Recording from external sources

2009-01-15 Thread Peter Alan Smith
Greetings fellow audio lovers. I am new to the list and I have a question
for those of you who use Jaws and Goldwave. I have been successfully
recording from external devices, mostly cassette players, into Goldwave via
an external device called an "Inport" made by Xitel. Wires run from my tape
deck into the small Inport device, which contains its own sound card,
then into a USB port on my pc. To avoid having the sound cards clash, I
would have to add a new line of text to the Jaws ini file that told Jaws
that the synthesizer port was my pc sound card. I then had to check the
"use default only" box in the sounds control panel. I would restart the pc,
start up Goldwave, start recording on a new file, hit the play button on the
external device, and get an mp3 file for my efforts!

This was cumbersome, especially having to worry about clashing sound cards.
But it worked for 2 years. Well, I recently upgraded from Jaws 7 to Jaws 9.
Now every time I go through this procedure, I get a Jaws application error.
It knocks Jaws out so that I can't get more details as well. The last thing
I hear is "Jaws application error, a message is being sent.,"
then the sound is gone! Once in a while, I manage to save some recorded
sound in Goldwave, but it contains that bonking noise that you hear when you
have done something Windows doesn't like. Something is definitely up. I
have tried work arounds such as turning off Jaws once I hit the play button
on the external device, but to no avail. Things seem to go fine right up
until I send sound in from the external device. I have tried every
permutation I can think of; making sure the sound cards are either the one
in the pc, or the Inport one in Goldwave and the control panel. I am
getting to the point of giving up. I wonder if there is a better way of
doing this.
Surely there must be other folks using Jaws, Goldwave, and recording sounds
from external devices. What do you all use? I have tried googling key
words to see what others might use, but no luck so far. Rick Harmon, the
Blind Geek Zone master, recommended that I contact the PC Audio group. You
all sound very knowledgeable and I really hope that you can point me in the
right direction. Perhaps there are ways that avoid using more than one
sound card? Let me know what you think.

Most Sincerely,

Peter A. Smith

RE: Recording from external sources

2009-01-15 Thread Peter Alan Smith
Thanks, I'll give it a test. Perhaps things have changed, but when I first
set this up, as soon as I plugged the Inport into the USB slot, Jaws quit.
That was when I got advice from FS to put in the additional line into the
ini file. I also have a port replicator which I disconnect as the Inport
folks say you should plug right into the pc and not into any external ports
because they might cause snaps, crackles and pops.

I'll give it a go.

Cheers,

Peter

I do this using an iMic. I don't worry about changing the JAWS default
soundcard; I simply plug in the USB device and then JAWS comes through its
headphone output, which is ok for the purpose. What happens if you just plug
in the device to the USB port?

RE: Recording from external sources

2009-01-16 Thread Peter Alan Smith
Hi Dean, I tried plugging it in without doing anything else and Jaws quits.
I tried not checking the default button in the sounds control panel,
Goldwave and Jaws were working, but by the time the tape finished playing,
Jaws had quit. Everything points to it being the soundcard in the Inport
device. Someone else I know mentioned the imic. Sounds like there's a
sound card if it's got a headset too. I am going to research it. Was it
easy enough to set up? It cooperated with Jaws?

Thanks,
Peter

Hi James, I tried it that way and as soon as I plug in the Inport into the

I guess not too many folks record from external sources as few people

Oh, and if you do just these 3 keywords in google, you get a nice review:
"iMic jaws record"
It's a bit dated, but compelling!

I have used the Xittle device you speak of, but it does disable Jaws no
matter what I do. I have the IMic which does allow you to hear jaws through
the headphone jack on the IMic itself. it works well! I think I paid about
$40.00 for it, which I seem to think it was cheaper than the Xittle device.

