/mnt/pippo/boot/vmlinuz.

./configure --with-cards=emu10k1
make install
./snddevices

in quella delle libs e utils solo:
./configure
make install

suono (soundcore) e nessun altro driver (ovviamente che NON sia modulo);

Buon lavoro!

Hey,

(Sorry for late reply, ISP's mailserver didn't want to send my mail)

 Rich, two suggestions :

If you run KDE or GNOME, open Control Center, type in your
root-password, and select Boot. Then, select Boot Config. Now, in
the upper right corner, click Configure. This opens a dialog-box,
called Bootloader Main Options. Here, you can select the boot
device. I guess you can choose whatever here.

If still in trouble, post two files to the list :
 1. : /etc/lilo.conf
 2. : /etc/fstab

I'm not sure that I understand the second part of your answer. Where
exactly do I put those statements? In the boot loader?

This meant that you should send a copy of the files named lilo.conf
and fstab which can both be found in the /etc directory to this
mailing list. Copy their contents to a mail and send it here.

Hey,

(Sorry for late reply, ISP's mailserver didn't want to send my mail)
:-(

I was looking for a cheap laptop to install Mandrake.
Unlike home made towers, it is quite difficult to buy
parts, so I had a look at the net in order to find computers
without windows. I found an interesting home page:

 http://www.bestpricecomputers.ltd.uk/products/nowindows.htm

At the beginning of the page, they give a few links related
to Microsoft's unfair practices, with sounds good at a first
glance. But in the paragraph Not to worry, I'll install Windows
 myself, they say:

We do not ship PCs with blank hard disks.. When reading
a bit further, you understand that this means, we will not ship
 without windows.

AFAIK you can uninstall Windows, remove it from all storage media and
give the installation back CD to the retailer for a full refund. It is
in Micros~1 Windows' EULA. There has been a bit of fuss about it
maybe a year ago IIRC when Linux users in Australia (again IIRC)
wanted to use Linux and didn't want Windows preinstalled and they
found this in the EULA so they went back to the store and got the
refund.

Now I hope I am not mixing another story with this but I think a
similar thing happened later in the US and the Linux users organised a
group trip to return Windows and Micros~1 welcomed them with a
Microsoft greets the Linux community banner.

Well, this everything is IIRC, so anyone please jump in and correct
me.

Thanks
Roman

One way to do it is to right-click on the icon and then click on

icons or you can choose a .png or .xpm file. Pick up a new icon and it's
 done.

I've received 3 identical answers, but it doesn't work here! Nothing
happens when I click on the icon in the dialog box. I can change the
icon by right clicking and then selecting Edit File Type.
Unfortunately, this also changes all of the other, similar, non-embedded

You are supposed to click Properties, not Edit File Type.
Then click the icon image and choose another one. This really should
work.

Go to the source directory of that app and do make uninstall.

This depends on the make script. If it supports uninstalling, you

I think that the best way to handle the installation of tarballs is
through checkinstall. Use it to create an rpm based on the tarball,
then you can uninstall the program with rpm if you want to. No need
to mess around with 'make uninstall' anymore, which may or may not
work. I highly recommend this program!

It is the devel pkg, when the wrong one is installed, both in 8.1
and 8.2, which will case X apps to to either not work or to not
  work properly.
  Got it right now.

I knew you would ;) Actually when I was runnin a mix of 8.1
and 8.2cooker, I tried both solutions. Havin both libs installed, or
just libpng3 installed and then creating this link
 ln -s /usr/lib/libpng.so.3 /usr/lib/libpng.so.2
I had no problems with either way, but in fairness, the discussion on
the cooker list was that havin both libpng2 and libpng3 installed
could cause problems, and creating a link was no better.

I run cooker ft and never saw a problem with both libs installed.
The symlnk is fine but where I found a problem with it is that not all
apps needing libpng2 will function properly using a link.
The real problem with either solution is if you have an app that either calls for the
non-installed devel pkg Or has a depend which it expects to use that devel-package and
you end up having a lot of out of sync apps.
In the case of Opera, can't speak for Scirbus, either solution would work, myself
choosing to have having both libs installed.

[newbie] Questions about some BIOS settings....

2002-04-02 Per discussione Ronald J. Hall

Hey all. Just wondering, should video ram and BIOS be so that they are cached
or or not? I've always had them turned off, but recently turned them on. Its
the only thing I changed (besides my new HD) when I had all the troubles with
my Nvidia drivers.

Thanks much!

One reason could be hardware/firmware. I'm using a Soyo k7vta
pro and after the last bios flash upgrade (for Athlon XP support),
the bios setting 4 seconds or instant off (I prefer instant off)
quit working. Button must be held in now for 4 seconds, even if
instant off is selected. I also immediately started experiencing the
problem of re-boots even when 'halt' is chosen, both with Mandrake
8.1 8.2, and Windoze. For me it's just a minor annoyance. If I
choose halt and wait till the system powers down, then hold in the
button for 4 seconds, the system halts.

Google 'bios settings', you'll get plenty of links with
explainations. For more concise/appropriate explaination, go to your
motherboard's web page, your bios' web page, or screen by screen
descriptions are probly also in your mobo's manual.

Normally you shouldn't need or want to cache video or bios.
Before you make bios changes you should understand what they do and
why you would want to change from default. It's also a very good
idea to know where the 'clear cosmos' (cmos) jumper is on your
motherboard and how to use it. Some don't have one, you'll need to
pull the battery for a few minutes. Some bios' can be cleared by
holding down a key during the boot proccess (eg, Insert). Clearing
the cosmos (bios) will revert to all defaults in case you happen to
make the system unbootable.

