Coverage does usually not have anything to do with ISO or f-stops. The coverage you descibe here is not, as it is commom practice, the measure of the side of the rectangular square of light, that the flash will make on, let's say, a wall. Coverage usually describe an angle of view or a focal length (35 mm equiv.), meaning what you get in the viewfinder. Guide number means aperture at the distance of 1 foot at ISO 100. For this flash the guidenumber is 18. Guidenumber 18 will at 100 ISO give f 18 at one foot and appr. f 8 at 2 feet, appr. f 4 at 4 feet - or f 32-45 at 0.5 foot (15 cm). I'm not shure this applies the same way to a macro flash, as it does to ordenary flashes, though. I guess in this case it (coverage) referes to the maximum distance to the subject. 98 cm is almost 3 feet. Guidenumber 18 should be just about sufficient/enough power to give you f 5.6 at a three feet distance (as it gives you a little more than f 4 at 4 feet= 124 cm (more because my table is derived from GN 16). What you do in practice is this: Use A-setting to automatically adjust light for the aperture set at the camera (if there are more than one to choose from). Don't go beyond 3 feet distance to subject, as you do not want aperture larger than f 5.6 for macros anyway. Otherwise use manual setting and a aperture/distance table, like the one described above. I wouldn't shoot macros at less than f 8. istD for $799? A and M photo world?
Hi gang As my goal of obtaining a istD draws closer to reality, I did some web searching for prices. A place called A M Photo World has the body listed at $799 (US retailer). I tried to go through the entire order process up to the very end where it says click here to finalize to see if there were any surprises in store, but other than a higher than average shipping cost ($40) ; and they claimed it was in stock but since it is $200 less than any other retailer, I still feel funny about it-- like maybe it would show up with no battery or something like that. Has anyone paid this amount or less lately? What about this retailer? Anyone else have dealings with them before? It just feels fishy-- Greetings from CajunLand USA South Louisiana Sid Barras

From: Bruce Dayton [EMAIL PROTECTED] Boy, I have to agree with Shel here. My first look at the photo was very ho-hum. Just didn't see anything in it. This crop that Shel proposes really changes it into something for me. Now I really do see the relationship. Is that what you were going for Mark? Well, there were something that y'all might have missed and it was probably due to the scan and having to view the pic on a screen. I rescanned the slide with Shel's crop which I definitely like (thanks Shel!). Take a look at the kid's hair and pay attention to the color (hint: it's painted green on top). So I was going for the relationship between he and his mother but wanted to play with the juxtaposition of his hair color and her bracelet. I resubmitted the photo with some changes. Maybe they help. http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=2377665size=lg I like Shel's BW conversion as well. I'm gonna think about whether I want to print it as a BW and let the relationship stand on its own or keep the green hair and deal with the color elements in the background. Thanks! Mark

My film choices are simply to use the ever reliable Fuji Reala (iso 100) or the Fujichrome Velvia (iso 50). I will be using some Fuji ACROS Neopan 100 for the black and white stuff. I have never used the Velvia with the 6x7, nor have I used it indoors in 35mm format. How does the Velvia perform with flashes? Any under exposure problems? How does it handle contrasty situations? Marnie aka Doe Learned it as a photographer for the college campus newspaper a few years ago (versions 3 and 4, I think, just to illustrate the range) and never took a formal class although I was being taught in a college newsroom. If that makes sense as written. There was a class in existence at the time, and I frequently overheard it while working in the area, but wasn't impressed with the teacher, and I know the only thing I learned from overhearing that class was that I wouldn't ever take a class from that man. Wasn't the same person wo was teaching me in one-on-one sessions, and who, herself, was at the time doing an independent study or something of that sort with a big-name local Photoshop artist. I also went through most of a Classroom in a Book Tutorial, later, which I think filled in a few gaps. But there are still many gaps in what I know. (I didn't finish the book because I still had a few chapters to go when I delivered my second child; suddenly I didn't have the time! Never went back and completed the book, for a variety of reasons.) Probably a class with a competent teacher would be effective. (In fact, in the same college, the photo adviser who taught me Photoshop one-on-one is now teaching the class; HER students are probably learning something.) Summary: in my case, OJT and books. ERN

