>I'm simply asking

I have no experience of in-body SR, and I only have experience of one
lens with in-lens IS (20-200 2.8 L IS). From where I'm standing, the I
like the IS because I can see with my own eyes that it's working,
although it does use battery power, and the lens is what some would
consider big and heavy. I normally carry a camera weighing 24 lbs so to
me the IS lens is a relief to shoulder about. I like the IS and have it
switched on as a default. It does what it says on the tin, and I can't
fault it. Had it since summer of 2004 and it has not skipped a beat. I
also have a 2X converter but use it only extremely rarely as I don't
like the image degredation.

I don't have any other IS lenses, although I sometimes wish the 24-70 I
use a lot had it. I find no need for IS on wider lenses. I'm hoping to
pick up a 24mm lens in the not-too-distant, and if I had a choice of one
with IS or one without, I'd pick the latter.

If the Darkside offers in-body IS, I would guess that it will be in the
prosumer range and I have no plans for any more bodies within a couple
of years. I am waiting for a fix to full-frame vignetting, and then I
anticipate a full-frame body by about 2010.

K10D and long exposure times

2007-01-29 Thread jim
My K10D takes a long time (10-20 seconds) to come up with preview image and
saving to SD card after taking a long exposure (all above 15 seconds).
Camera was in hyper manual mode and I was guessing the exposure times.
Is this normal or is there some user error involved (ie I don't know what I is
doing).
I noticed this while taking pics of a comet (yes finally saw it).
pics were taken with the original firmware. Haven't tried the updated firmware
yet.

Apologies if this has been discussed earlier as i missed it and am to lazy to
find it :)

Re: K10D and long exposure times

With long exposures, the noise reduction applied by te camera will
slow it down quite much (same with the D) and BTW will degrade quality
at the same time.

Deactivate the NR when shooting long exposure is really really mandatory.

Hi Mark,

I've used ExifUtils for this. It certainly allows you to set camera
make and model, focal length, exposure and ISO and much more.
www.hugsan.com/EXIFutils/

Mind you, it's a command line utility so may not be ideal for some.

Thanks for the comments, Marnie and Bruce. Much appreciated. This
was one of several attempts, and probably the best of the bunch (not
saying much, really). The perspective was a big problem. I felt like
the camera needed to be a bit higher, but I'm *only* six feet tall and
didn't have a tripod with me. Maybe I'll take another crack at it
next fall before it gets quite so high.

Thanks again.

I've been pretty much away -
My friend Nora died on January 11th at 89 -
We had been friends for over 40 years.
NOt unexpected, but sad for the survivors, nonetheless.

She was sent off in royal style, in a very touching fashion.
Her kids asked me to take photos of the proceedings, the
party celebrating her, the burial and the interior of the house
before things were taken down and stored or sold or passed on
to children, grand children and great grand children... not that I
had not already taken many pictures there - there were specific
things that were especially treasured they wanted to remember as
she had arranged them.

She would have preferred scattered ashes to burial, but these things
are for those left behind and she tacitly consented.

As it happens, the cemetery is the very one which Nora took me to
in 1978 to point out the "No Permanent Planting" sign that is in my book.
Alas, it has been replaced with "No dogs allowed in Cemetery".

Aha, I misunderstood re previous comments about Nora.

Nice one, ann. Though I would have preferred that more of the dinosaur on

Catching the cat there was fortuitous and it was makes it, naturally.

I don't think the B&W adds much, actually.

Trying to sneak one past the complainers that you do similar things too
often, huh? :-) My advice? Never give up what you are good at, even when you
branch out and experiment. Experimenting is more prone to failure, although
definitely a good idea. So go back and touch base with what you know you can
do,
after experimenting. To reassure yourself, if nothing else. But also just to
keep producing good stuff. The world can use good stuff. And switching back
and forth may give you insights into experimenting -- carrying some of the
same
skills over into approaching new things. Also, just because you are good at
what you do, and you *have* done more than one type of thing. One should
never give up what one is good at. IMHO.

Just my .02. Totally unsolicited.

