'm sure none of that helps, but every once in a while it's something very
simple like this. If this doesn't solve it you're going to actually have to
find someone who knows what they're talking about to help you. Good luck.

Isaac

Been there tried to do that, it's not worth the bother. You can find a good US
Robotics hardware modem on ebay for under $30, then just plug it in and your
troubles will be over. I have gotten a couple old US Robotics 28kbs on ebay for
under $15 each and even at just 28K they seem much faster than my phone line
and my ISP. However it would be nice to be able to use some of my pci modems
with Linux it just does not seem worth the bother for me. Maybe that is just
because I have been so darn busy the last few months that I dont have time enough
to make the pci modems work. maybe for someone with more spare time it may
be worth it.
Good Luck

Trouble It sounds like you have the wrong irq assigned.
Try to find out whichport and irq it uses. I had to use
windoze to set up my modem. You can find the properties in windoze
either by right clicking on the mycomputer icon then selecting
properties or by using the start/programs/accessories/ menu - I can't
remember which one offhand so try both. In kppp you can set it by
entering setup-modem. Set the modem for /dev/ttyS1 if your windows
wascom 2, /dev/ttyS2 for windows port com 3, etc. Use
setserial to set the irq: setserial /dev/ttyS(number) irq
(number). For example on mine it's:setserial /dev/ttyS2 irq
5. You can append this at the end of a startup file:
/etc/rc.d/rc.local and it will be executed at system
start-up.

Re: [newbie] Modem help needed

2000-09-01 Thread Charles A Edwards

Verify your BIOS is set for Non PnP OS
In Linux PCI modems are ttySs.
The setserial commands must be issued as root.
For a PCI modem use the followin directions.

. Log in as root and from terminal enter the following command
# cat /proc/pci

This will list all your PCI devices. On this list you should see either
Communication controller or Communication device,
That listing is your modem. If it shows as Comm. device you have a winmodem
and it won't work in Linux.
If it shows as Comm. controller proceed as follows:
Write down the first I/O range. In the example I am using 0xd800 replace
that with yours.
Enter the following
# setserial /dev/ttyS3 port 0xd800 spd_vhi skip_test auto_irq autoconfig
If there are no errors, then enter
# setserial /dev/ttyS3 uart 16550A

Select /dev/ttyS3 as the device in kppp and your modem should now initalize
and operate.
To make this perm. you will need to edit your rc.local file which is located
in the /etc/rc.d directory. Add the 2 setserial lines to the end of this
file Save the changes and reboot your system.

I'm running MDK 7.1, and I configured my OPTi sound last night. I have an older
machine (i586/120MHz), and may have an older chipset than you but I used sndconfig and
selected the MAD16 WSS driver since the chips were the same number. I had to
configure two DMA Channels, the IRQs, and I/O, but since I have Win98 on the same
machine, I took those settings from the win98 device map. You can also set up your
MPU-401 in sndconfig. After configuring, I went back to KDE (sndconfig should be run
from the command line, not in X) and played a CD. Sound was great!

my computer, I was not able to get online. I receive an error saying that

didn't have a device for pp0 anymore, but I did have an entry under my

and try my modem, I got an error saying that my modem was locked?! I'm
quite confused and not sure why my modem would be locked if the computer
couldn't turn it on in the first place...? :) Anyone know a solution to
this? I really appreciate all help... thanks in advance-

Lock files usually are in /tmp, with ls -a you should be able to make it
out. And you don't need to reconfig your modem, that info is stored in
another file.

ttyS3 is the right setting but the modem is on Conn 5 not Conn 4.
Did you run # cat /proc/pci ? It will give you a listing of all the PCI
cards on your computer and you will need the the IRQ and I/O listed under
Communication Controler to enter 2 more commands and to edit your rc.serial
file.
If you have not done this respond back and I will give you detailed info.

Is your Viking modem an external or internal
 modem? The problem that
Linux has with modems is not with drivers but in
 knowing where to find the
  modem.What problem are you having?
As for your friend there is nothing that he
can do that will let his
winmodem work in Linux. I understand that their
 are people trying to work
out ways for winmodems in Linux. One such being
 linmodem.org, but I have
not been able to access the sight so I don't know

You'll have better luck if you move the modem to COM1 or COM2.

This avoids potential IRQ conflicts on your system.

 Read 'man setserial'.

On my 7.02 box I use a diamond supra ISA V90 modem. It is set up for PNP
and it configures itself for IRQ 05 and I/O 0x03e8.

At boot up I noticed that when com 1,2,and 3 are configured, com 3 is set
up for I/O 0x03e8 but with IRQ 04

I placed 'setserial /dev/modem port 0x03e8 irq 05 uart 16550a' in my
/etc/rc.d/rc.local file. Works just fine.

I was thinking about sending out an e-mail about this subject and if one
could change the way linux configures the com ports at boot up, but after
reading 'man setserial' all my questions were answered.

Linux has a pretty step learning curve, but the more I get into it, the
more I like it.

Later all,

Gary

Re: [newbie] modem Help!

2000-01-17 Thread M Thompson

My advice is to return it and purchase a 3COM/USR modem that comes with
Jumpers on it. (Or purchase an external modem. Supposedly 99.9% of all
external modems work with Linux.) With the jumpers you can set the COM
port. Then just boot up linux and setup KPPP with the COM port number and
your ISP information. It should work.

Wouldn't it have come with a drivers disk that maybe has the Linux drivers on it?
(Don't
