Velvia is not my cup of tea as the colours are very strong and it is pretty high in contrast. I would recommend taking care with the polariser. I don't use them often but they can be useful at times. They make a good ND filter if you're desperate :) I rarely shoot print film in medium format, but Reala is definitely a wonderful film for MF and I'm not surprised about your good impression of it. I have a lovely 30x40 framed print of the Endeavour replica hanging on the lounge wall at home (living room for Americans). It was taken off a 6x7 Reala neg. After trying out a couple of rolls of Agfa Portrait 160 in 35mm last year I'm keen to try it in 6x7. Believe it or not I quite liked it as a landscaping film. BH lists two different types of film for most of the brand/specification. One is marked USA and another Imported. The price difference is quite a lot, especially for print films. JDCR Smacking self in head I use rechargeables for my cd player and havent a JDCR clue why I never thought to do the same for my camera equipment!!! One JDCR problem is that after a while, it seems that the life (or rather, JDCR turn-around time) on my rechargeables has diminished significantly; and JDCR was already significantly shorter than nonrechargeables to begin with... JDCR However! My rechargeables are cheap ones. Now that I think about it, i Jerome, it's not your rechargables being cheap - most of the high-ends are made by same chinese factory as the cheaper ones... GP is a big chinese producer of rechargables. What counts most is the *charger*. Most chargers are stupid, overcharging the batteries thus diminishing their life, especially cheap built-in chargers like in CD players and mobile phones. B+H weird shipping charges
Hi all, Just out of curiosity I had a look at the FA*400/5.6 on B+H. I clicked on the shipping info and got two quotes; one for the UK and one for NZ. To have it shipped across the pond to the UK is $72.50, or to send it all the way to NZ costs $70.75. Both via Fedex Priority. That's just a little bit confusing. VAT/GST and duties are not included as they work out to more than the shipping cost. Something else that suprised me is that the A-400/5.6 is still available, and is about $200 more expensive than the FA. I hope I can find the FA lens at a good price in London, then I can just throw it in my luggage. My dream is to find both this lens and the FA*200/2.8 together secondhand at a price I can afford :) Cheers, - Dave in sunny Bognor - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Taka, you seem to have the same digicam as mine. The Minolta D7. It's a power hog. I'm using the Rayovac myself, and find them quite good. I've relegated my 1500 RS batts for the duty of powering the flash. Since my remotes and Palm can run for months on 2 batts, I usually keep a stack of cheap AAA alkalines on hand. Last deal was for 16 Maxell AAA's for $7 CDN. For carrying my AA's, I bought cheap RS 4 AA holders. I drilled out the rivets holding the contacts, and marked one end with a + sign. When they are charged, I slip them in with the tip towards the + sign. When depleted, they go in reversed. Now, if they said the digital is more of a yuppy status symbol than an SLR, I would have no problem with that. Hi Tom, Interesting question -- I wonder about that myself. (Yeah, I know you were being facetious, but you bring up a good point worth serious consideration.) I'm thinking in terms of US dollars and the US market here, but it probably applies in other markets and currencies as well. With so many decent PS digital cameras now in the $400-to-$600 range, it wouldn't surprise me if consumers are buying more digitals than they are buying $300-to-$450 conventional SLR packages. And I'll bet that's more in terms of actual number of cameras sold, rather than just more in terms of sales dollars. Is it possible that total sales ~dollars~ spent per year on digital cameras now exceeds total sales ~dollars~ spent per year on disposable film cameras? Hmmm I don't know about that one -- it might very well be getting ~near~ that point. Perhaps it's even exceeding that point in some markets. After all, you'd have to sell only one $600 digital to equal the sales volume of 100 $6 disposables. However, I (like you) would really be amazed if the actual ~number~ of digital cameras sold per year now exceeds the ~number~ of disposable film cameras sold per year. I just can't see that ever happening, for the simple reason that a consumer of a disposable camera -- by definition -- throws the camera away when he/she is done using it, but the consumer of a digital camera presumably buys a camera once and only once. (Or maybe once every few years.) Eventually, you would think that the market for digital cameras would reach saturation, and sales would level off to a steady -- and quite possibly very low -- value. I don't think the corporate behemoths -- Kodak, HP, Olympus, etc. -- will ever make a decent profit