[newbie] No Sound in Kobo Deluxe in KDE M10 Official 2nd Post
Hello All, I am wondering why I don't have sound in this particular game. Sound works on this Dell Inspiron 7500 laptop using the snd-es1968 driver for the ES1978 Maestro 2E built-in sound card in KDE my gui of choice and in other games. I did, on install, use the Alt1 kernel so I am using the kernel.h-2.4.25-2mdk as with the 2.6 kernel I can get sound *or* pcmcia networking. I get one or the other but never did I ever get both. Hopefully someone could shed light on this. Regards, Phil Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com Join the Club : http://www.mandrakeclub.com

What's the output of lspci? Does it show a Broadcom ethernet device? Also watch when the system boots. On first boot before the bootloader you should see a screen listing the devices on the pci bus. There should be a network contoler listed with its interupt (IRQ). If you don't see a network controller then it may be disabled, check the cmos setup to ensure it is enabled (on my A7V8X it can not be disabled in the setup). do you run windows (ugh), if so, does the ethernet controller work? [newbie] tulip ethernet card woes...
Does anyone know of any issues surrounding use of the tulip ethernet card driver under the default 2.6 kernel in Mandrake 10? The ethernet card has worked fine with the tulip driver under 9.2. I'm using drakconnect and it is at the select network interface to configure stage that Drakconnect refuses to detect the ethernet card at all (It does show the integrated Broadcom NIC on the motherboard). If the tulip driver is chosen manually, drakconnect refuses to accept it and returns me to the select network interface to configure stage again. As a test I installed a 2.4 kernel, and drakconnect works just fine and allows me to configure my card but of course I want 2.6! any help appreciated... [newbie] M10C IRQ 11 and PCMCIA
Hi All, Awhile back I had asked this question and didn't really recieve any response that I can remember. My setup is an Inspiron 7500 Dell Laptop using a Netgear FA-511 cardbus PCMCIA adapter. Normally when I install I do a network install so I am perplexed by what is happening. After the net install using the Netgear card in the pcmcia slot, on reboot, the cards lights are on indicating a connection. On further inspection there is no dhcp setting set even though I set this on install. In the wizzard, it shows the same driver that was used in previous versions of Mandrake; i.e., 9.1, 9, 8.2 etc, and it worked great on those distros! If I unplug the the card and plug it back in again nothing happens -- no lights etc. Also, on boot up I see a disabling IRQ 11 message around when the pcmcia/eth0 setup occurs. I have never seen this message in M9.2 and earlier. Could anyone please help me determine the the heck is going on as to why the pcmcia service/eth0 device is not playing nice? Mandrake Control Center Software Management (in 9.1 - it will be something similar in 9.2). It will list all the apps that it knows are available to you, which will be the ones on your disks. What I am wondering about is if M9.2 would be compatible with this and work. I am currently using this box as a web and dial-in server and am real hesitant about changing the OS in a working box. The old adage if it ain't broke then don't fix it comes to mind. However, with RedHat's EOL of RedHat 8 and it's up2date program for same, I would feel more comfortable with an OS I could update easily. All help/advice would be appreciated. Thank you, Phil Savoie I believe it's a i586/i686 issue. RH is compiled for i386. Mandrake for i586, with only a few libs where it shows some benefit, compiled for i686 (look in Mandrake's /lib/i686/). Problem is Cyrix, even the newer VIA-C(yrix)3 processors report themselves as i686, but are only marginally i586 compliant, and even retain some i486 legacy. I believe this mismatch is solved in 9.2, but check the eratta http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/errata.php3 IIRC, 9.0 was the last to be fooled by Cyrix cpu's. I couldn't get either 9.0 or 9.1 onto a Cyrix/IBM 266 box. I found a used amd cpu to replace it, and everything was fine after that. Anne Hello Anne and Tom, Thank you both for your responses. I guess if I want this box to be current in the form of os, then I will have to upgrade the cpu. Anne, I have no documentation for this machine and was wondering if you can remember what type of socket the cpu uses. Hence the bankrolling of RedHat and the kinda backdoor financing of Novell's pick on SuSE. HP would, then, seem logical. If such a thing comes to pass there would be reason for M$ to be worried. Two of it's main FUD attacks will be gone. One that there is no support from a major vendor and the second that open source is designed to drive profit driven companies out of business. The other thing is the sense of inevitability as Linux moves into the server and corporate mainstream. SuSE and Mandrake both lack the resources that Red Hat has to compete in that space. That doesn' t mean that they aren't good competitors it's just that Red Hat has a pocket full of thousand dollar bills while they're sitting there with 20s. [newbie] Installing 'un-official' mdk rpm's
