Re: wide-angle: pictures made with FA*24/2.0 and one example for flare

2002-01-29 Thread Sherwin Abesamis

That really is a strange case of flare. I too own that lens and have never
seen anything like it, and I often tend to shoot straight into lights at
times. I have a shot of a long exposure of a ferris wheel at night with two
spotlights - one aimed directly at the camera - clearly visible in the
picture and it exhibits very little to no flare at all. I concur with the
others that it must have been a lens hood issue.

Sorry for that. I will install Netscape to test it and to work on that. (The

Were you using the big hood supplied with the lens? Where was the sun?

Well, before you asked I was sure I used the big lenshood. But now ...
The pictures was taken on the old cementory in Salzburg/Austria, and the sun
came from the left from above the trees.

645 - remember we are talking about glass here, not the bodies.

I doubt there are any meaningful differences in optical quality among the
lenses for the two systems. All lenses are professional and can deliver
professional result though there are lenses that are better than others.
If you scan the MF newsgroups you'll see that both systems receive praise
for the lenses. In particular, the zoom lenses seems to be incredibly good
for what they are. For what its worth, the FA645 45-85 was tested by a
German magazine as the best tested MF lens ever.
It's true that the 67 system offer longer lenses than the 645 but only
marginally so. The difference in 35mm system terms is 500 to 400mm. In the
short end, both starts at 20mm in 35mm system terms and apart from the
fish-eye lens for the 67, the 67 system doesn't really offer anything over
the 645 in the wide end. The 645 system offer focal lengths from 20mm to
400mm in 35mm terms whereas the 67 offers from 22 to 500mm plus a fish-eye.

Most of us had the idea when switching to medium format of going all the
way to 67. However, as soon as you start using MF you'll probably start to
wish to use MF as much as possible expanding the system further from what
you initially planned.
I believe the fundamental question is how you plan to use your MF gear.
Never underestimate the size/weight factor.
You really should take a look on the new 645II before you make up your
mind; it feels quite different from the older model. It's also such a
beauty; compact with both mirror-lock and mirror pre-fire making it a
superb landscape and macro MF outfit. The dataimprinting is even neater
than that of the MZ-S.

Hi,

IT IS NOW THREE DAYS SINCE THE CLOSE OF THE AUCTION AND I WOULD BE
GRATEFUL FOR AN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT ASAP.

You have won the following auction:

Iomega Zip 100 SCSI Drive Boxed Item 1324433310

at £52. Please can you let me know your preferred method of delivery
(Royal Mail, recorded delivery / insured / not insured etc) and I will
calculate the postage accordingly. Rest assured I will not inflate
postage costs by adding spurious packaging charges.

IT IS NOW THREE DAYS SINCE THE CLOSE OF THE AUCTION AND I WOULD BE
GRATEFUL FOR AN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT ASAP.

I understand that there are certain circumstances that would prevent this
from happening, and I am prepared to wait until the weekend (Feb 3rd) for
a reply. If I haven't had anything by then, I'm afraid I will have to
relist the item and cancel your bids through eBay, who will be notified
of your inaction and will no doubt act accordingly.

Could you please acknowledge this email?

Thanks,

Steve Cottrell

A really nice new lens on your budget would be the Tamron 28-105/4-5.6 or
the Tokina 28-105. Both are terrific values for the money. The Tamron is
nice and light and a really decent performer.generally around $150 or
so new (I paid $158 for mine). The Tokina is heavier and a better build,
and a bit closer to the $200 mark I think, but an excellent lens. Both of
these are autofocus lens, ideal for the ZX-5n.

I've heard nothing but bad things about the Sigma 28-105/2.8-4...not real
sharp, poor contrast, not a very highly rated lens. The Vivitar has been
rated both as generally pretty good, or generally pretty lousy..depends on
whose review you look at!

The FA28-70/4 is outstanding! It is a bit slow but if you go with the new
800 speed films, you just might be alright. A really good lens in the
28-70/2.8 category is a used Tokina, but these are probably a bit over
your budget...they seem to list and sell for around $235 or so in good
condition.

There's an interesting psychology in the consumer.
It seems that people rarely change brands, and
often become brand-dependant as a sense of personal
security and fulfillment. A product of Madison Ave.
and our culture of consumerism and greed.