The BW choice is good. It's the best there is right now. Given the E6 doesn't cost much to test with, and if they are going to pay some big bucks for your work, I'd set up the environment in advance and shoot a test sequence with each film. RE: 77 limited or 85* for portraits/canndids
I have had them all: FA*85/f1.4, A*85/f1.4, K85/f1.8, M85/f2, FA77/f1.8. This is what I think: - The 1.4s are simply too big and heavy for everyday use, and too intimidating for portraits. Thus I sold them. - The FA*85/f1.4 and the M85/f2 are specialists for portraits. Do not use them at open aperture for anything else. However, stopped down they are excellent in every respect. Yes, at f5.6-f11 they are very sharp. - The A*85/f1.4 seems to be optimised for high contrast at open aperture. It is good for available light photography but not so good for portraits or close-ups. - The K85/f1.8 and the FA77/f1.8 seem to be the best all-purpose lenses with the 77 offering the higher resolution, and with the K85 offering the longer focal length. - At the same aperture, the M85/f2 gives the smoothest background/biggest blur. - However, the bokeh of the K85/f1.8 seems to be the most natural. I've been debating taking a Photoshop class. (7 is what I'll be using, and let's not go there again, re versions. ;-)) So I am curious, if you use Photoshop, did you ever take a class in it? Or did you just learn it from books? I had a hard time with Photoshop until I took an online course in it, years ago. Since then I have just been learning more as I went along. I've never bothered to read a book about it. You might want to check out the book Adobe Photoshop 7.0 for Photographers, First Edition by Martin Evening http://tinyurl.com/2vqy7 It got varying reviews on Amazon, but check it out for yourself. ERN is right; not all professors are that great. Maybe you could see if you could sit in on a class with the instructor of the class you want to take and see if you like him/her. Amita

Re: 6x7 film choice
- Original Message - From: Kevin Waterson Subject: 6x7 film choice I will be shooting some indoor dancers. The layout is simple with 2 x 400 Watt studio flashes 1 stop apart with a white paper backdrop. Any stories greatfully recieved. Velvia is the last film I would use for this. Consider faster films, I have 800ws of power in my studio light setup, and find that 100 is on the slow side with the 6x7. My standby with the 6x7 is HP-5+ for black and white, Kodak Portra 400 for colour. I don't shoot much reversal anymore in the studio, but I would still pursue a 400 iso were I to need it. Re: Pentax MX battery problem
HT And it could be it's just a battery that has leaked and clobbed up the HT hatch! HT Maybe some oil and brute force could help, and after replacing the HT battery, it might be fully functional! HT Hell, i'm gonna give it a shot! :-) HT /Henri Henri, if you can't open the hatch, simply remove the whole bottom housing by the three screws there (if I can remember correctly), and clean the battery plate offcamera with strong winegar or citric acid I think. Heating it a little could help too. When you are at it, there is a MX repair guide at www.robertstech.com (Mark Robert's site). You can check for corrosion in the wires going from the battery compartment (there is possibly just one, as the other pole would be connected trough the chassis), battery acid can corrode inside wires too. And check the two golden plate contacts at the bottom of left side of camera (the side with shutter dial), these close the metering circuit when you press on the shutter release button. Often, these need just a little adjustment or cleaning to get a working meter. Best regards, Frantisek Vlcek
Re: OT: To Photoshop Class, Or Not?
When I first started using PS I wanted to take a class in it. Now I think I could probably teach a class at least for photographers. Most classes seem to be aimed at graphic artists. There are a number of things in Photoshop a photographer will probably never use, or at least will be secondary or tertiary to the job at hand. Try to find out the background of the person teaching the course and the focus of their instruction. RE: A 15mm
I'm really curious, because usually a lens this wide has its own limitations but often makes a spectacular view. I mean, if Pentax is still selling this lens, it should be good. How much do you pay for it? It wasn't cheap. I won't say beyond that, as I have too good a relationship with my local retailer to want to risk screwing it up. I may have gotten a very good price indeed, even so. BH sells it for about US $1500, if that's any help, Winston.

