Cruising at 79-85mph we got 200 miles between 20 gallon fills - there were
some high speed bits, I wasn't driving

I believe one state has no posted maximum limit? And the deserted
interstates at night are similar to the european motorways (trans europe I
regularly hit cruise at 130-150 mph). Cars in the US I agree are built for
lower speeds, especially with those hard cross-ply tyres... The other thing
to remember is that long distance travel in the US is easy by air, for the
UK / EU we don't have brilliant or low cost air links.

Yep! And of course free healthcare, a good welfare system etc. I'm not

I would say, purely as a seat of the pants judgment, that photographers I've
known or heard of have had far more difficulty with private citizens and
lawbreakers than with the police. Difficulties with police sometimes center
on where you can put your car when you're stopping to take a picture. On
most American freeways, for instance, you're not ALLOWED to stop and smell

A 1270 isn't really a previous generation. It's true that it's been
superceded by the 1280, but the image quality difference is so minimal that
testers are having a hard time detecting it, and lots of 1270 owners are not
considering upgrading.

Also, if anyone wants to be amazed by what the current generation of digital

RE: Illegal Street Photography?

2001-12-04 Thread Kent Gittings

I wonder if any of you ever saw my brother's photo shoot from Los Alamos
Scientific Laboratory that was used for a story in Esquire many years ago.
They couldn't get any of their staff photographers to sign on to do it (it
was during the Dr. Lee atomic secrets to China investigation). They didn't
want photos of secure areas or anything but they needed photos to go with a
story about the case. So they called a couple of people they knew in New
Mexico who recommended my brother as someone who might do it. He held out
for double his normal hourly rate (which he said was probably less than they
paid their own staff guys). At the time the facility was still an open base
except for the security forces that drove around in the black SUVs.
He got them to sign also for any bail/legal fees if he got caught.
He borrowed a friend's full size Blazer, his partner's Nikon F4 (he shoots
large format) and rented a Nikon 800/5.6 lens. Wandered all over the
facility shooting pics while keeping the lens inside the vehicle. Got passed
by the security forces several times. Send the photos in, got paid, and the
article came out. Then about a week later he got a visit from the FBI. They
didn't want to arrest him unless he had shot photos of either secure areas
or people with security clearances. So he showed them the photos which he
had done. He specifically avoided doing that anyway having grown up in a
military family. Only other thing they asked before they left was how he did
it. After that security procedures changed down there.

There are so many fine 100mm macro lenses out there. The Vivitar won't

Clear MX screen

2001-12-04 Thread LeviL

Hello

I guess I am not sure what crosshair means. There might be some
terminology problems also. I need matte screen but with no markings on
the screen.

Look at http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/focusing/screens/index.html

This supposedly lists all the Penatx made LX and MX screens. The one I
was looking at was the SE-60 "Plain Matte Field". This is a modern,
brighter LX screen, that someone just advised against using in MXs. Of
course it is possible that someone else made plain or clear screens for
the MX, this site only lists the Pentax made screens.

Can you give me the model number on the clear screen you have?
Can someone please clarify what crosshair means?
I would still appreciate any insight anyone has on screens in MX. What do
you use, how does it work, how it effects lightmeter? etc. thx.

RE: OT ot OT Re: SUV's - was: Illegal Street Photography?

2001-12-04 Thread Kent Gittings

Actually the reason is business. Without a guaranteed quick return only the
solar energy companies like Solarex can make a profit off the stuff. And
don't think that pouring more R & D dollars will get the efficiency much
over the low percentage conversions now available. NASA pays for extensive
research and engineering projects in that area as space is still the number
one priority for it.
Not to mention the Sierra Club would most likely sue to keep all the solar
panels from covering all the acreage you would need to make it work. Fusion
would be a better solution so instead of trying to harness a small
percentage of the sun's fusion it would be better just to do it here. Would
save the large areas we'd have to chop down to cover with solar panels.
My vote is to get all the commuters off the road into some kind of mass
transit so those of us who enjoy high performance driving can have the roads
all to ourselves.

Funny Juan.