Get a cell phone from provider #1 you won't like
change to provider #2 without good reason. Like
really poor service.

Get a car of make X and you'll always hate make Y.
(Note the regular poking fun between Chevy Ford
owners, the pride of MB BMW owners, and the
condension toward us who drive rice burners.)

Camera owners are the same. Look at the newsgroups
and the sparring between Canon Nikon owners,
and the arrogance of Leica Contax owners.
Blad owners look down on Fuji, Mamiya Pentax, but
Each of them knows the real truth.

Some Linhof users won't lower themselves to using a
Toyo, but maybe an Arca-Swiss. Bender is for
beginners. But Toyo users sure got the best
bargain, Arca-Swiss users got the best engineering,
and Bender builders know every little nuance of the
unit's behavior.

The psychology is amazing to watch in action.

But to the question: I'm happy with Pentax 35mm.
There's no cause to change. In roll film,
my Spartaflex sold new in the 30s for about $30 or
so. Not much to look at, but it's just for fun.
In 4x5, well, Pentax isn't in that arena...yet.

Well, because as it moves from 2.8 to 4, there is a change in f stop

Re: Why do you choose or stay in Pentax ?

2002-01-29 Thread Christian Skofteland

My first SLR was a Ricoh KR-5 Super given to me as a gift for my birthday in
1983. It was a real dog but served its purpose for several years. Later I
traded it for a better Ricoh but this one had an annoying habit of having
the mirror stick in the up position and requried a hard slap or two after
every shot to get the mirror to drop. In the years I owned those cameras i
acquired a good amount of k-mount lenses so when I decided to buy a new SLR I
had very little choice but to buy a Pentax if I didn't want to try to replace
all my lenses.

So which Pentax to buy? Well, I'd lusted after N F3HP's for a long time
and I knew that there was a Pentax with very similar features called the LX
so I did some investigation and bought one early last year. ;-)

I didn't realize I had entered into a cult on my own accord until after
joining the PDML...

I had no idea Pentax was renowned for the optical quality of it's lenses. I
didn't know that screw mount Takumars could be used on modern AF k-mount
bodies. I had no idea that the medium format crowd were such zealots. I
didn't know about enablement or LX obsession.

Well, I have been enabled (MX, various accessories) and being happy with
manual focus 35mm cameras I will continue to stay with Pentax because I have
come to realize how timeless their cameras are.

RE: Why do you choose or stay in Pentax ?

2002-01-29 Thread Rob Brigham

I started with a Zenit E in 1982. We never really went far and neither
did my photography.

In 1993, I was on a shopping spree in Guildford and saw a P30 with 35-80
lens anf AF260 flash second hand for about £150. I had an immediate and
uncontrollable desire to buy it for some reason, and let that desire
follow its course. I then added a second hand Vivitar 70-200 with 2*TC
and eventually a 500mm mirror lens. We had some nice times, but I was
too busy partying to do much serious photography.

About 2 years ago, we had a baby boy and I started taking soo many
photographs that I started to want better results. I finally had a
hankering for AF, having shunned it for many years. I read a review for
what was then the new MZ-30, and thought it sounded fantastic. I
thought it would be great to buy a new camera which could still use my
old telephoto lenses. Little did I know that I would immediately want a
70-300 in AF.

Then I found the PDML, and then that most of my old lenses were pups.
By this time I was tied in to Pentax, but the more I opened my eyes the
more I realised that this was a good thing as moany of the lenses were
fantastic, and I now have the MZ-S and 6 AF lenses.

No way I am going anywhere else but Pentax now. The only reason for
doing so would be digital, but I still dont rate the offerings, and I
really dont want to replace all my glass.

Why do you choose or stay in Pentax? Why not N, C or M?
My answer is simple! I want the quality of Pentax lenses.

Zenitar 16/2.8 -- Am I Enabled?

2002-01-29 Thread Stephen Moore

To those PDMLers who purchased the Zenitar 16/2.8 fisheye:

Out of curiosity, what were your impressions of the
build quality -- in particular, the multicoating on the
front element? Was it perfect or near-perfect?

I just got one of them, allegedly new-in-box, a couple of
days ago, and it seems functional enough. Aperture ring has
nice clicks, and the focus has a good feel. But I couldn't
help noticing little things like the bayonet mount having
ever-so-slightly jagged edges in places where the Pentax
machining is perfect. For the relatively low prices these
lenses go for, a little funkiness doesn't seem abnormal.

