Samsung GX-10 firmware v.1.11 released

2007-04-02 Thread Roman
Samsung decided to follow the trend in the digital camera world and made
their firmware upgrade available for manual download and installation by
the end user. As expected, new features are similar to Pentax K10D
firmware updates 1.10 and 1.11:

* Wireless mode for built-in flash
* AF button returns previously selected AF point to center
* Changing ISO sensitivity by front or rear dial
* Green button in Tv and Av modes
* Ability to choose which dial changes Tv and Av in Program mode
* Green button returns built-in flash compensation to its default value
* Memory card volume is displayed in “Format” dialog

Follow the instructions on the Samsung Camera website to download and
install firmware update
.
Thanks to PentaxLife forum user 1r2R1
 for information.

Re: PESO: Wild geese

2007-04-02 Thread Bruce Dayton
Both are close to great, but just not quite. The first is a bit
better, but could be really great with just a little more DOF so the
upper bird were as sharp as the lower bird.

The second shot is hampered by less than nice bokeh and compete color
of the dry grasses - maybe selectively desaturating them a bit would
help.

Re: GOSE: My first soccer game

2007-04-02 Thread Bruce Dayton
Thanks for sharing the information. Hopefully you are aware that the
focus point selection is independent of AF-S or AF-C. You can choose
a single AF point and then use AF-C. Or maybe you were having
problems with needing different points rapidly and couldn't switch
them fast enough and the All points missed too many times?

I don't shoot soccer so much - and if I do, it is younger kids up to
teens. I have tended to use a medium/long zoom and just miss the
really close shots or go for a less than full body. Sometimes just a
tight shot can be pretty cool. Certainly one problem is that the
other side of the field could use about a 300 or so and the near side
could use about a 35. Big range.

I look forward to your next shoot.

Walt, here is a bit of anecdotal evidence to you. One of the guys in the
local camera club has exactly this combo - Bessa camera (one without
built-in viewfinder) and 15/4.5 lens. The lens is tiny, the outcome is
tremendous. It is very well corrected (very rectilinear) and it is very
sharp. Lovely piece of gear if you ask me.

Re: OT Planes and cameras

2007-04-02 Thread Stan Halpin
Best strategy is to carry as much of your electronic gear (including
camera(s), charger(s), batteries, phone, charger, conversion plugs,
etc etc) with you on the plane as you can manage. They may hand
inspect your bag, but you'll be there to watch the process. Actually,
it has been many trips since they last gave my camera+electronics bag
a second glance. They are much more nervous about wires & strange
objects in checked bags, and those screeners have less practice in
sorting out typical cameras etc from more bizarre/threatening stuff.

Shel and Godders-

Thanks for taking the time to show me some alternative solutions. I
like both of your different takes, I also like that you were able to
brighten the whole thing up without losing the cloud detail. I
fiddled around for a while this evening, but was not able to duplicate
our results. I can brighten it up some, but by the time I start to
lose cloud detail the water in the lake is still too dark. But that
may be the price I have to pay for using free software :) So I will
have to mess around with this some more again tomorrow evening and see
what I can come up with. Thanks again.

Hmmm. I'm wending my way towards Vegas; I'm typing this in a motel room

and Zion the day after. I'll have to look up Valley of Fire on the map.

Re: WebGallery:Barrett-JacksonCollectorCarAuctions2007WestPalmBeach...

2007-04-02 Thread Adam Maas
David,

All bluster aside, JCO's right on the technical side. The dpi listed in
the file is irrelevant to the display on a monitor, where only the
actual resolution of the file matters, dpi only matters on print output,
where it determines the physical size of the printout.

As most displays are around 80-100ppi (72ppi is archaic and hasn't been
the case since the mid-90's and the death of single-resolution
monitors), a 1200 pixel image will be around 12-15" wide on most modern
monitors (depending on the actual running resolution).

I said this was just a temporary quick and dirty, higher
image quality posting to a group, the rest

going to do something more permanent or important,
I would use multible image size photos and bigger
thumbnails,,,This was a just a "stock" photoshop web gallery
automatic type deal to make it easier to post a bunch of

2007-04-02 Thread Walter Hamler
Thank you JayT for such a powerful testimony for your mom and yourself. My
prayers will be for both of you!!
Me and my brothers have had to have my mom put in an assisted living center
late last year. We thought sure it would kill her. But, she has actually
improved and seems to like it and the company of others. She will be 85 in
June. It is hard when they get that old.

God Bless!!

