So I guess if your filter factor of Xc Xm Xy requires changing exposure time by Y amount to get same base exposure on the paper, you just dial the exposure difference with the ND wheel. Since I am not sure myself why the exposure should change in the first place, I (will) use it mainly for easy dodging and burning. Why does exposure supposedly change when filtering for VC papers and it doesn't change with VC head? Does it really change? Re[2]: More P67II vs. 645n
Pål, You bring up some very valid points concerning range of the systems and how MF starts to take over 35mm. I easily see that happen to me. Weight/size do sound very important as considerations as does the directions Pentax takes with it's products. Pentax certainly seems to be aiming the 645 as their most capable body in terms of features/image quality. I think that I really would like to see that new 645nII before finalizing a decision. I suspect this depends on many factors, including film, developer, time/temp, subject, etc. I personally don't use it much for the simple reason I like a cooler paper. Plus it turns a funny purple color when selenium toned. Let me apologize to anyone who may have been offended by my earlier comments. I'm well aware that dichro heads produce exactly the same type of light as a VCCE head, and therefore you get exactly the same end results. I used one for 2 years.I was just voicing my frustration - I wish I'd known how much easier a VCCE head is to use when I was making my first enlarger purchase. Re: Ultra-Achromatic Takumar 85mm 4.5
If this is the flourite lens it is special because it transmits ultraviolite light which is useful in some scientific and industrial applications, and because the flourite has extremely low colour dispersion in the visible wavelengths (hence the "Ultra-Achromatic" moniker). It is expensive because flourite is very much more costly than even optical glass. It may also have a rarity factor in its price. The first-time success rate with a good meter beats the first-time success rate of guesstimation anyday (I've worked both ways). Guesstimated exposures work best with fibre papers because they don't contain integral developer activators and will tolerate widely variable developing times better than resin-coated paper will. Exposure times for RC paper printing will accept only about 10% error (20% if you're not fussy). > > > > BTW do different brands of multi-grade papers still have mismatched > > contrast steps? The difference is mostly found in the grade 0 to 1 and 3 to 5 areas, but it's so long since I used other than Agfa that I forget if it's more or less responsive to changed filtration than other brands. But make side by side prints (including skin-tones) with Agfa and anything else and you'd forget about other brands, too. When I was changing over from Ilford Multigrade, I had to reprint the first half of the job I was doing because it was too far below the quality of the Agfa Multicontrast used for the second half to co-exist with it. Agfa MC has a long, linear tonal range in the skin-tones, the Ilford MG paper by comparison seemed to have a short and flat range in the skin-tones and no depth in the dark tones where the Agfa showed distinct tonal seperation. This was despite the overall contrast of the prints being identical. > > I think it would be a PITA if the > > contrast steps of a VCCE head only gave linear steps from grade to > > grade with one particular brand of paper. At least with a dichro head > > you can find the correct setting for ~any~ grade with ~any~ brand of > > paper. > > I'm not really following you here. Anything you can do with a dichro > head you can do with a VCCE head (well, except print color ;) ). It's > got stepless filtration too. > Point taken . The variable contrast heads I was familiar with have discrete grade steps so are unlike the Saunders/LPL unit. One type uses twin lamps, one with a magenta filter and one with a yellow filter. The output of each lamp is then varied to get the right colour mix for each grade, but the control is by an electronic panel that has only half-grade steps and has no channel options for different paper brands (why should Ilford cater for other brand papers, after all). The other type uses a simple rotary dial that drops a single appropriate grade filter into the light path, but does not use the two filters and compensating ND filter of a VCCE head. As your VCCE head is infinitely variable then I acknowledge you could use any value between the grade markings to equalise the results of different paper brands. Re: Zenitar 16/2.8 -- Am I Enabled?
