[orkut-developer] Re: App Reviewer issue. Want to send a complaint to Google

2012-07-30 Thread anatoly
Hi Bruno

My app got approved around July 4
but I was not aware of it until last week since I didn't get any
notification.

I think that I've even mistakenly submitted a Google doc application per
new guidelines - I hope it will be dismissed since the app was actually
online 3 weeks before the new submission process was introduced.

thanks for your help

 Hi Bruno,

Will the Orkut team work on resolving the Adsense crawler problems? In
order for app developers to support Orkut we need to make money on the
platform. To make money we need targeted ads. If Google's Adsense crawler
can't crawl pages then those ads have very low rpm.

At one point I know the Google Adsense for Games team was using Orkut user
profile data to target ads on application pages. I know because we use
Adsense for Games on BuddyPoke.. But I'm guessing, based on the drop of rpm
that Orkut is now completely blocking Adsense's crawlers, including Adsense
for Games? Why can't Google Adsense servers access Google Orkut pages?

 Please help?

Following this thread discussion let me clarify the main issue:

 *.orkut.gmodules.com/gadgets

urls are behind a login so adsense crawler can't access these pages while

If it is unable to crawl using adsense ads is not effective on app pages.

 Is there any workaround?
It is impossible to define a crawler login for google hosted urls in

isn't this warning spurious? That is, the fact that Application.aspx is

 Or am I mistaken?

Just ask Adsense team how much crawler errors do they get on

Since the crawler is not an Orkut user, this redirection would not
happen and it would never see /Application or any other page. At least
 that's how it *should* happen :-) I've tested /PublicAppInfo

[orkut-developer] App Reviewer issue. Want to send a complaint to Google

2012-06-12 Thread anatoly
Hello guys

I'd like to send a complaint to Google's main office about the fact that
Orkut team obviously mishandles the App reviewer issue.

App Reviewer on Orkut is under maintenance for more than 3 months. There
is no ETA.
It is impossible to submit new apps. There are no new features on the
platform introduced during a long period of time.

See previous discussion on App Reviewer here:
https://groups.google.com/d/msg/opensocial-orkut/-/9yROvQb8w1sJ

I want to submit a detailed complaint about this issue to the main Google
office to managers and/or developer advocates
who superwise Orkut team. If you have contacts or quick channel please post
below or send me a direct reply.

your help is much appreciated.
thanks

Hey guys

Can you share details what exactly happened with the app reviewer?
It's taking very long time. Why is it taking very long time to fix?

thanks

2012-04-09 Thread anatoly
Hi Bruno

thanks for reply.

It happens in Google Chrome only, but it seems like the most popular
browser on orkut I think...

I use it for navigation with parameters, i.e.

var canvas_view = new gadgets.views.View(canvas);

gadgets.views.requestNavigateTo(canvas_view, params);

and then on the page I use it, i.e. to get parameter

var navigatedParams = gadgets.views.getParams();

everything works though, it's just an alert that bothers users.

thanks

[orkut-developer] Re: robots.txt issue on orkut.com.br - blocking adsense crawler

2012-03-15 Thread anatoly
Hi Bruno

there are several issues:
1) users should not land on /Application.aspx at all. You have an issue
with url rewriting in implementation of

gadgets.views.requestNavigateTo(canvas_view, params);
this call land on /Application.aspx
rather than on /Application

this should be fixed, I think it influences the crawler.

2) I'm not sure either /Application.aspx or /Application are behind the
login. Should they be behind the login? It's on the part of the app to
check the viewer, and if it is null
it should display a link to install, I think that is the flow explained to
us by orkut team over the years, (i.e. there should not be automatic
redirect to install page).

3) I'm getting also a lot of adsense crawler errors that the content is
behind the login on urls of the type:
http://682hjovlc0q8jnnr2ueel60s3q6v6sjc.a.orkut.gmodules.com/gadgets/ifr?url=http
...
http://k0bd715biegqe7vcf80atgebi24ng48e.a.orkut.gmodules.com/gadgets*
/ifr?url=http*...
http://o4c1teg8q13go818l55a4f0shnhr6r12.a.orkut.gmodules.com/gadgets*
/ifr?url=http*...
http://1kkb0un3av50ln5f3963qgkj20jmneil.a.orkut.gmodules.com/gadgets*
/ifr?url=http*http://1kkb0un3av50ln5f3963qgkj20jmneil.a.orkut.gmodules.com/gadgets/ifr?url=http
**...

etc.

