[newbie] Ethernet ADSL modem
Hello again; I am in Australia and thinking of just buying an ethernet adsl modem to save the USB set-up hassels. So in an effort to determine what exact models were supported I ran the wizard in KDE. Now here's the thing... it asks you for your provider and Australia is not even listed! :( So what does that mean? I have to go about it from the command line? Thanks Scotty You can confirm this with Stephen on the list, but any external ADSL modem that includes one RJ45 connector and supports PPPOE and PPPOA should work, but make sure that the modem has a web-based interface. I've used Linksys, Dlink and GVC. They all work fine, but the GVC has been bullet-proof for me. I highly recommend the GVC BB0060 modem since I've been using it for the last year and a half without a problem, and so have many of my clients. As Lanman said, anything with an ethernet connection will cause you no grief, but perhaps it's a good move to first check what you want to do with it. i.e. If this is just a desktop using the internet, then it would make sense to use a modem/router, so you have a degree of firewall protection built right in and can plug in additional machine directly with a minimum of hassle. If your main purpose is to have the attached machine run as a server, then a straight modem running it's own firewall might be more appropriate. HTH Brian Hi guys, Another Melbourne user here, sweating away in the 35 degrees heat (That's celsius, for you USians currently recovering from over-indulgence on turkey and cranberry sauce :-) Just to reinforce what everyone is saying, an ethernet modem is basically a network server in it's own right. It has it's own DHCP server to dish out an IP adress to any machine that connets to it via ethernet regardless of OS, and takes care of all the ADSL/PPP-OE/whatever on the other side without your machine needing to know about it. You do all the configuration for your provider on the modem and not your machine. On your machine, you just set up a network connection to a LAN on eth0 in the MCC and it just works :-) Just make sure that whatever modem you pick is able to configured via a web browser and not via a windows program, and uses javascript, not ActiveX, usually if the label says config via Netscape and not just IE you should be fine. Virtually anything built in the last year should be OK, seeing how most of them now run some version of BSD or Linux and so are very cross-platform oriented and FOSS friendly. I'm currently connected to Ozemail with the very basic Dlink DSL-302G dual ethernet/usb modem, the second cheapest modem on the market, and it's worked perfectly for the last year or so. Originally connected direct to my laptop, it's now wired to a wireless router to give me more freedom (like right now sitting on the balcony trying to catch a breeze to cool down :-) You can buy the 302G most places for about A$130, but if you buy the Ozemail starter-kit for A$100, it has one in the box as well as a line filter, and no compulsion to join Ozemail. You can also find them online for as little as $90. Another option I know works is the Linksys WAG54G combined modem and wireless router which I set-up for my parents. It's about $220 to $250 and a very nice piece of kit. If you can afford it, I would highly recommend getting an ADSL router with built-in SPI firewall for that extra security, and save you having to mess with shorewall on you own box. It also gives you future options for adding more machines to your local net. Wired-only ADSL routers weigh in at about $150 to $200, so reallly are a bargin for what you get. Well, it could simply be that I'm running MDK on an older computer. I've never had this volume of issues installing any OS before. But, I must say, MDKMove seemed to have a better handle on things. That said, I love MDK, I've learned a tremendous amount in a few weeks, I have high regard for its open development approach. It's a good product and I'm sticking with it! I just did a clean install in a seperate hard drive on the same machine and everything works perfect Not that I am a expert but 10.0 is definatly by far the best linux release that I have ever seen although it looks like I will have to back up some files and then do a clean install to get my ADSL working right. Attualmente la connessione avviene all'avvio, ma c'e' un modo per connettersi in modalita' grafica senza dover staccare la corrente dal modem? All, I've just moved from Tokyo (where I had 8Mps cable modem, unlimited access running 2 ethernet NICs to drive my internet access and home network) to New Zealand. Here I've signed up for 128kps ADLS with 5G limited access and am having problems. The ADSL modem I have is a D-Link DSL-200 which research showed would work under Linux using eciadsl (http://eciadsl.flashtux.org). I've managed to get it working to the point where I can ping websites by name (e.g. www.yahoo.com) although the modem synchronization is sometimes a little dicey. The problems / questions: - When I ping, I notice some packets are lost. Approximately 1 in 5. Doesn't sound good to me... - Although I can ping, I can't seem to be able to connect through a