The charming little house on the left is for sale, if anyone is looking
for a real bargain.

RE: PESO: A vendre

2008-11-08 Thread Bob W
That's a wonderful photo and the house is indeed very cheap.

The photograph is very similar to the part of Greenwich where I live, with
similar houses. If you imagine that my street joins from the right the road
you're standing on, you'd be looking at an Alcatel site where the first
transatlantic telephone cable was built. Not as dominant and dramatic as your
plant though. There is a row of houses of very similar appearance. Behind them
is the river and a boat yard, and an enormous building site where flats, offices
and restaurants are going up. Depending on the economic situation I don't think
the Alcatel site will be there much longer, which in some ways is a pity because
Greenwich's indistrial heritage is very important.

There's no one as Irish as Barack O'Bama

I think this dates from early in 2008 but given the events of the last
few days, it's good fun if you haven't heard it (or even if you have),
whatever your political affiliations.

Next week they start on the sewers, then soon after the caissons for the

them; I just can't remember off hand how long the caisson/foundation

Interestingly he is also closely related to Princess Diana and through her, of
course, there is a direct line of descent to Mary Magdalene. This means that on
the maternal side he is a second cousin of Jesus Christ, and the
great-grandfather of Richard the Lionheart. There's some irony in this, as you
know, because while Richard the Lionheart was fighting Saladin in the Holy Land,
he was fighting another of St. Barack's antecedents. Saladin was also one of
Obama's ancestors and a descendant of the Prophet (pbuh) via Saddam Hussein.
Saddam, as we all know, was the unholy spawn of Satan and therefore a close
relative of the Bush family. So we've got another Bush in the White House.

On the paternal side his Kenyan ancestry obviously links him quite directly to
the early evolution of humankind. It can be proved genetically that he is a
direct descendant of Lucy, the Australopithecine, and therefore of the very
first humans, blessed by their outstanding intelligence and ability to run.
That's why he was so good at running for President. This puts him in direct
contradiction of those Christian fundamentalists who don't believe in evolution,
but as a the first cousin of Christ he is obviously also related directly to
God, so the fundies will have to change their minds. And who, in recent times,
looked most like God? Why, Charles Darwin of course!

So Barack is the apotheosis of mankind and a synthesis between the secular
Christian and Muslim worlds. I believe he also answers to the name Apollo, flies
around the world on a golden chariot every day, rising in the east and setting
in the west, bringing light to the world and making all the flowers grow.

FS Friday: K10D etc.

2008-11-08 Thread Stan Halpin

I know, I am a little late, but it may still be Friday somewhere...

1. K10D. Excellent condition, seldom used. Really. I got this from a
PDMLer in trade for some other equipment, he had used it very little.
And I have used it as the 2nd, backup body in my kit. Includes
original box and everything that came in the box. Going price on Ebay
seems to be about $400, I'll take $350 (including shipping) for U.S.
and Canada, $340 plus actual cost of shipping beyond North America.

2. DA 16-45/4.0 Used, good condition, no reason to sell except that I
have the 16-50/2.8 and don't really need two zooms in the same range
and could use the funds to buy a K20D body. If interested, make me a
fair offer. I haven't done the "market research" on this one to be
able to set a price yet.

3. A-100/2.8 Macro. Great lens which I just haven't used for a few
years (since I got the FA*-200 Macro). $450 plus shipping.

The photo is another great one. Is all the lighting natural? Is just

OK. Walked about 3 miles today. Shot 120 or so frames with the 645,
and it felt pretty good to get out and take some pictures. I haven't
done much shooting lately. So thanks, Cory. I'll send you the

I've had a busy week, but with some spectacular fall weather I managed a
short stroll around the campus Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, shooting
photos for the university web site. No great shakes from an artistic
standpoint but good "pretty pictures" for the web site. Here's one:

http://www.robertstech.com/pages/fotoblog/7d805877.htm

Weather today was gray and a bit dreary... perfect running weather! I
ran about 15 miles this morning. You've got some catching up to do, Scott :)

Yes folks, that's right, the built in flash.
The gathering process took me into close proximity to a couple of the

RE: PESO Lightroom 2.1 Adjustment Brush

2008-11-08 Thread Anthony Farr
There's an effect in this shot that I really like, and it has brought me
back several times for another viewing. I don't know if it has a name, but
it's the 'motion differential' (should we call it 'depth of movement'?)that
defines your main subject Akira, frozen in time, from the secondary figures
that have varying degrees of motion blur. This shot is a prime example of
the phenomenon.