Hi all Thanks for the help on rpmdrake. Now I have another question. What's the best way of installing an un-official mandrake rpm. I am trying to get gaim to work with msn now that they have apparently tinkered with the protocol. The gaim website says it should work with a version 7.1. They have a dl link that has a 7.2 mdk rpm at the top of the list so I grabbed that but now it won't install because of dep problems. Can I use urpmi, rpm, rpmdrake or anything else to install this? Re: [newbie] /images/usb.imb - ISO? [solved]
I had asked: I have a Thinkpad X20 with USB CD-ROM and *no* floppy drive. Mandrake 8.2 ISO CD 1 boots fine, but doesn't come with drivers for continuing with the USB CD-ROM drive. On my desktop machine I used the included rawwritewin.exe to create a floppy with the usb.img file. No system files seemed to appear on the floppy. When I attempt to burn a bootable CD it prompts me for a system floppy... I insert this one and it does not recognize it as valid. How can I turn this floppy image into an ISO image for my CD? My Windows CD-Writer was braindead... probably thought it wasn't a bootable floppy because it lacked COMMAND.COM... :-( Had a friend with linux burn the floppy img file into a bootable CD. Installation worked like a charm. See http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Bootdisk-HOWTO/cd-roms.html for instructions on turning the floppy .img file into an El Torito CD. Hello all, I used to use Novell Netware and I could used to be able to merge two disk volumes (disk partions±) together, to create a large volume (i.e. 10gb on HD1 + 20Gb on HD2) could give me a 30Gb volume. Is it possible to do the same with Linux? What I mean I create a directory called /work and then I mount two 40gb discs in this partition to give me 80Gb of space in the /work directory, or something similar. Also, how can I turn a directory / file stucture into an ISO image. Also, is it possible to mount to ISO images in the same directory. Depending on your location, you'll find that the following may or may not apply for roadrunner: 1) they use the MAC address in the negotiation. So if you used a Windows machine with a network card, you will have to use the same network card in your Linux box. 2) they sometimes assign you a hostname and that hostname/MAC address combo is used to authenticate who you are. If you had to enter a hostname for Windows, you will have to assign that same hostname to your Linux box. I'd assume that you would have already done this, so it probably does not apply to you. This second Realtek nic,...are you saying that you've used it inWindows to connect thru the cablemodem to your ISP, and it worked? Or are you saying that you've used it in Windows for something else, and it worked? If it worked to connect you in Windows (to your ISP that is) then the NIC is not your problem. Whether in Linux or Windows, the principles of TCP/IP are the same. Therefore, your problem is somewhere in Linux. You're probably using DHCP in Windows to get a dynamic IP number from your ISP each time you connect. If you can't do the same in Linux, then DHCP isn't runnin,or isn't running properly in Linux. If you're NOT using the NIC in Windows to connect to your ISP, but maybe to connect a second PC to this one, then I'd say that you should use this first NIC to connect to your ISP, and get another one to connect to the other PC. I know this is confusing, but I'm trying to be specific with insufficient info. By the way, /etc/dhcp , contains the DHCP Daemon (think executable file) that runs your DHCP "service". In other words, it's fine. But check the permissions on it. If you can't execute it when needed, your not going to get anywhere on the Internet. Change to root, and check the permissions on that file. Make sure that all the "Read" and "Execute" boxes are checked off. If it can't start, it can't get an IP number from your ISP. Now then, I have just built a NEW A7V + K7 800MHz + 128MB PC-133 ram, and the install is the same, no choices at all. trying: linux expert ide1=noautotune linux expert expert ide1=noautotune bla bla bla bla bla... it doesn't EVER prompt me with those cool screens that were available in Mandrake 7.1 !! Another thing that isn't prompted is do you want to wipe your /tmp on boot option y/n= I have my /tmp on a seperate 233MB partiton and YES i want it wiped!!! another thing that isn't prompted is do you want to install a printer? another thing that isn't prompted is the choice of EACH package (over 1000) (it was available in Mandrake 7.1, it isn't in 7.2!) okay, another thing, the development stuff is either uncompatable or screwed up. No Kdevelop, no KdeStudio, a bunch of libraries are missing, the QT and KDE paths have to be manually set or you can't compile anything. ON the plus side, I like the fact that most of those webserver[s] and exploitable stuff isn't installed by default. I like having to manually add it. Actually, I prefer 7.0 to 7.2...easier installation. Good luck. I didn't like 7.0 It had a lot of bugs. 7.1 was great! but I had to have that konqueror. another thing I hate, is searching for help on
Re: [newbie] How to install ppp ???
