Right, so Mark's assertion that "... so, no other adjustment needed.",
is not correct, and as Jim originally stated, " the OS sees the bigger
disk, but doesn't expand
 the volume.".

That's my experience as well.

Yes, the volume is expanded, but the actual partition on the drive
remains the same. This is the expected behavior.

Next, you use a partition resizing utility to expand that partitin to
fill the drive. I use a Gparted live cd, which is free. Someone else
already mentioned a rescue cd that contains the same program.

I hope that helps.

That's probably just a registration message which means nothing.

If this is a user provided device, I can almost assure you that the user has
the wrong plan.

In fact I had a user like that today.

I am still new at this BES thing. My first two phones activated just fine
but I have one that sits at initalizing on both the phone and server sides.

I have tried both the wireless and wired/usb methods. I have also removed
the activation and recreated the user. Still no luck.

This phone is about 6 months old and it did upgrade a bunch of apps when I
hooked it up to the usb cable.

Anyone with some insights to get this phone activated?

replacement. Happened to us Thanksgiving Day, added a lot of stress to our
Christmas. We're now in replace/repair mode.

Even with that problem Christmas was good and no one was sick or injured or
had passed on.

I am still new at this BES thing. My first two phones activated just
fine but I have one that sits at initalizing on both the phone and
server sides.

I have tried both the wireless and wired/usb methods. I have also
removed the activation and recreated the user. Still no luck.

This phone is about 6 months old and it did upgrade a bunch of apps when
I hooked it up to the usb cable.

Anyone with some insights to get this phone activated?

I installed Win7 on my E6500 recently and only installed drivers for the
hardware Win7 didn't detect or doesn't function properly without it. The
audio works with the default MS driver, and I don't get any pop-ups.

IIRC, I installed the mouse driver for the scrolling, the Bluetooth
driver, the SD reader and the Nvidia driver (from Nvidia). BTW, did you
know the pointing stick is also a button if you tap it?

So, after wiping and installing Win7 + Dell Drivers on my E6500 a while
back, whenever I'd plug my headphones in to the output jack, it would
pop up a window asking me if I was plugging in headphones, or a
line-level device.

After about the 10th time it did that, I checked the "Don't pester me
with this" box, figuring that on the rare occasion that I plug the
output in to a line level device, I'd go ahead and open the applet
manually to change it.

Well, that time has arrived, and I can't for the life of me find the
applet to do it. Nothing in the start menu. Nothing obvious in the
Program Files dir. No Control Panel.

Any ideas on where this applet lives? Or if anybody still has this
enabled on their system, can you give me the .exe name to look for?

Thanks.

RE: Multiple Bluetooth radios.

On my WinMobile device, there are some tunable parameters that I've seen
tweaked to handle audio dropouts (bytes per xfer, etc...).

Some googling there might be helpful.

I believe Bluetooth only uses one channel so my guess would be no. If
you must change out the existing Bluetooth you might want to disable it
either in the BIOS or hardware.

2009-12-28 Thread Andrew Levicki
Hi Dave,

This is one of the joys of BlackBerries, I'm afraid. It's not unusual to
have this situation. Because of the many things that can go wrong during
activation, these things can happen. What I would do is this:

- delete the user from BlackBerry Enterprise Server
- on the handset, go to Options, Security Options, General Settings, Wipe
Handheld
- reboot the BlackBerry Enterprise Server server hardware or at least
restart the BlackBerry services in services.msc
- recreate the user on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and set activation
password rather than generate and email password.

This normally does the trick for us when this happens.

Good luck!

Symlinks.. UNC... Possibilities

2009-12-28 Thread Jason Gauthier
All,

Using Windows 2008's ability to create symlinks I would like to
achieve the following goal:

Using SCVMM's library features, create a symlink in the directory that
points to my storage of ISOs on another server. (I do not want to
duplicate ISOs).

What I have done:

  * I have created symlinking ability with fsutil. I've enabled all the
policies.

 * I have changed the system service accounts of VMM, and given the
paths the appropriate permissions

 * I have verified the user can browse locally.