I also like the tonalities that make the figures 'pop', and the composition
that seems to hang towards the left, towards where the line is moving. The
lone, abandoned ball on the right is icing on the cake, without which the
empty space would be dead space.

Well captured.

In #9, why is the back 1/3 of the plane blurred? Water vapor on a humid day?

A plane's wings passing through the air by it's airfoil nature
compresses that air, then allows it to decompress after it passes.
This sudden decompression forces any moisture out of the air, causing
those vapor clouds. As a plane approaches the speed of sound, that
cloud will work it's way towards the nose of the plane when the shock
wave the plane produces becomes almost a solid that, once passed,
again, is releasing the pressure of the compressed air mass and
forming a "cloud".

Search the web for jets sound barrier for images of the phenomenon.

Re: PESO Lightroom 2.1 Adjustment Brush

Thanks John Francis, Bob W., Dave S., Paul, Bob S., & Anthony. Comments
much appreciated. WRT the "motion differential": I think I just got lucky
and caught my nephew at a still moment of concentration as he tossed and
waited for the tennis racquet to drop, and as for the other kids--well, kids
constantly wiggle, and I think what we have here is "kids wiggle blur" :-).
I actually really like the tennis ball in the right corner too, Anthony. :-)
Anyway, thanks for the kind remarks. Cheers, Christine

There's an effect in this shot that I really like, and it has brought me
back several times for another viewing. I don't know if it has a name,
but
it's the 'motion differential' (should we call it 'depth of
movement'?)that
defines your main subject Akira, frozen in time, from the secondary
figures

that have varying degrees of motion blur. This shot is a prime example of
the phenomenon.

I also like the tonalities that make the figures 'pop', and the
composition
that seems to hang towards the left, towards where the line is moving.
The

lone, abandoned ball on the right is icing on the cake, without which the
empty space would be dead space.

Well captured.

Hi Everyone:

Finally upgraded to Lightroom 2.1 and had an opportunity to try the new
adjustment brush. Akira's face was a bit too bright, so I burned in his
face a bit. It'll take a bit more practice to get skilled at using this

new

tool, but just wondered what you guys thought. Here's my nephew,
entertaining himself in line while he waits his turn to whack the tennis
ball.

Funny thing about his tennis lesson: back in 1974 I had my first tennis
lesson at Mcfetridge (a Chicago Park), which is where Akira here in this
photo is having his first tennis class. Makes ya think . . .

Some funky light on the courts. Had to shoot really high ISO. I was
surprised.

forget this--and I flipped it around.

Next week they start on the sewers, then soon after the caissons for the

awhile. I get cc'd on the weekly status meeting minutes, and I read

least i like it).
anyway, here's the link to the gallery, since i think these are some
of the nicer photos i've took lately

http://www.flickr.com/photos/tamoneki/sets/72157608332450752/

btw. i also invented a new quasiscanning method: you use the enlarger
and put the film in, then focus the image directly onto a dslr sensor
(without any lense on) and capture (with my enlarger, i was able to
capture half a frame with each shot) the entire film in about 100
shots. than, with some ps knowledge, it takes about two hours to get
all the wanted images processed (this case, more than 20). and if
you're into stiching, it's great - because you can get as much
resolution as you want, since you can enlarge the negative to much
more than the size of your sensor

cheers,
luka

DA* 16-50 review at photozone

2008-11-08 Thread Subash

http://www.photozone.de/pentax/405-pentax_1650_28

Verdict

It is difficult to find a final verdict for the Pentax SMC DA* 16-50mm
f/2.8 ED [IF] SDM. On the one hand it has some obvious problems like a
weak border performance at max. aperture and very pronounced lateral
chromatic aberrations (CAs). On the other hand it is really very sharp
and contrasty at medium aperture settings (f/5.6-8) and many users may
actually forgive the border problems at f/2.8 because you either stop
down for conventional photography or rely on the (very sharp) center
for shallow depth-of-field situations (e.g. portraits) anyway. The
build quality of the lens is also a step up from the consumer grade
Pentax lenses and the silent (although not overly speedy) SDM is an
extra bonus on top. The pricing of the Pentax 16-50mm f/2.8 is fair
relative to its performance and build quality.
