Note that when the Squeezebox Radio is running on AC power by

Hi, you must try the following. Fix your sound skeeme, then open total

they can trase it. Only after the file is saved, you can close total

I finally got my ls14. Its very intresting how olympus make changes
compared to the older models. I found now some good knews. The voice
files wich make the recorder talk is no longer in the build in memory.
In older models you had to backup the voice guidance folder and
restore it after a format, or you needed to use the pc software to
upload the speech files back to the recorder. But now its no longer
the case. You can format without worries. All the other system files
will be gone, but not the speech files. So after restarting the
recorder or connecting and disconnecting again from pc, it should
now recreate the system read-only files again and you good to go.
Another thing wich I am very excited about is that the newer models
including the ls100 and ls14 now really contain the driver needed to
be seen by windows to enable it to be use the microphones of the
recorder on the pc. With older models you also had the ability to
record on the pc using the mics, but the problem was that you could
only use that feature from within the provided pc software. And if
you look under control panel you won't see it listed under your
input and output devices. Now, the software is no longer used it
seems, and you can now select the mic in windows and wich ever software
 you use to record.
And it work very wel. The ls14 also has a metronoom. Unfortunetly
the settings for the metronoom don't speak. But I found an easy way
to deal with this. I hope to do a podcast soon about that. I stil
want to test line in as I really like the fact that it have a
deticated line in jack. I like it that now this recorder have a moad
dile wich you can turn to switch to different recording moads. So
the option to switch from manual to auto gain is no longer in the
menus, as you use the wheel to move among them. The tuner don't seem
accessible. But I don't care about that anyway. It uses dubble A

Wel, the dm range cannot record such high quality. The highest with
them is 16bit48kbps on wave. Its only the ls models wich can go til
 24bit96khz. The
520 and other dm models can be used as a microphone on pc, but the
problem is that its not vissable to windows. You can only record
with it using the sonority software. Wel that is what I found with my

In older models you had to backup the voice guidance folder and

Another thing wich I am very excited about is that the newer models

Re: Recording Via Computer?

2013-05-31 Thread Aidan Maher
Total recorder is much easier than audacity and alike, you must do a
test recording from the build in low end soundcart and see if that is
good enough. Otherwise, you might want a better external soundcard and
you would then need to set it up and afterwords tel total recorder to
record from that card. If you want to put tapes on your pc, another
option could be to buy a USB tape player, they come in differend
brands and forms. for example: ion tape express wich connect via
USB. This way you can avoid an external sound card and tel total
recorder to record from the USB tape device. If you have peaces of
silence in the recording, or any unwanted audio, you can select the
audio and then delete it.

On 31/05/2013, Antonio Guimaraes freethau...@gmail.com wrote:
I would recommend Total Recorder. You'll have to set things up to
record from the line in, and run tests to make sure the recording
 levels are loud enough.

You'll need some way to monitor the recording so you're not recording
dead air after the tape is done.

Total recorder does have a mode where it only records when there is
sound streaming. This feature works well for recording online videos.
It removes any cut outs in the sstream.

Total recorder is a little hard to set up, but runs very well once you
 get it going.

 Good luck.

can I do that and what software I need to accomplish this task? I have
Total Recorder if that can be used for that.
One more question, a friend of mine records material for me by reading it
to cassette recorder but now I want him to record on computer. what sort
of hardware and software we need for that? can he eddit his recording
 too?

 Thanks!
 Regards,
 Fazil.

Re: Victor Reader Stream New Generation Review

2013-05-28 Thread Aidan Maher
Wel, you can always get the stratus, it doesn't have the same problems
the stream currently have, and it have a very sexy speaker.

On 28/05/2013, Gary King w4...@bellsouth.net wrote:
There is a review of the Victor Reader Stream (New Generation) in the April
 2013 Issue of AccessWorld

The review mentions a tone that is present on recordings made by the new
Stream in all recording formats. If anyone on the list owns the new Stream
or has heard recordings made by one, I would like to know how seriously this
 tone degrades recordings.

I would also be interested to hear a longer sample of the Acapela speech
used in the new Stream than the sample on the Humanware web site. After
putting up with the mispronunciation issues in the Neospeech used in the
BookSense for nearly 4 years, I want to know what to expect from the new
Stream when reading various types of documents.

I am considering a purchase in the near future, and I don't want any bad
surprises if I decide to spend my $369.