RE: Recording from external sources

2009-01-16 Thread Peter Alan Smith
Thanks, it looks like I was just plain lucky with the Xitel Inport. I have
researched the iMic and it sounds perfect! Plug and play with no external
sound card to fight with. I am still initially wary with any Mac product
but it looks like it is pc compatible. Now here is the new prob; finding
the iMic! I googled it and have discovered that it sells so well that it is
continually out of stock. I called Griffin Technology and they concurred.
I went to J&R and put myself on the waiting list as well as at Amazon. I
want it now! Wah!

Cheers,

Peter

RE: New Winamp And Last Url Visited In Winamp

2009-01-18 Thread Peter Alan Smith
Pam, I would be most curious as to what you discover. I have thought about
upgrading my winamp, but haven't heard much about accessibility or scripts.
So I have laid off of any newer versions. It's a drag to upgrade and then
find out things are worse. Let's hope that those who know more about this
reply.

Cheers,

Peter in Charleston

Ok, this is going to be a two-parter.

Where's the best place to download the latest Winamp? I went to Winamp.com,
but could not tell whether the program was loading with either Window-Eyes
or JAWS. I haven't upgraded in a while on my desktop computer.

Second, there used to be a way to display the url for the last stream played
in Winamp but I can't make it appear. I want to add a url to my list of
shows to be recorded with Replay/AV, but can't locate the url.

Thanks in advance for all help.

You can find it on other sites, but I still get it from winamp.com. If you
follow the "Download Winamp" link near the top of the page, you'll go to the
site http://www.winamp.com/player. There's a little dialog to fill out
beneath the heading "Choose your Winamp". The dialog prompts you for things
like language, which version of Winamp you want (I always select full.) and
whether you want to be notified of Winamp announcements.

Thanks Chris, that's good to know! The last time I upgraded my winamp,
there was a slight learning curve and some scripts to download. The library
can be a pain if you wander away from the rip and burn section. But I still
like winamp more than windows media player.

Hi Peter. If you're running JAWS version 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, or 4.51, and
I'm guessing you are? Support for Winamp is already built in. Just start
using winamp and enjoy it. to get specific help, press insert plus h for
the window you're in, or insert plus w for a set of keystrokes for any
winamp window you might be in.

Subject: audio editors

Hello gang:
I know that this subject has been covered before, however now that I will be
using audio editors for a project that I am working on, I am enquiring as to
which editor is recommended by people on the list. Some of the editors that
I am aware of are: Gold wave. Audacity, and Wave pad. For the most part I
will be working with short MP3 files. I have intentions of purchasing Gold
Wave if indeed that is the program that is recommended, however I would like
to try it first in order to make sure that this is the program that will
meet my needs. .
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello everyone:
When I am working with jaws it has a tendency to quit speaking even after I
have closed all windows. It will read one or two lines of an email message
then quit. Once I reboot it seems to work fine. I am beginning to think that
perhaps I need more ram. Any solution to this dilemma?

That's plenty of RAM. Simple answer is to call Freedom Scientific at 800
444 4443 get the tech help folks, give them your serial # and they are
fairly good at deciphering what's wrong. You might be putting too much
stuff in your startup menu and systems tray as well. But this would make
Jaws slow down on everything else, not just Outlook.

Yes, that's an easy one. Go into general preferences, or control p, and
arrow down to titles, tab along until you hear an edit field describing how
you want titles to read. It has lots of parenthesis, brackets, $ signs,
etc. I just removed the words artist, title and file name and put them in
the order you want. I do prefer having title then artist and file name. I
hate it when the artist is listed as various artists!

Hope that was clearer than mud!

OK. Seems to work, mostly. I think the details are being cut off if the
total text is long. But it doesn't seem to take up much of the width of the
screen. I have reduced the font to 9 to try to make this better.

I'd rather use Winamp than Windows Media as someone suggested, because I
want to try doing internet broadcasting.

.3gp is the standard use by the NLS to record talking books and magazines.
It is also used by the Victor Stream Reader to record your own personal
notes. If you have the Victor Stream it comes with a CD containing
companion software that will convert .3pg files into .wav and from there you
can play them or convert them to .mp3 or .ogg etc.

