Here we have the opposite problem. Some developers want to create an
artificial lake close to the flight path of our airport. The airport

Re: Attn DA 12-24 owners - Query re filters

2006-12-07 Thread Patrick Genovese
>> It's hard to find a filter that is as flare resistant as the lens.

I agree with you 100% on that argument in fact I sometimes take the
filter off when shooting in situations where flare is likely to be a
problem (e.g. backlit situations). OTOH having some protection for the
front element allows me to leave the lens in the camera bag (shoulder
bag) without the lens cap and simply rely on the lens hood to provide
some physical separation.

Ok a $100 filter is not exactly disposable but its a much lower risk
than a lens. I have some SMC filters and have used them in this
method for ages and have never damaged a filter.

In the UK, the sheer existence of an extended warranty (implying that the
insurer is pretty sure that nothing will go wrong in the warranty period)
pretty much ensures that it is not neccessary, due to the way our consumer
protection law works.

One person I know bought two extended warranties, which guaranteed your fee
back if there was no claim. In one, the insurance company went bust. In the
second, the retailer that the warranty was bought through went bust and the
insurance company refused to honour it.

I wouldn't touch one with a dead Norwegian Blue.

My guess is pretty close to Paul's. A 22 Mpix sensor has been
suggested before, so if that's still in production it will have my

As for appeal... Throw in some weather sealing, and I believe at least

Because when some folks pronounce Berne, and make a place of origin out

It's a common problem, and easy to fix. There's a tiny mirror sitting
on a flexible metal holder behind the aperture window, reflecting the
light into the prism. This may either have fallen off, or just be out
of adjustment. If it's fallen off, it's in there somewhere, and can
be glued back on. In either case, it needs to be adjusted by bending
the "stalk" it sits on until you see the aperture ring in the
viewfinder.

In other words, it shouldn't add much to the cost of a CLA.

Re: Extended warranty

2006-12-07 Thread John Forbes
Did you compare the cost of the extended warranty with the cost of the
repair?

As a general rule, never insure against any risk you can afford to pay
for. Over your life you will spend two or three times as much on premiums
as you would on repairs and replacements. Who do you think is paying for
all those big offices, large salaries and expensive cars, not to mention
dividends to shareholders?

Warren Buffet, the world's most successful investor, is into insurance in
a big way. That says something.

I insure my house, my car, against professional liability, and for medical
matters in North America. That's quite enough.

Considering that a 1Ds is the size and weight of a 645 SLR (Not sure
exactly about the Pentax 645, but the Mamiya ZD is smaller apart from
the prism and about the same weight as a 1Ds), your argument doesn't
hold a lot of water on that front. Also there are potential technical
problems with a FF DSLR on K mount, the light path perpendicularity
issue for corner performance is impacted by K mount's smallish throat
size, 645 mount doesn't have that issue.

I carry my Mamiya M645 fairly often, but it's smaller and lighter than a
P645 (No motordrive).

$3K would have me dumping my Mamiya kit and getting a 645D.

Re: Any purchase an extended warranty on their K10D

2006-12-07 Thread Adam Maas
I get them on used kit and stuff with potential expensive failures
outside the manufacturers warranty period, unless the Manufacturer has a
2 year or longer warranty (Pentax is 2 years in Canada).

The sole exception to that is Future Shop's CSP, which is worth it for
the no-hassle policy. Normally you have to take stuff to the
manufacturers warranty depot if problems happen outside of the return
period, but with CSP you just take it back to Future Shop and they deal
with it. (the exception is computer hardware as warranty-authorized
service depots are common). This is also the only good reason to shop at
Future Shop.

I was thinking more along the lines of the 5D.

If Pentax build the 645D like Canon do their 1D cameras (cast frame
etc.) it'll be a big beast.

You are =really= fortunate to be in striking distance

Welcome, Ambal,
You have put up a really nice collection and it's obvious you've done
some traveling. =)
Very incidentally, Aspen Lake is near Aspen, but its actual name is
Maroon Lake. The peaks above, Maroon Bells. Have been there five or six
times, but always in the fall.
If your pockets are deep enough (how deep we don't know at this point)
you may want to wait 'til around March '07 for the new DA USM's. I've
read we may expect a 16~50 f/2.8 ED AL (IF), 50~135 f/2.8 ED (IF) and a
60~250 f/4 ED (IF).

Tragic, but not as much of a problem as it might seem. The "rules
of the road" (i.e. traffic pattern entry/exit procedures, radio calls,
position reporting) is a mandatory part of training. The only real
problem is when people get complacent, lazy, or out-of-practice. If
people are proficient and responsible, untowered fields are completely
safe. Chances very good that one or both of the accident planes were at
fault in this regard.

Flying a small plane is as safe as you make it, because the vast
majority of the time YOU get to kill you... not the other guy as in
automotive traffic.

The 1Ds is a lot slower than the 1D. Also the 5D with a grip is about the same
size. But the 645's are a lot closer in build to a 1Ds than a 5D (Which is
fairly light in build, being essentially a FF Canon 30D).

Interesting question. If I were traveling, I'd probably have taken the
picture anyway. Could still be useful for some purposes.

If the location was some place nearby that I can visit any time I'd
wait for better light.

