 Brad,

Our 'phone industry was deregulated about a decade ago, before that it was
a
monopoly. There are only two 'phone companies (Telstra Optus) that have
lines right into households, the rest buy line-time off the big two and
onsell it, or are long-distance providers only. Those two are affiliated
with the only two hard-wired cable TV companies (Foxtel with Telstra, and
Optus under it's own name), and are the only source of infrastructure for
dsl or cable internet, 'though again other smaller companies have their
own
servers and onsell the line time.

Don't worry too much about your language. If you swear on-list you'll get
enough flak from elsewhere for my comments to be redundant, so I won't
bother. If you swear privately I don't mind so long as it's not aimed at
me. Even then I'd probably tell you about it before anyone else. If
someone is trying to get you TOSsed by you ISP I don't know of it and it
hasn't shown up on-list in my parts yet. Check to see if that mail went
to
you or the whole list (see the final paragraph)

William was a special case. His patronising, holier-than-thou facade
slipped and showed him up as a hypocrite. I hate that.

BTW the list is broken again, you need to insert PDML as the adressee when
you reply to a post, otherwise it goes to the sender only.

 Regards,
 Anthony Farr

threatening someone is worse than swearing on the board! Before this

you wrote another one to me telling me to keep my opinions to myself,
 simply
because you did not agree with them. Of course it was ok for you to
post

answer?
Please all valid questions I hope you can all answer, especially the
'Why
did I bother with the apology?'

Can a few of you send this to Cotty or the board again so Cotty can read
 it?
I really don't know why he hates me for not wanting to hear 100
times
the same thing about a DSLR or the fact I don't see one coming or don't
 want
one. Sure I can ask to stop with the DSLR stuff can't it? It's what I
think, it's an opinion, and of course, the biggest thing is no one is
 forced
  to do what I say.

Man, I hate to send these messages time after time after time. Does the
group want to focus on me despite what I say? Do I keep the kid who
 swears
loudly in class inside and miss recesses for that day? I fit it
fitting.
Do I want them writing the WHOLE dictionary as punishment, instead of
writing out 3 pages of the letter L in the dictionary? No, 3 pages of L
is
 a
lot and a fitting punishment. Do I request suspension for the child

2002-10-15 Thread frank theriault

I got back from a long weekend out of town last night to over 500 e-mails! Of
course, the vast majority of them were pdml.

Unfortunately, most of them were useless garbage: He said this!, I already
apologized!, I'm complaining to his ISP!, etc, etc., back and forth, forth and
back.

WAAA! (that's supposed to represent the sound of an infant crying
g).

Unfortunately, I really didn't have time to sift throught the crap and read
anything worthwhile.

What's up lately? A weekend with the list down not enough for everyone to calm
down after Photokina, or did that just get everyone riled up even more?

I don't wish to point any fingers, but it does seem to me that a small number of
us are dominating the list with time-wasting drivel to satisfy their inflated
egos. Believe me, you're not that important!

Hopefully this will all blow over (as it usually does), and we can get back to
talking about Pentax and photography, and stop the sniping and back-stabbing.

Okay, everybody take a deep breath, have a
beer/valium/prozac/whatever-substance-makes-you relax/meditate/do yoga -
whatever. There now: feel better? Good, let's talk cameras...

Ladies and gentlemen,

I have had it. Brad you were wrong with what you did and I accept your

ignore other emails (not this one) concerning this topic.

For the rest of you (and believe me I love you all) if you cannot accept
his apology, please take it up with Brad off the list or filter him out
or whatever, I don't think the list really cares what you do. And keep
sending all the informative emails that have helped me so much during

Thank you for your understanding

My SO was (*finally*) sorting out her mess, er room, today, and came
across a fairly comprehensive Pentax price list. There is no date on it -
so, like countless 'What Was The Year' hours on music radio around the
world, by looking at the price list (at the URL below), What Was The
Year? Hint: the list is reproduced in full, 2 sides of an A4 sheet, and
(presumably) contains all the gear that was available at the time of
printing. Note no MX, and the only autofocus cameras were the SFXn and
SF7...

Have a look:

Seriously, I don't know the answer - I'm curious.

28mm f2.8 FA for Available Light Shots?

2002-10-15 Thread Brian Kauffmann

Hello All,

I just purchased a 28mm f2.8 FA lens, thinking it would be good for low
light photos. However, it seems to have a lot of light loss in the
corners at f2.8 and f4. It would seem to defeat my purpose of available
light photography if I have to set it to f5.6 or so. Is this expected
with this lens?

Is the 35mm f2 FA vignetting any better? That had been my second
choice, and maybe now the first.

I have a 50mm f1.7 FA, but was hoping for something wider in low light.
Then again, maybe this is the chance for the 43mm f1.9.

Thanks for your help.

2002-10-15 Thread Pentxuser

I wrote earlier saying that you should buy one only if you can find one at a
good price. The FB1/FD1 combination is pretty good. On the weekend, however,
I had the opportunity to shoot in a studio setting photographing still lifes,
extreme closeups of glass, etc. The FE1 was the finder of choice and it was
truly a pleasure to use. So I am revising my suggestion to -- go out there
and hunt one down and grab it if you can find it. They are not easy to find
so if you know where one is, go for it...

