Mark,

Log on as "root", then run linuxconf either from a command line or by clicking
the icon on the KDE desktop. Next select "networking", then ppp at the bottom
of the list. If the button is not visible (in KDE), hold the ALT key while
draging the linuxconf window up until you can see the ppp button. As you set up
pppd, you will see a check box to allow users to connect, click it if there is
not a check mark in the box. Finally, exit back out of all the opened levels,
and linuxconf will ask you to "activate the changes". Do so and the job is done.

No, Kingston RAM upgrades are not the issue. Kingston is the leading
producer of OEM RAM in the world. That was not the problem, whatever the
problem was, I corrected it with I think the "noaccel" option and a hard

 Don't despair!

Sounds like you've got all of the beginnings working, now it's just time
to tune the behaviour. Go ahead and start X again into that huge
 desktop.

Try the Ctrl-Alt-NumPad+ and Ctrl-Alt-NumPad- key combinations to see if
any of those help with the big desktop issue.

Really, it's just a matter of editing /etc/X11/XF86Config to get rid of
the resolutions that you don't want. But first, make sure that the
 larger resolutions really work.

Drop a note back if this helps.

Re: [newbie] Startup issues.

1999-12-20 Thread Sam Roza

Steve,

WHen you run "setup" from linux 3 and go through all of your fine-tuning,
you come to the bottom and it says "desktop settings". If you go through
that menu, it will allow you to set your X to start up in "plain X" or KDE.

When I chose "plain X" and did startx, a very plain looking GUI shows up,
and looks great! But you don't get hi-res, and I think for a novice it lacks
quite a bit of functions.

I will go to the config file and look over the samples for monitors and edit
it. I will also go to XFree86.org and do some more reading.

You might try the release notes for 3.3.5 at the XFree website. They
might have better information about any problems with using the Cirrus
 chipset. XFree is at www.xfree86.org

Now I've discovered that I can get my plain GUI to work excellently, but
the
KDE desktop just locks up. Not sure why it locks up when it should just
look
  crappy.

What do you mean "plain GUI"? You mentioned in an earlier message that
you were going to boot with "linux 3"... that will get you just plain
text mode that doesn't have much to do with video card resolutions at
 all.

When the "can you see this message" message pops up after setting up,
everything looks good until the countdown numbers change, then it fails
to
redraw, and all of the numbers and letters write over each other. Makes
me
think this is a Monitor issue...

Well, the monitor only draws what the video card tells it to. I'd look
into deja.com to see if there are any messages from other Cirrus users
that might point out what sorts of problems they've encountered.

My monitor is a Compaq V70 17" monitor Hor. sync 30-69 and Vert. 37.5
@1280x1024. It is not in the monitor list, and when I set custom params,
I
choose the closest to it, and I get garbage, go as low as
possible...same
  effect.

Are you comfortable editing /etc/X11/XF86Config? You can set the
correct parameters in that file. Won't make alot of difference until
you get the video card issues sorted out though...

Re: [newbie] Startup issues.

1999-12-20 Thread Hidong Kim

Hi, Sam,

If you're still getting that huge screen that requires you to scroll the
mouse to see the entire thing, you may not have the "Virtual" parameter
set in your /etc/X11/XF86Config. The Virtual parameter should be set to
the same pixel resolution that you want to see on the screen. For
example, I like 1024 x 768 at 32 bpp for my machine. Here's a piece
from my /etc/X11/XF86Config:

Section "Screen"
Driver "svga"
# Use Device "Generic VGA" for Standard VGA 320x200x256
#Device "Generic VGA"
Device "mystique"
Monitor "vivitron"
Subsection "Display"
Depth 8
# Omit the Modes line for the "Generic VGA" device
Modes "640x480" "800x600" "1024x768" "1280x1024"
ViewPort0 0
# Use Virtual 320 200 for Generic VGA
EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "640x480" "800x600" "1024x768" "1280x1024"
ViewPort0 0
EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "640x480" "800x600" "1024x768" "1280x1024"
ViewPort0 0
EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 32
Modes "1024x768"
ViewPort0 0
Virtual 1024 768
EndSubsection
EndSection