I've just been working on a project for a client and found myself being

It looks like a pretty spot but maybe just not the best time of day/angle of

little flare, could be cropped out, IMO.Overall I find the composition

Re: PESO - Rugged Coast

2006-12-07 Thread Bruce Dayton
For me, there is a quality to this light - some of the harshness
emphasizes the feeling there. I have a bunch of shots the other
direction that don't look harsh, but have a totally different kind of
feel to them.

There is also the learning factor - applying techniques and seeing how
they affect the image, etc. Shooting backlit and dealing with flare
is an example. Some very cool shots can be obtained, but the lighting
is very tricky.

I'll post one or two of the others up for all to see. They may be
more acceptable to many. I needed to hear the reaction to this one as
it helps me learn more. I really appreciate your comments and others
as well.

Seems like they are trying to unload these
older leftover models now.

How about that kit lens : Pentax SMC FAJ 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 Autofocus
Zoom Lens?
Is that a APS or FF lens? Curious be because 28 isnt very wide
on APS now is it?

The optimist in me hopes that your friend found a sales person who
actually genuinely cared that she got the product best for her purpose.
The cynic in me thinks that maybe that camera had an rewards program
attached to the sale for the salesperson.

Back when I was a drone in the camera retail industry, manufacturer
spiffs were commonplace and would sway some less scrupulous sales
person's recommendation to a customer as to what camera would be the
best for them. Are spiffs still common in camera retail?

That's the base model film kit lens. As is indicated by the FA J designation.
There's only 3 FA J lenses, the 28-80 and 75-300 film kit lenses and the 18-35
ultra-wide which was also used as the original kit for the *istD. These are the
only FF K mount lenses which lack an aperture ring.

Here we go. Something to chew on.

Several years ago, I went on a shoot with Don Nelson, who worked for
Pentax, and some newspaper guy from North Carolina. We had decided to
meet in a little town in Tennessee near the NC border, to hike in and
photograph Mouse Creek Falls.

We arose early, way before dawn, grabbed up all our gear and drove to
the trailhead. It was somewhere in the mid-teens, Fahrenheit-wise, and
the trail was up a pretty steep angle. The falls were three miles into
the woods.

It was rocky and cold there in the NC mountains, but we made it all the
way in, only to realize that the light was absolutely wrong; we should
have waited until afternoon. We set up and shot anyway, -we'd come in,
and bygawd we were gonna take pictures- but I've never really liked the
results I got, even using a P67.

Now, like everyone else here, I shoot quite a bit. The overwhelming
majority of the photos I get come under the category of record-keeping;
I'm in a place, so I get shots of that place. The quality of the light
is not as important as the proof I was there, I think.

But if you want to see me excited, or as excited as I ever get, give me
some good light, and I'm all over it. I start looking for a subject that
fits the light, and the whole magic of photography thing strikes me anew.

You have to be wary of becoming too dependent on golden light. When I
mention "good" light, it may not be that perfect warmth of the
early/late hour. What I mean is light that is interesting, whether it's
dusky or rainy or foggy or something different entirely. It's one of
those things that I know when I see it. There are subjects which will do
justice to that particular quality of light, if only we can find them.

Obviously, the best times are when I'm somewhere special, whether it's
my backyard or Paris, or wherever, =and= the light's good.

That's when it's fun.

Did I answer the question?

William's right. It's Bernese Mountain Dog, and it's frequently
shortened to "Berner". Common mispronunciations include "Burmese"
Mountain Dogs. On one occasion I ran with that gaffe and said they got
their names from the fighting "Burmese" monks who trained them to guard
Buddhist temples, and that they are the only breed known that could
actually be trained to fight in Bando Tiger form.

Berner Sennenhund is the original name. They are closely related to the
Greater Swiss, as well as somewhat related to the St. Bernard, Great
Pyrenees, and Newfoundland, all of whom trace their roots to the
Molosser dogs of the Romans. The breed was developed in the canton of
Berne, Switzerland and is named after the canton as well as the "senner"
or cattleman he worked for, and "hund" (dog). The breed were originally
working dogs, used principally as carters, herders/drovers, and watch
dogs.

Unfortunately I will not be able to do much with it for several

Will take another 5 or 6 weeks before I can

Anyway, first K10D impressions are positive, love the SR.

Re: *istD kits down to $499 New

2006-12-07 Thread P. J. Alling
Nope, not wide at all, (like 43mm on a FF film camera), and the FAJ is
FF. They're unloading a kit they put together fairly cheaply at a
relatively high price.

No, it was a very unlucky fall at the river Rhine shore.
I fell onto a block of concrete with my left thigh (femur),
double fracture, just below the hip joint ...

RE: *istD kits down to $499 New

2006-12-07 Thread J. C. O'Connell
High price? Wasnt the istD originally
over $1000 for just the body? This is
about $450 for a new *istD body and
about $50 for all the rest including the
FAJ lens by my estimate. How do you
know they got them (the bodies) cheap?

K10D and A*135mm 1:1.8 at 1/20s

2006-12-07 Thread DagT
I´m not a very eager pixel peeper but I think this is worth showing:
http://foto.no/cgi-bin/bildegalleri/vis_bilde.cgi?id=277182

Handheld at 1/20s, ISO1600 and underexposed one step. Processed RAW
to jpg in the camera with standard settings, no sharpening or noise
reduction afterwards. Stored with save for web in PS CS2 with
quality 92 to get below 300K.

Yes, you can see some lines in the noise at the right side of the
picture, but not much. A 1:1 version may be found by clicking at the
second small thumb below the main one.