I moved my computer and printers to the basement last year. Prior to
that, everything had been set up in the top floor bedroom.
This was a house with forced air heat and air conditioning too, but
the difference in local "climate" was enough to cause havoc with my
printer (epson R1800). The printer went from never clogging to
clogging with an annoying regularity with no change in frequency of
use.
The printer worked much better in the upstairs room which I would say

The sensor size is so close to what the Pentax DSLRs use,

PESO - snow geese and moon

2007-01-29 Thread Christian
I was visiting my parents this weekend in Fenwick Island, Delaware,
about 5 miles from the Atlantic beaches and some really nice wetlands.
Unfortunately, my visit was to help my dad pump about 200 gallons of
water out of their crawl space... with a Sears 6 gallon wet-vac. It
pretty much took the whole day of crawling on my belly under their house
when I really wanted to be crawling in the sand shooting shore birds.

When I finished I looked up to see thousands of snow geese flying
overhead. Grabbed the ol' camera, 300mm lens and 1.4x TC and started
shooting. The light was fading so most of the images are crap but I
thought I'd post this one for compositional reasons.

they don't cut your pay.

That is a real common scenario in the states. I worked for one company
that reduced my time to one hour per-day, thinking I guess that I would
quit and they would not have to pay unemployment. Might have worked here
in NC, but in Michigan I just went down an filed a forced quit.

Thanks Angel!

The pricing is pretty close to what I expected. I imagine that once
it hits the streets, after the introductory offer, the pricing will
stick around that $199 intro offer level.

Doesn't matter much ... My order is in already. :-)

licensing programs will also be in effect—please see

PESO - The End Revisited - Art Show

2007-01-29 Thread Eactivist
I mentioned a while back that I entered a local art show at the beginning of
Dec. and sold a photograph. My first ever. :-)

The show was mainly pottery, jewelry, and painting, and about only four
photographers. One guy used medium format and did landscapes -- breathtakingly
beautiful. Well, he was in his twenties and willing to lug that large thing
around, thus I barely envied him. (Barely ;-))

So I was glad to sell one. And it was my biggest and highest priced one too.
Also my most "artified," the only photographic I put in the show. I was
wondering how that would go over, and evidentially at least one person really
liked the idea.

I also mentioned it was The End that I showed on list, oh, about 6-8 months
ago.

Several liked it back then as a straight photo (well, not totally straight,
I had B&W converted it and left some areas color). But I also got a fair
amount of technical criticism on it, not sharp enough. So I went back to
reshoot
it and found they had changed the sign, which really nixed reshooting it.

So I artified it more to cover up any lack of sharpness and because I had a
mental image of the way I would like it to be. Actually this is still not the
way I'd like it to be -- I'd like it even more B&W as in almost a combo of
high and low key, etc. But it comes closer than the original did. Someday I
will rework it again.

Tim, or someone, said they'd like to see what sold. So here it is:

http://members.aol.com/eactivist/PAWS/pages/theend2.htm

It was shot when my mother was ill. I also included in the show my Mom grief
series, the Mohave Joshua Tree, the Yosemite B&W/color combo shot, and a few
others I've shown previously on list.

http://members.aol.com/eactivist/PAWS/pages/joy.htm

Comments are not really necessary unless you want. Because, other than
newbies, most of you have seen them before.

But no yucking, please. I know a lot of you like you photography straight up
-- no water, no ice, no mixing.

Thanks for answering, William.
No, I never took out the screen.
I dont' tamper much too much with this advanced device :-)
I think the camera got a small bump a few days ago - nothing that made any
marks, but enough for me to notice.
Perhaps the screen did move.
I dont understand you last question.
I can see in the view finder, that focus is off when I get the red light
confirmation.
Is what you are asking is if the screen says unsharp and the files are
sharp?
No - the files are unsharp too.

Very nice!. Beautiful V.
Appears possible that the final composition was achieved through
cropping. I do it all the time, for that matter, but if you have a
scosh more room, it may benefit from being slightly opened up.
Moon focus is great! Geese, understandably, slightly soft which doesn't
really detract that much.

GESO - walking about with the DA50-200

2007-01-29 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Just for fun, a few snaps testing the DA50-200 on the K10D between
cloudbursts yesterday:

   http://www.gdgphoto.com/walkinabout/

A few of those are about 30% crops from the full frame straight out
of the K10D. Exposure with this lens is very nearly right on the
money most of the time, it focuses in pretty close too. A few of the
shots I made included using it with the Pentax Rear Converter 2x-S as
well, which did well enough but for anything that long I really need
a tripod to be happy.