Solar energy has always been a fascination of mine since about 7th grade.
In 10th I did a Science Fair project using the phase change principle. A
triangular shaped box made of insulated door material. The front had a
double-paned glass door. Inside was black and suspended in it were about 10
aluminum tunes, also black. Inside each tube was Glauber's Salt, a solid,
about 50% full. Glauber's Salt melts (liquefies) at about (if memory is
correct) 96 degrees F. Upon cooling it recrystallizes (solidifies) and
releases the stored heat. I had a fan on the upper back side that blew air
out a vent in the bottom.

I could get 80 - 90 air out of thing for 4-5 hours after recyrsatllization
started.

I ended up getting 3rd place in the district science fair. I think I
answered a judge's question wrong. He asked me if I considered it a science
project or an engineering project. I said science. I determined the next
day I was wrong.

About 10 years later, several mfr.'s. in the US came out with almost
identical items, that were window boxes designed to be greenhouses.

The Sun's energy is free, clean, and virtually unlimited. There's only one
reason the necessary R&D hasn't been put into to making it available at a
reasonable cost to most consumers, for almost any purpose. There's to many
financial incentives at the time, not to do it.

Hi Tom,

No. And personally I'm not sure the Pentax is actually better. However the
photos from both appear essentially indistinguishable. And even compared to
the Minolta 80-200/2.8 HS G which is the one that most people who are not

Some differences in build quality between the Sigmas and the cameras makers
but the Sigma APO and APO EX pro lenses are extremely well built. Especially

For quality I dont see any difference in Sigma and PENTAX lenses, I am
perhaps
mistaken, but I do see a difference in price.
I just priced a 70-200mm 2.8 constant AF lense and Sigma came in just under
$2000.00 AUD while the PENTAX equivalent came in just of $5000.00 AUD

Even if the PENTAX lens is better, is it $3000.00 better?

Variable aperture zoom question

2001-12-04 Thread Michael Nosal

Could you help settle a debate?

Suppose I have a variable aperture zoom lens, say 28-80mm f3.5-f5.6
If I set the zoom at 28mm, and set the aperture wide open, it should be
f3.5. If I then zoom to 80mm, the effective aperture goes down to f5.6,
right? And if I zoom to 50mm, the aperture will be somewhere in between, say
f4 maybe.

Now suppose I set my zoom to 50mm @ f8.
If I zoom out to 28mm, will the effective aperture stay at f8?
If I zoom in to 80mm, will the effective aperture stay at f8?

In other words, how can I tell if I'll really get f8 when I set it to f8?

Thanks,
Mike Nosal

The Renault doesn't meet North American clean air standards. Or Renault
hasn't bothered to get it tested to see if it would pass is the more likely
problem. Importing any car that was never sold here is a problem. Of course

And what choice did we have when wanting to buy a replacement here? Dobbin'

Ideal for snowy, icy conditions, I don't think. Or maybe it doesn't snow in

I'm not

RE: Clear MX screen

2001-12-04 Thread Kent Gittings

That usually means you need one of the screens designed for
astro/microphotography. Screens usually come in both clear ground glass and
clear non-ground glass. The might have either a simple circle in the middle
or some kind of scale. I've owned at least one of the LX ones which was an
SC-21 or SC-11 I think. Microprism screens don't work for focus under those
conditions so you use a screen without one that transmits as much light
through as possible to aid in getting a real focus.

What do
you use, how does it work, how it effects lightmeter? etc. thx.

Right.

> If I zoom out to 28mm, will the effective aperture stay at f8?
> If I zoom in to 80mm, will the effective aperture stay at f8?

Nope, in both cases (although my understanding is that the relative differences in
aperture at different focal lengths diminish as one moves away from "wide open").

> In other words, how can I tell if I'll really get f8 when I set
> it to f8?

You can't, exactly (although at f/8 you'd probably be close enough if you were using
print film). That's one reason why many of us Pentax dinosaurs prefer sticking to the
ol' constant aperture zooms.

The fact that, in general (with some exceptions, of course), most (typically older,
often MF) constant aperture zooms are better built than most (typically newer, often
AF) variable aperture zooms, is another reason for the dinosaurs amongst us. But I
digress...

In any event, if you're using TTL metering (which most of us use most of the time),
then the exposure recommendation should automatically compensate for the variable
aperture problem.

RE: SUVs

2001-12-04 Thread Collin Brendemuehl

Discussion about SUVs tends to be oriented
around lack of efficiency and energy consumption.
That is,
they're a luxury which should be controlled.
So how much does the luxury of photography add to
environmental pollution?
Or, even less-noticed, the semiconductor industry?