Adsense crawler can crawl over authenticated pages if it can land on them,
i.e. if there is no redirect, etc.

I get thousands of crawler errors from adsense to fix, while you should get
them and not orkut developers since it is entirely out of developer's
control.
Since adsense and orkut is the same company, I think it depends on your
teams cooperation to resolve it and improve adsense quality. At the end of
the day google would earn more if there are more relevant adsense ads.

thanks

 Hello,

So, I've been discussing this with the engineers here. Adsense crawlers

isn't this warning spurious? That is, the fact that Application.aspx is

 Or am I mistaken?

I think it crawls the page where the ad markup appears plus sometimes

Adsense cralwer errors are reported to the publisher, so I can see where
it fails. If you need any info let mwe know.

The minimum orkut team should do is fix the bug of requestNavigateTo
 implementation

Currently requestNavigateTo redirects to /Application.aspx instead of
/Application and it blocks adsense crawler.
I'd suggest to work closely with adsense team, you're the same
company, I can't coordinate your internal cooperation.
Just ask Adsense team how much crawler errors do they get on
google.com.br, I bet there are billions.

Please fix and update, otherwise it makes counterproductive to use
 adsense on apps.

We do not plan to modify robots.txt at the moment... but as far as I

/PublicAppInfo does *not* automatically redirect to /Application

Since the crawler is not an Orkut user, this redirection would not
happen and it would never see /Application or any other page. At least
that's how it *should* happen :-) I've tested /PublicAppInfo myself
while not logged in (which mimics the way the adsense crawler would see
 it)
and indeed it does not perform any redirections that I could tell...

[orkut-developer] How to promote an app on Orkut

2012-03-15 Thread anatoly
Hello Orkut team

I'd like to promote my app on orkut with ad campaign.
From what I've seen it is possible to run ad campaigns on Orkut via Google
Adwords, but it is only possible to promote external sites this way.

I'm interested to promote my app on Orkut from within Orkut.

How should I proceed?

thanks

[orkut-developer] Re: robots.txt issue on orkut.com.br - blocking adsense crawler

2012-03-08 Thread anatoly
Hi Bruno

thanks for the update

Please update this thread if you make any decisions or changes about this.
I think it crawls the page where the ad markup appears plus sometimes the
parent page if it the former is iframe.
Adsense cralwer errors are reported to the publisher, so I can see where it
fails. If you need any info let mwe know.

thanks

 Hello,

Thanks for the explanation, it clarified the finer points of how the

landing page only, not the page on which the ad appears. We'll look into
 it. Thanks!

The minimum orkut team should do is fix the bug of requestNavigateTo
 implementation

Currently requestNavigateTo redirects to /Application.aspx instead of
/Application and it blocks adsense crawler.
I'd suggest to work closely with adsense team, you're the same company, I
 can't coordinate your internal cooperation.
Just ask Adsense team how much crawler errors do they get on
google.com.br, I bet there are billions.

Please fix and update, otherwise it makes counterproductive to use
 adsense on apps.

Since the crawler is not an Orkut user, this redirection would not

2012-01-23 Thread anatoly
Hi Bruno

I see the same order.
But what criteria it is based on now - just weekly visits?
So all visits equal e.g. 1 sec visit = half hour visit?

See this article Demystifying the app ranking criteria in orkut?
http://googlecode.blogspot.com/2010/08/demystifying-app-ranking-criteria-in.html
By Prashant Tiwari and Tiago Silveira, orkut Team

it seems very different now than what is described. Can you officially
clarify the new criteria?

thanks

[orkut-developer] Re: Stats not updated

2012-01-21 Thread anatoly
I'm sorry but what you just did is ranking based on weekly users.
It's totally wrong. Weekly users maybe one of the factors.

Once you had a sophisticated formula with weights of page impressions. What
happened to that formula?
You should also count the time spent on the app per user per visit - this
is the measurement of the quality of the app.

Ranking based simply on weekly users is wrong and people will outspam and
game the system.

