A handy tip is to place long links between < and > marks. Several
e-mail programs then will recognize that it's one continuing URL even
if it's broken over two or more lines.

Compare this:

http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewSellersOtherItems&userid=scann
i01&include=0&since=-1&sort=3&rows=50

Note that there is a line break at the end of line one in both cases.

You could even do like this:

Fantastic! My eldest (9) picks up a camera from time to time. I have showed
him the basics of how it works and some while back he was encouraged enough
to get a book out of the school library on the subject. I'll answer any
questions I can, but from there on in, what and how he takes photographs of
is down to him; subject matter, composition and style is something for him
to discover for himself, without any pressure or pre-conceived ideas from
me.

Wish Claire success from me!

Thanks for all the interest that was shown in my recent clear out of
lenses etc. The 80-200mm and 24mm both went almost straight away. The
remainder has now been listed on eBay. I was going to wait until later
in the week, however I will be too busy this week for anything.
Therefore I decided to list early.

Items listed

Tokina 300mm ATX-SD F/2.8 MF

Tokina 28-80mm ATX-PRO F/2.8

Got to witness something that I always think of as quite special - a
mantid ovipositing (that means laying eggs... and an ootheca is an egg-case)
Like many insects, these things generally exist in the winter only in
the form of eggs tucked away somewhere safe - at this time of year (it's
autumn in Oz remember) the adult female is getting cold, her prey is
scarce, and to ensure the continuation of her species she has to make a
little foamy ootheca before her death. Come spring, ichneumons
permitting, out will come a little regiment of baby mantids, at first
hanging from silk threads, then going out to make their way in the world.
I don't know whether I've managed to express myself well enough, but it
is something that to me is quite touching.
Needless to say, when I saw this one, I got my camera and took some
snaps. It's Orthodera ministralis, the Garden Mantid. These things also
have some pretty spectacular flash/display colouration.

http://davidavid.whatsbeef.net/mantid.jpg
As you can see, it's just finishing up the ootheca, and had scarpered
five minutes later.

Yes, several over the years, including week long workshops.
The most important thing about classes and workshops is not only the
teacher's ability to teach but also if Photoshop is being taught for graphic
artists or for photographers. Most of the local Community college courses
around here (south east Michigan) were being taught with the graphic artist
in mind, useful to a point but alot of non useful things were also taught.
I've taken weeklong workshops from professional photographers using
Photoshop in their everyday business - I learned the most applicable stuff
from these guys.
I highly recommend Geo Lepp's workshops for the course material and the
hands on lab work.
One week at one of these will have your head spinning with new ideas and new
ways of doing old things you've been doing.

Antonio,
I've pretty much been ignoring all this silliness, but, for the record,
nothing that Mr. Robb says to you of a nature that you may say is
threatening is illegal.
Yes, Threatening Assault or Death is illegal. Yes, it can be done

remotely.

BUT, the receipient of said threat must ~reasonably~ fear for his life

or

safety. The fact that Bill has no idea where you live, and therefore

would

be unable to carry through with any threat would be a consideration in
whether the police would lay charges.
And, while a threat can be made remotely, the fact that you're in the UK

(I

surmise by your e-mail addy) and Mr. Robb lives in my fine country

(Canada)

means that due to that distance, you have no reason to ~reasonably~ fear

any

imminent assault from Mr. Robb.
So (and again, I emphasize that I have no idea what he said to you, and
neither do I care), whatever was uttered may have been vulgar, tasteless

or

threatening, however it was surely not actionable in a Criminal or Civil
Court, in either the UK or Canada.
At least, that's my limited understanding of the law as it exists.

2004-05-21 Thread Bill Owens
I've had the privilege of working with this machine for a couple of weeks
now, and the more I use it the more impressed I become. It's nearly as good
as Photoshop for correcting levels and colors. Many of our customer's films
were shot under fluorescent lighting and it's quite easy to add magenta to
kill most of the color cast from them.

Hi William and Mark,
this indeed sounds probable. I do not know how but I just haven't
read the part about the shutter sounding like the X speed. I just wrongly
assumed it was the same problem I saw earlier in some K2, which
behaved oppositely - every few shots it opened the shutter for
longer than selected. Must read the nessages I am replying to
   better next time :)

Six pubs -- 2000 people. Yeah, about right, when you parse out the
imbibers!