My non zooming work-around in GW is to use the set marker dialogue, shift

sound within or without the boundaries. Of course you have to know the

Not as good as Sound Forge in this respect, but you can set the Zoom level
to a particular interval, then use the arrows to advance by that level.

Subject: Moving by time in Goldwave?

Sorry if the answer to this is to read the manual, but, well, cannot find
any reference in there to moving by a specific amount of time in Goldwave.
Does anyone know if this is in fact possible?

Those familiar with Sound Forge will know the control-G command for doing
this, and I'm after a similar function in GW.

Many thanks.

Ray.

iMic

2009-02-03 Thread Peter Alan Smith
Hey, I hope this isn't regarded as a product advertisement, because it is
truly related to blind access to audio technology. I've been trying to find
the iMic for several weeks now. Griffin Technology cannot keep up with the
demand for this plug and play external sound device for recording on your
pc. They are continually sold out. Well I talked to some person there a
few days ago and they have just released another batch. I got an email from
the place where I reserved mine at about 3:00 am this morning. So I leapt
out of bed and ordered it. Psyched! Just wanted to alert folks on this
list that the iMic is available. Not an ad nor a product endorsement!

Cheers,

But is it the IMic original or the IMic2? Griffin had the IMic2 available on

between these products, please let me know. I bought my IMic off of EBay.
It's the little rouned device that plugs into the USB port.

I called up Griffin and they claim that the iMic 2 won't interfere with
sound output such as Jaws while recording from an external sound source.
You can call Griffin at:

So I am hopeful.

Subject: Question about listening to audio on a website

Hello there,

I have a question, and I'm going to try and explain my problem as best as I
can.

I'm using a Del laptop with Windows Vista and Jaws 9. I also have an old
Toshiba laptop with Windows XP and JAWS 9. That one is not working very
well, and I try to use it as little as possible.

My de3l computer is doing something very strange. It has Windows Media
Player and Real Player, but WM player is the default. I'm able to go to
different websites and listen to things using it.

There are several radio stations I enjoy that I can listen to using Windows
Media Player with no problem.

However, when I get to one specific station

www.kboo.fm

something different happens.

When I try to click on the mp3 high link, my computer tells me that Internet
Explorer cannot load the web page. Well, that's very strange because every
other computer I have (including my office computer) has no problems with
it. Even my very sluggish computer can load that particular web page and
open it with Windows Media Player.

This station is becoming more important to me and I'll be needing to listen
to it more and more, but it would be preferable to use my primary computer
for this.

Now, you might ask yourselves whether or not IE is loading other web pages.
Yes it is. No problems there.

Also, you may ask if I can pick up other websites with similar stations and
listen to them. Indeed I can.

There's also a "Listen Live" section and there is an option for high
bandwidth for stereo, and that doesn't seem to work either. It's as if IE
doesn't want to read that for some reason.

Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

Jim

Hi Donna, that is exactly what I want to do as well. My entire cd

tunes from back in the day. Some quite hard to find. Then there's the

That's a good additional feature, but I will just turn on the external

sound levels are okay. I still haven't learned where those controls are in
GW.

Okay, when I used the xitel inport, I would have to go to the Jaws ini file
and add a line of text saying that the port was the name of the default
sound card. Then I would go into control panel sounds and check the box
saying to use the default setting. Do I have to do that with this one?

Peter,

I don't think my IMic continually tried to steal away the default soundcard
assignment, the way that my Logitech headset tries to do, and as most other
USB devices try to do, as well. But, if you have this problem, you should
simply edit jfw.ini, to force JAWS to use the output device you wish it to,
regardless of which device has the default output device assignment. Do you
know how to do this?

And, no, the Soundblaster Live 24bit external doesn't continually try to
steal the default device assignment, just the logitech headset does that.

