Shutdown in win2k

2001-08-28 Thread Joe L. Casale

How can I disable powerdown @ shutdown on an Win2k server.
Reason is, I have a server in a location with very bad power.
Only bios settings are resume last state when power is reapllied.
The ups turns the box off, but I want it on when the ups comes back to
life in the event it runs out...If the server shutsdown and stays at "it
is now safe..." when the ups dies, itll turn back on when the ups gets
power as well.

Any ideas?

The Cisco VPN client requires a Cisco VPN Concentrator (i.e. 3005, 3015,
3030, etc.) at the location you are connecting to (your home). The cost for
the Concentrator is $3000 plus depending on model. The client then allows
you to setup a tunnel with encryption to the Concentrator.

This works great connecting a number of home PCs to the office. However,
it's a bit expensive to connect to your home PC. I would forget the Cisco
client and look into some of the other options that have been suggested.

Broken SAM

2001-08-28 Thread Richard McClary

I screwed up yesterday and blew away an account that was an essential
service account (long story!).

Each night, various user files are backed up with a command line job that
includes the "/b" (local registry) switch. With one of these tapes, is it
fairly straight forward to restore _ONLY_ the SAM database (and thus
recover that user with all its rights)?

RE: What do you get for Over Time

2001-08-28 Thread Christopher Monahan

I've had 1:1 comp time, but only at my manager's discretion and we had to
keep it quiet. We had too little management so our 2.5 person group made
sure everything was covered and co-ordinated our time. In a couple of
places I've had (and have now) an occasional comp day when we do an all day
Saturday upgrade, or something like that, but I still put in more than 40
hours routinely. There was also an early job where I got comp time but
later found out I was exempt and should have been getting OT. That place is
a bad example because they were always screwing people any way they could.
I was once told I could not be promoted because my salary was not within the
salary range for my job grade. I had been that job grade for two years and
I was making below the company set policy minimum for that job grade. I did
get a raise that brought me over the minimum, but I was still gone in a
couple of months.

What has been more common is oncall compensation pay. That's extra pay just
for carrying the beeper/phone/laptop and being prepared to drop your life to
work on a company problem. That does not include compensation for any work
actually done oncall, though management has tried to argue that. In each of
my last three jobs the company has implented the oncall compensation to stay
competitive in the job market.

As far as constructive advice? Some people won't learn until you leave.
It's a Catch-22. HR should be paying attention to the job markets and
advising management what needs to be done to retain people. You may have to
help HR along with some research of your own, but it probably has to be
focused on your local job market, not what Silicon Valley or other high-tech
focal points do. Unless you can fake them out. :-)

Just wondering what policies are set up at other companies to compensate for

We consistently work about 8-12 hours over a month and we get no time off or

RE: What do you get for Over Time

2001-08-28 Thread Christopher Monahan

Good point on the reason. I definitely look at how productive or slacking
I've been that day/week when I want to go home but something "has" to get
done. Also, I'm in a smaller company now with a directo impact on our one
product. If I blow off that 'has to be done' because I feel I'm being
unreasonably overworked it could be much more damaging than it would be in
the large corporate environment.

Ive always considered the reason for the overtime. If it is due to my
ignorance or poor planning. That's my fault. If however the overtime is
for a planned upgrade that could be done in business hours except for the
lost productivity of the users, then I expect some comp time.

The comp time should come at the convenience of the employer. Many time
taking the next day off is counter productive.

Welcome to IT. I've always done it, been on salary, and that's how it is.
One way around it I've found is to take extra time off. I've never had an

take the next day to work from home.
Best Advice: Don't complain about it too much. That's a good way to lose

RE: VPN NEWBIE

2001-08-28 Thread Jason Gauthier

Playing devils advocate here: These opinions may or may not be my own.

One reason someone may choose to not use VPN solutions under win2k is
because the protocol in use is PPTP.
Even though as of version 2 it was more secure, it is the least secure VPN
protocol. I also beleive that there is some restrictions with encryption.
(If your server is 56bit (why?) you need a 56bit client, if it's 128, then
you can only use 128bit client)

ISA Server Issues

2001-08-28 Thread Roger Ali
Title: RE: Wildcard question

Hey all,

    Got
a couple of questions regarding ISA Server?  I recently set one up and I've got
it running.  My questions are:

1.   When going through the setup I read that the Gateway for the client
machines IP settings must be the ISA Server, is this correct?  We are on an IP frame and currently we
have our PC Gateways as the primary router on the frame.  I'm not sure it will work with this
and I'd like to be sure if it must be the Gateway for the clients, and if
it must why Microsoft did this as with Proxy we were not required to have Proxy
as the Gateway.

