Hey, (Sorry for late reply, ISP's mailserver didn't want to send my mail) :-( Rich, two suggestions : If you run KDE or GNOME, open Control Center, type in your root-password, and select Boot. Then, select Boot Config. Now, in the upper right corner, click Configure. This opens a dialog-box, called Bootloader Main Options. Here, you can select the boot device. I guess you can choose whatever here. If still in trouble, post two files to the list : 1. : /etc/lilo.conf 2. : /etc/fstab I'm not sure that I understand the second part of your answer. Where exactly do I put those statements? In the boot loader? This meant that you should send a copy of the files named lilo.conf and fstab which can both be found in the /etc directory to this mailing list. Copy their contents to a mail and send it here. Hey, (Sorry for late reply, ISP's mailserver didn't want to send my mail) :-( RAR format is an archiving format that is very popular in europe japan. mostly popular with Warez ppl too b/c its algorithms compress better than .zip Please just don't make it sound like an evil warez dood program. It's a great compression utility ever since... well, it was before '96 that I remember it was better than ARJ or ZIP and competed with UC2. it was invented in Japan IIRC too. AFAIK it was programmed by Eugene Roshal, who I think I recall is Ukrainian, but I might be wrong. The official site ( www.rarsoft.com ) itself is run by a company in Finland... well, I don't think there is anything Japanese about it. ;-) Bye Roman Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] OT: no windows
Hey, (Sorry for late reply, ISP's mailserver didn't want to send my mail) :-( I was looking for a cheap laptop to install Mandrake. Unlike home made towers, it is quite difficult to buy parts, so I had a look at the net in order to find computers without windows. I found an interesting home page: http://www.bestpricecomputers.ltd.uk/products/nowindows.htm At the beginning of the page, they give a few links related to Microsoft's unfair practices, with sounds good at a first glance. But in the paragraph Not to worry, I'll install Windows myself, they say: We do not ship PCs with blank hard disks.. When reading a bit further, you understand that this means, we will not ship without windows. AFAIK you can uninstall Windows, remove it from all storage media and give the installation back CD to the retailer for a full refund. It is in Micros~1 Windows' EULA. There has been a bit of fuss about it maybe a year ago IIRC when Linux users in Australia (again IIRC) wanted to use Linux and didn't want Windows preinstalled and they found this in the EULA so they went back to the store and got the refund. Now I hope I am not mixing another story with this but I think a similar thing happened later in the US and the Linux users organised a group trip to return Windows and Micros~1 welcomed them with a Microsoft greets the Linux community banner. Well, this everything is IIRC, so anyone please jump in and correct me. Thanks Roman Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Hi, (Sorry for late reply, ISP's mailserver didn't want to send my mail) :-( One way to do it is to right-click on the icon and then click on properties. Pick up a new icon and it's done. I've received 3 identical answers, but it doesn't work here! Nothing happens when I click on the icon in the dialog box. I can change the icon by right clicking and then selecting Edit File Type. Unfortunately, this also changes all of the other, similar, non-embedded icons on the desktop. Hey, What else do I want to know? Everything ;) Seriously, though, I've seen mention of rar a few times on this list and it started to bug me that I didn't know what it was. I've never needed it, but a google search for 'rar linux' turns up some hits, including one for a rar utility for lniux you can get from cnet. It's shareware, though, and the author wants $35. That's too much for a simple archiving utility. There is a Freeware version of rar for *nix called unrar: UNRAR 2.50 freeware Copyright (c) 1993-99 Eugene Roshal UnRAR can only unpack RAR archives. RK Hi everyone, RK I've seen a user having the same problem as me - when shutting down RK the computer, no matter if using shutdown -h now, poweroff or halt -p RK (yeah, haven't tried telinit 0 ;-) the computer goes through the usual RK shutdown process as in MDK8.1 and then at Power down. it just turns RK off the disks and stops. It should turn off the computer but it RK doesn't. RK I haven't changed a thing since 8.1 and even PnP OS is set to No if RK that matters. There doesn't seem to be a visible difference in the RK scripts in /etc/rc.d/ which are probably responsible for shutdown (as RK far as I figured). For more concise/appropriate explaination, go to your motherboard's web page, your bios' web page, or screen by screen descriptions are probly also in your mobo's manual. Normally you shouldn't need or want to cache video or bios. Before you make bios changes you should understand what they do and why you would want to change from default. It's also a very good idea to know where the 'clear cosmos' (cmos) jumper is on your motherboard and how to use it. Some don't have one, you'll need to pull the battery for a few minutes. Some bios' can be cleared by holding down a key during the boot proccess (eg, Insert). It will fuss and cluck for a few minutes figuring out that you don't want to do very much then go on to Networking (cancel) and summary and bootloader (cancel) then finally get friendly with X You want to select something impossible--very high resolution with too many colors (click the Show All to make it fail) then test it. After that go to graphic