Thanks! I have tried setting it up without reading anything and this is
foolish, but I am eager to play with this. Do you mind if I email you with
a question or two after I go through the manual thoroughly? Right now I
have to figure out where this lever is that they refer to. It's not
apparent on the little disk. But it can't be that difficult.

Hi Donna, that is exactly what I want to do as well. My entire cd

vinyl! I used a thing called an inport by xitel but it kept knocking jaws

That's a good additional feature, but I will just turn on the external

first ever had to do that when I got my Logitech headset for skype. But, why
not do it anyway? Given how many USB devices there are nowadays that one may
wish to use, and the potential for each of them to want to make itself the

use the output device you wish it to is a relatively simple precaution
against potential trouble.

Hope you can help with the iMic

2009-02-06 Thread Peter Alan Smith
Hi Donna, Gary, Alex, et al:

Y'all have been very kind and patient with me. Thanks ever so much! I
don't have individual email addresses so I can't go off-line. Sorry to
those who are disinterested. Here's the situation now that I have the iMic:

I have a Dell laptop, Windows XP, with a SigmaTel Audio soundcard. I am
usually hooked up to a port replicator which also has its own sound card
called C-Media Headphone Set. I have Jaws 9.0 as the screen reader and
Goldwave as the sound recording program.

To start with, I assume that I should disconnect from the port replicator
and use my laptop with the SigmaTel Audio default card. So before shutting
down, I should go into Control Panel, Sounds, Audio tab, and check the box
at the bottom that says use only default devices. I then do a shut down.

I attach the line outs from my tape deck into the iMic line in adaptor plug
and plug that into the line in plug on the iMic. I flip the switch to line
in on the side of the device. I then unplug the USB port replicator. I
plug in the iMic USB plug and restart the laptop computer.

Will I hear Jaws when it comes on? Do I plug in a set of headphones into
the output jack on the iMic? If I don't get any sound, I will have to
abort. The one thing that I will need to check is that my sound settings in
control panel and Goldwave are on the iMic for the recording device and that
the playback settings are on either the iMic for the headphones plugged into
the iMic or without headphones on the SigmaTel card. But I can't do this
without Jaws.

In the old days when my old device was sometimes working, along with doing
the checkbox in the control panel sounds audio settings, I would bring up
the Jaws 9.0 ini file and insert the following at the last line before the
synth2 line:

Synth1Port=SigmaTel Audio

I don't know if I should do this or not. Some have advised that I do this
and some say it is not needed.

I hope that you can help. It's been a struggle to get back to eliminating
my vast tape and vinyl collection. This is all I am focused on besides my
job. It has become a quest of sorts. I wish I had a sighted person along
side that can help, but it ain't happening without much pleading. Besides
this isn't rocket science, or is it? Smiles!

Let me know what you think! You can contact me via any of the contact
points below.

Cheers,

Peter

Well, I think my experience will be somewhat untypical, but I bought a
roll-up keyboard from Adesso that fell apart after two months. It cost
around $28. I purchased another one from a grocery store in town, of all
places, that cost $14, and has been functioning perfectly for well over a
year. I don't know how to advise you on this, except to tell you not to let
others talk you out of owning one. I absolutely love mine, and once I got
used to typing on it, I went out and bought one for the home computer as
well. You should know that I'm going to be very much in the minority on
this; most people either don't like them or have never used them. You just
can't beat the portability and light weight, and the keys are nicely spread
apart so they're easily used after you get used to the action of the
keyboard. The one I paid $14 for has a series of buttons going across the
top in addition to the function keys that are programmable. Those, too, can
be a nice feature.

Adesso is a pretty good company with a decent reputation, so I'm sure the
experience I had with that $28 keyboard isn't a normal one. Still, that
said, I'm not sure I'd buy that particular brand again.

Regards,

Nolan

Your rudeness is exceeded only by your ignorance of the law. I'm certain
that the list owner, Tom, does not condone the kind of copyright
infringement you endorse. The copyright law contains a "fair use" provision
that authorizes consumers to make copies for their own purposes, which can
include sending to one or two friends. I'm confident the majority of
subscribers to this list work within those parameters.