I'm not sure if you mean price wise, but in that case, I would say
quite good. We are now moving to a situation where you can buy a
$300/$500 recorder with components inside wich is werth a few hundreds
of dollars or more. And it is the among a few accessible options out
there. And the latest models improved on that, and prices are
sometimes a bit lower, sometimes a bit higher depending on the model
and microphones and pre amps being used.

Yes, the ls12 don't talk and it only have 2 mics wile the ls14 speak

recorder and can also record bloo ray quality. I stil wood want the
ls100 if I can, but I also just wanted the ls14 because of the
dedicated line in jac. I stil love the xlr jacs on the 100 and the
fact that it have both a limiter and compressor instead of just a
limmitor. But I want to try and see how many times I can overdub with
the ls14. I can do another podcast in a wile with samples of both
recorders and hopefully I can figure out the metronoom. At least the
14 uses dubble A batteries.

Subject: A bit of Dm520 help please?

As many know, I had a stroke back in 2011 and my memory for things
I haven't done in a long time is fuzzy at best.

Enter my Olympus Dm520 whose batteries are doornail dead.

Well it seems to work flawlessly when plugged into the pc, but not
 so the operator.

What are the buttons avove and below the cursor keys? Which are
 the number
9 and 0 keys refered to in the manual?
The manual is here on cd but I can't remember the button layout on
the front. Can't remember how to set date and time, which I
probably need to do. I go from folder to folder I still know how to
record, but can't remember how to change modes either.

 Many thanks.

Wel, not really big differences. I had to record on the stream since I
con't record and demo at the same time on that recorder, but once I
get the ls14 that problem should be solved. I think the hardware is
quite different but for the firmware part its very similar.

Yes, I agree, I stil wait to see if the ls100 price can drop a little,

multi tracks.

Yes, that quality is great. I also record that on total recorder and

Also good to mention that if you con't afford the zoom or
ls100 or the sound devices, you might also try the ls14 as it also record
 up
to 96-24 bit. I don't mind the overdub and multi track stuff to be equal to
cd quality, as you mostly either burn it on cd afterwords, or just use the
wave file to convert from there and/or use the project in the original
 format.

that person can, then yeah maybe. I want one for the quality. I don't
think I'd use the multitrack thing that much though. On something like
the Sound Devices 788-T I might though. That thing has 8 XLR plugs. So
you can use 8 mikes. Import those into Pro Tools, and you can create
7.1 surround files. Yeah, I'm into
7.1 surround sound. I love surround sound. But yeah. The problem with
all the Sound Devices stuff though is it doesn't talk. I can't deal
with it like Neal can. I'd get lost. I'd have to have some one set it
up for me and then just forget about it. But yeah, back to the LS-100.
I like it well enough, and I do want one, but it's just for the sound
quality, and full LPCM 96 KHZ
24 bit. The sound devices goes the next step up in sample rate though,
they do 192 thousand KHZ. That's way cool.

Yes, I got the focusrite scarlett 2i4 card, and that also dubbles as a
midi interface, very good and really outstanding. I am considering the
ls100 as I get to much latency at the moment and I couldn't solve that
yet, but I have a problem, I am scaired that once I bounce tracks on
that recorder that I won't be able to export everything in one file,
because after you have done 8 tracks you must bounce them in order to
make new space available and to emty the tracks. And the other thing
is I am not sure if you would be able to open that project in audacity

you've heard the few recordings Neal Ewers has made on BCT on his

multitrack thing that much though. On something like the Sound Devices
 788-T
I might though. That thing has 8 XLR plugs. So you can use 8 mikes. Import
those into Pro Tools, and you can create 7.1 surround files. Yeah, I'm into
7.1 surround sound. I love surround sound. But yeah. The problem with all
the Sound Devices stuff though is it doesn't talk. I can't deal with it
 like
Neal can. I'd get lost. I'd have to have some one set it up for me and then
just forget about it. But yeah, back to the LS-100. I like it well enough,
and I do want one, but it's just for the sound quality, and full LPCM 96
 KHZ
24 bit. The sound devices goes the next step up in sample rate though, they
do 192 thousand KHZ. That's way cool.

Wel, their support are sometimes helpfull and sometimes not, not sure
what they up to, but I guess when calling them you will get better
results. So what was the problem with your recorder? I was thinking
later on that maybe you formatted on the pc, and they spisificly say
never format using a pc. Yes the ls100,ls14, ls7,ls3, dm 620 and dm
670 all have voice guidance. But you must be carefull, because the dm
650 and ls12 for example does not have that and when reading the

that.

