Re: Women in Photojournalism web site and photo galleries
Hi Christine, There's some excellent work there - a bit too much to appreciate in one sitting and I found it a really annoying site to navigate. In the galleries, there doesn't seem to be any easy way to go back and look at a particular image, other than to scroll through the entire gallery until you reach the one you want. Each gallery badly needs a thumbnail index. And I wish the images were a bit larger. Gripes aside, I worked my way through the 2007 Gallery - the water polo team and small girl on the tricycle giving the finger to the photographer both brought a smile to my face. I also liked several of the images in the slide show that opens the site. I've bookmarked the site for further perusal later. Thanks for posting. He even described the nose that had a Wolf's head with barred teeth, as their squadron was called the Wolf Pack. I went on the web looking for models of the J version. Only one was ever made and was pretty hard to find, but luckily I found one here in Orlando at the local Camera and Hobby store. I just finished it today and tonight I took it to him at our Wed night Aviation Group meeting. He was in tears as he looked it over closely. He said that it was from the same squadron as his, the 38th Bomber Group. Re: Focus screen question
Given that lens adjustment got into the K20D, perhaps Pentax would consider adding a base meter adjustment setting? The value is simply that stock screens are too bright and have an aperture view of perhaps f2. A more matte replacement screen would allow more precise focusing. There are some screens, like the KatzEye, that claim not to change the metering. But the matte surface of the KatzEye screen is reputed to be very close to stock while other split-prism focusing screens offer a more matte surface (but apparently affect metering). Or does this feature exist? It would be excellent if the introduction of this feature included the announcement of a split-prism focusing screen from Pentax. Cymen On Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 9:45 AM, P. I was getting ready to shoot a concert, and since I use manual exposure all of the time, I figured that the focus assist was worth the effort to pop the screen in there. To my surprise, I haven't really noticed any exposure problems since then, so I've left it in. However, if the DS screen underexposes by -0.7EV in the K10D, I'd expect that a K10D screen in the DS would cause OVER exposure by that much. RE: Focus screen question
I have a split image screen installed in my istDS. It doesnt effect metering when metering wide open, but if you use stop down metering (green button) with K/M lenses AND you are using a small f-stop like F8 and beyond, the dark spot in the center of the screen throws off the metering a little ( tends to overexpose at small fstop settings). This non linearity with stop down metering is probably why Pentax doesnt offer split image screens. But for me, the split image is GREAT for manual focussing and I dont really use the green button metering much anyway so I prefer the trade-off heavily. The stock screen sucks for manual focussing. Re: Focus screen question
My D300 has metering bias adjustment in the custom functions, along with the 357 thousand different AF adjustments. -Adam On Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 11:06 AM, Cymen Vig [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Given that lens adjustment got into the K20D, perhaps Pentax would consider adding a base meter adjustment setting? A gent in our church flew B-25's in WWII, in New Guinea, Phillippines, and Japan. He joined in 44 at age 19 and by age 20 had flown 27 combat missions. We were talking a few weeks ago and he described the B-25 he flew, a J model with the solid nose and 8 machine guns as opposed to the clear nosed versions. He didn't recognize the painting of the Naked Lady on the side but allowed that one may have been painted like that at some time. :-) Looks like the tail gunner needs to diet ;-) -- Cheers, Cotty When they load all the ammo needed to supply those .30 and .50 caliber guns in the nose, the nose wheel will depress and level the fuselage! keith whaley -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

RE: ANY M42 DSLR rumors (yet)?
John, you are never going to be happy with digital photography. I think you need to come to grips with that. There will never be an M42 dSLR for one simple reason: it would not be profitable. Camera companies make the majority of their profits on lenses and accessories, and with millions of M42 lenses available used and in good condition (as you claim), any new lenses would be passed over for the much cheaper used stuff. A new M42 camera system would thus not generate enough new lens accessory sales to turn a profit, and the company making it would fail. Besides, for the last decade the market has been shifting to more electronic control and less mechanical stuff, such as the parts needed to perform the auto features you so desperately want. One would be hard pressed to convince current and future camera buyers that a camera based on technolgy from 50 years ago is in any way superior to modern designs. I'm sorry, but your opinions and desires are not shared by enough people to turn your dream camera(s) into reality. Re: My first ever commercial inquiry: advice wanted
I get similar messages from time to time for images on a web site that I maintain. I generally ask for $A80-$90 per image for a commercial publication. In some cases I never hear from the company again while others pay up without any further attempt to negotiate. For a large publishing house, you could probably ask for more. A high res image would be 300 dpi at whatever size they want to print the image. Probably they won't be printing at more than half the size of the page so a 2700 x 1800 pixel image should be more than large enough as it will print a 9 x 6 inch image at 300 dpi. Low res - probably a 800 x 600 image or thereabouts would be OK. Yeah, it depends on the size. I occasionally get inquiries for usage of the various photos I've taken of twins over the years at an annual twins festival I attend. If it's for something like a school brochure, I pretty much give it away. But if it's for a large textbook or something, then $150-$200 for the full-res image isn't unreasonable. -Charles -- Charles Robinson - [EMAIL PROTECTED] Minneapolis, MN http://charles.robinsontwins.org -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Specifically, ask them for more information: technical - what size, in pixels, do they need? - what colorspace the output files should be delivered in? - TIFF (8bit) or JPEG format? money Most magazines pay for photos based on the size of the photo used on the page, whether it's a cover or not, and based on their circulation numbers. Other things which can influence pricing depend on geographic market region and languages they publish in. Finding all this information is easy ... just ask. When someone I have not done business with before makes such an inquiry, I ask them what pricing schedule they usually use. If they don't have a standard, I use FotoQuote PRO's rates as a starting point. Many times the magazine cannot state before they lay out an article what size the finish is going to be, and therefore what price fits their schedule. But, for instance, on a recent magazine article that bought seven of my photos, sizes ran from 1/16 page to 2/1 page spread, with pricing from EURO 130 to EURO 720. (Of course, the majority of the images were 1/16 and 1/8 size in print.) More to the point: The Leica M-bayonet lens mount has been in current production on lenses since 1953 by its original vendor. The Practika- Pentax screw mount for auto-iris lenses has been obsoleted, effectively, for over thirty years even though a couple of third-party vendors still make lenses in this mount. M mount in its current incarnation is also the most advanced successful RF mount. While it hasn't evolved much since 1953 (Only the addition of 6 digit lens coding with the M8 introduction) it is arguably the current state of the art. Attempts to launch newer, more advanced RF mounts have effectively failed (Contax G anyone?) -Adam On Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 5:01 PM, Godfrey DiGiorgi [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: More to the point: The Leica M-bayonet lens mount has been in current production on lenses since 1953 by its original vendor.