browser. I've searched the archives and found one suggestion that got me to the ping stage: removing the GATEWAY=a.b.c.d line in /etc/sysconfig/network. I guess I don't really understand what else is needed to get networking er, well... working (I thought I knew it with the two ethernet NICs!!!). Ragazzi ho installato la Mandrake 8.2 e ne sono felicissimo;mi ha riconosciuto lo scanner,il masterizzatore gia pronto all'uso,e ,udite udite,i dvd funzionano benissimo senza nessun intervento da parte mia(beh..non credo che avrei saputo cosa fare tra l'altro) e adesso veniamo al dunque.L'unico problema il modem adsl Alcatel Speed Touch usb Manta.Ho lottato per quasi un mese con la Telecom(ho l'Alice flat) per farmelo dare perch mi avevano assegnato - a dispetto della mia precisa richiesta - un Ericsson sempre usb-non funzionante con linux-il suddetto Alcatel viene tra l'altro correttamente riconosciuto da Mandrake ma non so perch quando vado a configurare l'adsl,usando l'apposita utility,il sistema dopo un p mi dice che la connessione fallita e mi invita a ritentare da control center... Mandrake davvero ottima per me ma per continuare ho bisogno del vostro aiuto;se vi scocciate a ripetere delle cose trite magari indicatemi dove posso reperire le informazioni che mi servono. Sono piu' che newbie... Ho appena installato Mandrake 8.1 che so utilizzare (male) solo con KDE. Dopo numerosi tentativi ho installato il tutto senza riuscire a configurare la connessione via Internet con linea ADSL (Infostrada Verde-pro). Il modem e' un 3com Home Connect Dual link modem (modello 0788). Ho cercato nel sito della 3com e nei vari siti dedicati a Linux senza trovare indicazioni sufficienti (inutile tentare con il numero verde di Infostrada perche' non rispondono tecnici ma semplici impiegati). Qualcuno puo' aiutarmi con indicazioni elementari (eventualmente indicandomi anche dove individuare i parametri in Windows per settare direttamente il modem)? Grazie N.G.

I had similar problem as some other users. Was able to connect to Bellsouth DSL service with just my NIC card, but when I added new Linksys Router, I couldn't get online. Thanks to users who pointed out that I should set default gateway to the Router's ip address 192.168.1.1 also, I set my PC's IP address to 192.168.1.2 (instead of leaving it at 10.0.0.1 or something) as someone elso suggested. Mike Below is my notes based on my experience with mail and md8.1, hope they may be helpful. I'm not sure if I've gone about it the right way but it certainly worked for me ever since. It became very frustrating for me trying to resolve. Nev Getting Mail to Work I had a problem with 8.1 in that mail would not run. I tried all mail programs but I kept getting server not found messages. Logging on to my ISP was not a problem and the browser worked - just the mail. I tried reconfiguring and linuxconf and had it working but it reverted back to the same problem each time I rebooted. I traced the problem back to /etc/resolve.conf and changed the lines and mail immediately worked but still had the same problem with rebooting. Eventually found that resolve.conf was a link to /etc/ppp/resolve.conf. However resolve.conf was set each time by /etc/ppp/ppoe.conf in that it obtained the DNS values from the ISP Server on connect and overrode what was in /etc/ppp/resolve.conf. I told it not to go looking for the DNS and it then did not overwrite the resolve.conf file. # DNS type: SERVER=obtain from server; SPECIFY=use DNS1 and DNS2; # NOCHANGE=do not adjust. well first get normal networking happening on the linux box, you should have a network cart in both the windoze and linux box's.. connect them using a hub or a crossover cable (cheaper then a hub) you then set the ethernet card in the windows 2000 box to 192.168.0.1 (I think it might do it for you when you share the connection) set the linux box's IP to 192.168.0.2 or similiar... you should be able to ping each machine from the other... once that is done,, you need only set the gateway on the linux box to the ethernet IP of the windows box.. Ciao a tutti, io ho teleconomy adsl con un modem Alcatel SpeedStream 4060 USB che funziona benissimo su windows 98, ma visto che io devo abbondonare sto sistema del * perchè è troppo instabile, volevo sapere se il Mandrake supporta questo modem, se esistono driver. Ho provato sul sito dell'alcatel, niente driver x questo articolo. Il 187 non sa' nemmeno cos'è linux. Se qualcuno di voi è riuscito a far funzionare sto modem con linux, vi prego di rispondere, è molto importante per me! anch'io ho il tuo problema, e non sono riuscito a farlo funzionare, a questo punto volevo domandare alla lista, come mai sul sito della ALCATEL sono riuscito a ascaricare i driver per il modem USB.Forse ora è supportato??? [newbie] newbie] A ADSL Question
Hello, I am soon to be able to setup an adsl connection on my linux/windoze box. Verizon sent me the necessary filters, cables, ethernet card and modem as part of a package deal. Next weekend is my target to install and setup. My question is in regard to the "mini" HOWTO on setting up DSL. I noticed that the HOWTO that came with my Mandrake 7.1 was last updated back in 1998.