The coating on the front element does concern me a bit, however.
It seems to have a couple of pinpoint imperfections and a tiny
straight scratch. Is this typical, in your experience, or did I
get a bad example?

TIA,

Stephen

So am I expecting too much for $129 or should I just get a
Lens Pen or carbon black

What's with this M-lens bigotry??

2002-01-29 Thread Mike Johnston

 CB Hey Pentax brother,
CB Don't get the M lenses!
CB 'K' for best overall optical design, or 'A' for color contrast
improvements. Even the SuperMultiCoated Tak 50/1.4 would be better than the
'M' and would look nice on a KX!

I've owned and tried every version of the 50/1.4 except the Super-Takumar
and the F, and I certainly don't think there's anything wrong with the M
version. Most of the variations between the versions are well within the
bounds of sample variation. It may be true that the M lens is not quite as
sharp (or not made to standards that are quite as strict) as a really good
Super-Multi-Coated Takumar or A lens, but it's very close and it's certainly
no dog. I really like the M lens, personally--I kept it and the
Super-Multi-Coated Takumar. The M lens has a lot going for it--the focusing
feel, balance, and construction quality are very pleasing...better than the
A, F, or FA.

It all started with a K1000. . . . After that, it was a
combination of getting a new camera that was compatible
with the lenses we already had, the compactness of the

RE: FA 28-70/f4 AL why not F2.8?

2002-01-29 Thread Christopher Lillja

Why did Pentax choose to make a f/4 constant zoom using the diaphragm to maintain
that, rather than
 making a f/2.8 - f/4 zoom on this lens.

 Am I making sense? :-)

Yep sure. One answer is that the constant relative aperture makes it much easier to
use with non-ttl flash. Another answer is that Pentax may have chosen to make a better
quality f4 (with the above mentioned advantage) lens rather succumb to the marketing
allure of that F/2.8 aperture on the wide end. (As explained by our fellow
Pentaxians.)

See, that way, instead of us complaining about how bad this lens is wide open (like
some other Pentax 2.8-4 zooms), it's pretty much universally loved with the slight
criticism that it takes a bit of a quality hit at 28mm. (just a bit of barrel
distortion.)

I love this lens. I don't think opening up the wide end to 2.8 would do anything good
for it. F2.8 just never cut it for me in any low light situation, anyway. Carry a
couple of fast primes. Or an extra body with a fast prime. Too expensive? Naa. Try an
old Vivitar 28/2 (close focus) or 28/1.9. I got a 28/2 CF for $60. A $90 F 28/2.8
would probably be much better than the 28-70 opened up to 2.8 on the wide end. I hear
the FA 28/2.8 is great.

I couldn't live without a fast, wide lens. I carry that old viv 28/2 everywhere. Fits
in a jacket pocket. Now I'm looking for that M 85/2 to put in the other pocket. But
the 28-70/4 pretty much lives on my MZ5

Re: New Enlarger Up and Running

2002-01-29 Thread Anthony Farr

Exposure changes after filter changes are no problem if you have an
enlarging meter. Just meter before the change, then adjust the filter,
meter again, and the meter will indicate how much exposure you've gained or
lost.

My personal meter is a custom made unit (by a Mr DeRatz in Brookvale, Sydney
who has sadly retired - Aussie members might remember his products as the
Zelox brand that was sold by Ted's in their previous incarnation as
George's). A neat feature is that it allow's contrast readings on the easel
that indicate the best paper-grade to dial in.

BTW do different brands of multi-grade papers still have mismatched contrast
steps? I've only used Agfa for several years but prior to that each
different brand I used had a different scale of filter settings for the
various grades. I think it would be a PITA if the contrast steps of a VCCE
head only gave linear steps from grade to grade with one particular brand of
paper. At least with a dichro head you can find the correct setting for
~any~ grade with ~any~ brand of paper.

(snip)

Every time you change the contrast on a dichro head you change
the exposure time by an unknown amountI found this to be a huge
pain in the ass, and a problem that pretty much went unmentioned or
glossed over when I was seeking enlarger advice the first time.

I suspect I'm about 1/3 more productive with a VCCE head vs. a
 dichro.