What doesn't work, but I expect it should:

* Browsing to the library. When I select the Symlink I get "The
symbolic link cannot be followed because its type is disallowed"

I read this is solved by enabling the policies with
fsutil.. I did that (L2L, R2L, L2R, and R2R all set to 1)

* When refreshing the SCVMM library, I receive an error:

VMM could not find the specified path
\\VM-SysCen-01.ctg.com\MSSCVMMLibrary\VLK ISOs\Windows
2008\Windows_Svr_2008R2_64-bit.ISO on the VM-SysCen-01.ctg.com server.

Ensure that you have specified a valid file name parameter, and then try
the operation again.

ID: 2904

Details: The system cannot find the path specified (0x80070003)

This is not a specific file issue. I've tried to put a different one
there.

Additionally, when refreshing, procmon gives a few interesting things:

2009-12-28 Thread Kurt Buff
Is that prospective posterity, or actual posterity?

Speaking of worst Christmas - ours was probably not the worst, but it
was down there.

4 month old child has an ear infection, and a cold (or colds) that has
lasted about 3 weeks and is restless and fussy. Wife came down with a
cold Christmas Eve day, and is still feeling pretty down, though
better than over the weekend. So, I go them all one better. I started
feeling poorly the morning of Christmas Eve, spiked a 100.4 fever
about dinner time, and headed to bed by 20:00. I also slept most of
Christmas day, though I started feeling much better, almost normal, on
Boxing Day, and today I'm just fine.

We called friends early Christmas Eve and canceled long-standing plans
to go over for Christmas dinner.

Bummer.

Good presents from family though. That was very nice. Child is feeling
much better, after about half way through course of antibiotics.

Hope everyone else's was much better.

Just make sure the computer account is a member of the RAS/IAS servers security
group. I think if you right click the root node in the IAS console there is a
"Register" option that will do this for you.

There were issues with IAS and RRAS between 2000 and 2003 that dealt with
default levels of security. I don't remember the details, although they should
be in the windows 2003 upgrade whitepapers at Microsoft.com.

We had a single 2000 server that was holding us up from moving to 2003 domain
and forest levels. It had some
old software that required it to be a DC and that software has now been
removed. I demoted it this AM to a Member Server
and was just watching & waiting for any issues. Looks good so far - no problem
or errors.

My question is that it is a Windows 2000 Member Server running IAS, if I raise
the functional levels to 2003, will the
Windows 2000 Member Server still continue to process IAS requests correctly?
My guess is yes, but I want to verify
with anyone that has done this before I click Raise.

I appreciate your input,
Matt

You can bring up another VM, mount the image of the VM of which you want to
extend the system partition, and use diskpart. There's a brief synopsis

Moving to 2003 domain and forest questions

2009-12-28 Thread Matt Falenski
We had a single 2000 server that was holding us up from moving to 2003
domain and forest levels. It had some
old software that required it to be a DC and that software has now been
removed. I demoted it this AM to a Member Server
and was just watching & waiting for any issues. Looks good so far - no
problem or errors.

My question is that it is a Windows 2000 Member Server running IAS, if
I raise the functional levels to 2003, will the
Windows 2000 Member Server still continue to process IAS requests
correctly? My guess is yes, but I want to verify
with anyone that has done this before I click Raise.

I appreciate your input,
Matt

Edit the VM prosperities, on the "option" tab there is a boot options on
the left side of the box. Highlight it and on the right side now appears
the box to check for booting into the bios.

RE: XP Pro workstation on VMware

2009-12-28 Thread RichardMcClary
Well, my progress so far has me feeling that, for the last 3 hours, I have
been dealing with the new Sony product reviewed several months back in The
Onion... ("Sony announces a brand new stupid POS that doesn't $#&@ work")

WHY do two separate downloads of vmscsi-1.2.0.4.flp end up with the
delightful Setup message, "Setup cannot copy the file: vmscsi.sys"?"

I'd just forget this mess and try a P2V from an existing physical.
HOWEVER, I've come across enough in this futile effort to see that P2V for
XP won't work without this driver...

Subject: Checking for clean removal of application

We have an application that installs an agent on a server. We want to
test to see how cleanly the agent is removed after uninstalling it. Does
it remove all the registry entries, all the files , all the registered
DLLs, etc

Anyone have suggestions for tools to use? I've thought of using WinDiff
to compare pre and post for the registry, but not sure about the other
stuff.

How does one create the floppy image? What I got from LSI seems to be an
installer for a local machine...

Do I unzip the installer and simply copy the contents into a directory? Do
I "burn" the contents of the download into an ISO? (Oh well, not that much
more time lost to try both.)