You can use the free program Freemake Video Converter which is available
 at:

 www.freemake.com

You copy the link of the Youtube page then go to the opened program.

Next go to the edit menu and the only thing there is paste so enter on
 that.

Next go to the convert menu and choose which format to save the video or
 audio.

A dialog will come up. You can set presets or change presets then tab to
... and enter to select where to save the file.

then tab to convert and hit enter.

You may get some warnings or alerts. I don't know what these say since
jaws won't read them. sometimes you will be able to download the Youtube
but some of the videos are blocked. so if you get a warning or alert try a

few more times to make sure if you can download it or not.

make sure you aren't distorting, and there's not much in the defalt

 is
tellyou what the highest sample rate and bit depth your line in
 recordings
can be at. For instance, mine will onlydo 96 thousand KHZ which is fine,
 but
at 16 bit. My laptop on the other hand can do full HD 96 thousand KHZ at
 24

I'm about to start trying to record on my PC, and I've got a couple of
starter questions for the list. I'll be using Goldwave to record and
 edit,
but my question concerns the settings within Windows 7 itself.

Basically, do I need to make any changes to the settings within Recording

 with
the various options in Goldwave? Need I do anything in the Listen tab or
 the
Advanced tab for example? Should the Listen to this Device be checked or
unchecked, and what about the Default Format settings when Running in
 Shared

As you can tell, I'm seeking a guiding hand! Any advice on which options
 to
select in the Recording devices tabs would be much appreciated.

hanging, but I won't go too deep as it maybe off topic. But perhaps not.
Here it is. Basicly the problem is this, heck you can buy them at staples
but it's the ultra 2 ones. The PTR1 and 2 want either type 1 or 2. They
don't like Ultra 2. They lock up when you put one in. That's the company's
falt though. I don't get why the PTR2 didn't accept type Ultra 2 cards
 since
it came out in 2005 I think. Or was it 6? Is it too little too Late? Is
 that
something that they could still fix with firmware if they chose to? Or
 would
they have to reforge the PTR2 to put a new card reader in it? The cards are
essentially the same but for speed. Like I said, Amazon has them, or at
least 2, but one I'm not sure of, and the Sandisk one is $40 for only 4 GB.
IS it just me or does any one here agree that $40 is a little too much for
only 4GB. I actually wander about this too, and this maybe another topic
 for
a whole new thread. Is something like the PTR2 even worth buying anymore?
 Or
is it just just for mastaljicreasons. You know what I mean? It's just cool,
one may just love it just because and for almost just collection purposes
you may want one. But it's $895. With all the limitations and let's be
honest, dying or dead tech in it, is $895 to get it from IRTI even fair
anymore? I don't know if anyone wants to debate this or least make their
views known, but there you have mine. But yeah, to get off the sope box and
back to the main point, you can find the cards, but it's not guarantied the
ones you may find will work.

They don't update the hardware either. But I think if you no why you want

O, ok then I can give it a look. No GoldWave is not what I need now. I
did use it but I then went to audacity. And GoldWave is not free. I'm
talking here about a lighter utility, and total recorder is more
closer to the rite thing. GoldWave and alike is good for editing, but
if you want to quickly capture something in a simpel manor, and to
decide beforehand where it must be saved, that is not something alot
of programs offer. I con't remember if GoldWave have recording
standby, because that will be a problem. I record with it such a long
time ago. I don't actually need it anymore. I switched to audacity
because I needed a multi track recorder, but since it uses its own
project format, that will not do what I want. But if anyone is
intrested, try sonarka recorder. Its not to bad, Just wunder what
people might think of these smaller but handy recording tools.

Re: Latency with Microphones and Soundblaster Audigy Soundcard

2013-01-19 Thread Aidan Maher
Wel, that will depend on each card, you should check the card spex
before you get it. I suggest that since you just need it for general
use. That you must rather buy one of those wich you build in the back
of the pc wich is not atached to the motherboard. That will help alot.
Not only sound wise, but also for driver related stuff. Real tech is
good. Try them. But if you want to buy another nun motherboard card,
then you have wider options.

iTunes leaves your original WMA file alone. I haven't done this
 myself, but
I found this on the web page
 http://www.apple.com/findouthow/music/itunes.html#management-convertwma

Since WMA is a MS proprietary format, requiring Apple to pay MS a
 license,
I'm surprised they do anything with WMA files at all.

