[newbie] No Sound in Kobo Deluxe in KDE M10 Official 2nd Post

2004-12-06 Per discussione Phil Savoie
Hello All,

I am wondering why I don't have sound in this particular game. Sound works on
this Dell Inspiron 7500 laptop using the snd-es1968 driver for the ES1978
Maestro 2E built-in sound card in KDE my gui of choice and in other games.

I did, on install, use the Alt1 kernel so I am using the
kernel.h-2.4.25-2mdk as with the 2.6 kernel I can get sound *or* pcmcia
networking. I get one or the other but never did I ever get both.

Hopefully someone could shed light on this.

Regards,

Phil

All is well. Apparently the icon showed up all by itself after a reboot I had

sound working in all apps with the noted exception of KD.

[newbie] Verbatim USB Drive 512MB

2004-09-28 Per discussione Phil Savoie
Hi All,

I can't seem to get the USB drive/stick to be writable. the fstab entry for
this is:

none /mnt/removable supermount
dev=/dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1,fs=ext2:vfat,exec,--,umask=000,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,dev,codepage=850,suid,kudzu

0 0

The umask is set to 000 but when I try to write as a user or as root I get:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] removable]# pwd
/mnt/removable
[EMAIL PROTECTED] removable]# cp /etc/fstab .
cp: cannot create regular file `./fstab': Read-only file system

Why is this? It's awfully frustrating especially since it was recognized and
configure during the boot process.

Any insight would definatley relieve my stress level

Thank you

What's the output of lspci? Does it show a Broadcom ethernet device?

Also watch when the system boots. On first boot before the bootloader you
should see a screen listing the devices on the pci bus. There should be a
network contoler listed with its interupt (IRQ).

If you don't see a network controller then it may be disabled, check the cmos
setup to ensure it is enabled (on my A7V8X it can not be disabled in the
setup).

do you run windows (ugh), if so, does the ethernet controller work?

Surfing led me to understand that:

1.BCM4401 nic with 2.6 kernel requires b44 driver.
2.Distros other than mdk all have 2.6 w/b44 driver.

 Conclusion: Mdk makes you stronger.

And since my only prob is net access, and I didn't put in a floppy,
simple logistics are going to piss me off too.

I feel another good day coming on.

Yep, ran win2k for over a year before a bad fan fried the cpu last
weekend. I just replaced the cpu with a 2.7g screamer and put a
real operating system on the drive.

I'm dl'ing 10 community now. The driver was discussed in cooker a

installing a floppy in the computer.

You didn't mention which version of windows you are running.

WinXP, 2K, NT - Boot from the Windows CD, Choose Rescue mode and go to
console. Type fixmbr and allow it to recreate the windows bootloader.
  Remove CD and restart.

Win98, ME, and other 16 bit versions, Boot from the CD or boot floppy,
get to a command prompt and type fdisk /mbr (IIRC) and that should
recreate the windows boot sector on the hard drive.

You will, however, find a soft-link to the /etc/mandrake-release as

Open a term and cd into your /etc/ dir and you'll find it there.

[newbie] tulip ethernet card woes...

2004-04-02 Per discussione Phil Vossler
Does anyone know of any issues surrounding use of the tulip ethernet card
driver under the default 2.6 kernel in Mandrake 10? The ethernet card has
worked fine with the tulip driver under 9.2.

I'm using drakconnect and it is at the select network interface to configure
stage that Drakconnect refuses to detect the ethernet card at all (It does
show the integrated Broadcom NIC on the motherboard). If the tulip driver is
chosen manually, drakconnect refuses to accept it and returns me to the
select network interface to configure stage again.

As a test I installed a 2.4 kernel, and drakconnect works just fine and allows
me to configure my card but of course I want 2.6!

any help appreciated...

[newbie] M10C IRQ 11 and PCMCIA

2004-03-25 Per discussione Phil Savoie
Hi All,

Awhile back I had asked this question and didn't really recieve any response
that I can remember. My setup is an Inspiron 7500 Dell Laptop using a
Netgear FA-511 cardbus PCMCIA adapter.

Normally when I install I do a network install so I am perplexed by what is
happening. After the net install using the Netgear card in the pcmcia slot,
on reboot, the cards lights are on indicating a connection. On further
inspection there is no dhcp setting set even though I set this on install.
In the wizzard, it shows the same driver that was used in previous versions
of Mandrake; i.e., 9.1, 9, 8.2 etc, and it worked great on those distros!

