Re: [newbie] Modem's busy

2000-12-01 Thread Mark Weaver

doesn't anyone read the friggin HCLs anymore? I can't believe how many
times folks will sit here on the list and discuss, argue, and exchange
tidbits about modems for Mandrake when there is a very clear list of
modems that "are" supported by this particular distribution of Linux.

In case there is anyone that doesn't know what an HCL is it is a Hardware
Compatibility List. At the Mandrake home page there is a link to this very
list which is named "Hardware".

In case you happen to have a "win-modem" in your machine you should do
search on the Newbie list archives for messages about this very
thing. there are links galore that can point to sites that will tell you
IF you will be able to get your win-modem to work, other sites that list
modems by manufacturer, whether or not they're a win-modem, or hardware
modem, and TONS of other stuff.

Personally I think there should be an attention message that comes
standard with every distribution of Mandrake instruction the consumer to
check the HCL to make sure their hardware is supported. I mean something
like a GIANT sticker that can't be missed.

Ok...I think I'm done ranting...thank you for listening.

Mines on com1. There is a very good reason for this.

I got a ready made computer and the manufacturer only put one uart in.
Without more uarts coms 2 thru 4 will not work. The cheap manufacturer left
out the chips for the serial ports.

Dear All,
I installed Suse 7 a couple of days ago and it was sharing my computer

trying to setup my internet in Suse and I think it stole my serial port
or i/o or whatever because now I cannot get on the net with Linux7.2.

I was on the net without a problem before with Linux 7.2. I have set up
everything I can however it says my modem is busy and that there is no
card found even though I have it set up as it was before in the
/etc/modules.conf file and with linux conference.

One benefit I got though is now my Mp'3 play great in LinuxM7.2 and they
did not before. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am thinking of
removing Suse and hopefully that will get my internet up in Linux7.2
again. What would be the best way to do this? Thank you very much for

Hi Marcia,

When you say your computer had(has) LinuxM7.2 I'm assuming you mean Linux
Mandrake 7.2, right? And then you also have Suse 7... ok, now I have
never tried Suse, and I'm pretty new to Mandrake, but why do you need
both? I would just pick one and concentrate on getting that one working
right, but if you do want to keep both I think you should be able to do
that depending on how you partition the drive. And if you wanted to get
rid of one you might think about how you want to partition that old
space, so either way it sounds like you should look at your partition
tables using something like DiskDrake. And if you do want to keep both
check your lilo/grub conf. settings.

I agree with Jim, stick to one distro until you get a strong basic
knowledge of linux then move on. Mandrake is sometimes not the best to

OK, I missed puttin a space between 'non' and 'sense' Mea culpa!
Mea culpa!
*ALL* external modems won't work with OS's other than M$! IMO, the
ready answer of "get an external modem" is _bad_ advice. My reasons
are:
1) there's a lot of sorry motherboards out there that don't work with
serial devices any better than they do with anything (eg, anything Pc
Chips, ready mades like dell, gateway, compaq,... etc.).
2) all externals modems aren't serial, many now are USB (as in Uncle'S
Billy), and they're often very difficult to setup. Plus
4) (my unfavorite number is 3 ;) Some external modems are WINmodems!
Yes, it's true, there's a few out there.
5) There's very good internal hardware modems available, both ISA and
PCI bus.http://www.kcdata.com/~gromitkc/winmodem.html
6) 'hardware modems' @ pricewatch.com, internal/PCI start at $17
Best, if you can find one is a Phoebe/TX Instruments PCI Internal, $50
   (I'd recommend a NON-voice modem)
7) Who wants another box an' a bunch of wires on their desk ??
8) I'd end up spill'n beer all over an external anyhow
even if i gave up my ash tray  :p   ;

Dennis,
I had a modem seem to stop working once in Mandrake. It was a single

I finally traced it down to a single ` having turned into a '. or vice
versa, in my chat-script.
No idea how it happened but it fixed it right up.
I remember digging through log files till I got a clue but its been a
while and I dont remember much more than that.
If you figure it out, post what you did. Sounds like a real bear!

first of allmodems are always commonly hooked up
on com 2 some times on com3 and 4but hardly never on
com1
this is the first time...I've ever heard of a modem hooked
up as com1
the mouse is supposed to use com 1...try setting it up on
com2 and I
bet it works

no , this is not nonsense. external modems work quite well
  with linux.

i also want to share with everyone a way to make your
printer work. i am using a panasonice laser jet. there
is a driver in 7.2 for it. after installing it my printer
was acting crazy. continually printing pages over and over.
i uninstalled the driver finally , shut down the computer
and rebooted. i also turned off the printer. i started
kde and reinstalled the driver. printer works fine now.

  i just love linux :)
I agree with the external modems work in linux. I have a Best Data ext
Modem that worked very well until recently. It still works in windows
but I keep getting a "Modem does not respond". I have tried to reset,
unplug, reconfig, etc. To no avail. The modem is plugged into com1 i.e.
ttyS0 and works in windows, but no response in 7.2. It does not show up
in harddrake either. Any suggestions out there. Oh, I am on the Linux
only box right now using a Best Data internal modem which also works
very well and says Linux compatable on the box. Thanks for any help with
 this puzzle.

Re: [newbie] Modem's busy

2000-11-25 Thread Bob Ackerman

I found an internal modem that works with Linux. It is a "ActionTec 56K
Internal PCI Call Waiting Modem". On the box it says it supports Linux
and was under $70 at WalMart. I had my doubts but I bought it to try it
and I'm using it right now. I have had no problems with it at all. I
have not tried the call waiting portion, nor do I expect to because I
don't plan to have call waiting.

The 7.2 install didn't recognize it but the modem manual was clear on
how to manually setup the modem.

Romanwith a stipulation. It must be a conventional
external modem in that it plugs into one of the conventional
com ports (not usb, some usb modems, it seems have turned out
to be of the winmodem persuasion). :-)

Hi
Victor,

I'm
getting the same "modem is busy" message in Linux-mandrake7.1. I believe the
reason to be because I have a "soft" modem which is not supported by Linux O.S.
Like you I'm a complete newbie [only 18 months with Windows 98] and the only
solution that occurs to me is to change the modem. Perhaps someone more
knowledgeable will be able to give us both an opinion on this through the
list.

Clive
Deeming.

  Hi
  everybody!

  Does
anybody know how to deal with following
  trouble:

  I’ve
installed Mandrake 7, when trying to get online it comes with message “modem
is busy”. I haven’t start any pro which would use
  modem.

  PS.
Please, treat me like newbie! While reading the post, I’ve found that your
definition of newbie is some kind different than what I thought of it. I AM

2000-11-23 Thread Charles A Edwards

That could be 1 reason and if that is the case you may find help at
linmodem.org. Depending upon what chipset your modem uses you may be able to
find a driver module there.

 There are other possible reasons.
1) Your modem is set to the wrong port in kppp
2) There is an IRQ conflict between your modem and another device in your
system

To help you we will need more info.
What is Brand and model # of your modem?
Is it an externel or internal (PCI or ISA) modem?
How do you now have kppp configured?

   Charles