2.   I got ISA working and users were allowed to get out but the auto
discovery of the setting would not work, I followed the instructions in the
help files, is there something I'm missing.

Please help ASAP I'd like to get
this rolled out for a small isolated group in our network.  Also I setup the server in an Array,
does this make a difference to the settings, I thought it would just be for
performance as we plan on expanding this group at another location and I'd
have this be the primary and have the users at the remote site get access
through a second ISA Server in the Array.
Is this idea correct, Please help.

Thanks

I've

We are
using Double Take for Exchange 5.5 failover and have successfully tested
fail-over on a test server, as well as on a production Exchange
box.  Its a bit of a pain to set up, and requires some downtime on your
Exchange server, but it does work.  Just make sure you follow NSI's
specific Exchange Server implementation instructions.

Obvious Disclaimer:  Play with this in a lab setting before
throwing it on a production server!  Practice failing over and back
again.  I did about 10 successful failover/recoveries (and countless
unsuccessful ones) to make sure I knew its behavior before going live with
it.

Domain Admin cannot use admin tools

2001-08-28 Thread Steve Kelsay

Strange thing started happening last week. All the domain administrators have lost the
capability of using usrmgr.exe and srvmgr.exe! They come up, but any attempt to make
changes gets "ACCESS DENIED".

All accounts are still domain admins, and all rights remain unchanged. Checked for

I'm getting this error in the event log on the PDC - The redirector has
timed out a request to computer. The computer name is itself. So, it seems
the computer is having some sort of problem. Then shortly after, I start
getting replication errors between the PDC & BDC and then users get an error
logging in saying it can't find the domain controller. Reboot fixes things
for a short time and then it happens again.

Any ideas on what might be causing this?

One reason someone may choose to not use VPN solutions under win2k is
because the protocol in use is PPTP.
Even though as of version 2 it was more secure, it is the least secure VPN
protocol. I also beleive that there is some restrictions with encryption.
(If your server is 56bit (why?) you need a 56bit client, if it's 128, then
you can only use 128bit client)

RE: ISA Server Issues

2001-08-28 Thread Stalzer, Jim
Title: RE: Wildcard question

You
can have SecureNAT Clients (enter the gateway ip - these PCs are
usually servers and can publish to the internet), Firewall Clients (install
the firewall client - we use this for W2K Professional clients) or Web Proxy
Clients (enter the proxy info into the browser).  Which method you use
depends on the use of the PC.

  Hey all,

Got a couple of questions regarding ISA Server?  I recently set one up and I've got it
  running.  My questions
  are:

  1.
  When
going through the setup I read that the Gateway for the client machines IP
settings must be the ISA Server, is this correct?  We are on an IP frame and currently we
have our PC Gateways as the primary router on the frame.  I'm not sure it will work with this and
I'd like to be sure if it must be the Gateway for the clients, and if it must
why Microsoft did this as with Proxy we were not required to have Proxy as the
  Gateway.
  2.
  I got
ISA working and users were allowed to get out but the auto discovery of the
setting would not work, I followed the instructions in the help files, is
  there something I'm missing.

  Please help ASAP I'd
like to get this rolled out for a small isolated group in our network.  Also I setup the server in an Array,
does this make a difference to the settings, I thought it would just be for
performance as we plan on expanding this group at another location and I'd
have this be the primary and have the users at the remote site get access
through a second ISA Server in the Array.  Is this idea
  correct, Please help.

  Thanks

RE: VPN NEWBIE

2001-08-28 Thread daniel . gilbert

Ok, so now maybe I can show how little I know about VPN's:

Would it be possible to add IPSec to the servers and use the L2TP protocol?
That would give the VPN greater security than the PPTP protocol. And there
wouldn't be an increase in cost.

Just my thoughts.

Hello gang,

I'm planning the deployment of an ISA server and I have one issue left to attend to. When I want to publish a server (Exchange and IIS), can the IP of the actual server be a non-routable IP or does it have to be a routable one ?