If I unplug the the card and plug it back in again nothing happens -- no
lights etc. Also, on boot up I see a disabling IRQ 11 message around when
the pcmcia/eth0 setup occurs. I have never seen this message in M9.2 and
earlier.

Could anyone please help me determine the the heck is going on as to why the
pcmcia service/eth0 device is not playing nice?

Thanks in advance,

Phil

[newbie] Xnest and Solaris

2004-03-18 Per discussione Phil Savoie
Hi All,

I have been tasked with a project to come up with 2 day intro to unix course.
I would like to use xnest and solaris/mandrake/redhat screenshots. However,
xnest does work beautifully linux to linux but not in Solaris.

What happens is after typing in:

 Xnest -query sparky :1

I get the gui login screen but then upon logging in, the Solaris box running
CDE *appears* to log in but then reverts back to the gui login screen.

I am hoping that someone out there would be able to toss out some ideas on how
to fix this.

Thanks in advance,

Hi Margot,

Hopefully you can get a terminal going after logging in as a user. In that
terminal you can run su - type in the root password when asked. Then type
menudrake.
As the menudrake program starts you will be asked to choose from from root
menu and system menu (users). Choose system. Let the program build/sort
the menu then save.
Inside the the menudrake program you will see at the top right 2 radio buttons
indicating system/root choose root this time then again let the program
build/sort menus then save. Ignore the errors about DCOP server in term
window where you started the menudrake program.

Once this is done, your menus should be fine.

Hope this helps and I apologize for not going into more detail in my previous

Do you know about vnc? Mandrake includes it and you would have to set up

utilize your desktop as if you were sitting in front of it. I'm assuming
that vncserver can be installed on Solaris.

Hi, Phil. Don't be put off by urpmi - use the gui. Mandrake Control
Center Software Management (in 9.1 - it will be something similar
in 9.2). It will list all the apps that it knows are available to
you, which will be the ones on your disks. You can get more by using
other sources - this is easiest done by googling for 'easy urpmi' and
 following the instructions.

In the installable list, look for the package (I think it is called
v4lin) and it will automatically take care of any dependencies.

 Anne

Well, I took a look and v4lin or any combination thereof wasn't found.
According to http://bytesex.org/v4l/build.html the 2.5x kernels has what I
need to get this going. I appreciate and thank Anne for her suggestion,
however, if the program wasn't found I think I still may need to upgrade the
kernel. Anybody willing to lend a hand?

Thanks again and regards,

Phil

Phil, I don't know what's happening, but something is. I had v4lin

I re-installed 9.1, and your post reminded me that I hadn't installed

if it is I can't find it.

Anyone know anything?

Is kernel-2.4.22.26 good enough? If so these two pages should give you
  what you need:

  http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/kernelupdate.php
  http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/advisories/advisory.php?name=MDKSA-2004:
 00 1

This is the latest kernel produced by Mandrake. If you need a later one
you'll need to look elsewhere, and others can advise you where.

v4l can/will be loaded into a mandrake kernel if you have a v4l device
found during install, or when installing xawtv (and other assorted
 programs) using bttv modules.
Roger that!

I believe it's a i586/i686 issue. RH is compiled for i386.
Mandrake for i586, with only a few libs where it shows some
benefit, compiled for i686 (look in Mandrake's /lib/i686/).

Problem is Cyrix, even the newer VIA-C(yrix)3 processors
report themselves as i686, but are only marginally i586
compliant, and even retain some i486 legacy.

I believe this mismatch is solved in 9.2, but check the eratta

IIRC, 9.0 was the last to be fooled by Cyrix cpu's.

 I couldn't get either 9.0 or 9.1 onto a Cyrix/IBM 266 box. I found a
used amd cpu to replace it, and everything was fine after that.

 Anne

Hello Anne and Tom,

Thank you both for your responses. I guess if I want this box to be current
in the form of os, then I will have to upgrade the cpu. Anne, I have no
documentation for this machine and was wondering if you can remember what
type of socket the cpu uses. I was at the emachine site and was not able to
find any documentation as in user guide for this etower 366c other than basic
specs.

responsible for making my screen go blank every 60 seconds or so and
requiring me to use my password to get back in again. _very_

looking at the original post :

http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/1997/debian-user-199711/msg01752.html

and see if anything looks obviously out of sync. (the backslashes at
the end of some lines are escape characters that tell the shell that
this is actually one long line but has been broken up for readability or
to fit on the screen or page better.)

