The current istD price is < $1300 with lens, mail order.
As we see a new cheapie @ < $600 next year and the nice one
maintaining that $1500-price-class prsence,
then used istD units should start going pretty cheap.

But what will I ever do with those 200+ rolls of (mostly) Kodak & (some)

RE: Will I ever use my MX again?

2004-05-27 Thread Cesar Matamoros II
Thomas,

In your instance, I would have to say that you will not use your MX again.

I do shoot to capture the moment as you do. But more often than not, I also
try very hard to make sure that the exposure is correct. I think this is
where we differ a lot.

The best praise I have ever received was from a few photo lab technicians
who comment that they rarely ever have to correct my exposures (other than
to take into account machine anomalies). And if they do, once it is dialed
in with the first shot, it is consistent throughout the roll. This is
something I take into my digital shooting too. I do not want to spend any
of my time color correcting my shots in front of the computer. I prefer to
only consider cropping.

I still shoot film. Just yesterday I shot digitally to confirm exposure for
my 'little sister's' bridal portraits, but shot the real shots with my 645n.
For my travels I will always shoot film.

As for using manual focus, I tend to use my AF cameras in manual focus quite
a bit. It usually depends on the situation. The bridal portraits I took
yesterday was mostly in AF.

I have shot with Pentax and Nikon in terms of autofocus, and though it may
be true that Pentax may be a little slower, I find that I use manual focus
with the *ist D as often as when I used the D1X and D1H.

It is a question of taste perhaps, I find myself relying on AF at times and
finding out that I should have used mf and gotten the shot I wanted.

Most often my sport shots are with the manual focus A* 300/4.

You cant scan negs without the transparancy
attachment to the flatbed..
you need the light from the top as well as the
bottom - is that the problem ?
the orange gets corrected to real color using the
proper hardware and settings.
i'm using an Epson 1640sup and it works fine.

Dario, I understood that fully, it is just the
COLOR of the www - not the size...
it really detracts from your photos... you could
even make the sig a little biger,
but closer in color to what is in the photograph -
and always on the left hand side.
Keeping the image fairly small helps, too...

RE: Mirror foam on MX

2004-05-27 Thread David Miers
I ordered the bumpers from Pentax for my PZ-1 and used double sided 3M tape
cut to a small sliver to install them. The idea of any liquid type glue in
a camera is scary to me! That was almost 2 years ago and they are fine. In
the case of my PZ-1 I ripped it trying to change the focus screen, but I
would wonder about the rest of the seals if one is bad? The outside seals
for the film door are no problem, but aren't there some other ones around
the shutter or something? Walmart used to sell a felt that has an adhesive
back to it in sheet for like $1. Those work great for film door seals. I
think it was my K1000 and a Sears(Ricoh) that I redid both film doors in
this manner.

Well with the foam bad you can chip the mirror if you keep using it. Note:
Personal experience talking here.

However it is a $5 do-it-yourself fix. Basically a 1.5mm wide by 3mm thick
piece
of foam the width of the mirror. Pentax USA still had the mirror bumper in
stock
a year ago. Your local Pentax distributor may still have them too. But you
can
cut a piece of foam to fit. The foam sold by places like

http://www.micro-tools.com/docs.htm

is softer then the Pentax stuff, mouse pad foam is harder. Contact cement
works
fine.

Tan, there'll be about a dozen of us with ist-D cameras at GFM and most
of us will have USB cables on hand. You can borrow mine if need be.

When I was racing motorcycles, I typically had to leave for a weekend of
racing right after work on Friday, with packing done late on Thursday
night in near panic. I learned to do "triage" packing: You divide
everything into three categories:
1 - Stuff that's absolutely irreplaceable. Motorcycle, for example ;-)
2 - Stuff that can be procured (purchased/borrowed) on site, but with
great expense and/or difficulty.
3 - Stuff that can be procured on site with relative ease or can be done
without if necessary.

The USB cable ranks somewhere between categories one and two. Relax and
enjoy the rest of your trip. :)

There are two types of mini-USB connectors. One that about 90% of

Guess which one Pentax went with?

The common one is small and flat. The uncommon one is small and round.

You might resolve your biggest gripe with the lens if you consider what is
happening when you focus 1:1. At 1:1 the lens elements are moved far from
the
focal plane so the light gathering area at the focal plane is receiving only
a
small percentage of the entire image circle projected by the lens, hence the
reduction in apparent brightness. So don't be disappointed macro lenses all
behave similarly.

I guess Smega lenses offer a higher profit ratio? If that's not a conflict
nothing is, but hell it's been that way for years in Oz.