You're being more than a bit hypocritical to take Norma to task for sending
a copyrighted article when the whole purpose of the list is to violate
copyright. Since ripping music or audio books is a violation of the law; and
the changes a few years ago do not alter this fundamental fact; posting of
that article (especially since the copyright information was also clearly
provided) hardly rates a second thought for me. If you're so sensitive about
copyright, then kindly leave the list and take your high moral values with
you.

Norma,

With genuine respect for your best intentions and all your contributions to
this list, I object to the posting of a copyrighted article. Note also that
it is from a newspaper that, like the subject of the article, is facing
grave financial problems. A link would have been sufficient to take us to
the website.

Separately, as the article hints, you may well see a takeover by EchoStar.
Sirius XM has too much long-term value. I don't think list members should
panic. Not yet, anyway.

Jaws & Goldwave bonks and shutdowns ...

2009-02-14 Thread Peter Alan Smith
Dear PC Audio List & Goldwave Tech Support:
Whenever I run Goldwave on my laptop, I first get this bonking sound (like
when you get to the end of a line of text). It continues repeatedly bonking
for around 2 or 3 minutes. I then get a Jaws Application error message. I
hit enter on the send error message button. It sends the message then
repeats the error message. When I select send error message this time, it
blows Jaws out and I have to restart the computer. This only happens when I
start Goldwave, no other programs are affected at any time.

I have the sounds settings in the control panel set to the built in sound
card, SigmaTel Audio. The device, play, record settings in Goldwave are set
to the same sound card. I am using Windows XP on a Dell Inspiron 5101
laptop. Very vanilla.

The error message stated:
Sz appName jfweve SZ appVer 905192
SZMODName NTCll cll
SZ modver 5/2600 5512 offset 120e
The Following files will be included in the error report:
Docume 1\psmith\locals1\t emp\Wer5320 di 00 exe.mdmp
Jfw.exe.mdmp

The only red flag to me in that mass of letters and numbers is the
jfw.exe.mdmp line. I am cc-ing a very nice fellow with customer service at
Goldwave on this email. The folks at Freedom Scientific had little to say
other than they have heard of Goldwave and that I should try a listserve
called jfw-lite. They said that they had no idea what to do with that error
message. I think the problem is a basic one , but I have yet to figure it
out. Has anyone encountered this situation? I have tried removing Goldwave
and adding a fresh new copy. I also tried using the Jaws default settings
and the bonking and error messages continued. I have also tried variations
on the Jaws 9.0 ini file entry. All with no luck.

Help!

RE: mp3 direct cut

2009-02-19 Thread Peter Alan Smith
There is a little plugin for goldwave that allows one to cut and paste with
mp3's. The only reason I know is that I tried to do it once when I didn't
have the plugin and this message came on telling me that I couldn't, but
offered me the download. So I don't know where I got it, but GW should have
it somewhere. Ask their tech support folks. It beats decompressing and
recompressing.

I know all about Goldwave, and it does have many advantages. Actually, when
working with an mp3 file, Mp3 Direct Cut has it beat for splitting and some
simple editing given the fact that it works directly on the mp3 file without
decompressing and re-compressing. Both programs have their uses.

Goldwave markers editing and playing

2009-05-01 Thread Peter Alan Smith
Greetings! I have been out of the loop since my hard-drive crashed a month
ago. But I am slowly on the mend. One thing in Goldwave is really
perplexing me. I must have hit a set of keys that changed a setting, but I
don't know how to get back to my original settings. When editing a file in
GW, I move the start markers to where I think the sound trimming should be
done. I hit the home key to move the cursor to the start marker. I then
hit play to start my editing. But lately it seems as if the placement of
start and finish markers is just ignored. I will hit play and while I
expect the sound to commence with the new start marker, it resumes where the
cursor was left originally. This has never happened before and I wonder
what I have done to get into this mess. Thanks in advance for any help.
Cheers,
Peter