I've just posted the scripts here :

If such a thing comes to pass there would be reason for M$ to be worried. Two
of it's main FUD attacks will be gone. One that there is no support from a

The other thing is the sense of inevitability as Linux moves into the server

Hat has to compete in that space. That doesn' t mean that they aren't good
competitors it's just that Red Hat has a pocket full of thousand dollar bills

Something good will come of all this if these big companies don't forget the

Subject: [newbie] mirror speed checker

Hi all.

Here's a bash script I found looking for something

that would poll

(ping) Mandrake mirrors and return the result rated

by speed like

apt-netselect does in Debian. I hacked it up a bit

to make it

work with
the mirror list (README_mirrors) and I'm no guru

so.

I probably should've tested it before my orginal post
to this thread. Oh well. I've run into a problem.
This is what I get when I run the script:

tmp]$ sh cheker README.mirrors
Testing tr: invalid option -- n
Try `tr --help' for more information.
cheker: line 69: syntax error near unexpected token
`newline'
cheker: line 69: `then grep rtt
$tmpdir/ping$$_$h | cut -d/ -f 5 | tr \n'
This is rather confusing since tr has the valid option
of \n. Here's a copy of the script below,
TIA,

Tango

Thanks for trying it out. It worked fine for me on my 9.2 box - some
minor erroneous ping results but otherwise very helpful. I'm sorry,
like I said, I'm no guru. I had to change a couple of the grep lines
because, I think, they referred to ping message lines from a different
ping than mine. Try pinging something and look at the messages it
returns. It should say something like 'round trip time'. I think that
is what 'rtt' refers to here. Then you have to change the grep
expression to match. If your grep doesn't have a match for 'rtt' it'll
probably just die because it seems as each command must complete without
error or the following commands make no sense. Upon closer inspection I
think I posted the original version and not the one I used. I'll boot
up Mandrake to see and get back to you.

If you want gaim to work with msn, then Texstar has gaim-0.71 for Mandrake
9.1, and Charles Edwards has gaim-0.71 for Mandrake 9.2/Cooker
http://www.eslrahc.com/
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/contrib/texstar/mandrake/9.1/rpms/

Texstar is urpmi enabled. For Charles' package just click on it using
konqueror and the magic of gurpmi will take over.

[newbie] mirror speed checker

2003-11-12 Per discussione Phil Newcombe
Hi all.

Here's a bash script I found looking for something that would poll
(ping) Mandrake mirrors and return the result rated by speed like
apt-netselect does in Debian. I hacked it up a bit to make it work with
the mirror list (README_mirrors) and I'm no guru so.

The author has a version 2 that is easy to find on google but this one
worked for me. The mirror list is below the script (130 lines) - I
copied the Mandrake web page and cut it up in a text editor (in Mandrake
9.2 :-) ).

Re: [newbie] /images/usb.imb - ISO? [solved]

2002-04-19 Per discussione Phil R Lawrence

I had asked:
I have a Thinkpad X20 with USB CD-ROM and *no* floppy drive. Mandrake
8.2 ISO CD 1 boots fine, but doesn't come with drivers for continuing
 with the USB CD-ROM drive.

On my desktop machine I used the included rawwritewin.exe to create a
floppy with the usb.img file. No system files seemed to appear on the
floppy. When I attempt to burn a bootable CD it prompts me for a system
floppy... I insert this one and it does not recognize it as valid.

How can I turn this floppy image into an ISO image for my CD?

My Windows CD-Writer was braindead... probably thought it wasn't a bootable
floppy because it lacked COMMAND.COM... :-( Had a friend with linux burn the
floppy img file into a bootable CD. Installation worked like a charm.

See http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Bootdisk-HOWTO/cd-roms.html for instructions on
turning the floppy .img file into an El Torito CD.

[newbie] More hardisk space

2001-05-30 Per discussione Phil Curtis

Hello all,

I used to use Novell Netware and I could used to be able to merge two disk
volumes (disk partions±) together, to create a large volume (i.e. 10gb on
HD1 + 20Gb on HD2) could give me a 30Gb volume.