If neither of the above, I'm sure one of you will let me know. Thanks

When I run into this, I check the option to go force the VM into BIOS on
next reboot. Then after exiting BIOS, you'll get the option to press ESC
to choose a boot option again. It's fairly frustrating and I'd love to
know why CTRL-ALT-DEL doesn't seem to stick, but it is much better than
deleting the VM J

If I do not hit "F6" to specify a mass storate device, the install

a blinking "_" in the upper left corner. SO, I have to delete that "VM"
and start from scratch...

Hitting "F6", I am given the choices of either not specifying a mass
storage device (ie, hard drive) and "continuing". We know that gets me
nowwhere...

The alternative choice is to hit "S". With that, I am told to insert
(that is, mount an image as a floppy drive) with the drivers for a

If I remember my 3.5 days change your controller to the Buslogic and
windows should find the controller and disk just fine without any extra

Or load the floppy image that comes along with the server and it will
have your drivers.

IIS 0 day in File parsing, heads up.

2009-12-28 Thread Ziots, Edward

Microsoft IIS 0Day Vulnerability in Parsing Files (semi-colon bug)

#Application: Microsoft Internet Information Services - IIS (All
versions)

#Impact: Highly Critical for Web Applications

#Finding Date: April 2007

#Report Date: Dec. 2009

#Found by: Soroush Dalili (Irsdl {4t] yahoo [d0t} com)

#Website: Soroush.SecProject.com

#Weblog: Soroush.SecProject.com/blog/

#Thanks From: Mr. Ali Abbas Nejad, Mormoroth, Aria-Security Team, and
other ethical hackers.

#Vulnerability/Risk Description:

 - IIS can execute any extension as an Active Server Page or any other
executable extension. For instance "malicious.asp;.jpg" is executed as
an ASP file on the server. Many file uploaders protect the system by
checking only the last section of the filename as its extension. And by
using this vulnerability, an attacker can bypass this protection and
upload a dangerous executable file on the server.

#Impact Description:

 - Impact of this vulnerability is absolutely high as an attacker can
bypass file extension protections by using a semi-colon after an
executable extension such as ".asp", ".cer", ".asa", and so on.

 - Many web applications are vulnerable against file uploading attacks
because of this weakness of IIS. In a measurement which was performed in
summer 2008 on some of the famous web applications, 70 percent of the
secure file uploaders were bypassed by using this vulnerability.

#Method of Finding:

 - Simple fuzzer by using ASP language itself.

#More Details:

 - In case of having the "malicious.asp;.jpg", web applications consider
it as a JPEG file and IIS consider it as an ASP file and pass it to
"asp.dll". This bug does not work with ASP.Net as the .Net technology
cannot recognize "malicious.aspx;.jpg" as a .Net file and shows a "page
not found" error.

 - Besides using semi-colon, ":" can be used to make an empty file with
any arbitrary extension. For example by uploading "test.asp:.jpg", an
empty ASP file - "test.asp" - would be created on the server on an NTFS
partition. This is only because of "NTFS Alternate Data Streams" and it
is completely different from the semi-colon vulnerability.

#Fast Solution/Recommendation:

 - For Web Developers:

-- Highly Recommended: Use a completely random string as a filename
and set its extension by the web application itself (by using a
"switch-case or select-case" for example) and never accept the user's
input as the filename.

-- Only accept alpha-numerical strings as the filename and its
extension.

 - For Webmasters:

-- Remove "execute" permission from the upload directories
(folders).

#Proof of Concept/Exploit:

 - Many of the web applications can be exploited by using this
vulnerability. We cannot announce their names before the Microsoft
security patch for IIS because of security reasons.

Re: Checking for clean removal of application

InstallWatch will show you changes to a system for file system and
registry. Basically, it performs a snapshot, installs the app, and then a
post-install analysis. I think you'd still have to manually check the
system after the uninstall though, so maybe not exactly what you need.

Checking for clean removal of application

2009-12-28 Thread Christopher Bodnar
We have an application that installs an agent on a server. We want to test
to see how cleanly the agent is removed after uninstalling it. Does it
remove all the registry entries, all the files , all the registered DLLs,
etc..

Anyone have suggestions for tools to use? I've thought of using WinDiff to
compare pre and post for the registry, but not sure about the other stuff.