Thanks,

Folder as a document depository?

2001-08-28 Thread Jesse Rink

This shouldn't be so difficult but I'm having a brain fart.

I want to have a directory on my server that certain people (a global
group) can put files into but NOT be able to edit the file afterwards or
mess with (change or delete) other peoples files.

For example:
Sally creates a word document... She saves it to this document depository
directory. She cannot delete the file after she saves it nor can she edit
it. Other users cannot change/delete her file either.

How do I set the NT4.0 dir perms to do this?

Add/Change does not work. I think Add/Change will work *IF* they
MOVE/COPY a file into the dir though.

Help needed,
thanks

RE: ISA Server Issues

2001-08-28 Thread Eric Peeters
Title: RE: Wildcard question

The way I am doing
it varies depending on whether the end user is running NT or 2000. The first
step is common to both, however. Send an e-mail to the users being transitioned
and tell them how to turn off the Proxy client. That is the only step necessary
for my Windows 2000 clients (Win 2000 Pro SP2 with IE 5.0). For my NT users, the
same E-mail included instructions on how to enable automatic settings discovery,
which worked for me.

If automatic
settings discovery is not working for you, make sure you have enabled it in the
ISA server (ISA - Server and Arrays - - Client configuration
- Web browser).

As a work around,
you can send your users an E-mail with a link to the gateway settings
(http://:8080/array.dll?GetRoutingScript). Once they
click on it, they should be set.

ISA doesn't *have*
to be the gateway to the outside for your users, but you will of course not
benefit from any of its functionalities (monitoring, reporting, controling,
etc...) if you use any other gateway. If you use a different gateway, it can't
be on the same path as your ISA server.

Printing between Trusting Domains (NT4)

2001-08-28 Thread K . Eaton

Greeting One-and-All

Some assistance please.

I have 2 NT4 domains which trust each other (both ways)
(1 in UK,  1 in Germany.. over a WAN)

I want to setup a network printer in the UK which points to a physical printer in Germany.
(The actual printer is connected to an NT4 workstation via an LPT connection... not Jet Direct)

I've added security permissions to the printer such that it should allow print jobs from my domain.

However when I try to create the network printer connection in the UK it always fails
(with an "invalid printer name" message)
((The German PC is listed in my HOST file.))
However if I connect using the IP address and the share name it will create the printer.
Although it doesn't seem to work properly.

what am I missing here?
(I thought this would be a trivial task wrong again !!!)

Re: Printing between Trusting Domains (NT4)

2001-08-28 Thread Ernest . Dinda

Sounds like a netbios name resolution issue. At a command prompt when you type
net view \\pcname\print-sharename what happens. You mention a HOSTS file and
the German PC IP being in there. Do you use WINS and if yes is the PC
registered there and are both clients at each end properly setup as WINS
clients?

You could also try a LMHOSTS files, which acts as a WINS type resolution
process. The basic syntax would be:

ip address of german pc netbios name of german pc #PRE #DOM:domain
name of german domain that pc is member of

For example:
192.168.1.25 germanpc01 #PRE #DOM:domgermany

The entries need to be separated by at least one space (I use a tab) and the
#PRE and #DOM keywords need to be in caps.

See if that works.

Thanks

Re: SmartStart Question

2001-08-28 Thread Ernest . Dinda

We do the quick config instead of following the GUI in smartstart. Then we
load the server O/S wiht our unattended builds. You can access the quick
config by pressing F10 once the GUI just starts, ie that red screen with the
van , etc. appears. Then you can choose the language and then you get a menu
to choose what to install. For example we choose 1 for english and then 2 to
Configure System and create System Partition.

You can also use their scripting tools to create a pre-canned config and just
flash it completely in an unattended build, skipping the smartstart
completely. This however requires that same hardware, cards, cards in the same
slots, etc.