Hi, Dave. As a relative newcomer to Linux, only about a year ago, :) , I am still learning everyday. For example, switching from a CD-R to a CD-RW caused me a number of days searching for info as to why I could no longer access my CD-Rom drive. You will find this a very supportive list, and the response time is incredibly fast. Welcome to Linux! You'll be glad you arrived, as I am. :) Phil Murphy Registered Linux user 197338 Yamaha XS1100 SG - Original Message - From: Dave Burrows [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: Emiliano Ogando [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, January 21, 2001 1:03 PM Subject: Re: [newbie] How to install ppp ??? How can i install ppp This is interesting. Did your copy also come from Wal-Mart? I have a boxed version of 7.2 Complete which, I'm told, may not be so complete. Among other things, it's KDE 2.0 is not the final version but a Beta. Apparently, a disk is now on it's way to amend. Thing is, I also got the message that it couldn't find the ppp daemon (pppd) and that I should install it. I dug out RpmDrake and found the files related to pppd (there were 2, I think) and prepared to install them along with Enlightenment and the parts of Gnome that weren't installed initially. It kept telling me that it couldn't communicate with the CD ROM (though it's actually a CD-RW and there are 2 of them in Device Manager though only one on my machine.. in addition to a CD-ROM which appears as it should in Device Manager). That's another issue to swim through. I may also have a Winmodem. Rats. In this version of LM 7.2, the KDE is in Beta as I say. I have 2 users set up: "dave" and "root". The kicker in root works fine and looks just as it did in the screen shots on the web tutorials. However, there is no kicker loaded (and a message telling me so) in dave. (Side note: When does a single user of a machine use root and, in this case, dave?) Apparently, this is one of the issues that the update disk they're sending will solve. More frustratingly, one of many, many points of difference between the software and the manual included with it is illustrated on page 64 of the manual. In that illustration, the text in the window (of available packages from which to choose to install) shows KDE and quite a number of others which are not evident in my installation screen and the ones both (the manual and my software version) share in common are in a different order. The first two times I installed Linux (never used it before Friday night), I selected all the available options but 2; one on personal finances and another for Palm Pilot device interfaces, neither of which I have. g About 75% of the data in this 4 minute install came from the first disk with the remainder coming from the second (of the 4 in the package). Below that window is a button to install all components. That choice does install KDE and Gnome (but only 2 other desktop environments, not Enlightenment, BlackBox or any others that looked interesting in the tutorials on the website). Strangely, all but the last 10 seconds of data of a 6 minute install came from the first disk. If the manual said a particular choice detailed there might not be a choice for either recommended or custom modes, it was not not available in this package's custom instalation. Even if the manual warned only that it may not be an available choice in recommended mode installations, it was not available in the custom mode of this early 7.2 version of LM. In fact, there were only 2 choices: 300MB minimal and custom installations. There are many other differences, too. What I'm going to do is to just play with what I have for now. As soon as I can get a fully functional copy of less dubious integrity, I'll work more diligently to make my hardware work. With this arrangement, I am thinking it futile. Maybe what I'll do to pacify myself in the meanwhile is to buy a modem (to replace my 33.6 winmodem) that is possibly capable of faster download speeds, set up my download manager in Win98 and download the ISO images for the disks from the web. I am glad to have the manual and the books and so forth on the other 2 disks but darn-it, it sure would be nice to have a copy that works. I am glad to have gotten this far in one weekend, though. I delayed Linux for close to 2 years, unsure that I'd be able to "do" it. I've read the Re Hat newslist from time to time and it appeared as though people, much brighter than I about computers, struggled to install and configure it. Universally, people seem broadly satisfied with the system and so I figure it'll be worth the effort. I was surprised at how easily I could run a dual OS drive, the choice made with Grub at boot. I did have some partitioning to do both before (with Partition Magic) and during installation but they went without a hitch. I see no evidence in Windows that