Thanks Mike. Another question: Obviously a VCCE head is convenient. Is it
superior to gel filters below the lens in terms of image quality? I've
considered the possibility of putting gel filters behind the diffusion
glass on my ancient Omega cold light head. It's accessible. Would this be
better than gels below the lens? I've been using gels below the lens ever
since I went to cold light, but it bugs me. I figure why worry about lens
resolution if you're going to put a cheap gel filter below it.

The CT-2 does do TTL using a SCA500C cable, with a 300 series adaptor when

Well, a local buyer saw the ad and made me a sweet offer if I'd cancel the ad. After

I ended the auction. Can someone give me advice on what to write, and how? Should I

To have a constant 4.0 can be an advantage when you use an old

I recently acquired the above lens and would like to ask what may be one of
those stupid questions.

I know this lens uses the diaphragm to keep the constant f/4 aperture and
was noticing it looks as though if
Pentax would have kept it in the full-open position, it would be a
f/2.8-f/4. (Or really close to that)

My question is, why did Pentax choose to use the diaphragm to have a
constant f/4 lens rather than a f/2.8-f/4,
which they could, I think, sold for a higher price, or am I missing
something? (Wouldn't be the first time) :-)

Re: OT: Canceling my EBay auction (advice sought)

2002-01-29 Thread Jerome Daryl Coombs-Reyes

I was in the same situation (to cancel or not to cancel) not too long
ago. I ended up cancelling. Because my concious tends to be pathetically
guilty about such things, I had the same dilemma. I went as far as to
email each person who had bidded individually (pathetic, huh?)... But
anyway... here's what I learned:

In short, I would suggest a terse explanation. Unfortunately, it seems
that (though it seems like the right thing to do), the more information
you supply, the more you leave yourself open to criticism and
opinions being voiced. Besides, the top of your page will say something
like AUCTION HAS ENDED EARLY... the part where you get to add to the
description will be way at the bottom of the page... and I think you'd be
surprised at how many people dont even bother to scroll down once they see
that the auction is dead.

And will my name forever be mud?

Definitely not. I think that memories are incredibly short on eBay. What
matters (over time) is the feedback, and like you pointed out:

people (can't) post feedback unless they're the buyer.

Your post (and hence your conscious) already shows that you are not doing
such a thing maliciously, so in that respect I think you can
personally rest assured.

However, I will advise the following:
(I guess this is for future reference, since I just reread your post, and
noticed that you already ended the auction)...

Be CERTAIN that you are not underselling yourself. Sometimes you will be
surprised how much some people (perhaps in very remote, smaller
markets) will be willing to pay for an item when you may deem it
significantly less in value. Is 4 days early worth the potential of an
extra xx amount of dollars?

In my case, I was certain that the bids would not go higher than the
price given by the person who wanted me to end the auction. Why? (a) I
checked the history on eBay (completed items) on how much identical items
sold for previously. And (b) the price they gave was a couple of dollars
above the cost of buying it new on a few other websites (they needed the
item urgently)

Hope this helps.

This particular person (forgot the name already) sold first, THEN ended
the auction, versus the other way around... But vice versa or versa
vice, these two seem to be only 'technically' different. (ie, the result
is exactly the same). Anyhow, the question is, since eBay specifically
makes a provision for ending your auction early and selling to the current

Or perhaps your disgust is in reference to the (seemingly

Hi,
Does anybody know if any manufacturer makes an injet paper that's

Re: Why do you choose or stay in Pentax ?

2002-01-29 Thread Carlos Royo

Pentax has chosen to be faithful to their customers, and I have chosen
to stay with Pentax, being this one of the main reasons. These last few
days, one of my most used lenses is a 1975 SMC Pentax 85 mm. 1.8, on a
2001 MZ-S.
Besides, the lenses are fine, and both them and the camera bodies I own
have been reliable through the years.
They have worked well for me and I hope this will continue in future. I
also expect that sooner or later there will be a digital body on which I
can use my lenses, with the right specs for the right price. I know that
this won't happen overnight, but I am not in a hurry.

RE: FA 28-70/f4 AL why not F2.8?