Let's see, your town's maybe 60% male, that's about 1200 males.
Of those, 50% are of drinking age, perhaps 45% actually DO drink--that's
about 540 drinkers.
Add another 250 drinking females (might be low on that number ;¬) for
maybe 790 total.
Average of 15% of those who, at any given time care to be using the pub
correctly, that's about 118, give or take.
Divided by 6 = a shade over 19 drinkers/pub on any given night.
Double that for the week-ends...

They'll easily accommodate that, what! (Well, I had to know if you had
enough!)

Sounds like a nice town!

Could be something as simple as a bad (corroded) battery connection.
When you have no power (dead batteries or some other reason) the shutter
defaults to sync speed. If it really is going to sync speed when you get

Actually, Malcolm,
She is interested in photography. I should buy a roll of cheapy pre-paid
processing film, and let her fool around with one of my Spotties for a
while. I think at 11 she's old enough. She's actually not bad with
disposable cameras, so I should let her try a "real" camera. Those things
are pretty bomb-proof, and when she handles my cameras (she loves looking
through them!) she's very careful. She's always asking me questions about
how they work, and I've given her a crash course on shutter speed and
apertures and stuff. This might be a great time to get her going!

Good idea you gave me. Thanks!
And, I'm glad you liked the pic. With a subject as cute as Claire, how can

altogether sane and love it. I'm at "It's a Grind" coffee shop, 1035 N.
Tustin Blvd., Anaheim, California where I hang most days. If not here,
anyone else in the shop can point your Gestapo to where I am.

As to perspectives, I believe you need a new one. Bend over and find that
big hole just behind your scrotum. Stick your head up in there. You'll find
yourself quite in the dark, which should help you in your quest to avoid
disturbing enlightenment. As for air, you may breath all the methane you
heretofore have been spewing out to the list. Don't worry about food. Eat
all you want, the new perspective insures a never ending supply. Just talk.

Damn, I enjoyed that!

Refconverter M

2004-05-21 Thread William M Kane
Hello all,
A month or two back, I posted to the list, asking if the
Refconverter M could be mounted to the *ist D. I'm happy to report
back now, that I have obtained and tested this item on my own *ist D.
One of the concerns was that the M series cameras had a smaller
viewfinder (or at least the viewfinder and the information contained
there-within). As it turns out, the M Refconverter is able to see all
information in the viewfinder of the *ist D, which I believe is due to
the smaller size.

As a side note, this was a purchase from ebay, which I believe I got
a good deal on. Upon arrival, I found that the refconverter had been
dropped during it's life, and had a crack in it when viewed from the
nonbusiness end of the Refconverter. However, when viewed from the
business end, the crack is not visible, and it is a perfectly
acceptable user model. I attribute this to the great manufacturing of
Pentax.

Joe,
I'm interested in the Arsat lens . . . does it act as an M or an A
lens? Have you tried it on the *ist D? Is the k-mount permanantly
attached, or does it screw off like the pentax m-42 to K adapter?

FA PowerZoom 28-105 F4.0-5.6. This is one of my favorites, but I have
two. (The other one will be taken, as the saying goes, from my cold,
dead hands.) It's a wonderful, sharp lens, and the best 28-105 that
Pentax had made. It's large and a bit heavy on MZ/ZX bodies, wonderful
on the (P)Z-1 or 1p. Ex or EX+ by KEH standards. KEH sells them for
$126. This one is $100. It is truly a lot of lens for $100.

Pentax AF 400T turnip-masher flash, with bracket. GN 130 (in feet).
This is a big, professional flash, that tilts, swivels, and twirls in
all directions. If you can't illuminate your subject with this, wait
until daylight. Can also be used to club spouses who change the
settings on color-calibrated monitors. EX or EX+. KEH sells them from
$189 to $205. Yours for $150.

Sigma 70-300 AF APO Macro F4.0-5.6. This is the apochromatic version,
and it yields quite sharp images. The macro capability if quite handy.
KEH has one in EX+ for $133. This one is like new with original box,
bag, shade, papers, all for $100.00

Olympus Varimagni Right Angle Finder. This one fits Pentax cameras (at
least since the PZ-1p, including the *ist D). It has 1.2 and 2.5x
magnification, and shifts between landscape and portrait mode. I'd
keep it, but since I wear glasses it is just too difficult for me.
$125, or make me a reasonable offer.

And the surprise: Arsat 35 mm. F2.8 shift/tilt in K-mount. This one
came directly from the factory in the Ukraine (where the K-mount
attachment was put on specifically to fill my order) and is still in
like new condition. Here's your chance to own a genuine tilt/shift
lens for a fraction of the price of a Japanese one. It is sharp,
sturdy, and well made. These go for over $400 on eBay. Yours for $300,
or make me a reasonable counteroffer.