[newbie] I found it! CD-RW problem solved
I was composing a long letter to the list asking for help, listing all the steps I had done. (I'll include it anyways as it may help someone else in the same boat) Just before posting, I noticed that the instructions for creating the link from /dev/cdrom to /dev/scd0 differed on www.mandrakeuser.org from what I had read in all the previous locations. The command that finally worked was: ln -sf /dev/scd0 /dev/cdrom Whereas the command that had not worked was: cd /dev rm cdrom ln -s scd0 cdrom The only difference I can see in the commands is the -sf rather than -s, although the second command requests confirmation. Any ideas here, or are they the same? Is this CD-RW problem something that can be automated since LM does pick up that my hdc is a cd-rw? Once again, thanks to the list for all the info that is of so much help. THe following is the text I was going to send: I have been using Mandrake since 7.0, and have upgraded to 7.1, and recently to 7.2, and have been thoroughly impressed with Linux. [newbie] Clearing a print job
Hello, While trying to set-up my printer under Gimp the printer runs amok if I select a printer, or an option, from the list that is not compatible with my own (Epson colour 680). My question is, how do I clear the print job without having to reboot? This works but it soon becomes a real pain. Even after I have cancelled the print job under Kups and deleted the files in /var/spool/cups the printer continues to print meaningless characters until the system is rebooted. An updated Gimp printer database would be a step in the right direction. -- Regards, Phil [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I want to use two mice at once (one is a touchpad in my keyboard). Currently, DrakConf reports them as: Device: /dev/psaux Bus Type: PS/2 and Device: /dev/ttyS0 Bus Type: Serial My XF86Config-4 currently says: Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse1" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol""IMPS/2" Option "Device" "/dev/mouse" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection This results in the serial mouse working. [newbie] kdevelop 1.3 not working
Hello, I have kdevelop-1.3-linux-i386 which is a precompiled version that uses a shell script to start it. Kdevelop starts but fails to build any project types. During the create project phase I'm told that there is an error in configure.in and that the qt 2.2.1 libraries have not been found (I have qt 2.2.2). If I try to run the created project an error dialog says "makefile is not found". I suspect that the problem due to an incompatibility between the system used to build the precompiled version and Mandrake 7.2, but I could be wrong. Can anyone offer any suggestions? -- Regards, Phil [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[newbie] Adding SCSI
Ok, this is driving me nuts. How do I add a SCSI card to an existing 7.2 install? I'm trying to add an Adaptec 1542c but also have a 1522a that I can try. The system simply does not recognize the card. I've even tryd compiling a kernel that has the aha1542 module in it but no go. [newbie] Strange RPM problems
Ok, long story short. I'm trying to add an Adaptec 1542c SCSI card to an existing mdk7.2 system. I want to recompile the kernel to include SCSI support. I go to install the kernel-sources rpm and am told I need to install dev86. I rpm -i dev86, it runs for about 30-40 seconds. I then get the messages VM: killing process rpm. killed. rpm -q dev86 says it is not installed. Huh? Any ideas on whats happening? - Phil Garrett Systems Analyst Home Sales Co. / Hill Management [EMAIL PROTECTED] -

[newbie] Linux Mandrake Version 7.2 install
I have spent a week downloading Linux Mandrake Version 7.2.iso which I haveduly used to create a bootable cd-rom. I have tried it on 2 AMD 500 machines and a Celeron 600 without success. On one of the AMDs it just locks up part way through the white letters onblack screen boot.On the other AMD it gets as far as initialising CD ROM and then locks upOn the Celeron it did not get as far as this until I made the cd the masterdrive and then it gets as far as Initialising CD ROM before freezing withthe message:Kernel panic VFS; unable to mount root fs on 1:03I had previously installed version 7 on the Celeron. This was successful apart from the cd drive not being recognised and desktop loading up slowly and I (mistakenly) thought that upgrading to version 7.2 would solve these problems!
