Thanks, will do. I like to leave this puter in linux at night anyway. The screensaver gives off more light to see my way to the john. It is also a nice level to wake your eyes up to. I can tell you this much, the output is supposed to be three files of information about the modem possibilities. I figured it was wrong somewhere because of that and the gcc thing. The reasion there is not equivelent to c:\ is that Linux uses one big file system. Drives are files. They can be mounted almost anyware. With Mandrake, C:\ is usualy mounted on /mnt/windows, but it doesn't have to be. Now, your file should be, from the information you have given me, at /mnt/windows/temp with a file name of scanModem.gz. I think the problem you are running into is that the file name is not exactly what you told us it was before. Under Linux, scanmodem.gz in NOT the same file as scanModem.gz. So, instead of using: cp /mnt/windows/temp/scanmodem.gz scanmodem.gz use cp /mnt/windows/temp/scanModem.gz scanmodem.gz The difference is the capital M in the file name. A small thing, but an important one. (Just like the difference between \ for DOS/Windows and / for Linux in path names, or the way : and ; are used. The funny part is that the UNIX usage is older, but people from the DOS/Windows world have to learn a "new" way of doing things...) Mikkel Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? The a: part is because of the use of mcopy. It is part of the mtools package that allows access to MS-DOS drives and floppies. Exactly what a: referes to is definded in the config file, but the default is /dev/fd0. c: is usualy a file on the drive that is accessed like a hard drive. The thing about mtools is that when you are working with floppies, you normaly are working with an UNMOUNTED floppy. They were more usefull before things like aumounting of floppies, or when you didn't want to allow users to mount the floppy drive. But they are still handy for emulated DOS drives used with dosumu. I knew scanmodem.gz. was a zipped file, but I did not know it had to be uzipped before chmod, whatever it's function, could act upon it. Thanks I will definitely try that. Well, you were trying to run chmod on scanmodem, but the file scanmodem is not the same as scanmodem.gz. So chmod failed. When you uncompress the file using gunzip, it changes the name of the file as part of the process. It normaly restores the origional name of the file. Thus .gz becomes , .tgz becomes .tar, and so on. (While you could have run "chmod +x scanmodem.gz" and it would have worked, it doesn't realy make sence to make a compressed file executable.) chmode changes the "mode" of the file. While Windows uses the extension of a file to determine if it is executable, Linux uses the mode of the file. And because Linux is designed to be multi-user, you actualy have 3 levels of "mode". You have the mode for the "owner" of the file, the mode for the "group" of the file, and the mode for everyone else. This allows you do do things like have a file that can only be run by the "owner", can be written and read by the "owner", users in the same group as the file, and can be read by everyone. The solution, impossible as it would seem was that I deleted the director winDmodem I had accidentally created. I tried the mcopy again and got no error. AHHAA! Tried a dir command in winmodem, which previously produced nothing, and bingo the filev was now there. I wouldn't have believed it had someone told me that was the problem. Now there is another problem the chmod command fails to find attributes because it can't find any or the file. Anybody know what is wrong there? Could x not be installed/configured or something else. Even simpler - scanmodem does not exist. You forgot to uncompress scanmodem.gz to scanmodem. So there is no file "scanmodem" to make executable. I always fall asleep for another hour after breakfast. What do you get when you run mcopy? It could be that mtools are not installed on your machine. Try this - in place of "mcopy a:scanmodem.gz", try "cp /mnt/floppy/scanmodem.gz scanmodem.gz" and see if that works. If it doesn't work, let us know the error message. Also, let us know the output of "ls /mnt/floppy". Be sure the floppy with scanmodem.gz is in the drive when running both commands. Mikkel Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? HHEELLPP! Sheesh. Does anybody know how this is done after the file has been downloaded to a floppy? Try something like this... Open a terminal window in Linux Put the floppy you made in Windows in "drive A:" Type these commands: mkdir Wmodem cd Wmodem mcopy a:scanmodem.gz gnuzip scanmodem.gz chmod +x scanmodem ./scanmodem You may have to run "su" before running ./scanmodem - I don't remember if it will run as a normal user. All the instructions are for running in the command line interface, and not from X, so you nead a terminal window, or you need to drop to the command line. Now, as to what the commands do: mkdiw Wmodem - Creates a new directory off your home directory. cd Wmodem - Changes to that directory. mcopy a:scanmodem.gz - Coppies the file scanmodem.gz from a FAT formatted floppy. gunzip scanmodem.gz- Uncompresses the fiel scanmodem.gz (to scanmodem) chmod +x scanmodem - makes the file scanmodem executable. ./scanmodem - runs the file scanmodem in the current directory. I hope this helps. Most of these instructions assume you are running from the command line, or a terminal in X. Unless they specificly tell you to run the commands from a "run box", run them from a terminal, or from the command line interface. This is especialy true when running a series of commands, as the next command normaly depends on the results of the previus command. Mikkel Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Sheesh. Does anybody know how this is done after the file has > been downloaded to a floppy? I would assume that you would run this 'scanmodem' script from the directory it is in (hence the './'), same goes for the 'chmod +x scanmodem'. In general, you would run commands on a given file while *in* the directory containing the file, and I would doubt very much they are talking about a 'run box', the instructions assume you are at a command prompt. -- JoeHill / RLU #282046 / www.freeyourmachine.org 14:00:00 up 18 days, 2:38, 6 users, load average: 0.00, 0.01, 0.00 +++ "When you give food to the poor, they call you a saint.