I love my UMAX scanner. My photographer friends swear by them for the high

RE: Hooking up laptop

2009-05-29 Thread Peter Alan Smith
I have a cord running out of the audio jack on the laptop connected to a
splitter which connects to the line in plugs on my amp. I take this further
by running a stereo chord from the amp's line out to my wireless broadcaster
that my buddy who works at Brookstone's gave me. So I get sound from my
stereo speakers wired to the amp, on my wireless headphones, and my wireless
portable speaker. Other than the fact that my girlfriend dislikes me
walking around the house with headphones on, it's great! I don't know the
conventional name for the splitter, but any Radio Shack or electronics store
will know what you want.
Cheers,
Peter

Barry Scheur of Talking Solutions will announce the launch and demo for the
first time three new low cost audio products that his company is marketing.
The most exciting is the "Stream Sound" a very small battery powered speaker
that significantly increases the volume of the Victor Stream and other
devices while preserving excellent sound quality. Weighing only 1.5 ounces
with a plug that attaches directly into the stream and can be carried with
it easily, this speaker runs for over 50 hours on 2 AAA batteries. It costs
$25.00.
The two other products are low cost and easy to use 4 GB screenless M P
players. Both are tiny - one clips to your shirt, and the other is molded
into a unisex jewelry pendant that can be worn around the neck. The standard
player is priced at $30, and the fashion player will be priced at $40.00.
Limited quantities will be available for purchase at the meeting.
VIBUG will get the first chance see these items before they are marketed
extensively during the summer.

Perhaps there is a site that would explain how to go about it...

Audible

2009-07-22 Thread Peter Alan Smith
Hi there. Do any of our Audible audio books listeners know if one loses the
ability to listen or transfer already purchased books if one temporarily
suspends their account? I did this about a month ago until my finances are
more steady. I just tried to transfer a previously purchased book from a
few months back onto my book courier from my external hard drive and I am
unable to do so. The files show as being there in Windows Explorer and in
Audible Manager, but I get a message that no files are available. This
doesn't seem right since I have paid for these books.

I think USB drives are doled out on a first come first serve basis. I think
you can use Disk Management to change this though. Right click on My
computer on your desktop and select Manage. Arrow down to Disk Management
and then tab and arrow over to the USB drive that you want to assign a
specific drive letter to. Use shift-F10 to bring up the application menu and
select Change Drive and Path. I've done this with a few USB drives, and I
give them drive letters like S, T or X so as not to conflict with E, F, ...,
which might get used up by other USB attached drives.

Thanks to you both! I was traveling with my external hard drives while on a
vacation cruise. So I must have used a different file path when I
transferred a new book to my Book Courier. When I got home I set my drives
up again and the E and F drives seemed to have switched.
I re-set the file path in the Book Courier and this has done the trick for
that one. But the player built in to the Audible Manager can't find any
files. I went into the options choice under the edit menu and set it
correctly, but it still doesn't like it. G. I will call Audible
tomorrow morning. I didn't realize that the usb letters, e,f,g,etc. were
associated with a specific external drive, I thought they were more aligned
with the particular slot that one plugged their device into. I recall that
Audible file paths were a problem a few years back for me. Thanks again!

RE: can I record from my turntable using GoldWave?

2009-08-22 Thread Peter Alan Smith
Make sure all of your devices are set to the right device settings in GW.
You can do this by hitting F11 and going through all the tabs. If it isn't
responding, go into your control panel and look at your sounds settings.
Then it's pretty much play and record via control F9. I would set a short
test file to record into at first. Have you recorded anything before on GW?
If not, I strongly suggest you go to Rick Harmon's web site and listen to
the tutorials he has there. They are very, very useful. There are some very
necessary things you should do before recording. Some are trial and error,
but it's best to listen to the tutorials and follow along:

I thought you said you had a usb connection from the turntable to your pc.
Shouldn't that suffice in lieu of amps?