Those who target SUVs will, when their task is complete, just pick another target.
Because the movers and shakers (not all of the followers) in this world view are from
a Marxist persuasion. They hate things like private property and class success.

As evidence I present the group that attacked the SUV dealership in the NW U.S. last
year. Their own statement was not only with regard to vehicles, but to people in
prison who have (wish I had the original words on hand on short notice) transcended
our understanding of ownership and property.

The world view behind the opponents of SUVs is more worrisome than SUVs themselves.

RE: Variable aperture zoom question

2001-12-04 Thread Mick Maguire

My F zoom lenses appear to have a second mark (a green dot) on the aperture
(not there on the primes) which would appear to align with the lower of the
two f settings. My guess would be this is the real f stop for the opposite
and of the range...

e.g. an F 70-210 1:4-1:5.6

Main orange f stop mark is at f4 when the green dot is next to f 5.6. The
orange mark is showing the f stop for 70mm and the green dot is showing it
for 200mm. So it would follow that when the lens is zoomed in between those
two focal lengths that the aperture would be somewhere in-between the two.
Unless I am missing something this *must* be the case...

I would say in order to get f8 you need use the lens like a prime (at one
or other end of it's zoom range), and set the f8 against the corresponding
mark for whichever end of the range you are using.

Perhaps somebody else has a more definitive answer, as this is certainly
only my best guess.

Watch out! We're coming after your MZ-S next! We'll replace it with a
K1000 that you'll have to check out from the community equipment case
every time you need it. It will come with your choice of M50/2 or
35-80/5.6 non-SMC. Choice of film is Konica B&W or Kodak MAX, 6 frame
rolls.

:-)

Being aware of your place in society and how it affects others has
nothing to do with being leftist or hating private property.

BTW, as evidence of how SUVs are evil, I present the many pictures of
Taliban riding on Toyotas 4x4 we all have seen in the last few months.

Re: MX with LX screens, elaboration requested.

2001-12-04 Thread graywolf1943

With a clear glass screen the image is very bright, but there is nothing to focus on.
So, usually, a small crosshair is put in the center of the sceen so you can compare
the arial plane of the image to the crosshair for focusing. Clear screens are really
intended for thing like astrophotography, photography through a microscope, etc.
You really need to have the image very steady to focus in comparison to the
crosshair. They really do not work worth a darn for hand held photography.

Hi all,

I've just noticed that my posts to PDML today have a message appended
telling me that some small (a few dozen bytes) UU-encoded file was stripped
by the listserver de-MIME software. Also found out that a colleague of mine

bottom of each of two e-mails I sent to him last night and today. The
displayed filename of the attachment seems to be the first eight characters

Winmail.dat is some strange Outlook silliness that's apparently
like some sort of e-business-card that only Outlook can read.
Not using Outlook (but corresponding with some other Outlook
users), I've never figured out what combination of Preferences
settings and circumstances causes it to be appended sometimes
and not others. Nobody I've spoken to about it has been able
to turn it off intentionally.

So this doesn't sound like a worm.

That's because the digital is usually only any good at the equivelent of

Respectfully, I would suggest that that's because you're a superior

"patriotic" images was to be expected, and quite appropriate under the
circumstances.

But, why do you think he was "anti-American"?

This is the first attack by a non-American on mainland US soil since the war of
1812. You hope Italy never has to deal with it? Remember WWII? I seem to
recall from history class that it was fought there, so I think that Italians
know what it's like to have their towns and villages destroyed. My guess is
that most Italians on this list have parents and/or grandparents that were alive
during the War. And Italy isn't "neutral". It's a member of NATO, the last
time I looked.

The Scandinavian countries (Norway and Denmark at least - I'm not sure about
Sweden, but I'm sure someone can enlighten us) were invaded by Germany in WWII,
and both had a very active resistance, blowing up military installations and the
like.