2002-01-29 Thread Ed Mathews

All this discussion is based on assuming that the lens would open to
F2.8 to begin with, which may not be the case at all. Sure, you can see
the aperture mechanism reduce itself as you zoom toward the short end,
but how do you know it would go to F2.8? What if it only went to F3.5?
In that case, it certainly would make a lot more sense to keep it a
constant F4.0. Personally, I'd have a hard time believing that this
lens, with it's size and weight, could ever manage an F2.8.

Thanks,
Ed

HP Photosmart S20 (buy it?!)

2002-01-29 Thread Jerome Daryl Coombs-Reyes

Okay... so I've been paging through the PDML archives for about a week

concerning which scanner to buy (and theres a LOT of them!... thanks for
you past contributions). For the capability and price range, I've
decided on the Photosmart S20... Atleast for now.

From reading your opinions over time, the pros for this system and the
praise that it has received (even when you omit all of Pauls
advertisements... I mean... postings... concernings this unit) have
significantly outweighed any cons.

And to top it off, I 've just been offered a deal I (almost) can't refuse
(under 350 for a hopefully used-but-mint unit)...

Hence, this posting is somewhat of a last call... A plea for any

purchasing this scanner. Perhaps some of you have had developments
_since_ all of the scanner posts that I've read which have changed your
opinions about this or related products. Any such input would be
appreciated. Lastly, going thru with this particular deal is not a done
deal at all. Hence, your comments may be very helpful for future
considerations as well. Thanks in advance,

ps... I'm primarily looking for a slide scanner... and the added

 Frits,
The TC doesn't move focus without aid.
The simplest way is to let the Z-1 do the job for you, but you don't
have to focus on anything. If the AF goes hunting, the TC always ends

Re: HP Photosmart S20 (buy it?!)

2002-01-29 Thread Christian Skofteland

I love my older PhotoSmart. It has replaced the crappyscan(tm) that I used
to use. I scan only slides and negatives.

The only issue I have is scanning prints. It gives me awful lines down the
center when it scans prints of any size. I've cleaned it and calibrated it
but still those damn lines!

I have no issues with slides and negatives however.

Mine is an older SCSI version that was given to me free of charge new in box
because the previous owner was literally using it as a door stop.

The other issue that may or may not be a challenge is the driver/software
when using it in windows. It was sort of a chore to set it up (and I'm a
UNIX sys-admin!) but once everything was happy it was love at first scan.

Hope this helps
Christian

Re: Why do you choose or stay in Pentax ?

2002-01-29 Thread Familie Scheffler

My first Camera was an Exa Ia, when I joined a Foto AG in school (13 years
old). I thought of an Agfa non-SLR and my parents and I went off the store
with the Exa. After all an SLR! Seven years later I had the money to buy a
better camera: the MX. I went into the store thinking of Minolta and got out
with a Pentax. Never heard before. But was a nice little thing looking better
than Minolta. And I never regretted it!
Two years ago I sold the MX to my cousin whos MX made difficulties
transporting more than 20 pictures. At this time I had had my MX repaired by
Pentax in Hamburg -misfunction of the trigger- and they had changed the
bayonet, too (I didn't think it was necessary but they repaired all they could
find). It was somewhat heavy to change lenses then. And my cousin only has two
lenses and changes seldom so it doesn't matter. In the meantime I had bought
the MZ-5N and it feels better in my hand than the MX. And if I want the
feeling of metal I go back to my K1000 I chased for a low price in the
nineties as reserve.
And I never want to change because I am totally satisfied with Pentax using
old and new lenses how I want!

I'd go for it if it's close to $300.00
You can find new Canon and Minolta 2700 dpi film scanners for under $400.00
(of course they won't scan prints so there's a trade-off: they do have higher
resolution and probably a little batter Dmax than the HP).

2002-01-29 Thread Mike Johnston

So when I advise young photographers what to buy, I urge them to consider
defunct bayonet mounts such as Konica--yes, Konica. No one uses it, you say?
Exactly. World-class third-party lenses in Konica mount go begging for buyers.
And Konica itself made some excellent optics, such as their 85/1.8 and their
 f/1.8 pancake.

Those two lenses are both superb. The 85/1.8 was one of the first excellent
lenses I ever used. The pancake (which I still have around here somewhere)
has poor bokeh at close-focusing distances but just marvelous performance at
normal taking distances--it's almost hard to believe that a lens can be that
vivid and contrasty.