Subject: Winamp questions

I have both Jaws and Wineyes so instructions using either screen reader
including scripts are appreciated.

I wish to play all files in a particular folder using Winamp. However, I
wish to play these files in the proper numeric sequence, ie. 01, 02, 03 etc.
Just how do I do this? If I just put all in the cue, the files do not play
in the proper order.

Next, what is the procedure to get the aggregate playing time for all mp3
files in a given folder?
These are all constant bit rate, so I would assume that what procedure I
should follow will yield accurate results.

Thanks.

Roger, that was me. But I do not know or recall how I got it other
than when I first was playing around withGW, I tried to cut and paste
an mp3. A message appeared telling me that I couldn't do it unless I
downloaded this plugin. So I said okay. It does work. The GW help

it out.

restricting audio rights to synthesized voices ...

2009-02-26 Thread Peter Alan Smith: psmit...@post.harvard.edu
Walt Mossberg of the WSJ today sang the praises of the new Amazon
Kindle. But he cited the warning that the Authors Guild has publicly
released:
Kindle 2 can read books aloud. And Kindle 2 is not paying anyone for
audio rights. True, you can already get software that will read aloud
whatever is on your computer. But Kindle 2 is being sold specifically
as a new, improved, multimedia version of books–every title is an
e-book and an audio book rolled into one. And whereas e-books have yet
to win mainstream enthusiasm, audio books are a billion-dollar market,
and growing. Audio rights are not generally packaged with e-book
rights. They are more valuable than e-book rights. Income from audio
books helps not inconsiderably to keep authors, and publishers,
afloat….You may be thinking that no automated read-aloud function can
compete with the dulcet resonance of Jim Dale reading ‘Harry Potter’
or of authors, ahem, reading themselves. But the voices of Kindle 2
are quite listenable….And that sort of technology is improving all the
time….no part of my voice is competing with my own audio books yet.
But people who want to keep on doing creative things for a living must
be duly vigilant about any new means of transmitting their work.

I wonder if we will have to go through the same legal disclaimers as
we do to get into Bookshare?

Can one just plug the netbook into a usb port replicator and then
just use regular keyboard; saving the mini-functions for when
traveling? I use a laptop right now and it's just as if I am using a
desktop pc. Whenever I travel, I just unplug and go. If one can do
the same with a netbook and it's lighter and smaller, then all the
better.

Re: restricting audio rights to synthesized voices ...

2009-03-01 Thread Peter Alan Smith: psmit...@post.harvard.edu
Here is a small piece available everywhere regarding Amazon's response
to the whole audio reading capability of their e-book. Things happen
fast these days don't they!?! I think we in the blindness & audio
community should take advantage of this and make persons in charge of
such policy aware of our "situation." How often does our audio needs
come up in the public domain?
Cheers,
Peter

Rather than argue with the Authors Guild over the text-to-speech
feature of its new Kindle 2 e-book reader, Amazon is modifying the
device’s software to make it optional. Authors and publishers will now
be able to decide if they want the function enabled or not on titles
for which they own the rights. Amazon (AMZN) announced the move in a
statement released late Friday afternoon, in which it also said it
believes the Kindle’s text-to-speech function to be legal:

Kindle 2’s experimental text-to-speech feature is legal: no copy is
made, no derivative work is created, and no performance is being
given. Furthermore, we ourselves are a major participant in the
professionally narrated audiobooks business through our subsidiaries
Audible and Brilliance. We believe text-to-speech will introduce new
customers to the convenience of listening to books and thereby grow
the professionally narrated audiobooks business. Nevertheless, we
strongly believe many rightsholders will be more comfortable with the
text-to-speech feature if they are in the driver’s seat. Therefore,
we are modifying our systems so that rightsholders can decide on a
title by title basis whether they want text-to-speech enabled or
disabled for any particular title. We have already begun to work on
the technical changes required to give authors and publishers that
choice. With this new level of control, publishers and authors will be
able to decide for themselves whether it is in their commercial
interests to leave text-to-speech enabled. We believe many will decide
that it is. The move comes on the heels of a meandering New York
Times editorial in which Roy Blount Jr., president of the Authors
Guild, argued that the Kindle’s roboticized nondramatic book readings
are a threat to the audio book market