Is it possible to do the same with Linux? What I mean I create a directory
called /work and then I mount two 40gb discs in this partition to give me
80Gb of space in the /work directory, or something similar.

Also, how can I turn a directory / file stucture into an ISO image.

Also, is it possible to mount to ISO images in the same directory. For
example I create the directory /Mandrake and the I mount the two ISO images
for LM8 in the SAME directory?

Thanks All.

Depending on your location, you'll find that the following may or may
not apply for roadrunner:
1) they use the MAC address in the negotiation. So if you used a
Windows machine with a network card, you will have to use the same
network card in your Linux box.
2) they sometimes assign you a hostname and that hostname/MAC address
combo is used to authenticate who you are. If you had to enter a
hostname for Windows, you will have to assign that same hostname to your
Linux box. I'd assume that you would have already done this, so it
probably does not apply to you.

Smile, at least you don't have PPPoE.

Phil; I caught both your emails, so I put them together in this reply,
because I have questions for you about both of them. This second Realtek
nic,...are you saying that you've used it inWindows to connect thru the
cablemodem to your ISP, and it worked? Or are you saying that you've used it
in Windows for something else, and it worked? If it worked to connect you in
Windows (to your ISP that is) then the NIC is not your problem. Whether in
Linux or Windows, the principles of TCP/IP are the same. Therefore, your
problem is somewhere in Linux. You're probably using DHCP in Windows to get
a dynamic IP number from your ISP each time you connect. If you can't do the
same in Linux, then DHCP isn't runnin,or isn't running properly in Linux. If
you're NOT using the NIC in Windows to connect to your ISP, but maybe to
connect a second PC to this one, then I'd say that you should use this first
NIC to connect to your ISP, and get another one to connect to the other PC.
I know this is confusing, but I'm trying to be specific with insufficient
info.

By the way, /etc/dhcp , contains the DHCP Daemon (think executable file)
that runs your DHCP "service". In other words, it's fine. But check the
permissions on it. If you can't execute it when needed, your not going to
get anywhere on the Internet. Change to root, and check the permissions on
that file. Make sure that all the "Read" and "Execute" boxes are checked
off. If it can't start, it can't get an IP number from your ISP. Have fun,
Gotta go.

by any chance, have you changed your network card that connects to your

is sometimes provided by the MAC address of your network card, and sometimes
by the MAC address of your cablemodem. If you've changed your NIC, the new

[newbie] Mandrake 7.2 and upgrade RAM problem

2001-01-29 Per discussione phil

I just built another linux box for my mother ;o)
I bought the parts they kicked me down a free 32MB of PC-100 ram

Now, her A7V box uses the PC-133 Ram and this free stick is PC-100,

I decided I want the 32MB stick for MY asus P5A-B SS7 AT (form) mainboard
I have 128MB in my P5A-B currently, so I put that stick in and the memory says
163840k acording to my bios.

Then I try to boot and I get kernel panic. (no init levels left)
I tried
linux init 3 mem=160M
linux
linux init 3
linux mem=160M

I ended up taking the chip out.

Also as a side note: I notice that windows98 craps out with that chip in
there too. it won't start in any mode at all

I noticed in all these other discussions that someone said to put this in
the /etc/lilo.conf and run /sbin/lilo

append=" mem=127M hdd=ide-scsi"

first off, my original install[s] and update[s] and upgrade[s] all detected
the 128MB no problem and I didn't have that line in the lilo.conf

second, did someone make a typo in the above saying 127M instead of 128M?

third, I wonder if i add 128 + 32 = 160 and then my /etc/lilo.conf should
look like this:

boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
default=linux
keytable=/boot/us.klt

and last: what EXACT steps do I need to do to add this extra ram?

don't you give it another try by reinstalling and choose the

Sorry that can't be done, because
1. The First thing that is asked is keyboard, then which partitions do you
want. Wipe DIsk, use existing, or expert. I ALWAYS use expert.
Choice of using anything other than DiskDrake is not available, choice of NOT
formatting partitions is also not available. Choice if installation class
is NOT available, choice of what the system is used for is NOT available.