I read a little self promotion and scare mongering in the article too, I bet
they aren't so pleased they offered to match OS prices now. I made them match a
the regular web price for a *ist D from a big Japanese retailer and I factored
in all reasonable costs (to which they didn't disagree). But they still umm'd
arr'd and procrastinated over the final deal, then they tried to make me feel

shouldn't talk to any other photos or dealers. And all the time I could have
bought it from Japan at the same price retail without any great hassle.

I should have clarified my question a bit more:
If I scan color negatives with a flatbed scanner - not a specialized
negative scanner with matching software -
how do I correct the orange layer?
Can that be done with imaging software, the normal twain driver does no
conversion
on the Epson flatbed scanner here?
I see the "invert" command for b/w negatives in Photoshop and others.
thanks

Very nicely executed, the only improvement it may have benefited from would
have been a little light reflected on the birds underside, have you tried
lightening it up a little in PS?

Indeed. There are three standard USB connectors:
USB-A: this is what goes in to the 'host', ie computer
USB-B: goes in to the peripheral device.. most printers have this type
USB-mini B: A much smaller connector, for mobile devices.
My Canon S45 has a USB mini-B, nice and standard. Pentax in their wisdom
decided against going for something standard, and then stuck the video out
on the same connector as USB. Oh well.

As an alternative that may be easier, you can apply the gaussian blur
overall, then just erase the lips and eyes on the blur layer.
Sometimes I don't erase completely, but instead set the eraser at 75%
or so.

Ahh, thanks, interesting info, a web page with pic and interchangeability info
would be quite handy me thinks.

On my last trip I didn't envisage requiring the USB cable for my X-Drive as I
had no PC and I had 80GB free (so I thought). After driving some 1000km I
suddenly remembered that I had dumped my music library on it whilst doing some
system maintenance so I only had about 15GB free. Thankfully it was enough
space however if I knew what other cables connected to it I could have found a
computer shop some place and borrowed a suitable cable in order to free up my
drive space.

I felt like a bit of a dickhead :-)

Re: Mirror foam on MX

2004-05-27 Thread graywolf
Well with the foam bad you can chip the mirror if you keep using it. Note:
Personal experience talking here.

However it is a $5 do-it-yourself fix. Basically a 1.5mm wide by 3mm thick piece
of foam the width of the mirror. Pentax USA still had the mirror bumper in stock
a year ago. Your local Pentax distributor may still have them too. But you can
cut a piece of foam to fit. The foam sold by places like

http://www.micro-tools.com/docs.htm
is softer then the Pentax stuff, mouse pad foam is harder. Contact cement works
fine.

Henri Toivonen wrote:

touch it (Why did I have to go and touch it?!).

Is this bad? Should I start to figure something out to replace that
foam? It sure does give a pretty loud CLACK when the mirror flies up.

2004-05-27 Thread graywolf
I thought this was at the elementary school or Junior High level. I do not think
the question would have even been asked at the college level. And many HS have
darkroom facilities nowadays, and the students would be expected to understand
normal care with darkroom chemicals, I mean they work with much more dangerous
stuff in chemistry class, so that would not be a problem.

direct control over it. Though it would be nice if a decent manual
camera was available for the kids to try out their learning on, if
even only under supervision, and have some experience in case they
decide they wished to pursue photography farther. I actually feel that
darkroom or computer graphics work should be held back for a more
advanced course.

We tend to forget that you do not need all those advanced features to

Re: What is the recommended CF card?

2004-05-27 Thread Paul Stenquist
I prefer my 1 gig lexar 40X to my 1 gig sandisk. The lexar is a bit
faster. I reported a problem with the lexar card reader and system
10.3.3 (mac), but lexar has since released a new driver that corrects
it. I'm using USB 1 for downloads (I plan to upgrade to 2 or firewire
soon) but even over USB 1 downloads are okay -- around 15 minutes for a
full card. I tried it once with another card reader on USB2. I think it
came in around 6 minutes. To download my Sandisk card I've had to use
the camera. The Lexar card reader (the cheap one that comes with the 1
gig card) doesn't see it. I have a Sandisk reader for USB 2 that sees
all my cards. I'm eventually going to use that one.

One thing you may consider is creating a second layer in Photoshop and
applying a blur to her skin. I don't have it handy but I'm sure this
technique has been covered in several of the photo mags.

If you can do a reshoot, there's a second option. If you have a 50/1.7 or
1.4 (with *istD), shoot her in open shade with that about f2 making sure to
only focus on the eyes. The majority of her skin will out of focus and

Another late comment (sorry, Guarav),
I generally like this one, but I'm a bit of a sucker for "though the window
or door" shots.