The 28/1.8 Hexanon is no slouch either.

With the 50mm lens, knowing how some things tend to be
more expensive over there it sounds like a decent deal
with a warranty. Also it offers ALOT more than the
MZ-50, like DOF, better lens compatability, faster AF,
more metering modes ( I'm still trying to learn the
ZOne system to use the spot meter ) auto bracketing (
my god send with slides ). And your getting one of the
sharpest lenses possible with it what more do you
want. OH it may seem harder to change some settings
but you'll appreciate it's interface once you learn
your way around it, you never have to take your eye
out of the finder to change anything ( ok film,
batteries and lenses )

Re: Why do you choose or stay in Pentax ?

2002-01-29 Thread Cotty

Why do I choose or stay with Pentax? Good question. Why indeed.

I suppose because I like the underdog.

I first used a Pentax (SP500) at art college. For those students without
their own cameras, there were half a dozen Zenits and a Spottie. We raced
for the Spottie, and I was that desperate NOT to have a Zenit, and the
single default Spottie was such a must have, that I bagged it every
time, even though the film door latch was a short length of tape. It was
nice to use and didn't chew the film up at the end of the roll like the
Russian contraptions.

After college, I saved up and bought a Practica where I experimented with
a 135mm lens. Later, I got A Fujica ST605N which I loved, but it still
didn't have the quality or the kudos of something like a Pentax. I
aspired to a Pentax, and when I could, I finally achieved my prize: a
brand new Pentax MX. Cost for the body only was a few pennies over £80
from Techno Cameras just outside Thames TV in the Euston Road in London,
1980. I was working by now, and could afford such luxuries (NOT!).

The MX was a different league altogether from the Practica and the
Fujica. It was beautiful, small, elegant, tasteful. It was real quality.
I was delighted.

Brand-wise, I had considered Canon and Nikon. There was a lad at college
who dressed in plaid jackets (we all wore T-shirts and jeans) and had
grotty glasses and a permanent dribble at the corners of his mouth. He
raved about Nikons. That was enough to put me off for life.

Canon, to me, seemed even more mainstream. They were sponsoring the 1980
(soccer) World Cup (if memory serves) and I shied from them for that
reason. Canons and Nikons were everywhere. I hated following trends, it
was so 'uninspiring'.

Pentax, however, seemed sleek, just the right amount of 'not as popular,
yet proper quality'. For this reason I might have considered Minolta,
except that I had fond memories of the Spotmatic, plus the recently
introduced MX beckoned. The size of it! Even in my huge mits, it was just
a delight to use. I knew I would have one from the day I first saw one.
To actually own one I seem to recall, well, I guess my colleagues thought
I'd been on the mushrooms. Permanent smile.

That's really it. From then on, no other brand came close, with one
notable exception: Mamiya. As my career progressed, so did my pay, and
the medium format bug caught me. Along came an RB67 with waist-level
finder and standard lens (90 mil Sekor? I can't remember). The cost in
1981 was horrendous: over £400. I had 2 MXs and 3 or 4 lenses by now. A
few years later, the RB67 had gone, and a SMC 15mm f3.5 had joined the
troupe in it's place, along with a 400mm.

Over the years, lens came and went, including (sadly) the 15 mil, and the
second MX drifted off. At one point I was down to the first MX and a 50
and 28. Until about 5 years ago when the bug hit again. The rest, as they
say, is history.

So why Pentax? Niche quality. Personal history. Not following the flock,
going off on my own (if there's a few following me, well hey: that's,
ahhh, cool. Baby ;-)

Thanks for the thread. Nice one.

Cotty

PS - the original MX, purchased as body only, plus a SMC 28mm 2.8 lens,
are still with me to this day, both retired. The MX has never been
serviced, and everything works fine, top shutter speeds obviously adrift
a bit, otherwise perfect. They sit oin my desk as an always available
touchy-feely monument. Sad, eh!

No, it isn't more difficult:) Not at all. Trust me - I've just

For me it has to be the value and durability. I was in the USAF stationed in South
Korea in the early 1980's when I finally saved up enough to buy a SLR. I looked at
all of them available at the BX and settled on a SuperProgram, SMC-A 28/2.8, and SMC-A
70-210/4. Price was certainly an issue then but I don't regret the decision at all -
probably one of the best I ever made.