2007-04-02 Thread J. C. O'Connell
right, so why bother to make them smaller
for inadequate systems running low rez displays?
I think there is some confusion here, this
wasnt/isnt a typical web gallery designed
for general population, this was posted
for a specific group of people, the Pentax
mailing list to be specific, and this
group should have, in my opinion a higher
spec of computer than average for viewing
photos, and should have a greater appreciation
than average of image quality that a 1200
pixel image affords vs say 800 or 1024
size images. Whatever, hey they are my
photos after all and I am the only one
who saw them full size, so I am in a better
position to say if the loss at 800 or
1024 was tolerable or not to me. Whatever...

For a web gallery, yes.. Who gives a shit, John? I print them at full
res, but the web galleries are designed to fit on ANY monitor (hence 800

pixels on the longest side). There were some cool cars in your gallery
but my laptop (free from work; don't tell me to upgrade it) has a max
resolution of 1024x768. Honestly, the fact that they are jpegs has
degraded the image enough, so again, who gives a shit?

Do the math, it aint anywhere near
240ppi, the data you are using/reading/believing is
incorrect...The screen would have to be only
5" wide to get 240ppi with a 1200pixel wide image.
I dont know anybody using that size screen or
screen resolutions so extremely high that the displayed
image would only be that wide on a typical 19" screen.

I'm getting my numbers from your files John. Here's a basic Photoshop
lesson.

Open a file in PS, this one will do:

Go to Image>Image Size... You will note:

Pixel Dimensions
Width: 1200 pixels
Height: 801 pixels

Document Size:
Resolution: 240 pixels/inch (that's pixels per inch, or ppi)

As I said, 240 ppi is a print resolution, 72 ppi is plenty enough for
web
images.

PEOW:Tribute/Farwell to Mom

2007-04-02 Thread Jay Taylor
PDML'rs,
Definitely a great deal of sadness here with the Taylor family as we
prepare to bid farewell to my Mom.
She would be 88 years old on April 20th, but we are all but certain
that she will not be able to celebrate this years birthday. Unable to
recover from a colonectomy surgery performed in February coupled with
Aortic Stenosis, her condition has continued to deteriorate over the
past several weeks.
She had not been eating and drinking enough to sustain herself and
was back in the hospital within a couple weeks after surgery for
dehydration. With her fluids stabilized the hospital had informed us
that they pretty much had done all they could do for her short of
inserting a feeding tube which she would not want nor allow. The best
thing that we could do for her is bring her home to be comfortable
with hospice care.
Fortunately, we had just bought a new house last summer with a
"Mother-in-Law" unit in the downstairs portion where my mom and
brother were able to move in with us. So, the three of us have been
caring for her (my wife works from home) since her discharge about
six weeks ago.
At first we were hopeful that being back at home would give her the
motivation and comfort to have better chance of recovery. She had
been eating a little more and drinking Ensure protein drinks regularly.
But she was still not taking in enough nutrients to sustain herself.
It seemed that she had just lost all interest in food altogether
except for maybe chocolates and a few select fruits. At first she was
walking around OK even by herself with the help of the walker. But
the last couple weeks she's gotten progressively worse to the point
where we could no longer even take her to the bathroom via wheelchair
because she started passing out from just sitting on the commode.
These past few days have been very difficult for all of us knowing
that she does not have much time left here with us. Though we do have
comfort in knowing that as a true disciple and saint of our Lord
Jesus and that a very special place in heaven awaits her.
She is truly a very special person. Loved by many who know her and
even those who've only had a chance to meet. You see, she is a very
loving and humble human being. I can never remember her saying a
negative or cruel thing about any single person in her life. She is
one of the most self-less persons I have ever known. Always willing
to forsake her needs for those of her children and grandchildren and
even people she didn't know very well at all. She has taught me so
much about life by the example that she lived each and every day; the
most important of which is Love. But if it hadn't been for her taking
me to church as a young boy and teaching me about Jesus I don't
think I'd be here to this day. I could have easily ended up like
many of my peers in jails, institutions or dead.
It' really hard at the moment to really reflect on just how much she
really means to me. I remain hopeful of better days ahead. Here is a
photo I took of us shortly after her surgery:
http://i.pbase.com/o6/87/63987/1/76532119.31qAeDgY.IMGP0707.jpg
If you are so inclined, please pray that her passing will be
comforted by the Creator and those who love her.

Thank you,
John James Taylor, Jr. (aka JayT)

Lovely scene, composition, and exposure!

I don't understand why you had to do this as a 30-shot
stitched pano, though; judging from the trees and
grasses, it's not that high a falls.