Hi, I have one and I have found that the coating on the front element is quite soft, I found this out the hard way carrying it around one day without (the easily loseable) lens cap and letting it occasionally bump into the exterior of my camera bag. Marked up the front element (yes I tried carbon black), but I haven't noticed any degradation in flare control. Just the same, I am now very careful WRT the front element. It certainly won't stand what Pentax's SMC coating will. Mine also had the subpar machine job on the mount, but it fit and worked smooth on my Pentaxes, so that was the important thing. Thanks, William in Utah. A flashy problem
Howdy people A friend wants me to photograph bullets hitting various targets to see what happens to the bullets (and the targets) when they are hit. We think we can trigger a flash by way of a velocity meter (his rifle club has the means to measure the speed of bullets), so we think we can tap into the circuitry to trigger a flash. What I need some help on is which flash to use, and what I need to do to trigger the flash. I thought about doing this in very low light, so I can leave the shutter open and capture the image when the flash fires. Any suggestions will be gratefully received. The eBay Follies

I once sold a bunch of classical LP records. I had paid $4.50 to $8.50 for each of them, and was hoping to get $30.00 each, which, if "Buy It Now" had existed at that time, probably would have been my BIN price. As it happened, more than sixteen of the records broke $100 and the highest sold for $262.00. A number of others sold for $30-$80. Re: Why do you choose or stay in Pentax ?
Like so many others, I started with a K1000 I bought brand-new in college. I'd used the camera at school, and when I went shopping I found it was all I could afford (took a whole tax refund check & bought it, a couple of lenses and a flash. I still have the lenses and body.). When I got married, it didn't hurt that my husband used K-mount bodies, too. It's sort of blossomed from there. I have three SLRs and a 645, and I hope to be enabled for a 67 in the next year or so. I've got old lenses and new lenses, and they fit on EVERYTHING I own. The quality is outstanding. What a feeling! I for one almost never look at anything other than "buy-it-now" -- no time to wait out an auction and don't want to bid max in the beginning. EBay makes it easy by puting this red icon next to the items. So the point is, that as a seller, you don't necessarily get the benefit of bigger crowd by dragging it on longer. If a seller is content to sell at a price, then (if I were him) I'd use that as "buy-it-now" price, and let the auction takes its course if it doesn't sell that way. In fact, I tend to use a low "buy-it-now" price, to get it over with quickly. Tonghang. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Why Pentax?
My father died when I was eight (1975), and some of the most vivid memories I have are of him and his camera equipment - his beloved Pentax Spotmatic SP (which will always be my favorite body, no matter what) and a variety of oddball screw mount lenses. I used to tag along with him when I was five or six, going down to the local camera store to see all the hot equipment roll in. His buddy had opened the first of what is now a chain of 14 stores in Oregon, and Dad used to fill in for him behind the counter when he needed to run errands. Lots of laughs and losing bills in Liar's Poker. Dad left me his camera gear, and that is what I use (although I just added the PZ-1p and 28-70/4...still feeling a bit guilty about it). His Spotmatic is very rough around the edges, but I'll go down next month and drop $155 at the shop he used to support for a CLA...I'll shed a tear or two when I get it back, imagining the thrill he got from it in tip-top shape - our hands on the same body, playing with the solid feel of his SMC Takumar 85/1.9, our eyes looking with wonder and joy through the same viewfinder. OT: Consumer psychology (was:Why do you choose or stay in Pentax ?)