I decided to go the AF route a couple of years ago because my family wanted to be
enabled. (They were a little intimidated with the SP.) I sold the SP body for more
than I purchased it for! I never has to do anything but replace batteries in that
body.

I'm now using a ZX-5n, SMC-FA 28-80/3.5-5.6, SMC-FA 80-320/4.5-5.6, Vivitar Series 1
AF 19-35/3.5-4.5, SMC-FA 50/1.4, Vivitar 100/3.5 Macro and a cheapo Phoenix ZBIF-92P
flash. This is a pretty sweet setup (I know some will argue the lens, but it works
for me - for now) which was put together at a reasonable price. I shudder to think
what a similar N rig would have cost.

I purchased the Vivitar lens based on recommendations and comments from the PDML. I
wouldn't have known about those lens and the bang for the buck they provide without
the PDML.

I did attend a N School day in November. I have to admit that Pentax has nothing like
that here in the States. I was astounded at the amount of information and quality of
instruction. I honestly believe that Pentax could easily increase both market share
and visibility if they could/would do something similar.

I must admit that part of the reason is the PDML. I've recently been tempted
by bother the Nikon FM3a and the N80. But if I got those I wouldn't really

Why do you choose or stay in Pentax? Why not N, C or M?

My answer is simple! I want the quality of Pentax lenses.

 How about you?

Well. I don't have such a great story about me and Pentax as I read here.
If I was given a Pentax camera by grandfather as Take was I would stick to
it forever specialy know that I have learned a lot of respect for him.
Daniel wrote about his lucky buy (because how you can call a situation when
there was no M in stock for him to buy?) and staying with the brand for 30
years - that's impressive!

Than as Emilio wrote: Maybe all we are different, original people??. I
just like to do something different than others or at least in a different
way. And since Pentax is not as popular in Poland as N, C, M are it was my
pick even before I've learned about it's quality. I guess I'm a bit
snobbish...

Gabor wrote: I like to mix old MF gear with the latest AF ones without any
unnecessary limitations. No other company offers this possibility. Also, SMC
is great. It definitely works. No question about that. Sad truth is that
I have to pay for it :-( Getting C FD lenses might be cheaper - at least in
an amateur range. But hey, I'm snobbish!

I guess, I went for Pentax because the fact that I could use the MF and AF
lenses interchangeably although I was a bit to optimistic about how cheap I
can get those MF ones. In communistic era Pentax wasn't officialy present on
Polish market so there isn't so many used lenses as I wish to be offered.
But I hope to get into ebay soon - I just have to solve a cheap way to send
payments - or maybe I don't wont to do it? I'm not having too much cash
allready... :-)
Than, what I really loved about new Pentax cameras was the desing that makes
them simple to use. Only playing with Russian SLR Zenit before Pentax I knew
how to take pictures right away! The mistery with my friends EOS 3 starten
with an uneasy to find on-off switch...

And now, I will stick to Pentax just to have the priviledge of being a part
of PDML :-)

Maciej

OT: Consumer psychology (was:Why do you choose or stay in Pentax ?)

2002-01-29 Thread Rfsindg

The psychology of brand loyalty is interesting.

Emperical studies have shown that when consumers are indifferent between two choices,
A B, and are forced to pick one, they will be happier with A if they chose A or
happier with B if they chose B. In short, the choice you MADE becomes the RIGHT
choice in your mind.

The other issue with brands is an information issue. I know and trust what this brand
name has offered in the past and it becomes a good way to navigate thru the myriad
choices in the marketplace.

Why Pentax?

2002-01-29 Thread Marc Schlotthauer

My father died when I was eight (1975), and some of the most vivid memories I
have are of him and his camera equipment - his beloved Pentax Spotmatic SP (which
will always be my favorite body, no matter what) and a variety of oddball screw
mount lenses.

I used to tag along with him when I was five or six, going down to the local
camera store to see all the hot equipment roll in. His buddy had opened the
first of what is now a chain of 14 stores in Oregon, and Dad used to fill in
for him behind the counter when he needed to run errands. Lots of laughs and
losing bills in Liar's Poker.