selling digital cameras. I think they'll continue to willingly succumb to price erosion in order to meet their sales growth targets, and they'll exit the camera manufacturing business once the market reaches saturation. The real profits in digital, I believe, will be in ink and paper -- just as the real profits in conventional silver halide photography have been in film. And as long as there is a large consumer segment for which even a $50 digicam is out of reach, I think there will continue to be a profitable market for disposable film cameras for a long time to come. Which hopefully means a supply of reasonably inexpensive conventional film for a long time to come. I hope ;-) Bill Peifer Rochester, NY - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: Do zooms teach visual discipline? Was: Advice Needed For Student
Bill you obviously feel strongly about this. Can you learn better with a 50mm? Maybe. I don't see why? Maybe the argument is that you can learn to see better with a prime lens rather than a zoom. I'm not sure about that either. I know the old school of thought certainly pushes this concept. But things have changed. I think the best way to study light is to use your eyes. You don't even need a camera or a lens. It's not worth worrying about. Some Students will benefit from the simplicity of a 50 mm lens. Others will flourish with the versatility of a zoom lens. There's no easy answers here. Vic In a message dated 5/14/02 1:07:24 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: The whole friggin point isn't about whether the zoom is a better compositional tool or not. It's not about composition at all. It's about learning how to see what light does when it hits an object, how that gets translated into an image. This is best learned with a 50mm lens (if we are using the 35mm format as an example). It matches (more or less) the field of view of the human eye, and consequently, produces a picture with a perspective we can immediately relate to. The idea is to learn one thing at a time, and learn it well. First, learn what light does, that controls everything else. Composition is secondary to this, as compositional needs will change depending on the angle of light hitting the object. Not my fault a bunch of idiots think this is bullshit. People that have this figured out are better photographers. Look back at the subject line. The word Student should say something about where I am coming from. You can learn what I am talking about with any lens, it doesn't matter if you use a zoom, or a friggin fisheye. You will learn it faster, and better with a standard focal length prime lens, one that doesn't allow you to cheat, just because you want the instant gratification of easy composition. Other possibilities: Most likely the limited lenses are made in small batches. Originally the lenses were made to match the silver MZ-5/MZ-3 series, which sold in large quantities. As the MZ-S is more 'pro' it was launched in black. What should Pentax do with the stock of silver limited lenses left? I'm sure Pentax is not making a lot of money on the limited lenses. They are sold in small quantities and need exceptional attention to quality. It is really not easy. The rising prices of the limited lenses as they emerge reflects this 437731 Nevertheless I'm keenly waiting for the 'FA 17/2.8 AL limited' to hit the market. Mark, you asked: Is it OK to use NMH rechargeables in battery grips? Taken from a review of the MZ-S at the following site: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2001_reviews/pentax_mzs_pg3.html ...Since the BG-10 is a battery pack, let's talk about the batteries for a moment. It allows you to use the common AA type of alkaline or NiMH rechargeable cells instead of the two CR-2 lithium cells in the camera... Perhaps more importantly, an early morning phone call to Pentax tech support has confirmed these claims. In short, I'm excited. Quite possibly one less recurring expense to deal with. jerome - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions. Re: Do zooms teach visual discipline? Was: Advice Needed For Student
This thread made me recall a couple of things I heard over the years. One was the book by cancer survivor and Tour de France winner, Lance Armstrong, It's Not About The Bike. The other was from a cattleman's field day many years ago in Greeley, Colorado. The subject was quality in beef cattle. Someone asked if there was any particular breed of cattle that had more quality. One buyer replied that cattle came in many different colors, but green money has a certain quality about it. You can make money with any kind of cattle, he concluded. Now, to paraphrase Lance Armstrong, it's not about the lens. You can make pictures with any kind of lens, or camera, or film. And as the cattle buyer said, pictures have a certain quality about them and you can make pictures with any kind of equipment. What seperates Ansel Adams from the rest of us