Also, why is your Photobucket name Sherman?

Rick

P.S. I've read you're having a drought. Did you
remember to turn the water off at the end of your
shoot? ;-)

Re: GESO: Photos taken in near total darkness...

2007-04-02 Thread Rick Womer
Yes. It was a program in the living room of an old
Philadelphia mansion. I metered the light beforehand,
and found I could use 1/60th at f/1.7 with P3200 in my
PZ-1p. Then, the organizer decided to turn the lights
down for a better mood...

The next time, I brought along a subtle (but very
effective) 75W flood on a stand, which allowed me to
use my FA 24-90 instead of the 50/1.7 wide open.

I should post some of those shots as PESOs
someday...but the scanning is a pain!

These are very nice indeed, regardless of the
circumstances!

Nearly. Insert in the middle - almost: offset a smidgen - to the larger
side goes the camera, sideways. Just space above it for the 24-70 hood.
In the padded sleeve sits the 15 mm with the 85mm on top. The the 24-70
sans hood the other side. This lens with the hood reversed is too big. HTH

Yes. And all I had to use at that time was a Panasonic FZ10 ...
4Mpixel, JPEG only, lotsa noise over ISO 200. You do what you can...

Piffle. ;-)
That's three-four 1G cards full. Easy. Suck them all into Lightroom
and adjust away.

I like these a lot. Hard to say from the small web images how they'll
print, but they look great to my eye. A little more rendering work on
a couple of them and you're set.

18 out of 420 in these conditions is a good job. ;-)

For me personally:

I find anything much wider than the "90 degrees across the diagonal"
view of a 20-21 mm lens on 35mm, and 14mm on the Pentax DSLR, isn't
particularly useful. More FoV than that is simply too difficult to do
things that don't look gimmicky to my eye. Even that FoV is quite
radical: I use the DA21 on Pentax DSLR about 10x as much as I use the
DA14.

I stopped using the Heliar 15mm in exchange for an Elmarit-M 21mm f/
2.8 ASPH long before I stopped shooting 35mm.

Well Godders, that is indeed some good info. I knew that the 12~24 and the

GESO: Photos taken in near total darkness...

2007-04-02 Thread Charles Robinson
Did you ever bring a camera with to a show only to find out that
there wasn't ANY LIGHTING on the darned stage?

I just saw a band last weekend where the fastest shutter speed I
could use (with the DS) was 1/15 of a second, at ISO 1600, with an
F2.8 lens cranked wide open.

It was so dark that half the time I could not even tell if I had the
darned frame in focus. With that in mind, I got some shots that I
guess you could call "moody" if you wanted to be generous. I shot
about 418 frames and these 18 shots are all that I was left with
after the selection/editing process.

RAW would have made more usable images, but 418 images in RAW mode?
Not really practical!

With that in mind, for some sick reason, I thought I would share the
results. The bass player likes 'em, anyways (And it's a fun band)

Thanks, Marnie. Like your idea, but was missing some of the finer light
toned upper limbs against the brighter sky, so took it down 'til I got
them back. Also, picked up some subtle cloud detail that I liked.(?)

Re: OT- Bessa Cameras

2007-04-02 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Having owned that 15mm and used it with two Leica M bodies in a wide
variety of films, scanning the film and then comparing it to what I
get with the K10D and the DA14mm lens ...

Hands down winner on quality: the K10D and 14mm lens. If you want
wider than that, the Pentax 12-24.

And I thought the Voigtländer 15mm f/4.5 Aspheric was pretty darn
good when I had was a Leica film body to put it on..

The Sigma is not a great performer from what I've seen of it. Lots of
flare unless you keep that big front element properly shaded, and
poor resolution/contrast until well stopped down.

Re: PESO - Harriman Reservoir

2007-04-02 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Your original was rendered extremely dark, Russell. It's a simple
landscape scene ... rendered up with a bit bit of balancing between
water and sky, you get this rather nice, rather serene feel out of
it. I took the liberty of doing a couple of edits to give you an idea
where I'd go with it... It includes your original so you can see the
differences easily.

http://homepage.mac.com/godders/rk2882/

This is a case where if I was using Lightroom I could likely do most
of what I did with its tools, and presuming I had the RAW file to
work with, but with just an 8bit image file to work with Photoshop
allows the kind of gentle, selective editing required to bring this up.