Notice in the Depth 32 section, I have one screen resolution mode and
the same resolution for the Virtual parameter. I edited this file
manually after running xf86config. I start X with 'startx -- -bpp 32'.
This starts X in 32 bits per pixel, which according to the
/etc/X11/XF86Config defaults to a screen resolution of 1024 x 768. Hope
this helps. Good luck,

Hidong

Ernie,

I am past this now...I know the chipset(GD5436), and the RAM is at least 2
MB(there's a Kingston VRAM upgrade on the motherboard). I've run xf86config
and Xconfigurator so many times I can enter all responses without looking
now. I also have the specs for my monitor, and setting the correct
settings does nothing but give me a screen so huge in size that I have to
scroll my mouse in all directions to see it.

Still nothing(as my last posts say)...I've updated my config file just like
the readme's say and I'm at my ropes end.

I don't think I've ever had this much trouble with Win95...

PLEASE HELP, I'm feeling like this was a huge waste of time and money and I
really want this to work for experience sake.

Sam ROza

I will try starting in Linux 3 and running setup

Sounds like you've got all of the beginnings working, now it's just time
to tune the behaviour. Go ahead and start X again into that huge
desktop.

Try the Ctrl-Alt-NumPad+ and Ctrl-Alt-NumPad- key combinations to see if
any of those help with the big desktop issue.

Really, it's just a matter of editing /etc/X11/XF86Config to get rid of
the resolutions that you don't want. But first, make sure that the
larger resolutions really work.

Drop a note back if this helps.

Steve, all,

Thanks for the replies. Ok, I've edited and all of that, but I can't seem to
find the right combos(noaccel still doesn't work, just locks up)...

Now I've discovered that I can get my plain GUI to work excellently, but the
KDE desktop just locks up. Not sure why it locks up when it should just look
crappy.

When the "can you see this message" message pops up after setting up,
everything looks good until the countdown numbers change, then it fails to
redraw, and all of the numbers and letters write over each other. Makes me
think this is a Monitor issue...

My monitor is a Compaq V70 17" monitor Hor. sync 30-69 and Vert. 37.5
@1280x1024. It is not in the monitor list, and when I set custom params, I
choose the closest to it, and I get garbage, go as low as possible...same
effect.

Any ideas??

You *have* run Xconfigurator specified your card, haven't you? Do you know
how much RAM it's got? Moving the RAM setting down a notch in Xconfigurator
can sometimes help, is another setting you can play with...

also, you could try asking about your problem in the "comp.windows.x"
newsgroup (or searching it @ deja.com).

As for buying a new card, it's what I did when I was running
Caldera 2.2 it didn't support my embedded chip. Installing it was as
simple as slipping a jumper on the motherboard.
Of corse, YMMV, from the doc's, it seems you should be able to get your
own going

Xconfigurator should work o.k., Iv'e always had hassles with fontpath
default resolutions with xf86config Mandrake(which BTW is the right way to
spell it, XF86Config is the name of the file it makes) . Try to find out
what your card is. In Win98 right click a clear area of your desktop then
Lclick
proprertys -- settings -- advanced --adapter you should see it

Also, do you Know what version of xfree86 you have?
MDK 6.1 has the newest version, but 6.0 has an older one which may not work
as well for your card. www.xfree86.org
is a good place to look if you have problems with X.

You have to be "root" (admin) to run this. The FULL path
 will be /usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config
Please note that this is ALL LOWER CASE. This DOES make a
difference. The /etc/X11/XF86Config you are referring to is
a textfile which you can manually edit to config your

AGAINST that. Hell, I've been using Linux on my desktop

logout. It's best to run xf86config as root user. xf86config should
take you through the steps to configure your hardware for X. Before you
run it, know what kind of video card you have, its RAM, and the

could damage the monitor. All of this information should be in the
documentation that came with your hardware. OK, good luck,

have been a case error. Either way, why I type in "X" it just hangs like a
DaWg.