Thanks

WINS server querying other WINS server

2001-08-28 Thread Smiles, Matthew
Can a WINS server be configured to query another WINS server when it doesn't
know the answer to a name resolution query? For example, I need WINS in a
DMZ type environment and I don't want the DMZ web servers to query corporate
WINS directly. I want the DMZ servers to register with and query a WINS
server within the DMZ and if that DMZ WINS server does not know the answer
to a NETBIOS name query, it is configured (and has the necessary holes in
the firewall) to query corporate WINS. I think the answer is no and I would
have to make the DMZ WINS server a replication partner of corporate WINS,
but then this would put the corporate WINS database in the DMZ which is not
allowed. Any thoughts are appreciated.
Thanks,
Matt

No longon server available via vpn

2001-08-28 Thread Paul Armstrong

Hello All,

I have a laptop that I configured to connect to a netopia vpn via PPTP.
I can connect and gain access to the network but when I enable it to
connect to the network it comes up with the 'no logn server available
error!' when I connect to the vpn. I added an entry to the lmhost file
as follows: 192.168.2.19 server1 #PRE #DOM:2XIST.' This didn't seem to
do anything because it still comes up with the error. If i hit OK and
let it completely log in, I am able to ping hosts on the internal
network but sometimes it wont access resources and sometimes it requests
to logon again. Is the netry to the lmhosts file that I created correct.
I also have the workgroup and domain in the networking control panel set
to the same domain. Any help guys?

ps: the reason I want the user to log into the domain when they connect
via the vpn is because they want to use the briefcase to sync there
files. If they aren't logged in the sync fails, the only way I get it to
connect is to try and access the server first and login and then do the
sync but this procedure would be too hard for the user, the easiest
method is to get them to log into the domain when they connect to the
vpn.

Re: Ghost and drive letters

2001-08-28 Thread xylog

If you are using the ghost boot disk that the program creates I do not think
a network redirector is included, meaning you cannot map drives. To create a
network boot disk with the redirector you need the MS Network Client for DOS
which you can find on the NT 40 server CD under \clients\msclient\netsetup.

2000 printing

2001-08-28 Thread perezgg

Hello I am having a problem with a printer. First off I have
a 2000 network running in native mode. I did not set up this network and just started
with this company, so I don’t
know the layout to well. My problem is that I am trying to change the IP of a
printer because it is in conflict with another printer. I have gone to all the
servers and cannot see any of the printers except for the ones we have added to
print to. Like I said before this is a 2000 network running AD and the print/file
server is clustered. Any ideas where I should look to find the domain printers
or where to add a new one and remove the old one?

Install Order for Post SP6.0a rollup and IIS4.0 cumulative

2001-08-28 Thread Bruce Raymond
Title: Install Order for Post SP6.0a rollup and IIS4.0 cumulative

Hi,

What is the recommended order in which to install the post SP6.0a security hotfix rollup and the IIS4.0/5.0 cumulative update?  I assume they should be installed in that order I just mentioned and that if a component is added/updated then the NT SP6.0a, SP6.0a hotfix rollup and the IIS cumulative updates should be installed again in that order.  Is that correct in your experience?

Also, one of our DC's (NT4.0 SP6.0a) has Exchange 5.5 (SP4) with OWA running on it.  Does the same install order still apply and do these hotfixes have any negative impact on Exchange from what you have seen?  I assume I'll have to stop all Exchange services beforehand.

Thanks,

Bruce

Thanks for that suggestion Peter.

Adding ISA on top of SBS4.5 is probably going to be more cost and potential
trouble than we want to think about.

Upgrading to SBS2K is not a (budget) option in this area for another 12 or
so months at which time they will get it along with ISA. Just looking for a

SBS 4.5 SP6A, Exchange 5.5, Proxy 2 etc.

Manager of the area would like to restrict web access to certain sites or at
least require a password to get out to non-approved sites. The Proxy options
appear to only allow either a permit or deny access list common to all
domain users not selectable per user/group.

Is there a way around this or a 3rd party product that may help?. I have
looked at Surf Control but it is a bit expensive for what in theory seems a
straight forward requirement (I was surprised Proxy could not do it but I
may be looking in the wrong place!!).

Thanks very much in advance

Re: No longon server available via vpn

2001-08-28 Thread Lowell Kinzer

If server1 is a PDC, two entries are needed:

192.168.2.19server1 #PRE#DOM:2XIST
192.168.2.19"server1\0x1B" #PRE

The portion of the second line that appears between the pair of double quotation marks
must be exactly 20 characters, 15 characters for the NetBIOS name and 5 characters
for the NetBIOS suffix. For NetBIOS names containing fewer than 15 characters, pad
with spaces. See Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q245172 for more information.

