Well the hd on my 10.1 system died and with the release of 10.2 coming
soon I did not see the point of reinstalling 10.0 as the system will be
changed to 10.1 when 10.2 is released.

As well I really do not have the time to do updates for 3 Mdk releases.

You just need to take a big drought of mash, bite the bullet and
upgrade that box of yours (-:

when I installed claws2, it first removed my previous sylpheed install,
then after installing the new version, a message popped up stating
something to the effect that the new location for the config files is
~/.sylpheed-gtk2 and that you could transfer your old config files
over and it would work.

I passed on that myself due to a bad experience before attempting such.
Wasn't much to reset up anyway.

Remember it's a devel release so you will see differences between it and
the 1.0.3 release.

That being said it will have no affect on your current Claws mail and
configuration.
It uses ~./sylpheed-gtk2 rather than ~./sylpheed

If you wish to try it Please use urpmi to install it.
This will allow for auto removal of all reg claws rpms, including
plugins, and in addition display a README.urpmi to assist with the
migration to the GTK2 branch of claws

No, scanners use *sane* (Scanner Access Now Easy) as a backend.
You'll have to install that in order to scan. Furthermore, look

'Morning, Rosemary. XSane is the front-end for the SANE (Scanners Are Now
Easy) drivers, and the other one interfaces with Gimp. I can open Gimp2,
File Acquire and I'm given the choice of screenshot or any devices it
thinks could feed it. Interestingly my video-capture card is one interface,
but I haven't tried that yet - maybe it would do a screenshot type of thing
from my camcorder.

So yes, from Gimp2 I can scan in anything that I know is going to need some
attention. That's really useful as I don't have to save it before editing.

Actually there are two more lists after the ones that Anne was kind
enough to point out to you. Fourth is the Pizza list. Start by
selecting the largest pizza listed and choose to install that. Fifth is
the Beer list. While waiting for the Pizza list to finish, select
the proper beers according to your taste. Make sure you enjoy both the
pizza list and beer list as you happily reboot your MDK box and
customise it to your liking. Do not mount the pizza over your keyboard
- ditto with the beer. That could ruin your keyboard and mouse.

of all of the updates available. I see a lot of packages that are
very similar in name except for the very ending. For example,
 aspell-0.50.5-3.1.101mdk and aspell-0.50.4.1-2.1.100mdk. Which do I
choose? It won't let me choose both. Are the 100mdk packages for
Mandrake 10.0 and the 101mdk packages for 10.1?

The package with the highest number is the latest, ie 0.50.53.1.101mdk
is newer then 0.50.4.1-2.1.100mdk. So I always go with the package
that has the highest number attached to it. This is one of the
problems with updates when you have just done a fresh install, you
will sometimes see two different versions of a package. And yes they
are both for 10.1 it is just that there have been two updates since
the release of 10.1

Regards,
Dan Gordon

run the stock Mdk rpm Or the 10.1 rpm available from my site, in this
instance, since I have uploaded no update, it is the 10.1a claws I am

I have no doubt you are suffering the problem which you detailed but the

Can you launch claws from a term and then post the output relevant to

Have you used easy urpmi to redefine your sources
http://urpmi.org/easyurpmi/index.php
Its likely that the server you are using has finially swapped over to
the new format,
you need to go to easy urpmi and redine your urpmi sources..

As for the number of updates... are you surprised?? community was more
or less an extra release canditate..
Official is the finished product.. there are a heap of things that were
fixed or updated between community and official.

I would feel abit weird if there were not significant updates...
That was after all, the whole point for releasing community in the first
place.

I don't know about downloading Mandrake 10.0 Official, but, you can buy the

http://www.almostfreelinux.com

This is how I got my current Mandrake 10.0 Community and it installed without
any problems. I am very happy with it. I bought the Official 10.0 from Almost
Free Linux yesterday and they shipped it the same day. I should have it
arriving in the mail Monday or Tuesday - or thereabouts. I would look into

Re: [newbie] updates

2004-04-16 Thread Frank

If you use urpmi.removemedia you will loose access to your CD's for those things you have not installed yet when attempting to use urpmi.

I suggest you go to www.urpmi.org and read more about urpmi and in particular, how to remove specific media you no longer wish to have.

You can determine what media you have by viewing /etc/urpmi/urpmi.conf

Know also that with a little renaming of your media you can have extra sites listed for simular media.