Note: even so, I have no problem with this formatting because I always back
up my /home - /root to a winblows partition before I start tweeking on the
system. SO, all I have to do is re-copy my .bashrc, bookmarks, firewall
scripts etc back over. It's relatively painless. Cept I hate the fact that
ipchains is never installed.

The thing I DO have a problem with is the fact that I am NEVER prompted with
the following menus:

Customized

Furthermore I am NEVER prompted with:
What is your system used for:

Clear out all the current Mandrake partiitions
and start anew, about 100 MB for 'swap'
and 1.5GB (min) for /.If your Mandrake is 7.2 ( 2 CD), use perhaps
 2 GB for /

Um, that's all great advice, in fact if this was version 7.1 that would be
perfect advice. In this case, it does not apply. I gave quite a bit MORE
space to Linux. (athough maybe my /home is a tad bit too small and I may add
another 2G from windows to it, still, over time, I have decided my
partitions are as follows:

there's 260MB allocated to "SWAP"
I calculated it like this
2*128MB of system ram = 256 rounded up to an even 260.

I'm just a newbie to Linux too so I can't help much in troubleshooting.
All I can say is use care during
 the installation.
I've tried everything in the Book that comes with the "COMPLETE" version 7.2
There's only 1 class install, the one Mandrake itself picks.

Now then, I have just built a NEW A7V + K7 800MHz + 128MB PC-133 ram, and the

Another thing that isn't prompted is

do you want to wipe your /tmp on boot option y/n=
I have my /tmp on a seperate 233MB partiton and YES i want it wiped!!!

another thing that isn't prompted is
do you want to install a printer?

another thing that isn't prompted is the choice of EACH package (over 1000)

okay, another thing, the development stuff is either uncompatable or screwed
up. No Kdevelop, no KdeStudio, a bunch of libraries are missing, the QT and
KDE paths have to be manually set or you can't compile anything.

ON the plus side, I like the fact that most of those webserver[s] and
exploitable stuff isn't installed by default. I like having to manually add

 Actually, I prefer 7.0 to 7.2...easier installation.

 Good luck.
I didn't like 7.0 It had a lot of bugs. 7.1 was great! but I had to have
that konqueror.

another thing I hate, is searching for help on

  How can i install ppp

This is interesting. Did your copy also come from Wal-Mart?

I have a boxed version of 7.2 Complete which, I'm told, may not be so
complete. Among other things, it's KDE 2.0 is not the final version but a
Beta. Apparently, a disk is now on it's way to amend. Thing is, I also
got the message that it couldn't find the ppp daemon (pppd) and that I
should install it. I dug out RpmDrake and found the files related to pppd
(there were 2, I think) and prepared to install them along with
Enlightenment and the parts of Gnome that weren't installed initially. It
kept telling me that it couldn't communicate with the CD ROM (though it's
actually a CD-RW and there are 2 of them in Device Manager though only one
on my machine.. in addition to a CD-ROM which appears as it should in
Device Manager). That's another issue to swim through. I may also have a
 Winmodem. Rats.

In this version of LM 7.2, the KDE is in Beta as I say. I have 2 users
set
up: "dave" and "root". The kicker in root works fine and looks just as
it
did in the screen shots on the web tutorials. However, there is no kicker
loaded (and a message telling me so) in dave. (Side note: When does a
single user of a machine use root and, in this case, dave?) Apparently,
this is one of the issues that the update disk they're sending will solve.

More frustratingly, one of many, many points of difference between the
software and the manual included with it is illustrated on page 64 of the
manual. In that illustration, the text in the window (of available
packages from which to choose to install) shows KDE and quite a number of
others which are not evident in my installation screen and the ones both
(the manual and my software version) share in common are in a different
order. The first two times I installed Linux (never used it before Friday
night), I selected all the available options but 2; one on personal
finances and another for Palm Pilot device interfaces, neither of which I
have. g About 75% of the data in this 4 minute install came from the
first disk with the remainder coming from the second (of the 4 in the
 package).

Below that window is a button to install all components. That choice does
install KDE and Gnome (but only 2 other desktop environments, not
Enlightenment, BlackBox or any others that looked interesting in the
tutorials on the website). Strangely, all but the last 10 seconds of data
of a 6 minute install came from the first disk.