AFAIK they should be OFF. Apparently they are holdovers from DOS days when
it was necessary to cache some parts of memory b/c DOS couldn't do it
efficiently enough.

For now, I believe all windows versions don't use or reference the bios at

[newbie] Changing mouse actions in MC in LM8.2?

Is there anyway to change the default mouse actions in Midnight Commander in

My Logitech Optical wheel mouse worked fine in LM8.0 in MC -- the scroll

I've been unable to discover how to affect/effect changes in MC.

Other than that, LM8.2 is excellent -- I'm so glad I upgraded.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated,

Do you have the kernel sources installed? You need them to compile the driver.

Also, pctel-0.9.0.tar.gz is the current version of the driver. I'm using the
pctel-0.8.6 driver with 8.2 without any problems. If you're going to compile the
driver, you might as well get one of the two above. The 2.4.7 isn't even listed

You should use su - (no of course)

if you dont use the '-' you won't have good results.

actually having unzip in path does not help if you don't have the

open a terminal and try to execute zip if you get command not

to /usr/bin

samething if you want archiver to be able to open RAR files.

[newbie] unusual partitioning question

2002-04-02 Per discussione Zlatko Savic

hey everyone, i have a weird question and i am trying to ask it without
confusing everyone, even myself.
I installed my MD 7.1 some time ago with the following setup:

/(root) on /dev/hda5
swap on /dev/hda6
/home on /dev/hda7

Now I am trying (if it is possible, that is) to separate my /boot directory
from the /(root) . Basically, without reinstalling, formatting or doing
anything to my system I want to separate /(root) and /boot that are on
/dev/hda5 so that I get something like:

/boot on /dev/hda5
/(root) on /dev/hda6
swap on /dev/hda7
/home on /dev/hda8

I have played around previously with some ideas and they all lead me to a
complete reinstall of the system so that is why I am asking for your help.
The reason for this question is my desire to make a dual linux boot without
completely deleting my current linux install.

Thanks in advance,
Zlatko Savic

You can do it BUT only if you currently have enough non partitioned freespace in which
to create the new /boot partition.
You would even then the new partition table would be dependent upon where the
freespace existed on your hd and how much of it you had.
The only other option is a new install at which point you can delete your current /
and create /boot and /, formatting the 2 new partitions but leaving /home alone.

Well, the simple technique for you would be to put in your install CD
and select EXPERT Update. (Add NO packages unless you think of some you
really want).

It will fuss and cluck for a few minutes figuring out that you don't
want to do very much then go on to Networking (cancel) and summary and
bootloader (cancel) then finally get friendly with X

You want to select something impossible--very high resolution with too
many colors (click the Show All to make it fail) then test it. After
that go to graphic cards and pick FBDev, then settle for no more than
1024x768 in 16 bit depth, and make sure your monitor is within its
frequency range. A 70Hz vertical is better than a 60 (walk toward a
monitor under flourescent lighting and you will see why) if your monitor
will take it.

This will not work at all unless your video card supports framebuffer.
This is easy to tell during install, becausea framebuffer supporting
card will give you a graphical show during package install with a
details button if you want to watch package names fly at you, and the
VGA screen is much lower resolution and offers no graphics, just the
flying names. Also, after install the bootloader will offer a linux and
a linux-nonfb boot if you have framebuffer. THere are a few exceptions
to that, however.

A Matrox Mystique 220 made exclusively for Dell (OEM version) will not
support framebuffer while most other Matroxes do.

A Voodoo 3 2000 will install with framebuffer display but will not
detect as a framebuffer device for a framebuffer enabled kernel, so it
runs on its own driver only.

you can try resising partitions but you must have a backup of your stuff, you
can use partition magic if you have ext2 partitions, there is another product
by acronis (i forget the product name) that i have read does reiserfs, also
there is a linux tool called parted but i've never used it and i don't know

Well, you can do it if they are ext2 filesystems using ext2resize which
is available in tarball form (the rpms are unlikely to install on 7.1,
because rpm has changed versions, and so has glibc and gcc and ...) You
would make a new hda patrition FOLLOWING the resized /.

But for dual-boot you do NOT need a separate /boot

All you need to do is drag the kernel and the initrd
(vmlinuz-(kernelnumber)-(buildinfo) and
initrd.img-(kernelnumber-buildinfo)) from the /boot of the new install
to the /boot of the old install, then use DrakConf to redo your boot
(and the drop down lists will include the new kernel and initrds) making
sure the root identified in the new boot is the root of the new install.
For luck, run /sbin/lilo as root then reboot and you should have the
dual-boot established.

More info on this approach is at

 http://www.mandrakeforum.com/article.php?sid=473lang=en

and I did author that article.

Just about any app can 'print' to a Postscript file, since GNU/Linux's printing
system is based around Postscript. That means you're free to use apps like TEX,
StarOffice/OpenOffice.org, Abiword and Kword. After you've made the Postscript
file, you can use ps2pdf or ps2pdf13 (part of the ghostscript package) to
convert it to PDF.

The GIMP can read and write a large variety of formats. Try to see if the
printing place will accept one of these formats. Some printers may accept
formats like PNG, TIFF and TGA.

My apologies if this has already been mentioned in this thread.

A dumb question, here. Did you back up your home directory before you
started this?

It is possible to manually import all your mail folders individually
using Evolution's import function, but it will require that you move
your evolution directory in ~/ to another name, and then install a
pristine version of Evolution. From there you start the Evolution
import routine and tell it the new name that you gave to the old
evolution directory. This also assumes that your email data files are
not foobarred.

Did you do a tarball of your home directory?