In point of fact, Canada and the US have, compared to the rest of the world, NOT
had to deal with war on our soil in the last century and a half. Virtually
every other country has.

frank

No.
Let's make a step back. I wrote I wouldn't mount a SG-60 or one
of the new LX screen due to a bad vignetting in the finder. This
is true, but it's effective with a normal or short lens and, I
admit I had no time to explain better, if you wear glasses (so
do I...). The problem is due to the kind of eyepiece and
magnification of the MX too: the LX has a longer eyepoint, so I
can see the entire frame. I can't do that with the MX. I have to
move slightly the eye to have a complete view. With one of the
new screens (as I said, I tried first with the SG-60) and the
50/1.7 I could barely see the center of the frame...

I can confirm for sure about the vignetting, but I had no
intention to state something as a rule.

accuracy.

Well...
Few hours ago I started to try every possible screen/lens
coupling.
I mounted in the MX the following screens: SE-25, SC-26, SE-60.
Since you want to do astrophotography I used the 300/4, alone
and with a 2x converter (I could have used a true 600/8 and
attach to it different converters - maybe I'll do in the
following days), and tried some shorter lens anyway, just to
have a reference.

The SE-25 is not a great screen, I don't like it even with the
LX... The vignetting is visible, but significantly less than
with a normal lens mounted (to be precise: the SE-25 vignettes
with lenses shorter than 80mm even with the LX).
If you do not wear glasses, maybe the vignetting won't bother
you too much.

The SC-26 is one of my favorite screens. It allows you to focus
a 300/4 almost like a 50/1.4 used with the standard SC-21. Used
on the MX the vignetting is not that bad (I think it is mostly
due to the glasses in this case). At 600/8 you can still use the
focusing aids, although the microprisms start to be hard to
focus.

When I mounted the SE-60 I must admit I couldn't believe to my
eyes. This is the less vignetting-prone screen of these three
(I'm still talking of tele lenses, of course - I had no time to
try a macro set-up).
Used at 600/8 you can easily focus objects at infinity and
closer, but, most important, I couldn't see any kind of
vignetting in the finder (things are different if you use this
screen with, say, a 20/4: you will hardly see the subject even
at the center of the frame; with the LX this shouldn't happen -
I didn't try, though).

I think these are good news for you.
If you are able to buy a SE-60 screen you should go for it in a
hurry. Unfortunately, I cannot comment on the screens
specifically designed for astrophotography like the SD-11.
What f stop is the lens you use for your astrophotography? This
should be the parameter to consider.

Hope this is clear enough...

The Oly E-10 (4MP fixed lens digital SLR) has 60ms shutter lag (assuming focus

Just some mentions of photos that caught my eye and have not been noted
yet...

Jaume Lahuerta - The Tower and the (Ghost) Church - Wonderful nighttime
cloud
effects over the city and the tower keeps attracting my attention.

Sergey SHP - St. Petersburg, City Centre - So was it nighttime in Poland and
broad daylight in St. Petersburg, or is that moonlight?

Bill Piefer - Clockworks - simple subject, well executed

Stan Halpin - "Yellow Flower - Yellow Bug" - I like the flower and the bug
makes it all that much better. Do you think the Portra 160 NC is muting the
colors?

Rodger Whitlock - A Synchro-Tomato - The fuzzy stuff threw me off at first,
then drew me into the photo. You can almost feel the warmth of the
sunshine.

Christian Skofteland - Dusk Watch - I like the silouettes and the color, but
you've got to lose the CrappyScan scanner.

William Robb - Berries - Very vibrant colors and great contrast between the
blue berries and the red stems. What kind of Ivy is that?

Cotty - Stefan Asleep, 2001 - Sell this photo to a stock agency! It is a
wonderfully lit and exposed example of a sleeping child. He will forgive
you
for taking the photo when he as kids of his own.

Chris Niemertelny - Synchronous Willow - Why do I keep on coming back to
look
at this photo again and again. It is deceptively simple yet attractive.

Gianfranco, Darryn, Jon, Annsan - as others commented, your images are
excellent.

And this is my smart-ass response, which just took your

How does the luxury of photography add to the semiconductor industry?

I probably didn't read that correctly.
But - turning it round -
It's the semiconductor industry that allows me the luxury of photography.

Not because of the whizz bang ICs that are made to go in our super-duper
state of the art cameras. It's because that's where my wages come from.

OT: "Neutral" countries (was: Re: December PUG)

2001-12-04 Thread Gianfranco Irlanda

Hi Dan,

I'd prefer avoiding to say that, but you should study the recent
Italian history better...