The psychology of brand loyalty is interesting. Emperical studies have shown that when consumers are indifferent between two choices, A & B, and are forced to pick one, they will be happier with A if they chose A or happier with B if they chose B. In short, the choice you MADE becomes the RIGHT choice in your mind. The other issue with brands is an information issue. I know and trust what this brand name has offered in the past and it becomes a good way to navigate thru the myriad choices in the marketplace. > Why do you choose or stay in Pentax? Why not N, C or M? > > My answer is simple! I want the quality of Pentax lenses. > > How about you? Well. I don't have such a great story about me and Pentax as I read here. If I was given a Pentax camera by grandfather as Take was I would stick to it forever specialy know that I have learned a lot of respect for him. Daniel wrote about his lucky buy (because how you can call a situation when there was no M in stock for him to buy?) and staying with the brand for 30 years - that's impressive! Than as Emilio wrote: "Maybe all we are different, original people??". I just like to do something different than others or at least in a different way. And since Pentax is not as popular in Poland as N, C, M are it was my pick even before I've learned about it's quality. I guess I'm a bit snobbish... Gabor wrote: "I like to mix old MF gear with the latest AF ones without any unnecessary limitations. No other company offers this possibility. Also, SMC is great. It definitely works." No question about that. Sad truth is that I have to pay for it :-( Getting C FD lenses might be cheaper - at least in an amateur range. But hey, I'm snobbish! I guess, I went for Pentax because the fact that I could use the MF and AF lenses interchangeably although I was a bit to optimistic about how cheap I can get those MF ones. In communistic era Pentax wasn't officialy present on Polish market so there isn't so many used lenses as I wish to be offered. But I hope to get into ebay soon - I just have to solve a cheap way to send payments - or maybe I don't wont to do it? I'm not having too much cash allready... :-) Than, what I really loved about new Pentax cameras was the desing that makes them simple to use. Only playing with Russian SLR Zenit before Pentax I knew how to take pictures right away! The mistery with my friends EOS 3 starten with an uneasy to find on-off switch... And now, I will stick to Pentax just to have the priviledge of being a part of PDML :-) Maciej PS: Collin wrote abut sticking to one brand and "Camera owners are the same. Look at the newsgroups and the sparring between Canon & Nikon owners, and the arrogance of Leica & Contax owners. Blad owners look down on Fuji, Mamiya & Pentax, but Each of them knows the real truth."We had a saying going on the Polish foto news group: Thera are owners od Nikons, user of Canons and people that are making photos with Pentax. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. I was in the USAF stationed in South Korea in the early 1980's when I finally saved up enough to buy a SLR. I looked at all of them available at the BX and settled on a SuperProgram, SMC-A 28/2.8, and SMC-A 70-210/4. Price was certainly an issue then but I don't regret the decision at all - probably one of the best I ever made. I decided to go the AF route a couple of years ago because my family wanted to be enabled. (They were a little intimidated with the SP.) I sold the SP body for more than I purchased it for! I never has to do anything but replace batteries in that body. I'm now using a ZX-5n, SMC-FA 28-80/3.5-5.6, SMC-FA 80-320/4.5-5.6, Vivitar Series 1 AF 19-35/3.5-4.5, SMC-FA 50/1.4, Vivitar 100/3.5 Macro and a cheapo Phoenix ZBIF-92P flash. This is a pretty sweet setup (I know some will argue the lens, but it works for me - for now) which was put together at a reasonable price. I shudder to think what a similar N rig would have cost. I purchased the Vivitar lens based on recommendations and comments from the PDML. I wouldn't have known about those lens and the "bang for the buck" they provide without the PDML. I did attend a N School day in November. I have to admit that Pentax has nothing like that here in the States. I was astounded at the amount of information and quality of instruction. I honestly believe that Pentax could easily increase both market share and visibility if they could/would do something similar. _ - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: Why do you choose or stay in Pentax ?