If the manual said a particular choice detailed there might not be a
choice
for either recommended or custom modes, it was not not available in this
package's custom instalation. Even if the manual warned only that it may
not be an available choice in recommended mode installations, it was not
available in the custom mode of this early 7.2 version of LM. In fact,
there were only 2 choices: 300MB minimal and custom installations. There
 are many other differences, too.

What I'm going to do is to just play with what I have for now. As soon as
I can get a fully functional copy of less dubious integrity, I'll work
more
diligently to make my hardware work. With this arrangement, I am thinking
it futile. Maybe what I'll do to pacify myself in the meanwhile is to buy
a modem (to replace my 33.6 winmodem) that is possibly capable of faster
download speeds, set up my download manager in Win98 and download the ISO
images for the disks from the web. I am glad to have the manual and the
books and so forth on the other 2 disks but darn-it, it sure would be nice
to have a copy that works.

I am glad to have gotten this far in one weekend, though. I delayed Linux
for close to 2 years, unsure that I'd be able to "do" it. I've read the
Re
Hat newslist from time to time and it appeared as though people, much
brighter than I about computers, struggled to install and configure it.
Universally, people seem broadly satisfied with the system and so I figure
it'll be worth the effort. I was surprised at how easily I could run a
dual OS drive, the choice made with Grub at boot. I did have some
partitioning to do both before (with Partition Magic) and during
installation but they went without a hitch. I see no evidence in Windows
 that

[newbie] I found it! CD-RW problem solved

2001-01-17 Per discussione Phil Murphy

I was composing a long letter to the list asking for help, listing all the
steps I had done. (I'll include it anyways as it may help someone else in the
same boat) Just before posting, I noticed that the instructions for creating
the link from /dev/cdrom to /dev/scd0 differed on www.mandrakeuser.org from
what I had read in all the previous locations. The command that finally
worked was:

 ln -sf /dev/scd0 /dev/cdrom

Whereas the command that had not worked was:

cd /dev rm cdrom ln -s scd0 cdrom

The only difference I can see in the commands is the -sf rather than -s,
although the second command requests confirmation. Any ideas here, or are
they the same?

Is this CD-RW problem something that can be automated since LM does pick up
that my hdc is a cd-rw? Once again, thanks to the list for all the info that
is of so much help.

THe following is the text I was going to send:

I have been using Mandrake since 7.0, and have upgraded to 7.1, and recently
to 7.2, and have been thoroughly impressed with Linux. I have also tried
Peanut, Phatlinux, Red Hat, Caldera, and some mini-distros.

Here is my problem. I just traded in my cd-rom for a cd-rw, :) , but am not
able to access it in LInux. I have been reading all the HOW-TO's and FAQ's,
and have been following the threads on this list.

I have been able to get LM to recognize my LG CD-RW as a scsi device:

cdrecord -scanbus

Using libscg version 'schily-0.1'
scsibus0:

0,4,0 4) *
0,5,0 5) *
0,6,0 6) *
0,7,0 7) *

I have the following ines in /etc/modules.conf:

alias net-pf-4 ipx
pre-install pcmcia_core /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start
alias usb-interface usb-uhci
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
alias block-major-11 scsi_hostadapter
pre-install plip modprobe parport_pc ; echo 7 /proc/parport/0/irq
alias scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi
alias sound-slot-0 sb
options sound dmabuf=1
alias midi opl3
options opl3 io=0x388

options ide-cd ignore=hdc# tell the ide-cd module to ignore hdc
alias scd0 sr_mod# load sr_mod upon access of scd0

I had added the recommended 3 additional lines, but then my cdrom was not
recognized. I had appended them to the bottom of the file:

#pre-install ide-scsi modprobe imm# uncomment for some ZIP drives only
pre-install sg modprobe ide-scsi # load ide-scsi before sg
pre-install sr_mod modprobe ide-scsi # load ide-scsi before sr_mod
pre-install ide-scsi modprobe ide-cd # load ide-cd before ide-scsi

cat /etc/fstab returns:

[newbie] Time management

2001-01-14 Per discussione Phil

Hello,

I'm looking for a tool to track my internet connection time. I want an
accumulated total time.

The task seems simple enough so surly a tool already exists. And, if one
doesn't then I could probably write my own if I knew how to access kppp's
connection time variable.

I selected the DC 280 from the dropdown list. Not many of the functions of

camera to work with the usb port instead of the serial port!