As Frank kindly pointed out, most Italians remember well the
WWII time.
My mother was born in 1927 and has suffered from bombing in
Naples from any belligerent, including Americans and Germans. In
spite of that, she still has good memories of both...

In most recent times, from the seventies till the nineties, we
had hundreds of people killed by terrorists in many ways (I
won't argue what kind of terrorists they were and what they
sought - too complicated). That's due probably (more than just
'probably') to the fact that Italy is not a neutral country at
all.

Frits,
If you'll be here this Sunday (the 9th), there's the Second Sunday Camera
show and swap at the Fireman's Hall in Wayne, NJ (probably not more than a
15 minute drive from Whippany). There's a smallish shop on Route 10 in
Parsippany (next to Whippany) by the name of Photo Zone, generally has some
decent used equipment but you'll only spend about 10 minutes or so there.

Drop me a line off list and I'll give you the directions to Fireman's Hall
if you so happen to be in NJ on Sunday.

Best regards,
Chris

Next week I will be in Whippany, NJ, for a few days. Are there any
reasonable shops around? My itinerary doesn't allow me to go to Manhattan
this time.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the kind comments.
On the 11th of September my girlfriend and I took Fulvia, the
girl in the picture, to a job interview in a little town near
Naples. We received the news on my cellular phone by SMS, then
my brother called to inform us. When Fulvia ended the interview
we hurried to my girlfriend's house which... is near the
airport.
The scenary was really scaring. On one side the images on the TV
screen, on the other a bunch of military aircrafts flying around
over our heads (Naples is a NATO base). Fulvia was the most
worried of the three.
No wonder if at the equinox time she was still badly worried
about it.

I agree that NASA does research, but what portion of their
government-controlled budget is devoted to solar? Now a days it seems like
most spacecraft are made with off-the-shelf parts to keep costs down instead
of there being a lot of R&D.

The "quick return" is the "attitude" I was alluding to. It's a short versus
long term view. Let's make money quick, even if it wrecks the planet.
Lawmakers will decide not to invest in alternative energy as long as they
are stockholders and board members of oil companies and auto manufacturers.
As far as efficiency, I suspect it could be vastly improved by technologies
and methods not yet envisioned and definitely not budgeted for.

Sierra, well they're Sierra. A respectable organization, no doubt, but
maybe fanatical in some cases.

Valid points, but you *can* do this with good labs. Why does everyone
always argue that the price of printers, paper and ink need to be factored
into comparing digital and film cameras? Do you include the price of a
good minilab into the purchase of your film camera? If you don't want to
print them yourself, take the files to a good lab and let them do it...
just like film. Don's Photo, for example, charges the same for prints
from digital files as from film. This isn't a rant against you, Tom, but
against those people who criticize digital cameras because of problems
with home printing. I'm bitter tonight because I have to mark 50 essays

Regarding the closure of Union Square, I phoned a friend today. He tells me
the stores and hotels around Union Square are open. It's the square itself
(a square block between Powell, Post, Stockton, and O'Farrell) and the

Of course, my friend is not a great shopper-:)

It's the stores that would be decorated anyway.

Chris,

I wasn't arguing so much about price. It's more about time.

About a year ago it seemed pretty clear (from what I read) that digital was
FAR from the quality of film, by about a factor of 10. I'm talking again
about RAW information.

It doesn't seem that we've come far past that. Maybe a time and 1/2 in the
last year? For something that the ordinary person can afford?

I even think a 640X480 Mavica does a nice job for what I use it for.

I think digital is fine for every day use. I'm not convinced it's fine for
more than that... yet.

 Respectfully,

That's why I said that the rant wasn't directed against you. :) And
yeah, it can take a while to print images yourself... but a good lab can
give as fast a turn-around time as film, and often even faster.

Well, I've been working at Don's for just over three years now, and
digital's come a long way in that time, IMO. I remember when 1.3MP
cameras were the rage, while nowadays the standard is 3MP and up. But
yeah, they are expensive, aren't they? This is just a matter of time,
though, and after some more years pass I fully expect to see kick-ass
quality digital come down to affordable levels.