Brian,

That's a common attribute of wide lenses, your lens is typical. Most
available light situations should mask the problem, the more picture
elements there are the smaller the problem will be. Just beware of shooting
landscapes with clear blue skies at wide apertures. Of course copy-work
isn't recommended ;-)

Wasn't there someone who worked at a Wal Mart on the list?
I have a question about the Photo CDs they offer. The

 the Fuji Frontier 390.

There are too many ways of doing this now. The Fronteir may be
able to burn the CD, but the website doesn't give that
information. Our newer Noritsu machines will make the CD from
the same file it uses to print the picture.
There are also stand alone units that will make CD's. They come
in two flavours, the cheap and cheerful picture CD, which is
made from the prints, and the better quality Photo CD, or
whatever the Fuji equivalent is.
Why don't you ask them how they are sourcing the files for their
CDs?

Anyone who knows these things could please mail me off-list.

Nah, you just can't keep anything offlist these days.

it all out, its his tab for film and processing..
 I've never even been to
a baptism, I have no idea what goes on.

I go to an Evangelical-type church so the baptism was
the whole-body dunk in a pool. I don't have my Bible
in front of me but the verse goes He that believes
and is baptised shall be saved. He that does not
believe [is condemned]. That's not exact but it's
pretty close. There are some denominations that feel
that if you're never baptised it's hellfire and
brimstone for you. However, the emphasis in the
scriptures is on belief, not on getting wet. Baptism
is an outward sign of your belief and symbolic of
Christ's death and resurrection (going under the
water, coming out of the water.) This links it to
washing away or dying to the old, sinful nature of
mankind. It also stems in part from many ceremonial
cleansings in Judaism. The very early church was
largely Jewish. In fact somewhere the apostle Paul
writes that he is baptised into Christ or something
like that. Along with Holy Communion, it's one of the
few Christain rituals laid down in the New Testament,
but again, the primary emphasis is still on belief.

I was baptised in a Methodist church in San Marcos,
TX, which is a really photogenic little college town
in its own right. The church itself is a huge white
thing about two blocks off the town square and was
established in the 19th century by circuit riders
(preachers on horseback). Actually, it wasn't in the
church but in the San Marcos River. Beautiful but
cold. Some Methodist churches just put a handful of
water on your head. Not as dramatic but to the same
end.

Plus, I guess its technically not a baptism, but a
 christening, I just
can't pronounce christening, I'll keep referring
 to it as baptism.

I think a christening is what they do with babies when
they give the child a Christian name. I think.

Of course, I'd still have to pick up an inkjet
 printer, and I decided last
night that I now, in fact, loathe my flatbed
 scanner.

Hmm, yesterday I saw a flyer for CompUSA that was
advertising several film scanners for less than $300.
Don't remember the models or brands.

You've just earned big points with the word
 minimalist, which I so
 totally live for.

Ooh, do I get a cookie? :) Thanks, I did a lot of
fine arts reviews for my college paper so I had to
whip out the big art words on occasion.

I can't imagine not having a fall, its one of the
 only perks of living in
 the north east..

And what a perk! Our seasons here are more tropical.
Summer lasts from about March through September. The
rest of the year is really mild. I think last year we
had a total of 30 hours freezing temperatures spread
out over January and February. Mainly it's just wet
season and dry season. Now it's the wet season and
starting to cool off. Still, it has advantages.
Where else in the continental US can you go to the
beach in December? :)

Actually if you look carefully at the second photo
the flash looks like a Dalek
 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/doctorwho/gallery/dalek/)
 bearing down on the poor
 little Kangasquirrel :-)

This just proves that Minolta is evil. What with
their Dalek-flashes terrorizing the peaceful
Kangasquirrels of Finland. Where's the Doctor?

Doctor Whooo-oo, HEY!

Going to a football game Friday, so I gotta rehearse.

How do you think about DOF in the artistic sense and how does that

I like shallow DOF. Especially in my macros. It helps to isolate my
subject and give a quasi-3rd dimension to my pictures. Except most of my
landscapes where I tend to make everything look sharp.

I wouldn't buy a camera without a DOF preview. It can be a bit
challenging to get exactly the right DOF (one reason why I use SLRs over
rangefinders)...

Are you still carrying on Vic? You would be wise to practice what you

You're always apologizing for something. Hey, I have an idea, think before
 you type.

I'd

really like someone to actually tell me on the board. Seems no one has
read

the apologies 10^2 I have posted or other peoples similar response, as I
am

still getting mailings about it. Why repeat it?

Bob, you have just taken things too far. At least I apologized for my
words. The rest is wasted. But don't get too hopeful, I like the PDML
and plan on being here for a long long time. With valid contributions of
course.

While this fellow was posting this to the list, he was sending the
attached
email to me. He is who he is. His spots won't change. We're just going to
have to endure him for a while just as we had to endure The Who and
 Mafud.