Enjoy

SInce easyurpmi doesn't have updated mirrors and I'm new to this urpmi thing,
I just want to confirm:

Would this be the path to the new Stable branch that I should be setting up as
Main?

ftp://ftp.proxad.net/pub/Distributions_Linux/mandrake/Mandrakelinux/official/current/i586/Mandrake/RPMS

Updates are easy to find or urpmi, but not Main (which is the same as
core and stable, I guess)

Clicking through the FTP site shows a couple of possibilities, so I just want
to make sure this is the correct one, before going forward.

And I assume what I'd enter in to the console would be:
urpmi.addmedia main
ftp://ftp.proxad.net/pub/Distributions_Linux/mandrake/Mandrakelinux/official/current/i586/Mandrake/RPMS

with ../base/hdlist.cz

Wasn't there a layout of the new mirror structure released somewhere. I'm
going back and can't seem to find it.

Thanks,
Rory

Okay, I just checked the following for updates:
Official Branch:
urpmi.addmedia main

ftp://ftp.proxad.net/pub/Distributions_Linux/mandrake/Mandrakelinux/official/current/i586/Mandrake/RPMS

with ../base/hdlist.cz

There was nothing to update on my computer, so I removed Main (which I think
I'm supposed to do if I'm going to add Community). I then added and checked
Community.

Community Branch:
urpmi.addmedia community
ftp://ftp.proxad.net/pub/Distributions_Linux/mandrake/Mandrakelinux/devel/community/i586/Mandrake/RPMS

with ../base/hdlist.cz

There was nothing to update here, either. Both said, Everything already
installed.

After adding these sources, in both cases I did: urpmi.update -a

The only updates I've done since loading the 10.0 CD ISO's are the few files
that were security patches.

Shouldn't I have at least gotten updates when I checked the Community branch
or does this seem right to people?

And so in the new tree, does this folder in the Community section become the
equivalent of CD4?

ftp://ftp.proxad.net/pub/Distributions_Linux/mandrake/Mandrakelinux/devel/community/contrib/i586

It's basically the same as this folder in the Cooker section (without the
bleeding-edge updates), right?

ftp://ftp.proxad.net/pub/Distributions_Linux/mandrake/Mandrakelinux/devel/cooker/contrib/i586

Apologies for the basic yet particular questions. Just trying to figure out
my way around and what I should be adding.

Thank you Charles, for the occasion for trying out the newest version of

It looks like GIMP's installer has still some bugs (and cannot create

Various differences are contained between one release and another. The
updates are for bug and security fixes. New releases normaly contain new

fully updated, say 8.0 is not the same as 8.1. Albeit close in most user

There's been a bit of talk of late about ISO images including updates. I
just had a browse around the Mandrake site and spotted the instructions
 for
getting the Cassini mirror (that's under way now, but that's not why i
  post).

In those instructions, it tells you to get the mirror and then run
  'genhdlist /6.1bdir'

Using this technique, could i then copy my 6.0 ISO to the hard disk.
Overwrite the relevent files wth all the updates, and then update the
 hdlist
file and create a new updated ISO image ??

Yes. The program genhdlis is in the /misc directory on the CD. Here is
what
 I have learned:

For example, I created a directory named /usr/local/newcd. I then copied
all
the files from the actual cd to /usr/local/newcd so that I have a
 /usr/local/newcd/Mandrake directory and a /usr/local/newcd/Mandrake/RPMS
directory and so on. Then cd /usr/local/newcd/MISC and ./genhdlis
 /usr/local/newcd.

First, make certain you delete the older versions of the rpm's after you
have updated the rpm's. If you have any special rpm's, you could put them
in
the /APPS directory. You can also delete any unneeded rpm's (like the
manpages for languages for which you have no need). You should also check
 dependencies for any replacement rpm's.

I also updated the dos utilities (rawrite2, the current RawWrite for
Windows, some other stuff) and included additional docs that I found
useful.
Also, I got the most current Lnx4Win files and even took the gui install
 stuff from cooker.

If you want to modify the packages that are installed by default, the list
is in /Mandrake/BASE/COMPS. For a simple, non-networked desktop computer,
you could eliminate a lot of stuff. You could also make any special rpm's
a
part of the base install or any new menu choice you make.

To test your "new" CD, try a hard drive install. If it works, burn
yourself
 a new customized CD.

FWIW, don't try copying and replacing files in Win9x - the CD filenames in
Win9x are shown in 8.3 format and the capitalization of directory names
can
change causing scripts to fail to execute.

 Have fun.

 Hoyt