RE: 50/1.4 and 135/2.5
I plead guilty to starting this. It's not just that the F version is rated a bit higher than the FA version. It's that just one other 50mm was rated quite as high (4.6) by Photodo (Hasselblad); the Leica Sumicron-M 50mm f2.0. If these tests are credible, it places the SMC F 1.4/50mm as the very best 1.4/50mm ever tested by Photodo. The Leica Summilux-M 1.4/50mm was rated 4.2 - the same as the Pentax SMC FA 1.4/50mm. So this could indicate that the Pentax lenses can be even sharper than the corresponding Leica lenses. This is what I found interesting. It's not especially interesting, that there may be a samll difference betwen two versions of Pentax 50mm lenses. I suppose it depends on what you're doing with photos. I found 7 to be a vast improvement over 6 for photo repair and restoration, and the file browser is a wonderful tool, once you get to know it. As for it being a memory gobbler, I'd disagree on that point as well. It ran very well on a Win98 machine with 512mb of memory. Can't remember ever needing the scratch disk. Local newspaper snapshot
Hi Pentax users one of my last black and white photos showing a pair of swans with the nest and 7 eggs was published two days ago in the snapshot of the week of a local newspaper called LiZ (Limmat-Zeitung) here. They usually select photos showing typical and current scenes from the Limmattal region, mostly landscape photos or close-up's of unusual things. I got some responses from people I know and it is indeed a special feeling to look at this edition of the newspaper :-) It's the second time in 2 month that my photo was chosen and both times I used a Pentax, the first time the ME super with the manual A70-210mm zoom and for the swans a Pentax SFx with manual Sigma Zoom 70-300mm at 300 mm on a tripod at about 10 meters distance to not disturb the birds. So, be encouraged to send your best shots to a publisher too, it is fun. The price money corresponds to about 12 rolls of film :-) happy pentaxing Markus

good Second hand stores for back-packs
Hi Tanya in the warehouses and specialized shops her, photo equipment and traveling bags are rather expensive. Prices easily start at $30 for a common camera bag and up to much more for robust back-backs or brands. Luckily there are half a dozen second hand stores near the town or in Zurich. Today I found a upholstered artificial leather photo bag in nearly unused condition. It has separate room (compartments) for a camera body, flash, two big lenses and a lot of space for filters and film in separate pockets and other useful equipment. It was $3 and at that price, they have a lot of special back-backs too, some in nearly new condition. I own now one for every of my 3 camera/lens sets ready to go outdoors:-) I often find filters and good books too, the camera bodies and lenses are mostly defective or in doubtful condition. The salesperson do not really know the value of filters, I get them for $3-$5 independent of brand, size or type. Do you have second hand shops like these and did you already make some good deals there? happy pentaxing Markus BTW, I just noticed that KEH.com has some pretty cheap used ones... tan.

To sweeten your weekend, I have two questions for you (and yes, the results of the opinion poll will be published here) 1 Which 3 photos you made are your most loved ones? 1b is it for their content or the circumstances of the taking or anything else? 2 Are these photos of private affair showing for example members your family or not? 2b Would you publish them for us ? If yes, with a link :-) 3 feel free to add any impressive or strange stories about taking the shoots. Some of the photos I really love are of private nature when I was at the age of 17-20. I had two engagements as a seaman on Swiss freight ships worldwide and took my first photos on sea in 1977 with a Olympus XA compact camera. When the ship came into dock in Hong Kong the second time I worked as sailor in 1981, I bought my first Pentax ME super. I took a lot of pictures of the crew at work and gave the photos to them Most of the negatives have suffered severely and are unusable in between due to humidity and false storage :-( So I am left with about 10 enlargements from that time, some show the seamen baptized and hair cropping all over :-) thanks Markus

A number of us have experience of this lens and other 85/1.4s from different makers. Whether it's worth it or not is a matter for the individual wallet. In another thread you asked for a list of the unwritten rules of pdml. There is a long-standing convention that we don't mention Pentax items on auction sites before the sale is concluded. The exception to this is that it's ok for people to post items they themselves are selling. The thinking behind this is that many people put a lot of effort into searching for bargains, and it's not fair on them if something they're bidding on suddenly attracts a lot of bids from people who put no effort into it. Some people disagree with this convention, and from time to time somebody posts notice of an auction. Occasionally it all flares up into an e-squabble. I neither buy nor sell on auction sites, so I have no personal stake in this either way. I don't know whether or not this sale was over when you posted your email, so I'm not having a go at you, merely mentioning one of our (sometimes controversial) little conventions. -- Cheers, Bob