[orkut-developer] Re: robots.txt issue on orkut.com.br - blocking adsense crawler

2012-01-03 Thread anatoly
I'm not sure it is related solely to requestNavigateTo

there are several app urls

1) orkut links (for example from profile page)
http://www.orkut.com/Main#Application?uid=1234appId=1234

2) PublicAppInfo
http://www.orkut.com/Main#PublicAppInfo?appId=1234
which redirects to
http://www.orkut.com/Main#Application?appId=1234
(which is similar to #1)

3) orkut implementation of OpenSocial method requestNavigateTo
goes to
*http://www.orkut.com/Application.aspx?appId=1234appParams=bla*http://www.orkut.com/Application.aspx?appId=1234appParams=bla
which briefly redirects to
http://www.orkut.com/Main#Application.aspx?appId=1234appParams=bla

adsense crawler reports errors on
http://www.orkut.com/Application.aspx
and
*http://www.orkut.com/Application*

since /Application.aspx and /Application are blocked by robots.txt
These are real urls before url rewrite so somehow it might be related to
url rewrite on orkut.

In any case you can just solve it by adding
User-agent: Mediapartners-Google
Disallow:

to robots txt (or just allow /Application.aspx and /Application for
Mediapartners-Google) which will not effect other crawlers
It will be in any case for Google's benefit (and for developers benefit).

[orkut-developer] Re: robots.txt issue on orkut.com.br - blocking adsense crawler

2012-01-03 Thread anatoly
In any case unrelated to crawlers error you can unify
*/Main#Application.aspx?appId=1234appParams=bla*
**
with
*/Main#Application?appId=1234appParams=bla*
**
as
*/Main#Application*
**
is a standard scheme on orkut and only requestNavigateTo uses
Application.aspx

[orkut-developer] Re: robots.txt issue on orkut.com.br - blocking adsense crawler

2012-01-03 Thread anatoly
Hello Bruno
Google Adsense crawler crawls the page where the ad tag is placed - it is
on the application page
which is an iframe on orkut, when the crawler sees that the page is the
iframe it attempts to crawl it's parent page
(in our case it is /Application, /Application.aspx) which is blocked by
robots.txt.

Somehow it detects that the page is /Application and not /Main#Application.
I suspect the issue might be with url rewriting from /Application to
/Main#Application

I suggest to at least change requestNavigateTo implementation to redirect
to
/Main#Application instead of /Main#Application.aspx to make it standard.

Otherwise .aspx looks like a redundant orkut url format for pages.

2012-01-02 Thread anatoly
Hello Bruno

I'm using PublicAppInfo everywhere, however I'm also
using requestNavigateTo and this method navigates to Application.aspx
(which is closed to crawlers)

var canvas_view = new gadgets.views.View(canvas);

gadgets.views.requestNavigateTo(canvas_view, params);

Can you check this please? Based on your info sounds like the bug is in the
implementation of requestNavigateTo.

Does it make sense?

there you see apps published by you, you also need to add them to your

[orkut-developer] robots.txt issue on orkut.com.br - blocking adsense crawler

2011-11-17 Thread anatoly
To orkut team:

Since last week due to some issue on robots.txt in orkut.com.br google
adsense crawler has troubles reaching applications pages on the site.
Which causes less targeted ads and less revenue for devwelopers and for
google.

This is the email we got from adsense:

We noticed that our AdSense ad crawler is having some difficulty crawling
some parts of your site on orkut.com.br. Specifically, we've detected
696,147 failed crawl requests over a 4-day period last week, which is
caused by an issue within your robots.txt file. Essentially, this file is
blocking certain sections of your site from our AdSense ad crawler. Because
of this, your AdSense ads are less targeted and are generating less revenue
on average.

Fortunately, you can fix this issue today by editing your robots.txt file
and giving our AdSense ad crawler the ability to view your site. To do
this, find your robots.txt file, located at orkut.com.br/robots.txt and add
the following two lines at the very top:

User-agent: Mediapartners-Google
Disallow:

Please add the above lines to robots.txt.
Please note this change will not affect search and is only related to
adsense crawler.

thanks a lot

I checked main orkut and sandbox now in IE9 and it looks working ok.

[orkut-developer] Re: sandbox updated

2011-07-16 Thread anatoly
Sandbox seems completely broken on IE9.