For me, it's a bit like a cell phone. I use my 2MP digital for certain
things (eBay, parties, etc.) because it's small, cool, fun, and good
enough quality for what I want to do with the images... just like I use my
cell phone for pretty much the same reasons. At the same time, the audio
qualiy of my cell isn't good enough for me to use it all the time as my
only phone, so I still have a land-based one. It's about the right tool
for the job, not about which format is intriniscally better. Again, this
is just a general observation, not anything directed at Tom. :)

Wrong. To pull a Valentin,

civilian. n. a person whose primary occupation is civil or nonmilitary.
(Collins English Dictionary)

I think you're reaching for a different word, Mafud. Maybe
"accredited" or something similar? PJ's are employed by companies for a

My new SV

2001-12-04 Thread Bob Rapp

G'day all,

Just picked up a SV with a 50 f1.4 lens. In previous discussions, there was
a mention of the early 8 element 7 group. The lens is the 8 element lens and
is in mint condition.

My original Spotmatic I bought new had the 55 f1.8 and I bought a used 50
f1.4 for sports photography. The lens was fabulous in doors but the contrast
outdoors was ordinary. for that reason, I always preferred the 55 f1.8 as my
"normal" lens.

For the rest, the camera is in almost mint condition with no brassing.
Included was a soft case in excellent condition. However, the second shutter
is slow off the mark on slow speeds, and the frame counter does not advance.
Based on the overall condition, it is off to C.R. Kennedy for a CLA.

What is the realistic value of the camera? I paid about 75 USD for it.

Thanks in advance,

Bob Rapp

Re: MX with LX screens, more elaboration.

It's Levente (or Levi) I just like to initial my e-mails regardless of the
preset signature that actually had my name (or it should have) I am from
Hungary, I study in the states now. (at least for a few more days, until
the semester is over)

No hurry.

Hmmm. I never had any problems like that. Well, I got my self an
eyepiece not long ago and with that I noticed the same thing I guess. I
just avoid using it unless I know it will be too bright for me to see the
lightmeter.

OK. So viewing screen gets darker around the edges with the SG-60.

Well. I might have confused you a bit too. I experiment with astro and I
do have one of the astro LX screens, though I did not get to try it out
yet because a few weeks ago I killed my MX while taking pictures of the
meteor shower. I was stupid enough to fire it locked with a defective
cord that takes some extra phisical effort to push. (Actually the cord
died the same night just a little earlier) So I could not get it fixed
yet and it seems I will only be able to after christmas in Hungary. But
there I will not have access to the Astronomy department's telescope. So
that screen will not really serve me too well unless I find a telescope in
Hungary that I can use. (not likely but possible)

So I already have the Clear-glass with center cross (SD-11) screen.
Someone here was explaining how to focus with it. That I did not really
understand so I would appreciate some claification on that too. (remember
I am just an enthusiastic beginner who immediately wants to do all the fun
stuff, astro, infrared :)) I know I am ahead of the game) I can tell you
this. When I was taking pictures of Saturn with a telescope I did not see
jack but the split prism in the wa of focusing. Focusing is NOT EASY.
Positioning the subject in the middle isn't either. So I had the planet
off the one side or the other. (well the other reason for that was the
split prism) Also somebody mentioned that subjet has to be steady. Well
with astronomy we just wish that it is steady. (but of course if it is
not, it's gonan be crap anyway)

So I have a hard time seeing how I should condentrate on the center cross
or hair or whatever... I was glad to be alive and in focus last time I
did this.

So after christmas I will be taking pictures of more landscapes,
architecture, etc. (Budapest) More street photography. In fact birds and
people unaware of my taking pictures is the reason why I want to get a
mirror lens. (looking at 600mm Sigma) The only other screen I have is
the default MX split prism with microprisim collar and it is quite
scratched up. So I figured go LX. Get the SE-60 totaly unmarked matte
one and the new SC-69 that is just like the default screen just supposedly
brighter. My other lenses are 24mm f2.8, 50mm f1.4, 135mm f2.5, 50-250mm
f4. So the SC-69 and the SE-60 will be used with these. Not with a
telescope or a mirror lens.

When I will get the mirror lens I figured I will need to get a screen that
was designed for such lenses. SA-26, SC-26, SE-25. As I said earlier
birds and people is what I will mainly be shooting with the mirror lens.

I was just about to order the SC-69 and SE-60 when I read the mail on the
list. (the super tele screen I will wait with until I get the lens)

So I hope this really clarifies the situation.
