Christine,
You've got to let them in on the secret.
LSD is the acronym for Lake Shore Drive,
a 6 lane highway up the north shore of Chicago's lakefront.
It's conjested every morning and evening rush, but a beautiful drive.
It was imortalized in some song or another, but not very 'imortalized' I
guess.

I met a friend tonight at an Asylum Street Spankers concert. She had
printed up some business cards with a picture I had taken of her:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/3073806462/in/set-72157610559696792/
when she was showing it to me, she commented that it was the best photo
that anyone had ever taken of her tits.

I'm pretty certain that nobody has ever said that to me before. On the
other hand, I hope to be in a position to have more women say it to
me. A guy has to have goals.

And just for the record, yes, that is a cormorant in the background.

Damn. I got smoked out!

Tho I was born in Chicago I left shortly after learning to walk, to
St. Joe MI for a few years, then on to Long Island, NY. So I beg off
being familiar with the contraction of Lake Shore Drive. From several
visits 55 years ago and photos I've seen in the interim, I have a
mental picture of the road, curving along the Lake Michigan shoreline.

Now back to my history lessons...

Nice composition but the tower gets a bit lost in the background sky.

Also, I'd try a bit of perspective correction to make the verticals
vertical and the horizontals, er...horizontal. It may not be an
improvement but worth investigating.

I have it confirmed by TeKaDe the price of the 60-250 will
be 999 euros
or perhaps even less then that.
Sometimes I wonder if the 50-135 wouldnt be a better
choice, given an
extra stop and it is available.

I'm certain it's done in PS.

The post processing technique of layer stacking & masking is quite
straight forward. And not to dissimilar to this shot of mine:

There was a story in our local press a few weeks ago about a local
photographer who does mostly "domestic" scenes. Camera on tripod,
multiple shots populated by various family members in, e.g., the
kitchen. I didn't pay too much attention to the technical process,
but IIRC it had to do with Photoshop layers which is all a mystery to
me. But there was some mention also of selective lighting. So maybe
underexposing each shot, but with directed flash on the person in
each scene?

Even then, I'm not sure you could do it - not only do you have to make
sure that your subject gets full exposure, you also have to ensure that
nothing else tries to create an image on that part of the frame during
the other exposures, which is considerably more difficult.

GESO: cemetary Mary revisited

2009-03-08 Thread Larry Colen
I tried reshooting Cemetary Mary this afternoon with the K20, 18-250
and bringing my own "halos" rather than trying to rely on the
poinsettas:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157614916598003/

for reference:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157613488879884/

Today's shots with the more subtle halo are an improvement, but I
don't think that it's a shot that will quite work out. Thanks for all
the suggestions the first time around, they did help the shot.

I did learn something today, and that is even if you think shadows
will be so blurred by depth of field that they don't matter, you're
wrong.

I'm also amazed that I didn't notice the fly on her. If I had been
going for a particular shot, the fly might have been an interesting
juxtaposition, but that wasn't what I was going for and due to my
inattentiveness (a lesson I should have learned long ago) I ended up
having to throw out a bunch of shots.

Re: Multiplicity fail :(

Cory, I think the problem is this: Say you took 5 exposures, with your
daughter in 5 different places. Four of the 5 exposures don't have her in any
particular place, so she doesn't show up.

I don't know how to do such sequences; maybe underexpose the background and use
a carefully aimed flash?

Re: DA*60-250

2009-03-08 Thread Jack Davis

I owned an A*300 f/2.8 for a number of years and during that time made a few
halfhearted efforts to sell it. I do have a couple of keepers that I wouldn't
have if I hadn't lugged it all over the North American continent for so long.
Finally sold it about two year ago.
I, then, lusted after the DA*60~250 for a couple years. Thankfully, during my
wait I came to my senses and bought the DA*50~135. Much more practical for my
type of shooting. I'm now glad I "waited". What a wonderful lens it is!

Paul,
It was quite an innovation for it's time - pre super highways (1930's).
It had a set of curbs that could be raised or lowered, changing the
road from 4 lanes southbound into city center in the AM and 2 northbound into
4 lane northbound out of the city in the PM and 2 southbound.
The LSD and Outer Drive are argueably the prettiest drive in Chicago.