was his ability to see...to visualize. I think you could give Ansel Adams any combination of camera, film and processing chemicals and he would come up with an Ansel Adams picture. It was Adam's ability to take an ordinary scene and turn it into a work of art that made him special not his equipment. I still stand by the old axiom that photography is simple...the only difficult part is keeping it simple. The only important thing for a photographer to learn is how to paint with light and to reproduce what he sees in his mind. Ken On Tuesday 14 May 2002 01:05 am, William Robb wrote: The whole friggin point isn't about whether the zoom is a better compositional tool or not. -- Kenneth Archer, San Antonio, Texas [EMAIL PROTECTED] - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: Lens and body color options
I just found the response I got from the Japan headquarters when I asked them directly last autumn. I think they are really doing their best. If we are interested in the limited lenses (and buy more), the variety will increase (in numbers of different limited lenses available, as well as in colour variations). I guess the black batch was a market test in Japan. I'm not even sure if Pentax is still producing black lenses. Most likely they are just selling off the batch they produced in the past. That explains why they do not offer black limiteds to the world market. Lenses -like books- are produced in batches. A*lenses for example apparently are no longer produced for some years now, nevertheless last stocks are (still) available (A 15/3.5, A 16 fish-eye, A 50/1.2). To keep the black limited lenses on the shelves in Japan for a reasonable long time [to prevent consumers from getting disgrunted] they have to stretch their stock. The quantity of black lenses produced are probably enough to last in Japan for a few years, but would probably have gone within a few weeks if offered world wide. They have to be sure that it is worth setting up a new production batch of black limited lenses. Subject: RE: 43mm 77mm in Black Thank you for your contacting us again. However, we have to send you the same answer. We do not have plan to launch the black colour model for overseas market. We appreciate your suggestion. But we can not afford to do so. To launch a product, there is quantity requirement to run production at factory. In case of 43mm 77mm, it is very difficult to satisfy the condition. Small production would cost us a lot and eventually it will affect retail price, which consumer will not accept. Unfortunately the total production volume for these lenses (Silver and Black) is not so big. Therefore we decided to concentrate to Silver model. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. For people who really want a black limited to match their black MZ-S, the 'leak' out of Japan via our friend in Brighton is a possibility: http://www.camera-direct.com/other.asp The more lenses leak, the more Pentax might feel that there really is a market. Re: Lens and body color options
While everyone is guessing at the nature of Pentax head office thinking, I'll add my wild speculation. I figure that the rest-of-the-world availability of body and lens finishes is driven by what's hot and what's not in Japan. Limited lenses were all chrome in the beginning so the early adopters in Japan had their kit of chrome Limiteds which they could only match to a mid-line MZ series camera or a very spendy limited edition chrome LX, until the MZ-S appeared. Now they are gobbling up all the chrome MZ-S bodies Pentax can make, with nothing to spare for export. When the black Limiteds appeared the home market once again has demanded as many as the factory can churn out to satisfy the Japanese buyers who prefer the classic black lens of the '60s, '70s, '80s and '90s, rather than the all chrome look of the '50s and before. The rest-of -the-world will get its chance to buy a chrome MZ-S or a black Limited when Japan has had its fill of them. IM(highly speculative)O. Re: Tokina 150-500 f5.6 ATX
Hello To All, Here are my thoughts on my new lens. Of course it's built like a tank which is normal for Tokina 's ATX line. I was surprised that it has a built in lens hood! Very Nice indeed. I finally got a chance to do some testing of it's optical performance. I would say that wide open at 500mm, it's not as sharp as my Tokina 100-300 f4 ATX lens at 300mm f4, but if you stop it down to f8 it's alot better and f11 is very sharp. So, I'm quite pleased with it and it's not as heavy as I expected it to be. It's ONLY 4.8 pounds, that's all. But seriously, it balances quite well with my PZ1p. It's one of the largest/longest telephoto zooms you can still handhold with faster films. So, bottom line, I'm quite happy with it, It's no Pentax 600mm 5.6, but then again, I didn't empty all the bank accounts either to buy it. A Felow Pentaxian, Ryan LAUNCH - Your Yahoo! Re: 31mm Ltd. vs. FA 35 f2