These are the remaining cameras and lenses that I want to sell: Pentax Z-1 AF SLR + Fdp Gripstrap + F electronic cable release + instruction manual, in Spanish (I will also include 2 unused 2CR5 lithium batteries, each one lasts about twenty-five 36-exposure films) and original boxes. The camera is in excellent condition, both mecanically and electronically, but there is some light mist into the eyepiece, not visible except against strong light. It doesn't have any influence on the performance of the camera or the metering, but it is somewhat annoying when you are shooting backlit scenes. I suppose it is quite easy to clean, but I don't dare to disassemble the eyepiece, and as I want to sell the camera, it doesn't make to much sense to have it cleaned. I want 220 euros for everything, a cheap price due to the eyepiece issue. Pentax MZ-5 AF SLR + Fg AA battery grip + Spanish instruction manual, boxed. Both the camera and the battery grip are in LN condition (I don't have the neckstrap, though). 200 euros. SMC-Pentax FA 80-320 mm. 4.5-5.6 AF zoom (black version) + Pentax plastic clip-on hood (designed for the K-series 85-210 mm.) 135 euros. In excellent+ condition. 120 euros. Kenko SHQ 1.5x AF teleconverter + case. Like new and boxed, it has the contacts needed for Pentax powerzoom lenses. 50 euros. If you are interested in one of these items, please send a message to my email box, not the list. Shipping expenses are not included in these prices. Thank you for your attention. Re: K2 Problem
WJ I have a K2 that has developed a problem with the shutter. At slow speeds WJ (approx 1/30 and below) about every third or fourth shot the speed will be WJ off, it sounds like the camera is firing at sync speed (1/125). Anyone have WJ any handy hints or experienced the same? Right now a CLA is not in my WJ budget and if it's possible there is a fairly simple DIY solution that would WJ be great. I think there is none (simple solution). This problem indicates probably dirty shutter solenoids - that's not a trivial repair, although it can be done by a competent CLA. Sorry to disappoint you :-( I do hope it's some simpler error, though. Does it occur only in AUTO or MAN mode as well? Best regards, Frantisek Vlcek

Re: good Second hand stores for back-packs
Hi, all of the specialised photo bags are rather expensive. I am using Domkes at my work (they are excellent for reportages), but for some unconspicious photo bags you can consider the many military and boyscout bags. They are dirt cheap, and look sufficiently dirty to not attract thieves. My friend carries his rather expensive better unnamed German camera in one. You can do very good customised padded inserts from a foam sleeping mat (closed cell foam like Evazote is the best, and is cheap in craft stores) plus some nylon cloth so the cameras won't catch on the foam. Add some weatherproofing spray and you are all set. Especially if you are a non-trendy old bearded guy, nobody would except an expensive camera with you! Best regards, Frantisek Vlcek

Re: OT : Camera Fanny Pack (GFM)
BTW, I went with the Tamrac Velocity 5. Someone on Amazon gave it a good review regarding it fitting the 300D (it's slightly deeper than some waist/fanny packs). Also it is modular so I can add on a water bottle and a deeper lens bag. Which is what I did. Ching, ching, ching. Now I have to retotal the GFM trip costs. ;-) Again, thanks everyone for their input. Marnie aka Doe Too busy to real-life shop, unfortunately.

Re: OT: Safelight question
Hi Collin. I must have mised your respose. I don't know if fog is the correct term. The prints have a grey ness to them.I don't have this problem with the dark room class.Prints look good and whites are white, blacks are black. At home they are more grey whites and muddy blacks. Paper and chemicals are new. I'll investigate an amber bulb if i can find one. Thanks Dave I never had a problem with a dark red bulb fogging paper. But ... is the fogging consistent across the paper, including the border? -- suspect your paper of heat/age damage. is the fogging in swirls? -- suspect the light. The swirls come when swishing the developer in the try, so the liquid acts as a fluid lens and makes the patterns. Do a print in total darkness (obviously except for the paper exposure) to diagnose further. I've also had some fast papers that didn't like amber, so I had to go back to dark red. Collin