Why do I choose or stay with Pentax? Good question. Why indeed. I suppose because I like the underdog. I first used a Pentax (SP500) at art college. For those students without their own cameras, there were half a dozen Zenits and a Spottie. We raced for the Spottie, and I was that desperate NOT to have a Zenit, and the single default Spottie was such a must have, that I bagged it every time, even though the film door latch was a short length of tape. It was nice to use and didn't chew the film up at the end of the roll like the Russian contraptions. After college, I saved up and bought a Practica where I experimented with a 135mm lens. Later, I got A Fujica ST605N which I loved, but it still didn't have the quality or the kudos of something like a Pentax. I aspired to a Pentax, and when I could, I finally achieved my prize: a brand new Pentax MX. Cost for the body only was a few pennies over £80 from Techno Cameras just outside Thames TV in the Euston Road in London, 1980. I was working by now, and could afford such luxuries (NOT!). The MX was a different league altogether from the Practica and the Fujica. It was beautiful, small, elegant, tasteful. It was real quality. I was delighted. Brand-wise, I had considered Canon and Nikon. There was a lad at college who dressed in plaid jackets (we all wore T-shirts and jeans) and had grotty glasses and a permanent dribble at the corners of his mouth. He raved about Nikons. That was enough to put me off for life. Canon, to me, seemed even more mainstream. They were sponsoring the 1980 (soccer) World Cup (if memory serves) and I shied from them for that reason. Canons and Nikons were everywhere. I hated following trends, it was so 'uninspiring'. Pentax, however, seemed sleek, just the right amount of 'not as popular, yet proper quality'. For this reason I might have considered Minolta, except that I had fond memories of the Spotmatic, plus the recently introduced MX beckoned. The size of it! Even in my huge mits, it was just a delight to use. I knew I would have one from the day I first saw one. To actually own one I seem to recall, well, I guess my colleagues thought I'd been on the mushrooms. Permanent smile. That's really it. From then on, no other brand came close, with one notable exception: Mamiya. As my career progressed, so did my pay, and the medium format bug caught me. Along came an RB67 with waist-level finder and standard lens (90 mil Sekor? I can't remember). The cost in 1981 was horrendous: over £400. I had 2 MXs and 3 or 4 lenses by now. A few years later, the RB67 had gone, and a SMC 15mm f3.5 had joined the troupe in it's place, along with a 400mm. Over the years, lens came and went, including (sadly) the 15 mil, and the second MX drifted off. At one point I was down to the first MX and a 50 and 28. Until about 5 years ago when the bug hit again. The rest, as they say, is history. So why Pentax? Niche quality. Personal history. Not following the flock, going off on my own (if there's a few following me, well hey: that's, ahhh, cool. Baby ;-) Thanks for the thread. Nice one. Cotty PS - the original MX, purchased as body only, plus a SMC 28mm 2.8 lens, are still with me to this day, both retired. The MX has never been serviced, and everything works fine, top shutter speeds obviously adrift a bit, otherwise perfect. They sit oin my desk as an always available touchy-feely monument. Re: MZ-5n
With the 50mm lens, knowing how some things tend to be more expensive over there it sounds like a decent deal with a warranty. Also it offers ALOT more than the MZ-50, like DOF, better lens compatability, faster AF, more metering modes ( I'm still trying to learn the ZOne system to use the spot meter ) auto bracketing ( my god send with slides ). And your getting one of the sharpest lenses possible with it what more do you want. OH it may seem harder to change some settings but you'll appreciate it's interface once you learn your way around it, you never have to take your eye out of the finder to change anything ( ok film, batteries and lenses ) --- alex <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Could you do some enablement about the Pentax MZ-5n > ? > I have the opportunity to get a used one with an AF > 50mm 1,7 lens, but it > feels more difficult to manipulate than my MZ-50. > Price would be 325 euros > (about $300), do you think that is OK, given there > is a 6 month warranty ? > - __ Web-hosting solutions for home and business! http://website.yahoo.ca - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. The 85/1.8 was one of the first excellent lenses I ever used. I'd go for it if it's close to $300.00 You can find new Canon and Minolta 2700 dpi film scanners for under $400.00 (of course they won't scan prints so there's a trade-off: they do have higher resolution and probably a little batter Dmax than the HP). -- Original Message -- >Okay... so I've been paging through the PDML archives for about a week >now, and I think I've read just about every posting I deemed helpful >concerning which scanner to buy (and theres a LOT of them!... thanks for >you past contributions). Re: Why do you choose or stay in Pentax ?
My first Camera was an Exa Ia, when I joined a "Foto AG" in school (13 years old). I thought of an Agfa non-SLR and my parents and I went off the store with the Exa. After all an SLR! Seven years later I had the money to buy a better camera: the MX. I went into the store thinking of Minolta and got out with a Pentax. Never heard before. But was a nice little thing looking better than Minolta. And I never regretted it! Two years ago I sold the MX to my cousin whos MX made difficulties transporting more than 20 pictures. At this time I had had my MX repaired by Pentax in Hamburg -misfunction of the trigger- and they had changed the bayonet, too (I didn't think it was necessary but they repaired all they could find). It was somewhat heavy to change lenses then. And my cousin only has two lenses and changes seldom so it doesn't matter. In the meantime I had bought the MZ-5N and it feels better in my hand than the MX. And if I want the feeling of metal I go back to my K1000 I chased for a low price in the nineties as reserve. And I never want to change because I am totally satisfied with Pentax using old and new lenses how I want! Bernd - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: HP Photosmart S20 (buy it?!)