There is an error message only secure content is displayed and then IE9
blocks most of the page.
Same behavior on homepage and on application pages.

Working fine on FF.

[orkut-developer] Issue with requestNavigateTo with params on Chrome browser

2011-05-17 Thread anatoly
Hello

There is currently an issue which happens on Google Chrome only but
works fine on IE and Firefox. When I navigate to canvas using
different params, i.e.:

var canvas_view = new gadgets.views.View(canvas);
gadgets.views.requestNavigateTo(canvas_view, params);

there is a warning popup on Chrome:
You are leaving orkut. Be suspicious of external websites that ask for
account information.

or

Você está saindo do orkut. Suspeite de sites externos que peçam
informações de sua conta.

while the navigation is not leaving orkut, just navigates back to the
same canvas with diff params.

Happens on Chrome only. Please fix.

[orkut-developer] Ads rendering and a new parser on orkut

2011-05-05 Thread anatoly
Hi

Since the new parser was announced on orkut I don't see significant
issues except one which I'm not 100% sure it is related.

We've noticed that there are less ad views reported for google adsense
we host on our orkut apps. This started after the new parser was
announced on orkut.

I wonder if this is related or did anyone else noticed something
similar?

We have similar traffic numbers as before, however our ad reports
numbers dropped. This happens only on orkut for us. In addition there
is now a huge discrepancy in numbers reported between 2 different ad
units on the same page (which did not happen before).

We have similar setup on other platforms, but we observe this behavior
on orkut only and it just started recently.

If anyone from orkut team can comment it would be helpful.

thanks

[orkut-developer] Re: IMPORTANT: Name Collision Protection launching! Don't change the title of your app!

2011-05-05 Thread anatoly
Hi Bruno

It once happened to me that I reported about a malicious app via DMCA
and the genuine original app was disabled by mistake instead of the
malicious one. It took 3-4 days to restore the app.

My point is that in the case of false positive (i.e. disabling both
apps or original app instead of malicious due to some bug or outage) -
the price is too high.

thanks

wrote:
 Hi,

We've tested it a lot in our labs and we're pretty sure it will work well.
The signal that triggers the check is changing the app's title (in any
language). So if you don't change your title, there is no way your app will
 be taken down.

Question: what about existing applications that have name conflicts?

They will not be checked unless they change their names. If there are
existing applications with conflicting names, we have no way to decide which
one is the right one, so we won't take down any of them. The only way to
take down an existing app that has a name that belongs to you is to file a
 DMCA complaint.

*TL;DR Summary of this post, if you are in a hurry:*

*Good news:* your application is now under increased protection against
 malicious apps!

*Caveats:* Don't change the title of your application. Any title changes
will trigger the new name collision prevention algorithm, and if your new
title is found to collide with another existing application, your
 application will be removed immediately.

 Attention Developers:

Starting Friday (May 6), we will start enforcing our brand-new *name clash
protection* for live applications. Please read the information below to make
sure you do not accidentally cause your application to be removed without
 notice.

 *Name Collision Protection*
 *
 *
 *1. How does it work?*
 *
 *

Whenever an application changes its title, in any languages, our automatic
application reviewer (AppReviewer) will now test the new titles against all
other live applications in our database. If it detects a name collision, the
application whose title changed *will be taken down immediately and without
any human review or prior notification*.

*2. Why are you doing this?*
 *
 *

We're doing this in order to protect live applications from malicious apps
that change their names in order to confuse users. This new algorithm will
catch any live applications that change their names in a way that conflicts
with the name of a live application. This means your legitimate application
now enjoys increased protection, since fake applications will have a hard
 time copying your name!

*3. Can you give an example of the intended effect of this change?*
 *
 *

Suppose you have a very successful app called Qwertyuiop. And suppose
another developer, your rival, has an application called Asdfghjkl, that
is poorly written and no one uses it. Now, suppose this malicious user wants
to steal your success -- he renames his application to Qwertyuiop 2:
Reloaded Deluxe Edition, hoping to trick users into thinking his app is an
upgrade to yours. With the new Name Collision Protection, this will no
longer be possible: AppReviewer would notice his application changed its
title and would detect that its new title conflicts with an existing
application, Qwertyuiop, and the malicious app would be taken down *
 immediately*. Isn't that great news?