Re: Seeking program to create ring tones

2009-03-05 Thread Peter Alan Smith: psmit...@post.harvard.edu
Goldwave is great. Keep those files as small as possible. I guess it
comes down to how much memory your phone has. I took a number of my
favorite tunes that reminded me of certain persons, chopped it down to
15 seconds, then saved them as mp3's. My favorite was some cartoon
sound effects that I ran as a repeating loop. Of course one must make
sure that all copyright rules are followed. But it is fun to assign a
certain sound to each caller that you know, especially being visually
impaired.

Re: Cassette to digital

2009-03-12 Thread Peter Alan Smith: psmit...@post.harvard.edu
There are several devices that will connect your tape player to a usb
port. The iMic by Griffin Tech. is great and doesn't mess with your
computer's speech. This little device hooks up to your tape deck, but
can also be used with turntables, etc. One drag is that they are
almost always sold out. You have to go on a waiting list. Mine took
2 weeks. Hope this helps.

 Thanks. It sounds very complicated.

Re: MP3HD coming

2009-03-20 Thread Peter Alan Smith: psmit...@post.harvard.edu
Very interesting! Perhaps I didn't notice it, but how would one play
these improved mp3 files? Would one have to buy a better player?
Would Winamp notice the difference in my pc and adjust accordingly?
Or does the sound improve automatically because of this encoding?

Cheers,
Peter

Re: converting Audible files to other formats

2009-03-25 Thread Peter Alan Smith: psmit...@post.harvard.edu
You can burn then rip. I agree that there are legal issues. But it's
also so time consuming to burn to cd and then rip to files that I
couldn't be bothered. A 280 page book took up around 10 cd's. It
takes a while to burn each one and then just as long to rip them. The
files are already transferable to any portable device you might want
so I just don't see the point. File management is time consuming
enough as it is!
Cheers,
Peter

Re: MLLB WEBSITE CHANGE HELP?

2009-04-07 Thread Peter Alan Smith: psmit...@post.harvard.edu
The thing worked okay although I don't really fiddle with it much.
What I did run into to my great disgust was not being able to get to
my radio station of choice. I called their customer service line and
vented a bit. It seems they were unprepared for the volume of folks
clicking on the Mets v. Reds game on WFAN. The media player would pop
up and there would be no place for email address and password. I
selected the Spanish network and it did come through and then played
the game en Espanol. Then the Reds radio network also came in fine.
So I tried WFAN again and nothing! I asked the poor chap on the
telephone "How can you not be prepared for Opening Day?!" I told him
it was not his fault, but that the upper managers needed a whack on
the head for this outrage. I am considering a letter to the Clown
Prince of Baseball, Bud Selig. Then again what will he do?

Dean, Gary and Walter, thanks for the helpful replies! The scroll

will do them again. It is also true that maximizing screens helps.

Re: Audible

2009-07-22 Thread Peter Alan Smith: psmit...@post.harvard.edu
Thanks to you both! I was traveling with my external hard drives
while on a vacation cruise. So I must have used a different file path
when I transferred a new book to my Book Courier. When I got home I
set my drives up again and the E and F drives seemed to have switched.
I re-set the file path in the Book Courier and this has done the
trick for that one. But the player built in to the Audible Manager
can't find any files. I went into the options choice under the edit
menu and set it correctly, but it still doesn't like it. G. I
will call Audible tomorrow morning. I didn't realize that the usb
letters, e,f,g,etc. were associated with a specific external drive, I
thought they were more aligned with the particular slot that one
plugged their device into. I recall that Audible file paths were a
problem a few years back for me. Thanks again!