I love my older PhotoSmart. It has replaced the crappyscan(tm) that I used to use. I scan only slides and negatives. The only issue I have is scanning prints. It gives me awful lines down the center when it scans prints of any size. I've cleaned it and calibrated it but still those damn lines! I have no issues with slides and negatives however. Mine is an older SCSI version that was given to me free of charge new in box because the previous owner was literally using it as a door stop. The other issue that may or may not be a challenge is the driver/software when using it in windows. It was sort of a chore to set it up (and I'm a UNIX sys-admin!) but once everything was happy it was love at first scan. Hope this helps Christian On Tuesday 29 January 2002 15:13, Jerome wrote: > Okay... so I've been paging through the PDML archives for about a week > now, and I think I've read just about every posting I deemed helpful > concerning which scanner to buy (and theres a LOT of them!... thanks for > you past contributions). All this discussion is based on assuming that the lens would open to F2.8 to begin with, which may not be the case at all. Sure, you can see the aperture mechanism reduce itself as you zoom toward the short end, but how do you know it would go to F2.8? What if it only went to F3.5? Pentax has chosen to be faithful to their customers, and I have chosen to stay with Pentax, being this one of the main reasons. These last few days, one of my most used lenses is a 1975 SMC Pentax 85 mm. 1.8, on a 2001 MZ-S. Besides, the lenses are fine, and both them and the camera bodies I own have been reliable through the years. They have worked well for me and I hope this will continue in future. (10 seconds later...) ...In reviewing this particular case, I see where he 'could' have gone wrong ("broke a number of rules" as you put it)... but, still, here's my question: This particular person (forgot the name already) sold first, THEN ended the auction, versus the other way around... But "vice versa or versa vice", these two seem to be only 'technically' different. (ie, the result is exactly the same). Anyhow, the question is, since eBay specifically makes a provision for ending your auction early and selling to the current highest bidder, then if you do so, how is this breaking the rule? Or perhaps your disgust is in reference to the (seemingly trivial) technicality that I sited above (?). Thanks for clarifying. .jerome. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: OT: Canceling my EBay auction (advice sought)
I was in the same situation (to cancel or not to cancel) not too long ago. I ended up cancelling. Because my concious tends to be pathetically guilty about such things, I had the same dilemma. I went as far as to email each person who had bidded individually (pathetic, huh?)... But anyway... here's what I learned: In short, I would suggest a terse explanation. Unfortunately, it seems that (though it seems like the "right thing" to do), the more information you supply, the more you leave yourself open to criticism and "opinions" being voiced. Besides, the top of your page will say something like "AUCTION HAS ENDED EARLY"... the part where you get to add to the description will be way at the bottom of the page... and I think you'd be surprised at how many people dont even bother to scroll down once they see that the auction is dead. > And will my name forever be mud? Definitely not. I think that memories are incredibly short on eBay. What matters (over time) is the feedback, and like you pointed out: > people (can't) post feedback unless they're the buyer. Your post (and hence your conscious) already shows that you are not doing such a thing maliciously, so in that respect I think you can personally rest assured. However, I will advise the following: (I guess this is for future reference, since I just reread your post, and noticed that you already ended the auction)... Be CERTAIN that you are not underselling yourself. Sometimes you will be surprised how much some people (perhaps in very remote, smaller markets) will be willing to pay for an item when you may deem it significantly less in value. Is 4 days early worth the potential of an extra xx amount of dollars? In my case, I was certain that the bids would not go higher than the price given by the person who wanted me to end the auction. Why? (a) I checked the history on eBay (completed items) on how much identical items sold for previously. And (b) the price they gave was a couple of dollars above the cost of buying it new on a few other websites (they needed the item urgently) Hope this helps. .jerome. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: FA 28-70 f/4