1- Don't underexpose. Determine where the brightest elements are that
you want to retain detail in and expose correctly for that ...
Placing exposure properly like that takes a little time to figure out
and if you're not sure you should bracket exposure around it. The
histogram shows you an approximation based on values in the JPEG
preview that is rendered for every file, but if you're capturing in
RAW you can work with what looks like a little bit of highlight
overexposures on the histogram. It's not rigorously calibrated, you
have to work with it to understand what you're seeing.

2- Yes, this is a problem. Your screen looks overly bright compared
to the ambient light and that's tricking your eye. Better to
calibrate and profile the screen in modest, normal room light and
work that way so that your eyes and the screen are at proper
luminance values. I calibrate my screen for 140 lumens, gamma 1.8 and
5500K white point in normal, indirect room illumination. Move any
light that glares on the screen to a different position so that's not
a problem. This will make a huge difference in how your photos come out.

OT- Bessa Cameras

2007-04-02 Thread Walter Hamler
The discussion on the Voightlander 125mm Macro led me to the websight where
I discovered their listings for the Bessa cameras.
I remember fondling one of the L models when they first came out, and it
intrigued me, especially with either the 12 or 15mm lens.
Now that I am shooting digital only, I find a desire for a really superwide
lens that is not FE distorted, but the options for the Pentax are very
limited if not non-existant.
The price of a Bessa L with the 15mm lens would actually be cheaper than a
Sigma 10~20 zoom, and the image quality would undoubtably be better. Just
wondering if any of you have had any thoughts as to this camera/lens combo?

Re: Enablement: bag and cutter

2007-04-02 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
The default insert is one deep padded sleeve. Since the Canon 24-70
is pretty bulky and has a big, deep hood, I presume that Cotty has
the hood reversed on the lens when in the bag (it wouldn't fit
otherwise) and put the insert in the center. Then the camera can be
nose down into the insert with one lens on it and the other two
lenses in the openings on either side, much as this person sets his up:

   http://phred.org/~alex/pictures/pentax/domke-f803/

The front pockets are very nicely sized and have a good shape, can
handle batteries and a ton of other stuff.

If that's not how you've set it up, Cotty, I'd be interested to
see... :-)

Personally, I feel the F803 is a little unbalanced when set up this
way and I find it awkward to get the camera out. Plus, set up this
way there's no room for all the other junk I need to carry.

Also the kind comments about the salmon photo that I

Good one. Well composed. Nice use of the light.

Thanks for the comments.

Boris, part of the reason why the woman is soft is that the shutter

Re: PESO - Harriman Reservoir

2007-04-02 Thread Shel Belinkoff
Hi,

I like nice blue skies with clouds too. However, you needn't underexpose
to get them. Adjustments can be made when processing the pics that will
give you what you want. I don't know how Lightroom or iPhoto work,
although I imagen that they probably provide some of the same or similar
features as Photoshop. Are you shooting RAW? That, in and of itself,
opens lots of possibilities.

I like the pic, overall, but somehow I feel the white sky is distracting. Or
it is not white enough. I think a stronger and/or different black and white

Re: PESO - Harriman Reservoir

2007-04-02 Thread Russell Kerstetter
Thanks Bruce, PJ, Paul, Markus Shel and Brian for being honest. When
I look at it objectively, I agree that it is mostly an uninteresting
picture. Maybe next time I will try the 'Auto Compose' function on my
DL.

I have been told several times, that my pictures are too dark. To be
clear, we are talking a few stops dark, but not black or anything like
that, right?

I think there are two issues here (if anyone cares to comment further):

1) Foremost, I think I have a tendency to underexpose, specifically
on shots like this. I really like detail in the clouds and am afraid
of losing it even when the clouds are not the most important aspect of
the picture. IIRC the histogram for this shot had the highlights
touching the first bar from the right (which is a half-stop right?)
but I think that what you are seeing on your screen is probably darker
than just a half-stop.

2) I usually work in a dark room because I hate glare off the screen.
I have been running my mac on gamma 1.8 instead of 2.2, but from what
I am hearing I think that is a negligible part of my problem.

A 16-45 and 50 200 going to be good enough for this Ken. I'm travelling light.

I've been working out of my F-803 today, shooting my wife's father (with

For the size, it's a remarkable bag. I have black canvas, what colour

RE: PESO - Fairy Bower Falls

2007-04-02 Thread Tom C
Hi James.

A beautiful image and composition. The small image comes across as very
granular at this size on my monitor.

It doesn't strike me as the kind of shot one would normally shoot as
multiple frames and stitch, but it's an intriguing idea.

This image would have been up during the recent "Hitchcock/Birds"
banter had I not had an uploading link problem.
Late, but link now, hopefully, fixed.
