[osol-discuss] chroot environment and mknod in a zone
I'm trying to create a chroot environment within a zone so that I can run a separate sshd process within it that is configured to use a separate LDAP server from the main system passwd DB. I have a script to create a chroot environment but it uses mknod to create devices which fails because mknod does not run in a zone. Does anyone have ideas on a workaround? Is it possible to create the chroot environment in the global zone and then access it from the local zone? -Edwin This message posted from opensolaris.org ___ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org

Thank you in advance, Not sure if pstack does that on S9, but you can always move the corefile over to opensolaris and have a look there; the syntax is (example): # pstack 143/25 143:/usr/sbin/nscd - lwp# 25 / thread# 25 fed31b97 nanosleep (fd39df80, fd39df88) 0805cbda reaper (80a4348) + 1ba fed2e652 _thr_setup (fe9cc200) + 52 fed2e8b0 _lwp_start (fe9cc200, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0) nscd on my box has 31 threads, the above shows the stack for the 25th. If you've got a corefile, just pstack core/id will do ? FrankH. ___ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org
[osol-discuss] [SVOSUG] Project Nitro, Venue Change to Mansion/SCA07, Thursday 04/24/08
For this month's meeting we have a change of venue, just across the road from the Santa Clara Auditorium, we will be meeting in SCA07, known as the Mansion. This is a very special venue, and I will remind our community that we will be using one of California historical buildings, no different than the auditorium, but this is where the Governor stayed when he visited the Agnew campus. Sun did a wonderful job at restoring this building, and we would like to ensure that we are able to continue using it in the future. As such, please help us tread lightly inside. The rooms are smaller in the Mansion, but there are more than one, so we can spread out if needed. The intent is that it will be easier to manage the lighting for the video and hold the meeting in a different, more intimate setting. The alarm can't be disarmed, so you will need to knock on the door and one of us will open it for you. The Mansion is located almost directly across from the Santa Clara Auditorium, in the smaller building located to the left of the large structure directly across the street. Use the same parking along Palm, and in the parking lots. The Mansion also has an ice machine in the kitchen, where we can host the beverages and snacks for the meeting. The first presentation will be given by Jonathan Chew and Sasha Kolbasov, explaining Project Nitro. Project Nitro was a performance project to speed up the builds, to better parellelize the build process to use the system more efficiently. Build times have dropped down on x86 and sparc both, and I'll let Jonathan and Sasha give real world numbers. I'm seeing about 15-20 percent improvement on x86 and more on sparc myself. Jonathan and Sasha will explain to you how they went about this project, which is most applicable to many processes on OpenSolaris where similar improvements could also be achieved. We will be broadcasting over the web through ustream, and you can get the embedded window on the SVOSUG project page of OpenSolaris.org. Please join us over the web if you can't make it in person. When: Thursday, April 24, 2008 Where: Sun's Santa Clara Campus Auditorium (SCA07, the Mansion) What: Project Nitro, better performance with better parellelization Time: 7:30pm-10:00pm Google Maps: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=qhl=enq=4070+George+Sellon+Circle,+Santa+Clara,+CA+95054ie=UTF8z=16om=1iwloc=addr Web: http://opensolaris.org/os/project/svosug/ Hope to see you there, and if not, hope you see us! -- Alan DuBoff - Solaris x86 IHV/OEM Group ___ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org

Re: [osol-discuss] Is there a change list for the upcoming
Support for using ZFS as the root filesystem was added in build 88, but there is not yet support for installing Solaris to a ZFS filesystem in the installer. This is expected soon - possibly build 90. If you want ZFS root support, wait for build 88 and use jumpstart to perform an install. If you don't like this idea, then another month or so should see support added to the installer. Cheers Andrew. [osol-discuss] Hats Off to SXCE Developers : Very Impressed by Compiz on SXCE B87
Just installed Solaris Express Community Edition ( sol-nv-b87-x86-dvd.iso ) on a HP desktop (Nvidia FX 5200) and I was happily surprised to see that Compiz was working right after the installation without any juggling (and it was installed by default). Now I don't know if SXCE always had Compiz + Nvidia support built-in or not... ( I have installed S10 and SXDE many times but don't recall seeing Compiz in either one) Since I've played around with quite a few Linux distros very recently, I was almost shocked to see Compiz effects working right out of the box in Solaris. The only little thing I changed was Visual Effects: from None to Custom under Preferences Appearance and voila. When I looked in System Tools NVIDIA X Server Settings, the latest 169.12 drivers were installed already. Haven't used SXCE much but with a new Firefox 3 and VLC Player (would love to see VLC as a default multimedia player), I guess I can make Solaris my default desktop. - Jags This message posted from opensolaris.org ___ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org

[osol-discuss] Triple Boot with OpenSolaris as 3rd OS
Thank you for reading my post. I was wondering if any member of this forum can help me with the following query: I have an Intel system (desktop) with three HDDs having dual-boot configuration...with Windows 2003 Server on the first hard-disk, Ubuntu Linux on the second third HD being blank as of now. My bootloader is GRUB and I have been thinking of installing OpenSolaris on the last remaining drive. I am in a quandry as to if I go ahead with OpenSolaris installation, will Solaris' default bootloader overwrite the existing GRUB render my system useless...;) or is it that during installation Solaris will give me option for going on with the existing bootloader...I am just confused and want to make sure that I understand things in this regard before proceeding ahead. Do you think that adding an entry corresponding to OpenSolaris on 3rd HDD in GRUB's menu.lst file will be sufficient after I have completed the installation. Thanks! No, because last I knew Grub as shipped by most linux distro's doesn't understand how to boot Solaris. Re: [osol-discuss] Triple Boot with OpenSolaris as 3rd OS
At the present time, Solaris installation will overwrite your MBR. You can edit and use your /boot/grub/menu.lst file in Solaris to add chainloader(s) to boot into Windows (already created) and Linux (to be created by you). But if you want to keep your Linux version of the GRUB, one of the easiest tricks that I have been using is to follow the following procedure: 1. While in Linux before installing Solaris, edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file to add a chainloader to the partition in which Solaris is to be installed, title Solaris root (hd0,2) chainloader +1 (the above entry assumes that Solaris is to be installed into the third primary partition) 2. Copy the Master Boot Record to a particular directory in your USB stick (say, /media/usb/mbr_linux): # dd if=/dev/sda of=/media/usb/mbr_linux bs=512 count=1 3. After installing and booting into Solaris, copy this file back to MBR: # dd if=/media/usb/mbrsuse of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1 4. Do a reboot, the Ubuntu GRUB boot screen will show up, you can then boot into either Solaris or Ubuntu (or Windows). Thank you for reading my post.