To have a constant 4.0 can be an advantage when you use an old non-computer-flash (like I do). So I don't have to think twice on controlling the aperture while changing the focal length. Taking pictures on a wedding for example would be enervating otherwise. Best regards Bernd Date: Mon, 28 Jan 2002 21:55:36 -0600 From: "Gary Murphy" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: FA 28-70 f/4 I recently acquired the above lens and would like to ask what may be one of those "stupid" questions. I know this lens uses the diaphragm to keep the constant f/4 aperture and was noticing it looks as though if Pentax would have kept it in the full-open position, it would be a f/2.8-f/4. (Or really close to that) My question is, why did Pentax choose to use the diaphragm to have a constant f/4 lens rather than a f/2.8-f/4, which they could, I think, sold for a higher price, or am I missing something? Since I'll be out of work all February and here was money in the hand with no long-distance risks, cons, or misunderstandings, my wife said "Do it!" I just did it. We made the sale at a nearby shopping center. Now I must break a lot of hopeful hearts and look like a heel by killng the auction four days early. I don't want to lie; I want to be perfectly straightforward about why I ended the auction. Can someone give me advice on what to write, and how? Should I explain my financial situation, grovel, and apologize? Or just write something terse, like, "sold the unit to a local high bidder"? And will my name forever be mud? I don't think people can post feedback unless they're the buyer, right? Re: Why do you choose or stay in Pentax ?
I started with an all manual Cosina (K-mount) and I traded it for a used MZ-M. Then I discovered the PDML and another meaning of the verb 'enable'. Reasons: - I can have nice lenses at an acceptable price (for an amateur), and use it in all bodies. - I like the ease of use of some bodies (MZ-M, MZ-5n,...). - The PDML and PUG ! (nice people and lots of information and knowledge). - I still don't need anything that Pentax doesn't have... but I see a 'digital slr need' in the near future that Pentax must address. Re: Why do you choose or stay in Pentax ?
I started with a K1000. I really liked the results. I changed bodies (owned MX, ME Super, LX and ZX-M. Also used ZX-5n and ZX-7), lenses (a lot, now just 4, all primes), and always was satisfied with the results. I love the optical performance of the lenses. SMC is fantastic. I really like the feeling of lenses and bodies and it's design and concept. I don't have a reason to switch to other brands. It fills my needs, at least by now. Re: Metz CT60-1 and MZ-S
The CT-2 does do TTL using a SCA500C cable, with a 300 series adaptor when its set to the M setting. However, on older models, you may need to get a metz factory upgrade to the electronics to get the gun to work properly with a 372 adaptor. T. Gelatin has a very much lower refractive index than glass and its dispersion of different colours is practically nil. Re: New Enlarger Up and Running
Exposure changes after filter changes are no problem if you have an enlarging meter. Just meter before the change, then adjust the filter, meter again, and the meter will indicate how much exposure you've gained or lost. My personal meter is a custom made unit (by a Mr DeRatz in Brookvale, Sydney who has sadly retired - Aussie members might remember his products as the Zelox brand that was sold by Ted's in their previous incarnation as George's). A neat feature is that it allow's contrast readings on the easel that indicate the best paper-grade to dial in. BTW do different brands of multi-grade papers still have mismatched contrast steps? I've only used Agfa for several years but prior to that each different brand I used had a different scale of filter settings for the various grades. I think it would be a PITA if the contrast steps of a VCCE head only gave linear steps from grade to grade with one particular brand of paper. At least with a dichro head you can find the correct setting for ~any~ grade with ~any~ brand of paper. RE: FA 28-70/f4 AL why not F2.8?