Based on Popular Photography tests, they are comparably sharp except wide open, where the 31 is definitely better. As Pål mentioned, there are other factors to consider, such as bokeh and overall quality. I have the 31 and am very pleased with it. BTW, the 31 is actually a 32 while the 35 is really a 34. Re: Quasi OT: An incredible experience plus photography
Those probably were africanized bees. A bee-scientist from USDA gave a lecture on the africanized bees at my university two years ago. Basically, just about all bees south of the Mason-Dixon line are africanized. Because the bees are from a hot climate, they don't need to stockpile honey for the winter. This means a lower yeild for beekeepers and no Africanized bees in colder parts of the US. Africanized bees are more disease resistant. I can't remember the name of it, but according to the USDA guy, almost all bees in the US had been wiped out by a bee-disease. The Africanized bees, still the same species of bee, were not affected. What's really interesting is that our normal honey bees, African bees, and European bees are all the same species of bee. What is perceived as African bees taking over from docile honey bees is really African bee genes moving through an existing bee population. Africanized bees are more aggressive, but like a lot of animals they only get that way when harrassed. I spent two hot semesters playing tennis in deep South Texas, sharing the courts with a colony of bees. Nobody was stung. Lecture over. Class dismissed. Joe Tainter, send up some of those bee shots when you can. That was a great opportunity to watch a colony in action. LAUNCH - Your Yahoo! On my way out from the exhibition, I bought Frans Lanting's book Eye to Eye. Fascinating book, but I still can't decide if his animal pictures are portraits in Leif Preus' definition. On one hand, it's a long shot to claim to know something about the soul of any beast. On the other hand, Lanting's technique is often to study and mimick animal behavoiur so carefully that he can make the animals cooperate by simply ignoring his presence and go on with their normal business. Re: PUG - Definition of Portrait?
Frankly, I think a portrait goes a little deeper than that. Elliott Erwitt's famous portrait of Pablo Casals, taken without the maestro present, is an example that comes to mind. In this photograph there is no likeness of Casals, yet by photographing his cello and bow, resting on a chair in the room in which Casals often played, and by taking full advantage of light and shadow, we are able to see and feel the context in which Casals exists, and thereby get some sense of the man. Is this any less of a portrait than a head-and-shoulders shot of the great cellist. The point of a portrait is, I think, to show us something about the person, to reach beyond a reproduction of a face or form, and allow the viewer to get some sense of the subject. The famous photo of a Texas death row inmate's hands through the bars of his cell reflects more about the man behind the bars, his environment and condition, than might have been captured with a more traditional portrait. Does one really need to see a likeness of a person in order to know something about that person? Newman and Sieff Books (was: Re: PUG - Definition of Portrait?)
The Norwegian Museum of Photography opened a portraits exhibition on May 5th. Featuring 25 Arnold Newman portraits, among many others. Jostein, cool! I just bought my second Arnold Newman book, entitled appropriately enough: 'Arnold Newman' by Taschen, 2000 (ISBN 3-8228-7193-1), a HUGE book with 274 pages of lovely monochrome and colour reproduction. It features a complete retrospective of his work from across the years. One of my heroes. I'd love to go to an exhibition of his. As an aside, my SO went to Paris on the train with a girlfriend for 4 days (well, you have to let them out now and again...) and she brought me a fantastic present. I knew that my all time greatest photo-hero, Jeanloup Sieff (pronounced Seff, short 'a') had a book out (posthumously, he sadly died in 1999), but it hasn't been translated into English, and so is only available in France. I didn't ask my SO to look for it, because she was there to do galleries and les musees, so I thought it unfair to have her trudging about looking for something she might not find. Alas, my luck was in: on her return, she presented me with a brand new copy! Called 'Faites Comme si Je n'Etais pas La' (trans: 'Make as if I'm not here' - M. Sieff's favourite assurance to sitters), it is a lovely retrospective, complete with recounts by the author on his encounters with many and varied sitters over the years. Highly recommended. ISBN 2-7324-2518-4 by Editions de La Martiniere (2000). Amazon France have it: http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/2732425184/qid%3D1010360395/171-67256 80-9621052 Meanwhile, hopefully it will make it to other languages. His work is brilliant. Re: PUG - Definition of Portrait?