cards and pick FBDev, then settle for no more than 1024x768 in 16 bit depth, and make sure your monitor is within its frequency range. A 70Hz vertical is better than a 60 (walk toward a monitor under flourescent lighting and you will see why) if your monitor will take it. This will not work at all unless your video card supports framebuffer. This is easy to tell during install, becausea framebuffer supporting card will give you a graphical show during package install with a details button if you want to watch package names fly at you, and the VGA screen is much lower resolution and offers no graphics, just the flying names. Also, after install the bootloader will offer a linux and a linux-nonfb boot if you have framebuffer. THere are a few exceptions to that, however. A Matrox Mystique 220 made exclusively for Dell (OEM version) will not support framebuffer while most other Matroxes do. A Voodoo 3 2000 will install with framebuffer display but will not detect as a framebuffer device for a framebuffer enabled kernel, so it runs on its own driver only. Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com Well, you can do it if they are ext2 filesystems using ext2resize which is available in tarball form (the rpms are unlikely to install on 7.1, because rpm has changed versions, and so has glibc and gcc and ...) You would make a new hda patrition FOLLOWING the resized /. But for dual-boot you do NOT need a separate /boot All you need to do is drag the kernel and the initrd (vmlinuz-(kernelnumber)-(buildinfo) and initrd.img-(kernelnumber-buildinfo)) from the /boot of the new install to the /boot of the old install, then use DrakConf to redo your boot (and the drop down lists will include the new kernel and initrds) making sure the root identified in the new boot is the root of the new install. For luck, run /sbin/lilo as root then reboot and you should have the dual-boot established. More info on this approach is at http://www.mandrakeforum.com/article.php?sid=473lang=en and I did author that article. Civileme Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Is there a way of generating compatible files in some way - we may need to pass the file back forth in email. Its been a great discussion... thanks for the many useful ideas and contributions. I am still not sure where to start. LaTeX sounds great... but something to grow into, and i may. Does it layout graphics? Right now I's like to start with something less steep. Ian Clatworthy's sdf sounds useful to create the files - and pdf format sounds like it might have to be the way to go - proprietary though it is. Which leaves me wondering which ap to use. Kword (thanks Robin) seems a possibility, I have version 1.1 - crashed several times on me and seems not ready. However if someone reports that a brochure with images that bleed out to the edge can be produced in a file the commercial printer can use I'll persevere. I get the sense that no word processor would be up to it. The brochure i have is in Word now but that is really not right, though useful to as an initial step in getting the wording and pix right. As a matter of interest the brochure will be the main flyer for http://www.lyfordtreks.co.nz so you can get an idea of what might be needed. ~ Steve wrote: I hope it changes as the high end multimedia people have adopted Linux, now Alias Wavefront Maya is available for Linux. What are these things? ~ I am still looking for a simple publishing ap that will allow me to layout a document... what is available? Walter Just about any app can 'print' to a Postscript file, since GNU/Linux's printing system is based around Postscript. That means you're free to use apps like TEX, StarOffice/OpenOffice.org, Abiword and Kword. After you've made the Postscript file, you can use ps2pdf or ps2pdf13 (part of the ghostscript package) to convert it to PDF. The GIMP can read and write a large variety of formats. Try to see if the printing place will accept one of these formats. Some printers may accept formats like PNG, TIFF and TGA. My apologies if this has already been mentioned in this thread. -- Sridhar Dhanapalan I don't use a marketing eye, I simply don't care. There are others who do, I'll let them worry about it. -- Linus Torvalds Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Running LM8.1 on a dialup with 256MB ram and KDE. Roly A dumb question, here. Did you back up your home directory before you started this? It is possible to manually import all your mail folders individually using Evolution's import function, but it will require that you move your evolution directory in ~/ to another name, and then install a pristine version of Evolution. From there you start the Evolution import routine and tell it the new name that you gave to the old evolution directory. This also assumes that your email data files are not foobarred. Did you do a tarball of your home directory? You may need to do a complete rebuild on the rpm database--not the usual rpm --rebuild but the one in the archives of the cooker list. Civileme Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Switching sound from OSS to Alsa
I guess I'll just go back to the oss drivers and get the 4.1 at least. There's no use bitching I guess. I'm really just waiting for good SB Audigy support since that's what I was gonna get with these speakers until I read that there is still work to be done on the driver. The setup does appear to be some what bastardized especially since the C-Media's own driver setup doesn't have my jack configuration even listed. Oh well, it still pisses off my roomates on the floor below when i listen to some Foghat. :) Tom Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