I've searched the web for this answer but did not find out. Hope
 someone here knows.

I just installed the latest Itunes. I wanted to add music from
another drive using add folder to library.

 iTunes
One or more of the songs you are adding to iTunes, including “01
 graphic
870 Rubber Bullets [Long Version].wma”, are in the WMA format.
iTunes will automatically convert them to the AAC format so that they
can be added to your iTunes library.
 Convert Skip

I accidently hit escape twice when leaving the Jaws virtual viewer
and missed being able to hit the skip button. Itunes started
processing the library even though I pressed escape? I don't know if
it was skipping or processing all those .wma files. Looks like it
didn't start converting because there were no .aac files found in the
folder when I looked with Windows Explorer search.

I'd thought I'd forgotton to turn on restore previous versions for
that drive after reinstalling Windows 7. I couldn't find a previous
version for the folder. However, I did find previous versions in the
 drive's properties.

I searched for all .aac files on my system and only found one very old.
I right clicked and open with which was not a menu but opened a
dialog that was hard to work with Jaws. I finally got it to see
Itunes but accidently hit enter before unchecking always use this
program to open this type. Itunes didn't open. Now when I right
click that file the open with is a sub menu with Windows Media Player
and Itunes in it. Also choose default program. So, I screwed up once
again. Makes a grown man weap!

I can't believe they would make it hard to import wma files. I have
so many I don't want to convert. I'll have to back them up first. I
hate software that makes me choose without preperation.

 Itunes already sucks!

Can't I keep Itunes from damaging or changing my origenal wma files?
If I check this; Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to
library, will it make converted copies and place them in the Itunes
folder leaving the origenal wma files in their place?

Hi all. Wonder if anyone can please advise. My trusty Olympus DS40
has bitten the dust, so I'm looking for an accessible and affordable
digital recorder to replace it. I'm based in the UK and am mainly
looking to use a future device for interviewing and field recording
for documentaries (music, atmosphere, particular activities such as
sounds from sports training and the like).

Although I have ageneral understanding of production procedures I've
never looked at different devices with their pros and cons, and my
only knowledge in terms of accessible equipment is the Olympus line
(and I don't even know if that's as accessible as it used to be). For
example, I'm used to recording by plugging a proper mic into the
appropriate jack (usually an SM58), but I know that some machines have
dual microphones an I don't know how acceptable the quality of
 internal microphones is these days.

 Any help much appreciated.

Re: Olympus LS-100 Recorder

2012-12-20 Thread Aidan Maher
Wel, those issues is not addressed in the recent updates as far as I
no, actually, I stil try to figure out how to do multi track moad
affectively before I get it, because my problem is that although its
possible to move between tracks just fine, it will be an issue to
select the correct files to assign to the tracks wich you plan to
export, or to change into a wave file to make space for new data. As
there is no audible feedback there as far as I no. I wish that olympus
can just wake up and give us full accessibility. Its now five years
since they started the talking menus, its now time for better. They
always do half a job with these things. Maybe they should also
consider tts, then it won't be necessary to record all the promts and
it take space on the internal memory.

On 19/12/2012, Rich De Steno ironr...@verizon.net wrote:

If ound most problematic are quoted below. Are these still problems? I
am considering buying the recorder and would like some feedback.

No way to pause playback. You need to think about this...imagine an
analog reel to reel tape recorder, now imagine that every time you press
stop when the machine is playing or recording, the transport instantly
rewinds to the beginning of the tape...that's what happens with the
LS-100! So, let's say you are trying to come up with a part for the 2nd
chorus of a song...say 1:50 seconds into a song (like I was), when you
are done and want to hear it, you only option is to press STOP (it
instantly stops and resets to zero) then press PLAY, then hold down the
Fast Forward key to advance to 1:45 seconds...and that's just to hear it
once. If you don't like what you hear, you press STOP. RECORD to arm
the track, PLAY, FF to advance to the 2nd chorus, RECORD to begin
recording again, and then STOP and repeat the 1st process to hear it,
every time having to press PLAY and then holding down the FF key for
10 seconds or so to advance to 1:45 on your song. It becomes very
tedious to say the least. You can't pause record either but I'm not sure
why you would want to (at least in MTR mode).

You can't alter, add to, or partially erase tracks in any way once
they've been recorded. You either accept them or erase them entirely.