If interested please contact me off-list at:
jtainter at mindspring dot com
In a few days anything not sold will go to KEH.
Thanks,
Joe

The nearest "city" that would have any of the type of stores that you

As such, I pretty much do ALL of my shopping online, but I can't wait to get

Hi Tanya
in the warehouses and specialized shops her, photo equipment and traveling
bags are rather expensive.
Prices easily start at $30 for a common camera bag and up to much more for
robust back-backs or brands.
Luckily there are half a dozen second hand stores near the town or in
Zurich.
Today I found a upholstered artificial leather photo bag in nearly unused
condition.
It has separate room (compartments) for a camera body, flash, two big lenses
and a lot of
space for filters and film in separate pockets and other useful equipment.
It was $3 and at that price, they have a lot of
special back-backs too, some in nearly new condition. I own now one for
every of my 3 camera/lens sets ready to go outdoors:-)
I often find filters and good books too, the camera bodies and lenses are
mostly defective or in doubtful condition.
The salesperson do not really know the value of filters, I get them for
$3-$5 independent of brand, size or type.

Do you have second hand shops like these and did you already make some good
deals there?
happy pentaxing

Hi Dave, that would indeed seem like fogging by safelight. A small light exposure
which doesn't show itself on the print, a treshold exposure, while not
showing, can seriously affect the contrast of the print when you
expose it on the enlarger. This effect is sometimes used deliberately
to lower the contrast of slides in high contrast scenes. Do the blind
test, you will see if it's light leakage or bad chemistry. The
packaging is ok on the papers?

Hi,
all of the specialised photo bags are rather expensive. I am using
Domkes at my work (they are excellent for reportages), but for some
unconspicious photo bags you can consider the many military and
boyscout bags. They are dirt cheap, and look sufficiently dirty to
not attract thieves. My friend carries his rather expensive better
unnamed German camera in one. You can do very good customised
padded inserts from a foam sleeping mat (closed cell foam like
Evazote is the best, and is cheap in craft stores) plus some nylon
cloth so the cameras won't catch on the foam. Add some
weatherproofing spray and you are all set. Especially if you are a
non-trendy old bearded guy, nobody would except an expensive camera
   with you!

FS: Cameras and lenses

2004-05-21 Thread Carlos Royo
These are the remaining cameras and lenses that I want to sell:
Pentax Z-1 AF SLR + Fdp Gripstrap + F electronic cable release +
instruction manual, in Spanish (I will also include 2 unused 2CR5
lithium batteries, each one lasts about twenty-five 36-exposure films)
and original boxes.
The camera is in excellent condition, both mecanically and
electronically, but there is some light "mist" into the eyepiece, not
visible except against strong light. It doesn't have any influence on
the performance of the camera or the metering, but it is somewhat
annoying when you are shooting backlit scenes. I suppose it is quite
easy to clean, but I don't dare to disassemble the eyepiece, and as I
want to
sell the camera, it doesn't make to much sense to have it cleaned. I
want 220 euros for everything, a cheap price due to the eyepiece issue.

Pentax MZ-5 AF SLR + Fg AA battery grip + Spanish instruction manual,
boxed. Both the camera and the battery grip are in LN condition (I don't
have the neckstrap, though). 200 euros.

SMC-Pentax FA 80-320 mm. 4.5-5.6 AF zoom (black version) + Pentax
plastic clip-on hood (designed for the K-series 85-210 mm.) 135 euros.
In excellent+ condition. 120 euros.
Kenko SHQ 1.5x AF teleconverter + case. Like new and boxed, it has the
contacts needed for Pentax powerzoom lenses. 50 euros.
If you are interested in one of these items, please send a message to my
email box, not the list. Shipping expenses are not included in these prices.
Thank you for your attention.

that's a lot of money for an f:4.0 lens! ;O)
The A* f/1.4 is at least as good as any other lens in its class, and
usually sells for about the same as the others. A number of us have
experience of this lens and other 85/1.4s from different makers.
Whether
it's worth it or not is a matter for the individual wallet.

In another thread you asked for a list of the unwritten rules of pdml.
There is a long-standing convention that we don't mention Pentax items
on auction sites before the sale is concluded. The exception to this
is that it's ok for people to post items they themselves are selling.
The thinking behind this is that many people put a lot of effort into
searching for bargains, and it's not fair on them if something they're
bidding on suddenly attracts a lot of bids from people who put no
effort into it.
Some people disagree with this convention, and from time to time
somebody posts notice of an auction. Occasionally it all flares up
into an e-squabble.
I neither buy nor sell on auction sites, so I have no personal stake
in this either way.
I don't know whether or not this sale was over when you posted your
email, so I'm not having a go at you, merely mentioning one of our
(sometimes controversial) little conventions.