[newbie] Clearing a print job

2001-01-05 Per discussione Phil

Hello,

While trying to set-up my printer under Gimp the printer runs amok if I
select a printer, or an option, from the list that is not compatible with my
own (Epson colour 680).

My question is, how do I clear the print job without having to reboot? This
works but it soon becomes a real pain. Even after I have cancelled the print
job under Kups and deleted the files in /var/spool/cups the printer continues
to print meaningless characters until the system is rebooted.

An updated Gimp printer database would be a step in the right direction.

[newbie] Kodak DC3400 camera

2001-01-04 Per discussione Phil

I recently bought a Kodak DC3400 digital camera which works well under
Windows but, not surprisingly, I haven't been able to use it with Linux and
gphoto.

I tried selecting several different cameras from the list in gphoto but
nothing seems to work. Has anyone had any success with this camera?

[newbie] How may I use two mice?

2000-12-18 Per discussione Phil R Lawrence

I want to use two mice at once (one is a touchpad in my keyboard).

Currently, DrakConf reports them as:
Device: /dev/psaux
Bus Type: PS/2
and
Device: /dev/ttyS0
Bus Type: Serial

My XF86Config-4 currently says:
Section "InputDevice"

Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol""IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

EndSection

This results in the serial mouse working. How may I use both mice?

Thanks,

[newbie] kdevelop 1.3 not working

2000-12-14 Per discussione Phil

Hello,

I have kdevelop-1.3-linux-i386 which is a precompiled version that uses a
shell script to start it. Kdevelop starts but fails to build any project
types.

During the create project phase I'm told that there is an error in
configure.in and that the qt 2.2.1 libraries have not been found (I have qt
2.2.2).

If I try to run the created project an error dialog says "makefile is not
found".

I suspect that the problem due to an incompatibility between the system used
to build the precompiled version and Mandrake 7.2, but I could be
wrong.

Can anyone offer any suggestions?

[newbie] Adding SCSI

2000-12-08 Per discussione Phil Garrett

Ok, this is driving me nuts. How do I add a SCSI card to an existing 7.2
install?

I'm trying to add an Adaptec 1542c but also have a 1522a that I can
try. The system simply does not recognize the card. I've even tryd
compiling a kernel that has the aha1542 module in it but no go.

I need to add this card so I can attach an external scsi tape drive to the
system.

[newbie] Strange RPM problems

2000-11-30 Per discussione Phil Garrett

Ok, long story short. I'm trying to add an Adaptec 1542c SCSI card to an
existing mdk7.2 system. I want to recompile the kernel to include SCSI
support. I go to install the kernel-sources rpm and am told I need to
install dev86. I rpm -i dev86, it runs for about 30-40 seconds. I then
get the messages VM: killing process rpm. killed.

rpm -q dev86 says it is not installed.

Huh? Any ideas on whats happening?

[newbie] Linux Mandrake Version 7.2 install

2000-11-29 Per discussione Phil Farnham

I have spent a week downloading Linux Mandrake Version
7.2.iso which I haveduly used to create a bootable
cd-rom.

I have tried it on 2 AMD 500 machines and a Celeron 600
without success.
On one of the AMDs it just locks up part way through
the white letters onblack screen boot.On the other AMD it gets as far as
initialising CD ROM and then locks upOn the Celeron it did not get as
far as this until I made the cd the masterdrive and then it gets as far as
Initialising CD ROM before freezing withthe message:Kernel panic VFS;
unable to mount root fs on 1:03I had previously installed version
7 on the Celeron. This was successful apart from the cd drive not being
recognised and desktop loading up slowly and I (mistakenly) thought that
upgrading to version 7.2 would solve these problems!
Please help Phil

open webmin and go to sendmail look in the upper right corner of that page
and you should see a listing call "Module Config" once you've click'd this
look at the listing called "full path to sendmail aliases file" most times
this is set to automatic. if automatic is selected and it still does not see
the files then add the full path there /etc/mail that's where all mine are.

You should'nt have to touch the rest of the entrys in the list unless they
are all in differant directorys

Your problem is going to be 1 of 3 places "relay" is incorrect, "local" shows
nothing besides "localhost" and or "masquerading" was incorrectly set. You
should be able to ck these with webmin