  Hi, Sam,

'xf86config' (all lower case) from the command prompt should work.
XF86Config is a configuration file which xf86config should create. Have
you tried quitting out of KDE and issuing the command from the normal
VGA screen? To quit out of KDE, right click on the desktop and select
logout. It's best to run xf86config as root user. xf86config should
take you through the steps to configure your hardware for X. Before you
run it, know what kind of video card you have, its RAM, and the
horizontal and vertical sync rates for your monitor. Knowing your
monitor specs is critical. If you use the wrong monitor specs, you
could damage the monitor. All of this information should be in the
documentation that came with your hardware. OK, good luck,

 that

  Hello All,

I am new to the list, and am having difficulties.

Last night I tried to install Linux-mandrake and it went GREAT,
   until I got
to X setup. I just can't seem to get my settings right. I am
   installing on
a Compaq Deskpro P166 with a soundblaster(this worked in the
   installation)
and a Cirrus logic video board(I don't know what chipset or RAM).

The first time I loaded it, I got into KDE(X?) but the screen was
   so messed
up I couldn't use it, and I couldn't find a way to reset the video
settings. I was reserved and I ended up re-installing linux a
 few times
before I got a successful install.

Now that everything is complete, and I can use unix(with my limited
knowledge of unix it is difficult for me), from a console to be
   ROOT, and
run Xconfigurator. After setting up Xconfig with my monitor's
   settings, and
having it probe my adapter(when it probes, the specs sound right),
   but then
the test screen comes up and asks "Can tyou read this message?" and
   I can
read the message, but the boxes below are all skewed...

I got it looking decent and selected yes when it asked my if I
   could see
the message. Now it freezes when going into X...PLEASE HELP!!

Johner...how did this the last one get addressed to you instead of
the list? Anyway, I got to thinking about this root thing and began to
wonder (I don't believe I've actually run xf86config as other than root)
what happens when an upriveleged user finishes running xf86config and it
goes to write the XF86Config file whoich requires root priveleges to
write?

I think I'll stck this back into the list to continue the thread.

Johnroot! Not on my system? Here's my path as alan (an
 unpriveleged user):

Why would a program in a path segment that begins with /usr require root
 priveleges?

You have to be "root" (admin) to run this. The FULL path
  will be /usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config
Please note that this is ALL LOWER CASE. This DOES make a
difference. The /etc/X11/XF86Config you are referring to is
a textfile which you can manually edit to config your
video. As you are an admitted newbie, I highly recommend
AGAINST that. Hell, I've been using Linux on my desktop
for almost a year now, and I *still* won't hand edit that
  file! :-)

Sam"it kinda just sat there" is not a good description of what
occurred when you typed startx. Also I don't understand the meaning of
"why I type in "X" it just hangs like a DaWg."

So, did you type startx alone on a console command line? Now two things
could happen other than going into KDE. First, nothing (a new command
line is printed). Second, a bunch of stuff flashes by on the screen
ending in an error message and a new command line is printed.

So what happened?

 Hello guys,

Now that I've used xf86config to set things up, I get a picture...but all text is
LAME. I see through the boxes, it leaves streaks, everything.

I've tried every setting for acceleration(vga, svga, etc.), and almost every monitor
setting. I've had it detect my clocks, I've had it load defaults etc., all to no
avail.

Can someone help? I have a Cirrus logic 5436 card...I'm to the end of my rope pretty
much.

 Sam

search for "Cirrus logic 54" in the archives...

Thanks to Axalon for pointing me in the direction of the archives. I found
lots of stuff on the Cirrus cards, but I found few solutions.

The most promising of which woulf be to update the xf86config RPG's, but I
don't know what they are, or if I would even know what to do with them if I
had them.

Another thing...how do I read readme's and such? what program would I use
from a console to look at them?

Thanl you in advance,

Sam