Re: OT: Safelight question
bcin I don't know if fog is the correct term. The prints have a bcin grey ness to them.I don't have Hi Dave, that would indeed seem like fogging by safelight. A small light exposure which doesn't show itself on the print, a treshold exposure, while not showing, can seriously affect the contrast of the print when you expose it on the enlarger. This effect is sometimes used deliberately to lower the contrast of slides in high contrast scenes. Do the blind test, you will see if it's light leakage or bad chemistry. The packaging is ok on the papers? Best regards, Frantisek Vlcek

RE: good Second hand stores for back-packs
LOL! Markus, you don't know where I live do you?! We have precisely 8 shops in my town - a supermarket, a post office, a butchers, a newsagents, a chemist, a video/dvd hire shop, a shoe shop and a florist. We also have 3 cafe/coffee shops and 6 Pubs! The nearest city that would have any of the type of stores that you mention, is about 1200kms away! As such, I pretty much do ALL of my shopping online, but I can't wait to get to the US and check out the thrift/second hand stores (we call them Op Shops), and see just what I am missing out on! tan. -Original Message- From: Markus Maurer [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, 22 May 2004 5:20 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: good Second hand stores for back-packs Hi Tanya in the warehouses and specialized shops her, photo equipment and traveling bags are rather expensive. Do you have second hand shops like these and did you already make some good deals there? happy pentaxing Markus BTW, I just noticed that KEH.com has some pretty cheap used ones... tan.

Re: FS Friday: Some Neat Items
Joe, I'm interested in the Arsat lens . . . does it act as an M or an A lens? Have you tried it on the *ist D? (The other one will be taken, as the saying goes, from my cold, dead hands.) It's a wonderful, sharp lens, and the best 28-105 that Pentax had made. It's large and a bit heavy on MZ/ZX bodies, wonderful on the (P)Z-1 or 1p. Ex or EX+ by KEH standards. KEH sells them for $126. This one is $100. It is truly a lot of lens for $100. Pentax AF 400T turnip-masher flash, with bracket. GN 130 (in feet). This is a big, professional flash, that tilts, swivels, and twirls in all directions. If you can't illuminate your subject with this, wait until daylight. Can also be used to club spouses who change the settings on color-calibrated monitors. EX or EX+. KEH sells them from $189 to $205. Yours for $150. Sigma 70-300 AF APO Macro F4.0-5.6. This is the apochromatic version, and it yields quite sharp images. The macro capability if quite handy. KEH has one in EX+ for $133. This one is like new with original box, bag, shade, papers, all for $100.00 Olympus Varimagni Right Angle Finder. This one fits Pentax cameras (at least since the PZ-1p, including the *ist D). It has 1.2 and 2.5x magnification, and shifts between landscape and portrait mode. I'd keep it, but since I wear glasses it is just too difficult for me. $125, or make me a reasonable offer. And the surprise: Arsat 35 mm. F2.8 shift/tilt in K-mount. This one came directly from the factory in the Ukraine (where the K-mount attachment was put on specifically to fill my order) and is still in like new condition. Here's your chance to own a genuine tilt/shift lens for a fraction of the price of a Japanese one. It is sharp, sturdy, and well made. These go for over $400 on eBay. Yours for $300, or make me a reasonable counteroffer. If interested please contact me off-list at: jtainter at mindspring dot com In a few days anything not sold will go to KEH. Thanks, Joe
Refconverter M
Hello all, A month or two back, I posted to the list, asking if the Refconverter M could be mounted to the *ist D. I'm happy to report back now, that I have obtained and tested this item on my own *ist D. One of the concerns was that the M series cameras had a smaller viewfinder (or at least the viewfinder and the information contained there-within). As it turns out, the M Refconverter is able to see all information in the viewfinder of the *ist D, which I believe is due to the smaller size. As a side note, this was a purchase from ebay, which I believe I got a good deal on. Upon arrival, I found that the refconverter had been dropped during it's life, and had a crack in it when viewed from the nonbusiness end of the Refconverter. However, when viewed from the business end, the crack is not visible, and it is a perfectly acceptable user model. I attribute this to the great manufacturing of Pentax. IL Bill