Cheers!

I was wondering if anyone has any policies set up for Over Time.

The reason I ask is one of the other network guys and myself have put in
about 40 hours over time this month and we receive nothing for it.

Just wondering what policies are set up at other companies to compensate for
over time.

We consistently work about 8-12 hours over a month and we get no time off or
anything for this.

Management keeps telling us it is just part of our job and we can not get
any comp time even though we are only scheduled for

40 hours a week.

Sorry about the cross posting.

We don't have a lot of specifics on it, but there appears to be a new
worm on the loose. The payload is a typical Melissa-style worm, where
its only action is to send mail to all members of the GAL, with the
following
message:
"Hi, how are you ? I am fine here. Please read the page
http://pcControl.tripod.com/ to get some knowledge and prevent somebody
hack you. Forword this mail to help all your friends too."

Its plain text, and carries no executables with it, but I haven't
visited the website yet. More info to follow, but there is zero
information on the web about it at this point.

RE: Memory problems

2001-08-28 Thread JMonahan

I use SP6 on all my Citrix installs. Make sure you apply the post SP6 ICA
browser hotfix, Q269214. There is one issue with this hotfix that you have
to delete this registry key after applying it, and before rebooting.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\HotFix\Q147222

You should update the master browser first and update all your MF servers
to keep them working together smoothly. You shouldn't have to re-apply any
MF SP's or hotfixes unless specifically stated in the readme, although some
people do it anyway just to be sure.

I was in a long a$$ meeting. Sorry.
No, I'm using the bootdisk that comes with 2001. It doesn't say personal
edition. I tried the net use command, didn't work. My dos skills are rusty
possibly.
I'll check out bootdisk.com. Never been there b4.
I just want the command to add to the autoexec.bat file. Norton makes the
disk for me.

Ok gang. Thanks for all the help both on and off list. The answer had to be
in the Netlogon service, according to Novell.

I tried to reboot the PDC, but was told I had no rights to do so. "AHA you
scoundrel", says I. "I'll show you who's in charge here!".

Warily pressing the Big Red Button, the administrator jumps quickly
backward, allowing the defiant machine to die gracefully.

"Rise and Heal thyself!" I yelled. Slowly, the beast began to stir,
eventually coming to full life and, having been beaten into submission, was
henceforth properly responsive to all demands made of it.

Strange thing started happening last week. All the domain administrators
have lost the capability of using usrmgr.exe and srvmgr.exe! They come up,
but any attempt to make changes gets "ACCESS DENIED".

All accounts are still domain admins, and all rights remain unchanged.
Checked for viruses and resynched, but no change. We are running Novell
Account manager in parallel, but nothing has changed with it either,
although I am most suspicious of this as the cause, but I need to cover all

password under some of the services where I had them hard coded at the

Strange thing started happening last week. All the domain administrators
have lost the capability of using usrmgr.exe and srvmgr.exe! They come up,
but any attempt to make changes gets "ACCESS DENIED".

All accounts are still domain admins, and all rights remain unchanged.
Checked for viruses and resynched, but no change. We are running Novell
Account manager in parallel, but nothing has changed with it either,
although I am most suspicious of this as the cause, but I need to cover all
the bases.

Has anyone seen this before?

Thanks for the reply.
No, we have a single domain, no trusts. Netlogon is running fine. Nothing in
the event logs pertinent to the problem.

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 08/28/01 09:19AM >>>
trusts? have your account permissions been revoked in the trusted domain?
contact those administrators and verify membership? i get the message but i
am no longer an account op in the trusted domain...

Re: WINS server querying other WINS server

2001-08-28 Thread Ernest . Dinda

You would need to make it a replication partner. Even if it could pass the
query the holes you would have to open in the firewall make no sense. I guess
I would wonder why a DMZ web server even needs access to WINS period, I would
think you would only need DNS. If you need a netbios query for some reason you
could use lmhosts instead of having WINS out there.

Thanks

Thanks,
Matt

Here are a couple of KB Articles for you to review about listing usernames
and how to prevent non-admins from viewing them.

We use account lockout consistently in the military and haven't had any
problems that I am aware of. I have had local admin accounts locked out on
member servers before but NT 4.0 will allow a locked-out admin account to
logon locally to the server to unlock itself. I hope that this information
helps,