Why did Pentax choose to make a f/4 constant zoom using the diaphragm to maintain that, rather than > making a f/2.8 - f/4 zoom on this lens. > > Am I making sense? :-) Yep sure. One answer is that the constant relative aperture makes it much easier to use with non-ttl flash. Another answer is that Pentax may have chosen to make a better quality f4 (with the above mentioned advantage) lens rather succumb to the marketing allure of that F/2.8 aperture on the wide end. (As explained by our fellow Pentaxians.) See, that way, instead of us complaining about how bad this lens is wide open (like some other Pentax 2.8-4 zooms), it's pretty much universally loved with the slight criticism that it takes a bit of a quality hit at 28mm. (just a bit of barrel distortion.) I love this lens. I don't think opening up the wide end to 2.8 would do anything good for it. F2.8 just never cut it for me in any low light situation, anyway. Carry a couple of fast primes. Or an extra body with a fast prime. Too expensive? Naa. Try an old Vivitar 28/2 (close focus) or 28/1.9. I got a 28/2 CF for $60. A $90 F 28/2.8 would probably be much better than the 28-70 opened up to 2.8 on the wide end. I hear the FA 28/2.8 is great. I couldn't live without a fast, wide lens. I carry that old viv 28/2 everywhere. Fits in a jacket pocket. Now I'm looking for that M 85/2 to put in the other pocket. RE: Why do you choose or stay in Pentax ?
It all started with a K1000. . . . After that, it was a combination of getting a new camera that was compatible with the lenses we already had, the compactness of the cameras, and the compatibility between MF and AF and even potentially screwmount lenses [hopes of finding a cheap SM 500 4.5]. What's with this M-lens bigotry??
> CB> Hey Pentax brother, > CB> Don't get the "M" lenses! > CB> 'K' for best overall optical design, or 'A' for color & contrast > improvements. Even the SuperMultiCoated Tak 50/1.4 would be better than the > 'M' and would look nice on a KX! I've owned and tried every version of the 50/1.4 except the Super-Takumar and the F, and I certainly don't think there's anything wrong with the M version. Most of the variations between the versions are well within the bounds of sample variation. It may be true that the M lens is not quite as sharp (or not made to standards that are quite as strict) as a really good Super-Multi-Coated Takumar or A lens, but it's very close and it's certainly no dog. I really like the M lens, personally--I kept it and the Super-Multi-Coated Takumar. The M lens has a lot going for it--the focusing feel, balance, and construction quality are very pleasing...better than the A, F, or FA. --Mike * * * "Photography is simple. Zenitar 16/2.8 -- Am I Enabled?
To those PDMLers who purchased the Zenitar 16/2.8 fisheye: Out of curiosity, what were your impressions of the build quality -- in particular, the multicoating on the front element? Was it perfect or near-perfect? I just got one of them, allegedly new-in-box, a couple of days ago, and it seems functional enough. Aperture ring has nice clicks, and the focus has a good feel. But I couldn't help noticing little things like the bayonet mount having ever-so-slightly jagged edges in places where the Pentax machining is perfect. For the relatively low prices these lenses go for, a little funkiness doesn't seem abnormal. The coating on the front element does concern me a bit, however. It seems to have a couple of pinpoint imperfections and a tiny straight scratch. Is this typical, in your experience, or did I get a bad example? RE: Why do you choose or stay in Pentax ?
I started with a Zenit E in 1982. We never really went far and neither did my photography. In 1993, I was on a shopping spree in Guildford and saw a P30 with 35-80 lens anf AF260 flash second hand for about £150. I had an immediate and uncontrollable desire to buy it for some reason, and let that desire follow its course. I then added a second hand Vivitar 70-200 with 2*TC and eventually a 500mm mirror lens. We had some nice times, but I was too busy partying to do much serious photography. About 2 years ago, we had a baby boy and I started taking soo many photographs that I started to want better results. I finally had a hankering for AF, having shunned it for many years. I read a review for what was then the new MZ-30, and thought it sounded fantastic. I thought it would be great to buy a new camera which could still use my old telephoto lenses. Little did I know that I would immediately want a 70-300 in AF. Then I found the PDML, and then that most of my old lenses were pups. By this time I was tied in to Pentax, but the more I opened my eyes the more I realised that this was a good thing as moany of the lenses were fantastic, and I now have the MZ-S and 6 AF lenses. No way I am going anywhere else but Pentax now. The only reason for doing so would be digital, but I still dont rate the offerings, and I really dont want to replace all my glass. > >Why do you choose or stay in Pentax?