*4. So when do two names collide?*
 *
 *

Names collide when they are substantially similar -- similar enough to
confuse the user who is doing a search for example.

 *5. Are all names protected?*
 *
 *

No. Only names consisting of 8 or more characters are protected. Smaller
 names are not protected.

*6. Is there an exception for applications from the same developer?*
 *
 *

Yes, applications submitted by the same developer (this means the account
that *submitted *the app, not the account that is listed as the author!) can
have similar names. This means that the developer who published Qwertyuiop
is allowed to publish Qwertyuiop 2 Reloaded. But no one else is.

*7. Why won't the developer be notified before his app is taken down because
 of a name collision?*
 *
 *

Because this would give a malicious developer time to profit from name
frauds. So, as a security measure, no prior notice will be sent.

*8. How can I make sure my app is not taken down for this?*
 *
 *

It's simple: Don't change the title of your app. Ever. There are very few
legitimate uses for this, so we presume that an app that has changed its
name is probably up to no good.

*9. Can I predict that a name won't conflict by doing a search?*
 *
 *

No. Our name clash algorithm is stricter than a simple text search, so even
if the name seems to be available when you do a regular search, it may
actually conflict with something that the search didn't show you, and this
will cause your application to be taken down. Again, see advice [8]: don't
 change your title. Ever.

Also, I've noticed that some malicious developers, use just a
portuguese translation of the name if for example original name is in
english and trademarked.

Also I'd like to mention that there are cases when there are official
trademarked names for certain games and there are devs whose apps are
older and have some user base but violate trademarks, and the original
trademark owner joins orkut later with their game. What to do in this
case?

[orkut-developer] Re: AppReviewer now checking live apps -- you may receive e-mails!

2011-02-22 Thread anatoly
today I got another series of identical emails which look like so:

- The app took too long to load. Some of the possible reasons for this
are:
(1) perhaps you are displaying a modal dialog (popup). If this is the
case, please remove the popup;
(2) perhaps the code that executes when the page loads is taking too
long to finish. Are you doing too much processing? An infinite loop?
Are you performing a synchronousoperation involving the network?;
(3) perhaps you are trying to load too many resources (images, media,
scripts, etc). Perhaps it's best to cut back on resources or load them
later instead of trying to do that when the page is first shown;
(4) there might be a vulnerability in the way user-generated-content
is rendered, that is, perhaps there is a way to exploit your
application to make it run arbitrary code. Please sanitize all user-
generated content, including names, comments, messages, titles and
other fields.

I checked and all mentioned apps are loading just fine and fast. It
looks like another false positive.
Not to mention no popups are used and also some of the apps in uestion
are so light that do not use external scripts or any images - and yet
I get these emails. Other apps do use scripts and images but that
should not be an issue since modern sites all use images. All images
are cached btw.

Is it neccessary to send this kind of emails?

[orkut-developer] Re: New features: configurable app width and container version!

2011-02-21 Thread anatoly
Hi Bruno

Can you please clarify, if I don't change anything the width would be
835 as it is today?
Is it correct?

thanks

On Feb 22, 5:04 am, Bruno Oliveira (\btco\) bru...@google.com
wrote:
 Hello orkut developers,

We now support two cool new features for gadgets in canvas view:

    - Container version detection
    - Flexible application width

A quick introduction follows. We hope you enjoy them! They're enabled on
sandbox and should reach production soon. If you have any feedback, please
 let us know!

 *Container Version Detection*
The Container Version is supplied to your gadget in a new iframe parameter
(containerVersion) in canvas view, so it can be retrieved like this:

 var containerVersion = gadgets.util.getUrlParameters()[containerVersion];

Its value is 1 for the canvas view container in the old orkut UI and 2 for
the canvas view container in the new orkut UI. You can read this to
determine which container your application is running inside of. Please be
aware, however, that container version is not the same as orkut UI
version... for now, there is a 1-to-1 correspondence (1 for old orkut, 2
for new orkut) but this may come out of sync when we launch new container
 versions or new UIs.