Does one really need to see a likeness of a person in order to know something about that person? I don't believe so. Your recounting of the cellist scenario illustrates this point well. However, to be pedantic, the definition (in internationally accepted terms) is as previously stated. It's how we each individually (and also as a group) interpret that definition that forms our opinions in the manner that we do. A photograph of a bow and a cello may well be described as a portrait, and there will be those that understand this, and those that don't. A traditionalist will perhaps challenge the example, offering only that there is no person present in the image, and so (by accepted standard definition) cannot be a portrait. Those of us with perhaps a wider, lateral rather than literal expectation of the definition (in fact *any* definition) will interpret accordingly, and react accordingly. IMO, there is no right and no wrong human interpretation of what a portrait is, or is not. There is only an internationally accepted lingual standard that happens to say that the likeness of a person or animal needs to be present in the image for it to be called a portrait. It's all a load of bollocks anyway. Rules are there to be broken. I tend to sit with the traditionalists, but like most people, I love the renegade. Doubtless we'll cheer the shot of the bow and the cello, if it appears, in any guise. I was playing local tour guide to overseas visitors to Sydney last week and what I observed was that by far the majority of snaps being take by tourist were on digital cameras followed in popularity by video cam user and then a handful of SLR users (a good mix of old and new, saw a Super A in use at the zoo). So it's of no surprise to me, many of the smaller digicams were being worn by their owners slung on a neck cord or wrist strap. Fortunately your not likely to get mugged for a camera in Sydneys popular tourist areas. Re: Anybody interested in getting the Pentax poster?
on 05/03/02 20:52, Eduardo shared with me: I would like one and I would gladly pay the extra shipping to get it unfolded. I too would enjoy having such a poster, Dario. Rolled, not folded. You would find it a lot less expensive to either have your printer pack and dropship the needed quantity to a US distributor, preferably a PDML member with easy acces to the time and facility to repack and reship the poster within North America. Alternatively, if your printer has any ties with a US of A or Canadian Print shop, the file could be sent here and printed here. If the finances balanced out, that is. If you'd send me your address, Dario, I would like to favor you (or the current treasurer) with a check for the renewal of my AOHC membership. OT: Re: Send Mz-S to Repair
- Original Message - From: Emilio Puga Subject: RE: Send Mz-S to Repair I think nothing for a Malasian Company, you know how well they pay their people??¿¿. At the risk of offending (like that ever bothers me), this is a pretty specious statement. Here in North America, and I include Canada in this as well, and I expect the rest of the western world, there is a pretty vast number of people who are extraordinarily underpaid. I speak specifically of people in the retail and service sector. These are people who get worked the hardest, get to suffer the abuse of disgruntled people over situations they have little or no control over, and have little or no job security. Anyone who plays off one store against another, or goes to a mail order rather than a local business so they can save a few dollars is promoting this, and it spreads from the frontline person right back to the people who produce the raw materials to make whatever you are buying. If we practice this sort of sweatshop capitalism in the western world, why would you hold a higher standard for a developing nation as the CBC so cutely calls countries that don't have the economic advantages of North American or other Western nations. If we don't buy from countries like Malaysia, who are we really hurting? Are we hurting corpoations and their boards of directors or are we hurting the very workers whose plight we are sympathetic towards? If you are really concerned about the state of workers affairs in Malaysia, I suggest you would be better advised to buy the Malaysian made product, to help out the workers there as best you can now, and then lobby your government to put pressure on the Malaysian government to pass some worker protecion laws. Just remember, though, the reason Japanese companies go to developing countries for labour is because we want cheap products here in the west. We are the problem, not the Malaysian companies.
