[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Second question on Tach.

2012-04-14 Thread surfswab
Honda tachs are notoriously short-lived and almost impossible to
diassemble without damage, due to the press-fit way they are put
together.

And yours has been discontinued anyway, so there's no hope of buying
new. You might try an Ebaymotors search for a used one.

Or -- and this is what I'd do -- use it as an excuse to eliminate your
speedo also and go with one of the new digital speedo/tachs. Some of
them are quite impressive (built-in clocks, lap timers, dual
tripmeters, temp gages, etc.).

Some brand names that come to mind are Acewell and Koso.

Do a Google search for sources.

It is kinda scary, because you know it had to be sitting for some time, and
the bike is not broke in. I would call, because it could be a wife and
spouse who was looking at the wrong mile counter. You would probably need
to check the compression on the cylinders, but would be a risk. I am
thinking the ad might not be correct. Maybe the owner ran it every year, but
did not ride it.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Tachometer

2012-04-14 Thread Fred
The tach. on my 1986 450 quit working. I discovered that the insides are
loose. I have it off the bike. The cable is disconected and the lights are
out of it. The part the cable screws onto is slopy loose. If I get it in
the right place the tach. works. But I don't know how to get it apart to
get everything in place and tightened up so that it will work. Is there
something here that I am missing. Thank you guys for all the help. I

The resources you'll need to do this fix are right in your
neighborhood (Lelystad, The Netherlands) @:

http://www.cmsnl.com

First, buy a shop manual for your year and model (at the site, click
Honda, then Honda Documentation). Study up on the repair procedure,
then order whatever parts you'll need -- all at the same location.

I figured in amongst his cleaning and air leak checking he'd have noticed a
pinched fuel line, but now that I think about it I suppose that's not
really the case. You can miss a lot of things while focusing on a different
task while working on a vehicle.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Oil

2012-04-14 Thread surfswab
No need to warp your mind with all the choices available or the
relative merits of each. Your bike doesn't need anything exotic.
Shell Rotella T (not T5 or T6) 15W40 is good, old-fashioned motor oil
and meets all the right specs.

It's cheap. You can buy it by gallon and it's available just about
anywhere (Walmart, Autozone, etc.).

Change it every 3K and you're good to go.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Oil

2012-04-14 Thread Kurt Nolte
I think the one thing everyone can agree on in an oil thread is: No Car
Oil. None. Your bikes has a wet clutch. Car oils have friction inhibitors,
you'll run the risk of burning out the clutch.

Use an appropriate weight motorcycle rated oil of your choice. MA rating,
if I'm not mistaken. JASO MA, or something.

I personally use the Honda stuff. Not all that expensive, I know its the
proper rating, and the couples extra bucks a change isn't worth the hunt
and hassle for me.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] 450 Carb adjustment

2012-04-14 Thread Kurt Nolte
Just a couple questions:

Does it "Start over" if you come to a stop and set out again? Does it
improve if you downshift, or do you keep the low power condition?

Have you checked to make sure your tank vents are working properly, and
your carbs aren't trying to literally suck fuel against a vacuum to deliver
fuel to the bike?

Change the fluids regularly use motor oil that's compatible with a bike's wet
clutch. Keep the bike in a good state of maintenance, store it in a garage if
possible, check tire pressure before each ride. If you have a chain drive lube
frequently and clean/adjust with each oil change. Once a year go over the bike
with a torque wrench to make sure nothing is vibrating loose. Put stabilizer in
the gas if you won't ride it for more than 3 weeks. Get a battery tender as
well. When winterizing put it on the center stand and block up the engine to
get the front wheel off the ground. Take a motorcycle safety course, read some
books like "proficient motorcycling" they will give you lots of tips on how to
ride safe/well. Enjoy!

So I am planning to buy a 1991 Nighthawk as my first bike! I have
always loved the model. It's the perfect mix of the classic CB and the
newer street style CB's. I won't front. I don't know too much about
riding or the bike yet and I want to know everything there is to know
so I can have a long, prosperous relationship with my bike. It's
obviously used and the owner doesn't have the manual anymore, I was
curious what advice you all would give this newbie about taking care
of my bike so that my bike takes care of me.

Thanks all for any and all you have to say!

RE: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Need Direction

2012-04-14 Thread Pastor Ron
There is to much missing, for me to want to be seen on that thing. You
could get a parts bike or sell it for parts. Any money you put in that bike
will be lost unless you restore it. The chopped frame could be repaired, but
would be impractical, because if you had to weld back in, you would use the
new frame. I think you will have a very hard time selling it or getting
your money out when you are done. Sometimes we make mistakes and it is
better to just cut our loses.