A very nice lens at the price I paid .. with the current rebate offer
I got it for just barely over $175.

enjoy
Godfrey

PS: I'm going to sell the F100-300/4.5-5.6 and the Pentax-A Rear
Converter 2x-S. Maybe even the FA135/2.8 IF once I do a little more
testing and comparison against the DA50-200. I hardly ever use them;
if the DA50-200's performance holds up reasonably well against the
FA135, it will be just fine as my long lens option.

On dpreview forum, there are a couple threads on the subject if you're
confident enough.
If you remove a couple screws you can tweak the AF.

Dunno where those screws are.

Thanks, Marnie. Several people have mentioned wanting more room. I
cropped a little on the left and bottom to remove some partial birds.
In hindsight I guess I could just clone them out easily enough which
would open the composition a bit more.

I saw a website a while back that dealt with adjusting the AF sensor
position in the istD, but I didn't bookmark it.
I recall the adjustment itself was pretty simple, take off the bottom cover
and there are 3 screws for position adjust.
Anyway, I don't expect Pentax would charge overmuch to adjust it, and
honestly, with the number of shots you have on that camera, a CLA might not
be a bad idea.

Thanks, Jack. I did crop slightly to remove a half bird from the left
and another half bird from the bottom. A co-worker said more room would
be nice too. I held still on the moon and the birds flew past too fast
for the 1/160 shutter speed. I think the plan was right, but my
execution was lacking... If I had tracked the birds, the moon would be OOF.

LOL. Counting grad school I have been working at a university for 21

that I was better suited for academic life. I took a 20% pay cut to

Thanks, Bruce. There were what seemed like 20 thousand of those guys
flying overhead. I saw a bunch that were going to cross in front of the
moon and just sorta held focus on the moon and released the shutter when
they were framed right.

Earlier in the day, whilst running an errand I passed by the bay where
the snow geese were congregating. Too bad I couldn't have spent some
time shooting them bobbing in the water or landing/taking off etc. It's
an annual event but the afternoon light Saturday was spectacular.

Re: GESO - walking about with the DA50-200

2007-01-29 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
thanks Paul.

I'd heard so many reports of the "average" build quality that I was a
little surprised when I received it ... This example is a nicely
finished, smooth operating lens. It's not a metal body Limited for
sure, but it feels good and works very nicely.

The performance seems very good to excellent. These were all taken
hand held, just to try it out a bit, but normally I shoot with a
tripod support for exposures at or near 200mm, I expect it will
perform even better that way. Image stabilization only helps so much.
I will do some more rigorous testing against the FA135.

Well, the two most obvious things to do would be:

 1) Try browsing to www.exif.org

or

 2) Type "EXIF specifications" into a Google search.

Either of these would have produced for you the answer you want;
the very first result from Google is a pointer to www.exif.org

We had the annual obedience trial at the old dog club this weekend.
My little Rottie puppy won a PCD title in three trials, and qualified in
all four trials.

That's great, Bill. Congratulations.

Pentax's sensor-based SR is better. Nikon and Canon are evil and
covering up for their inability to produce the in-camera based system by
putting it down and telling the public that the lens based system is
better. Does that help validate your choice of camera brand?

My point is: why do you care what some crappy reviewer has to say? It
seems to me that users of any camera brand have this massive inferiority
complex and need their purchases validated. My digi-rebel using friend
constantly "proves" to me that the noise on his camera is less than
mine. He is proving to me all the time that the 17-40 L lens is
"better" than the 16-35 L because he owns the 17-40. He also loves to
prove that his APS-sensored rebel is "better" than a full-frame 5D, etc,
etc.

Personally, I use what I got and just try to make pictures.

RE: Camera based SR vs. lens based IS?

2007-01-29 Thread Tim Øsleby
I have absolutely no problem choosing camera brand Christian. I'm a Fuji man
and will be forever.

Seriously. My decision is made. I'll just have to wait a couple of weeks
until my account is refilled, and off course until Pentax is able to refill
the Norwegian market. I might by from France, I've found a good price there.
That I haven't decided yet.

I'm not trying to prove that Pentax is best. I'm just provoked because
reviewers seem to simply echo the Canon marketing department without
thinking. Why am I provoked? Because reviewers are influential, reviewers
and the camera pushers in the shops are those who decides what average Joe
buys. I want my brand to survive. Perhaps I'm a fanboy?

Tim
Mostly harmless (just plain Norwegian)