Is that actually a monkey, or is it a part of the wrought iron grating?
It's cool, either way.

The only thing I might say, is that rather than the dome being centred in
the door, partially covered by the grating on the right hand side of the
door, had you been able to move a bit to the left, the dome would have been
a bit more visible, maybe.

OTOH, it may have been impossible to do so, or maybe you just like it better
this way. It's no big thing to me, just a thought. I'd have liked to see
it the other way for comparison, I guess is what I'm saying.

But, all in all, an interesting and well executed photo.
thanks,

Shooting Tonight

2004-05-27 Thread frank theriault
(caution: long rambling post to come - worse than usual)
So, my friend Jennifer:
http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=2355455
http://www.photo.net/photodb/folder?folder_id=397377
and her group are playing at something called the Distillery Jazz Festival
here in Toronto tonight, despite the fact that what they play isn't really
jazz (but most acts at jazz festivals these days don't actually play
jazz...). This fest is a completely gentrified, yuppy-fest in a trendoid
restored and renovated area of town. A few good local acts, nothing
international of note, mostly an excuse to go drink very expensive beer and
spend $30 to watch a few good local interesting bands.

Jennifer is doing a show with two modern dancers that they've been working
on for over 6 months. It will, at the very least be quite interesting, at
best it will be amazing. The music, I know, will be up to her usual
standard.

She wanted me to shoot it, and I said I would. Unfortunately, she said it
was unlikely that I could get a free pass, which I understood, since this
wasn't "her" show, and it was up to the organizers, and neither of us
expected they'd give a free pass to anyone.

Well, turns out she did it, and I'm now sort of the band's "official photog"
(a free one, but one none the less). I was actually going to bail, as much
as I hated to miss it, because that $30 is going to come in handy at GFM
, but when I heard I got a pass, I was happy.

Plus, they gave me permission to shoot any other band playing tonight, along
with non-band activities (ie: crowd shots and the like), and they'll want
to look at my proofs afterward with a view to using them for promo of next
year's fest. So, who knows what might come of this. I mean, it's no big
deal, but one never knows...

So, bought a bunch of Neopan 1600, batteries for the flash (for the outside
milling crowd shots), and I'm going to give the SMC f2.5 135mm a good work
out tonight (I just bought it from Shel, and this is the second time I've
used it). Since this is quite the big production, I'm expecting the
lighting to be orders better than what I'm used to in the smokie bars that
I'm used to shooting her in.

Should be fun. Full report to follow...
cheers,
frank

RE: PAW: Woody Guthrie

2004-05-27 Thread frank theriault
Again, apologies for being so late commenting on this one. As I've
mentioned before, I don't delete PAWs if I get behind (if I do, it's an
accident), and I do try to comment on every one, eventually.

I was intrigued, looking at the subject line of this one for the last week
or so. I wondered if it were a restored vintage photo or something. Now
that I read the body of your post, Gonz, I do recall hearing of the play;
sounds really interesting. Hopefully it will end up on the road and in
Toronto some day. I don't know as much about him as I should, but I really
admire his music, politics and life.

And, to find that you mention me in the same sentence as him is an
(undeserved) honour. Funny, but my roomate made an offhand comment about me
being like the "Miles Davis of photographers" - again undeserved - but I
knew what she meant. I've thought that what I do is sort of like jazz -
improvising and interpreting, but I like the Woody Guthrie thought about as
much, because of the human element of it.

Anyway, thanks. And, as for mentioning me in the same breath as Shel, well,
I'll talk to you later about ~that~ one!

So, the photo (I figured I better get around to that ). Like it a lot.
You really captured a moment there! Off kilter and all, he really looks
like a teetering drunk on the top of a freight car (riding the rails has
long been a fantasy of mine - one that will go unfulfilled I'm afraid). If
I hadn't known it was a play, I'd have chastized you for the obvious
photoshopping of the background , but one way or the other, you're right,
it looks cool. Comp is just wonderful, as is exposure.

All in all, a terrific photograph, Gonz! Thanks for posting it and allowing
me to ramble on a bit...

BTW, are there any copyright issues that you know of? In other words, did
you ask permission to take photos? I always ask, and more often than not,
they say no (I always respect them). Once, an usher kept giving me the evil
eye during intermission, because some jerk took a flash photo, and usher
thought it was me (after he said "no"). I actually went up to him and told
him it wasn't me, and showed him that I didn't have a flash, and I wouldn't
have used one at a performance, but I don't think he believed me. I mean,
why would I ask, and then not respect their wishes. Anyway, just curious if
you asked.

cheers,
frank

Well, not a pic of him But a pic of a play about him. For those who
don't recognize the name, Woody Guthrie was a folk song composer that wrote
songs about everyday life in small town America mainly during the
depression, he is kind of a musical version of photographers like Shel &
Frank, capturing special moments, but in music instead of pictures. Here
is a nice bio:

supposed to be on top of a train inebriated. I liked the backdrop and the

Re: What is the recommended CF card?