Dad left me his camera gear, and that is what I use (although I just added the
PZ-1p and 28-70/4...still feeling a bit guilty about it). His Spotmatic is very
rough around the edges, but I'll go down next month and drop $155 at the shop
he used to support for a CLA...I'll shed a tear or two when I get it back, imagining
the thrill he got from it in tip-top shape - our hands on the same body, playing
with the solid feel of his SMC Takumar 85/1.9, our eyes looking with wonder
and joy through the same viewfinder.

I'm a Pentax guy - just like Dad.

Over the weekend, I posted my first EBay auction. It's a highly
sought-after piece of professional audio recording gear. I could
have sold it at a good price with a Buy It Now, but I decided to
keep the ad up a week as a learning experience.

Well, a local buyer saw the ad and made me a sweet offer if I'd
cancel the ad. After reading the EBay rules, I saw that I can
cancel the ad by canceling all bids and posting an explanation.
Since I'll be out of work all February and here was money in the
hand with no long-distance risks, cons, or misunderstandings, my
 wife said Do it!

I just did it. We made the sale at a nearby shopping center.

Now I must break a lot of hopeful hearts and look like a heel by
killng the auction four days early. I don't want to lie; I want
to be perfectly straightforward about why I ended the auction.
Can someone give me advice on what to write, and how? Should I
explain my financial situation, grovel, and apologize? Or just
write something terse, like, sold the unit to a local high bidder?

And will my name forever be mud? I don't think people can post
feedback unless they're the buyer, right?

EBay makes it easy by puting this red icon next to the items.

So the point is, that as a seller, you don't necessarily get the benefit
of bigger crowd by dragging it on longer.

If a seller is content to sell at a price, then (if I were him) I'd use
that as buy-it-now price, and let the auction takes its course if it
doesn't sell that way. In fact, I tend to use a low buy-it-now price,

The eBay Follies

Be CERTAIN that you are not underselling yourself. Sometimes you will be
surprised how much some people (perhaps in very remote, smaller
markets) will be willing to pay for an item when you may deem it
 significantly less in value.

I once sold a bunch of classical LP records. I had paid $4.50 to $8.50 for
each of them, and was hoping to get $30.00 each, which, if Buy It Now had
existed at that time, probably would have been my BIN price.

As it happened, more than sixteen of the records broke $100 and the highest
sold for $262.00. A number of others sold for $30-$80.

Don't underestimate eBay buyers' willingness to spend their money!

 SACRILEGE!!!

And at the very least, he should be wearing safety goggles.

Yellowed lenses are certainly still fine for black-and-white. One shouldn't
shoot color film through this lens anyway.

Be CERTAIN that you are not underselling yourself. Sometimes you will be

 extra xx amount of dollars?

I for one almost never look at anything other than buy-it-now -- no
time to wait out an auction and don't want to bid max in the beginning.
EBay makes it easy by puting this red icon next to the items.

So the point is, that as a seller, you don't necessarily get the benefit
of bigger crowd by dragging it on longer.

EBay is about to start charging extra to sellers for Buy It Now so we'll
likely be seeing a lot fewer BIN auctions in the future :(

A flashy problem

2002-01-29 Thread Jon Hope

Howdy people

A friend wants me to photograph bullets hitting various targets to
see what happens to the bullets (and the targets) when they are hit.

We think we can trigger a flash by way of a velocity meter (his rifle
club has the means to measure the speed of bullets), so we think we
can tap into the circuitry to trigger a flash.

What I need some help on is which flash to use, and what I need to do
to trigger the flash.

I thought about doing this in very low light, so I can leave the
shutter open and capture the image when the flash fires.

Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

Cheers

Re: Why do you choose or stay in Pentax ?

2002-01-29 Thread Dan Scott

Wanted to replace our missing point and shoot with something suitable for
macros as well as snapshots and family photos. Of the companies whose
lenses I liked, one had a body whose design I liked.

Since then, neither N, C, nor M have released products that make me want to
switch or add their gear to what Pentax i already have.

Then, there is the PDML to consider, as well...

Why do you choose or stay in Pentax? Why not N, C or M?

My answer is simple! I want the quality of Pentax lenses.

How about you?

RE: Double sided Inkjet paper?

2002-01-29 Thread John Coyle

Celcast double-sided coated paper, Product Code 70191, is available in
Australia, don't know about the rest of the world. It's only 95gsm, however,
so it would be best suited as inserts into a report rather than as stand-alone
material, I think.