 *Configurable App Width*
That's right, we now support configurable width for applications in canvas
 view!
You can specify a preferred width to orkut in your applications XML by
means of the preferred_width attribute of the Content tag:

 ?xml version=1.0 encoding=UTF-8?
 Module
    ModulePrefs title=Yourtitlehere
       author=authorhere
       author_email=email_h...@..com
       description=Description here
       screenshot=http://url/of/a/screenshot/of/your/app;
       thumbnail=http://url/of/the/thumbnail/for/your/app;
       Require feature=opensocial-0.8 /
       Locale lang=en country=us /
    /ModulePrefs
 Content type=html *preferred_width=900*
 ![CDATA[

 ...

 /Content
 /Module

The container will try to allocate your indicated width but might have to
crop it if it's too big and expand it if it's too small. The actual width
will be reported to you in the gadgetWidth iframe parameter.

Some points to take into account are:

    - The preferred_width parameter will only be taken into account when
rendering your application on container version 2, but will be ignored in
    container version 1.

    - The container might or might not honor your preferred width depending
    on the available space.

    - The gadgetWidth iframe parameter is only available to your application
in container version 2 and above. This is the slight catch we were
 talking
    about above.

Therefore, the correct way to determine your application's actual width is
first testing the container version and then, if the version is 2 or above,
reading the gadgetWidth parameter. Otherwise (container version 1), the
width of the gadget is fixed at 835px. So an example of Javascript code
 would be:

// Determines the actual width of the application
 function getActualWidth() {
    return (gadgets.util.getUrlParameters()[containerVersion] = 2) ?
              gadgets.util.getUrlParameters()[gadgetWidth] : 835;

[orkut-developer] Re: AppReviewer now checking live apps -- you may receive e-mails!

I got a couple of emails about similar name of exisitng apps.
It is definitely false positive since at the time of creation (long

So what gives this check? Let's suppose it is working properly - then
the copy-cat developer receives such a message
he can just change the title and get away with it.

any thoughts?

So, if you have apps live on orkut, you may start receiving e-mails from
AppReviewer alerting you of problems in your applications and saying that
 your application failed review.

Don't panic: during this test period, live applications that fail review by
AppReviewer will not be taken down because of that. But regardless, you
should pay attention to the e-mail and apply the necessary corrections on
your application to ensure that it will survive review when we bring
 AppReviewer up for real.

We have also considerably improved the messages that AppReviewer sends you,

[orkut-developer] regarding [KNOWN ISSUE #K08] profile view temporary disabled

2011-02-07 Thread anatoly
http://groups.google.com/group/opensocial-orkut/browse_frm/thread/dc1a3b918e75eee6

To orkut team:

1) There is no explanation why profile view is disabled for apps.
2) We don't have clear dates when it is going to be disabled or any
ETA when is it going to be enabled.
Last time profile views had been disabled it lasted half year (in 2009
afaik).

Developers are loosing traffic and we don't get any exaplanation from
orkut why such vital sources of traffic as profile views are disabled
on the live site or why don't we get any ETA.

Waiting for some clarifications...

thanks!

[orkut-developer] Re: News about Activity Stream!

2011-02-02 Thread anatoly
What FB does is much more sophisticated than that, i.e. they can group
activities from several apps for the same user if commited during a
short period of time. If then there is half hour delay between new
activities - those go ungroupped (or groupped in a new group).

Also: it will be unfair to give all apps the same amount of 1 activity
visible. Let's take a big app with lots of content where users spend
1-2 hours playing every day and making many different activities, and
some small app where users spend 1 minute of their time. If both have
the same 1 activity visible I think that would be incorrect.

1) a link generated by orkut in the body of email links to AppInfo

[orkut-developer] Re: NEWS: AppInfo page now smartly redirects to Canvas page

so activity via link redirects to app canvas, is this correct?

On Dec 12, 8:21 am, Bruno Oliveira bru...@google.com wrote:
It's best to attract users to the app info page.
That way they will be correctly redirected.

Remember that applications still have a guest mode, which happens when
a user who does not have the app views it on someone else's profile (he
can arrive there through the via link, for instance). That's what you
get when you land in the canvas view of an app on someone else's
profile and you don't have it installed.

The recommended practice is that applications should have a guest mode
in which the user can get a feel for the application without installing
it. Applications must not redirect guest users from Canvas Page to the
App Info page. Users who like the app in guest mode should install it
using the Add App button on the frame (the app can help by pointing
it out to the user, but the app must not force him to click it).