2004-05-27 Thread Bruce Dayton
Hello Mark,

I have 3 Lexar 512mb 40x WA cards and one Dane Electric 512mb nothing
special card. Using the supplied Jumpshot reader from Lexar to
download to the computer, there is a minor speed increase compared to
the Dane-Electric using a Sandisk reader.

However, in camera (*istD), there is a very marked difference in write
speed to the card. I only use the Dane-Electric as a last resort.
The buffer writes seem to be 2-3x faster on the Lexars. That can mean
the difference between missed shots and not.

HTH,

Bruce

I think the seller does not know much if anything about camera
equipment. They are clearly labeled as brands other than Pentax, yet
he still thinks they are Pentax. He mentions they are clean, and have
no Fungus, but I am assuming you asked him specifically about them.
I'd say chances are decent that his approximation of the quality of the
lenses and equipment would not match up with your experienced eye.

RE: Darkroom or Digital for beginners

2004-05-27 Thread Butch Black
I don't remember from the original post how old the students are, nor the
economic strata the community or town is in. Also, what is the goal of the
class? A class to foster photography as a creative outlet for kids will have
different needs compared to one geared to photojournalism, or classic
portraiture.

I got started in photography when my next door neighbor showed his son and
me how to develop and print B&W negs. Once learned, I was hooked. However, I
think the reality is that most of those kids will never own a serious film
camera. So my vote goes to emphasizing the digital darkroom. If they have
the money to also set up a wet darkroom, so much the better, but not at the
expense of the digital one. If they are looking to build a photography
curriculum then classes in B&W and classic portraiture would be helped by a
wet darkroom.

I do agree that unless the class is strictly a "let's develop your eye"
class, they need to have a camera that can be run in a mode other then
program. Fully manual would be best, although you can accomplish the same
thing with a camera that allows AV and/or TV modes. My experience as a
photofinisher makes me believe that the majority of people taking pictures
have absolutely no clue what is going on and are lost if they don't have a
program mode. To learn photography you need to have a basic understanding of
what the various functions do in regards to the final image and how changing
those functions will change the image. This, IMHO, requires an adjustable
camera.

So my suggestion for setting it up. A decent film scanner, 6(+) color
printer, SLR's shooting slide film, Adobe Photoshop. I'm suggesting slide
film because it will show good or bad exposure better and it makes it easier
to decide which ones to scan and print. If there is an E-6 lab in town, see
if they will give a student discount for class members.

RE: Will I ever use my MX again?

2004-05-27 Thread Haller, Thomas
Hello again!

To respond to some responses...

> "Why did you pick the 10D..."
>
I didn't pick the C*n*n 10D, my brother lent it to me and I haven't given it
back! He wasn't really using it, and he liked my pictures so much he's
letting me keep it for as long as I keep using it. With it he lent a 16-35mm
L lens and a 35-300mm cheapo which turns out to take fine pictures racked
out to 300mm. And the IstD wasn't out yet, either. I was thinking of getting
a C*n*n S50 at the time so he lent me his 10D to "play with digital" to see
if I would like it.

> "Are you selling..."
>
No, no, no, I'm not selling my MXs or M lens, at least not yet. They have
way to much sentimental value, and for what I've paid for the stuff I'd not
get back any appreciable percentage of what I paid, so why bother. I don't
or didn't plan on not using the Pentax stuff, I've got two "ready to go"
camera bags, one filled with my day-to-day Pentax stuff and the other with
the 10D gear, but when I consider what I would have to go through to get a
picture, I grab the bag with the 10D in it every time.

> "PhotoCD sucks..."
>
No argument from me! I was thinking my transition to digital would be a nice
slide-scanner, but I kept reading about problems with Kodachrome slides and
some wouldn't do B+W well and so forth. So I waited and waited... I still
want to get one to turn all my old slides into digital files, but I can
never spare the money. (It must be those darn ink cartridges!!)

Thanks for listening!

Need help w/portrait

Well, its not really a portrait. A woman in our lab received an award today, so I
recorded the presentation with the *ist D and DA 16-45. The rtf flash was all I had

I was going to print an enlargement for her. Is there anything I can do in Photoshop

Help me out here, gang.