Weekend survey

2004-05-21 Thread Markus Maurer

To sweeten your weekend, I have two questions for you (and yes, the results
of the opinion poll will be published here)

1 Which 3 photos you made are your most loved ones?
1b is it for their content or the circumstances of the taking or anything
else?

2 Are these photos of private affair showing for example members your family
or not?
2b Would you publish them for us ? If yes, with a link :-)

3 feel free to add any impressive or strange stories about taking the
shoots.

Some of the photos I really love are of private nature when I was at the
age of 17-20.
I had two engagements as a seaman on Swiss freight ships worldwide and took
my first photos on sea in 1977 with
a Olympus XA compact camera. When the ship came into dock in Hong Kong the
second time I worked as sailor in 1981,
I bought my first Pentax ME super. I took a lot of pictures of the crew at
work and gave the photos to them
Most of the negatives have suffered severely and are unusable in between due
to humidity and false storage :-(
So I am left with about 10 enlargements from that time, some show the
"seamen baptized" and hair cropping all over :-)

thanks
Markus

good Second hand stores for back-packs

2004-05-21 Thread Markus Maurer
Hi Tanya
in the warehouses and specialized shops her, photo equipment and traveling
bags are rather expensive.

No, no, it's early 90's and I believe it was made by Cosina. I also saw some
bearing original Cosina name.

Before the 90s Ricoh wasn't making their own lenses neither. Some
earlier Ricoh K lenses at the time of their first XR bodies in the
80s, were made by Asahi. I have an XR 28/3.5 and an XR 200/4 that
are optically IDENTICAL to their Pentax M counterpart, I mean
internal baffling rings, color of coating of all elements, same
optics. Externally different: size of fosusing ring, rubber style,
color of the distance marks...

K2 Problem

Hi all,

I have a K2 that has developed a problem with the shutter. At slow speeds
(approx 1/30 and below) about every third or fourth shot the speed will be
off, it sounds like the camera is firing at sync speed (1/125). Anyone have
any handy hints or experienced the same? Right now a CLA is not in my

be great.

Thanks!

Local newspaper snapshot

2004-05-21 Thread Markus Maurer
Hi Pentax users
one of my last black and white photos showing a pair of swans with the nest
and 7 eggs was published two days ago
in the "snapshot of the week" of a local newspaper called LiZ
(Limmat-Zeitung) here. They usually select photos showing typical and
current scenes from the "Limmattal" region, mostly landscape photos or
close-up's of unusual things.
I got some responses from people I know and it is indeed a special feeling
to look at this edition of the newspaper :-)
It's the second time in 2 month that my photo was chosen and both times I
used a Pentax, the first time the ME super with the manual A70-210mm zoom
and for the swans a Pentax SFx with manual Sigma Zoom 70-300mm at 300 mm on
a tripod at about 10 meters distance to not disturb the birds.

So, be encouraged to send your best shots to a publisher too, it is fun.
The price money corresponds to about 12 rolls of film :-)
happy pentaxing
Markus

I suppose it depends on what you're doing with photos. I found 7 to be a
vast improvement over 6 for photo repair and restoration, and the file
browser is a wonderful tool, once you get to know it. As for it being a
memory gobbler, I'd disagree on that point as well. It ran very well on a
Win98 machine with 512mb of memory. Can't remember ever needing the
scratch disk.

Now, compared to Elements, maybe, but it's all relative.

RE: 50/1.4 and 135/2.5

2004-05-21 Thread Jens Bladt
I plead guilty to starting this.
It's not just that the F version is rated a bit higher than the FA version.
It's that just one other 50mm was rated quite as high (4.6) by Photodo
(Hasselblad); the Leica Sumicron-M 50mm f2.0.
If these tests are credible, it places the SMC F 1.4/50mm as the very best
1.4/50mm ever tested by Photodo.
The Leica Summilux-M 1.4/50mm was rated 4.2 - the same as the Pentax SMC FA
1.4/50mm. So this could indicate that the Pentax lenses can be even sharper
than the corresponding Leica lenses. This is what I found interesting. It's
not especially interesting, that there may be a samll difference betwen two
versions of Pentax 50mm lenses.