PDML Annual reaches Barcelona

2009-03-08 Thread Jaume Lahuerta

...just when I was starting to worry.

For the records, it took almost 3 weeks (20 days) from purchase to have the
post office notice on my mailbox. Six days for production and 2 weeks for
shipment (it was the 'banana'...err...cheap, option). There is also a return
address from Switzerland.
One of the reasons to be worried was the possibility of it being delivered by
FedEx which has not been the case, fortunately (it would have meant some sort
of customs trouble, for sure).

Regarding the book itself, I have a very good impression (opinion), not only
from my perspective but also from the people who saw it during this weekend.

I hope to have time to write a more 'technical' review and some comments, at
least for some of my favorite pics (I am afraid I won't have time to produce a
review like Cotty's...and my English is not up to the task neither).

Jaume

Anything less than 100 per day is a cause for concern

As Dave Savage said, check that you aren't sending email in HTML format.
Posts are not likely to be rejected otherwise, unless you try to
include an attachment (not allowed).

Also, if you are receiving the Digest and respond to one of the
postings, make sure you change the subject line so that it refers to the
specific post, otherwise the subject will just read something like "Re:
PDML Digest" and most people will probably ignore it. And, of
course, delete any parts of the Digest that aren't relevant to your
post.

Keep trying.

Cheers

Multiplicity fail :(

2009-03-08 Thread Cory Waters
I heard an interview on a podcast with this woman from Iceland:
http://www.rebekkagudleifs.com/ One of her series of photos that gained
her a lot of popularity is called Multiplicity. In this series, there
are multiple instances of a single person (usually the photographer
herself) in each image. I found the images interesting and decided to
try one with my daughter Emily being the subject. (here's the fail
part) I tried using the K10's multiple exposure mode and took five
shots with Emily in a different place on the swing set in each. The
resulting image is a very nice shot of the swing set with no trace of
Emily... I suppose the camera averages out the scene. In four of the
five shots there is no Emily at any given location so the end result is
no kid. I have to say, it was a little creepy to behold. I'm sure the
desired result could have been achieved in Photo shop but I was excited
about the idea of doing it "in camera". Bummer.

Re: Out Now - PDML Photo Annual 2008/9 REVIEW

2009-03-08 Thread Paul Stenquist
I once wrote a commercial for Mercedes-Benz that revolved around the
idea of a slide show. The spot consisted of a guy projecting slides of
his family vacations for a group of friends, who were seen as
foreground silhouettes. He went through slides of vacations that
spanned more than a dozen years, and the same Mercedes sedan appeared
in all of the slides. As he projected the photos, you would see the
people in the foreground sneaking out of the room. The end line was
"Nothing lasts forever, but some things seem to." It came close to
production but never quite made the cut.

My roadmap is to eventually go dual system, probably in about two
years. Then again my K100, kit lens and maybe a couple more lenses,
being a huge step up in many ways from my FZ50, was supposed to last
me a couple of years until the performance that I really wanted was
affordable.

I think I pretty much hit the low light limits of the K20 last
night. My monopod was in my other car, and I forgot about my little
tripod in my backpack. The band was lit, and I use the term lit very
loosely, by two music stand lights:

Once you've settled, get in touch and we'll arrange to meet in a more
pleasant environment. 8-)

There will be a small PDML gathering here (northern England) the week
before Easter.

What dates, and where? I am busy the weekend before Easter, but if it's some
other time I could try and get to it. Otherwise my preference would be for
an Oxford meet-up, but I will bow to the wishes of our visitors if they
prefer London.

Something like 5th to 11th April. Based here but roving as far as the
Lake District and Kielder (maybe Whitby), weather permitting.

G'day All,

A group of friends got together for a movie marathon/sleep over at an
art space on of them manages. The last movie finished at about 4:30am
me and another guy weren't tired so we went & wandered the streets
taking photos for an hour or so. Interesting time to be in the
Saturday night party district. The time when the hardcore revellers
are winding down & the cities cleaning crew get started.

Anywho, when we got back my mate was tired & crashed. Leaving me to
amuse myself.

Today, I finally got around to putting a sequence of shots I took into
a short movie.

Enjoy.

Cheers,

Dave
