Shot with the K-7 and either the 60-250 or the 15/LTD. Minimal post

The colour is Lightroom default.

The right LCDs can replace a CRT for photo work, nearly any LCD can
replace a CRT for everyday stuff like emailing and web browsing. At
home, I have a 1920x1200 and a 1650x1080, both landscape. I want to add
a portrait monitor to the system, or maybe just rotate the 1650x1080
one. At work, I have two 1650x1080 monitors, one portrait and one
landscape. I spend a lot of my time working on text (documentation and
code) and a portrait monitor really comes in handy.

When photo editing, one of the best parts of having two monitors is
that, depending on the program you're using, you can put the image on
all of one monitor and the program's toolbars and tool panels over on
the other.

Re: workstation

2009-08-07 Thread Leon Altoff
I've often wondered about the need for a really good monitor. I'd
certainly like one, but I've yet to find an IPS or VA monitor readily
available in Australia.

Then there is the question of what the image you are editing is going
to be used for. 4 colour printing doesn't have the colour gamut of
even TN screens so if the image is to be printed what use is a great
monitor? If you are publishing it on the net then 99% of people
looking at it will have TN screens so what it will never look the way
you edited it, so what is the use of a great monitor? If you are only
going to share it with other people with colour adjusted high end
monitors, you will have a small - albeit a knowledgeable and
discerning - audience.

Don't get me wrong, I'd like a nice monitor with a wide viewing angle,
great contrast and a wide colour gamut, but am I better off catering
to my audience? Please give me some justification for buying a high
end monitor that I am going to have to order specially without even
seeing how it performs!

Thanks Paul. One of the advantages to living in a very dry climate is that

Pentax FA 80-320 vs Sigma 70-300mm 4.0-5.6

I have used the Pentax FA 80-320 for a few years. I loaned it out

Now I need to replace it - for less money than I would prefer to

Many thanks,

I don't have experience with the Pentax, but I have the Tamron 70-300,
and my dad has the Sigma (we both have K10D's). I found the Tamron
pretty poor at 300mm. At the long end, it has bad purple fringing at
all apertures, and a general lack of sharpness. The purple fringing
isn't just branches against a bright sky... it also appears at the
boundary of light and dark feathers on a Canada Goose's face, for
example. At shorter focal lengths, especially 70-135mm or so, I'm
quite pleased with it. I'm also happier with the macro performance
than I expected to be.

You can browse around my photos at:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/coneslayer/tags/tamronaf70300mmf456lddimacro/
But they're all reduced in size, many are cropped, many have had the
purple fringing reduced as best I could, etc. Both of my PDML Photo
Annual images were taken with this lens. (Blasphemy?)

My dad's Sigma seems generally better than my Tamron, and I don't
think he has any real complaints about it. I've heard that the Sigmas
exhibit more lens-to-lens variation; his seems to be a good one.

My new DA*300 is in a whole different league than either of them at
300mm, of course...

GESO - Laura Jean, w/ Tom Cooney, Caitlin Park (and a really slack DA*55 vs CV58 comparison)

2009-08-07 Thread Derby Chang

Hi all,

Sasha asked what I thought about the DA*55/1.4 and the Voigtlander
58mm/1.4 SLII. Tonight, I took both out on a date (along with the 77mm
Ltd as chaperone). Here's my kiss 'n tell.

The DA*55 is no doubt a fine lens, and a great performer in low light.
Normally, I shoot manual focus in these situations, but I have no
problem letting SDM do the work once in a while. The flare control is
unsurprisingly stellar, especially with the impressive hood in place.
Sharpness in these situations is not really a high priority but it
certainly is up there with the 77mm (I'm not a sharpness fetishist anyway)

The Voigtlander 58 is a little more flare prone, not just because the
well-made but shallow metal hood doesn't help that much. But I had no
serious shots were lost because of it, so 'meh' on this one. The best
thing about it is the manual focus feel. I like buttery (though not too
heavy) helicoids and solid end-stops, so this is where the DA* looses
out. The DA necessarily feels a little loose here. I just have a little
easier time follow-focusing with the CV.

I hardly ever go to a gig without the 77. And while I only took a
handful of frames with it tonight, I'm glad I didn't break the habit.

Here are the pics. I'm not telling which lens shot which, I don't think
it matters. It would be like saying which one of my dates is my
favourite. I had a great time with all 3 of them (and you can't make
critical judgements from webs-size photos anyway).

http://members.iinet.net.au/~derbyc/09/09_08/09_08_laurajean/index.htm

...oh, the music. Caitlin Park is great. She has a lovely throaty voice
and a terrific stillness to her songs. More bands should have cute
melodica players, methinks. Tom Cooney reminds me of Fleet Foxes - very
sweet. Laura Jean, the headlinermy judgement is still out. I'm not a
big fan of worthy-cause music. And I think her songs need a little more
variety. But it was still a very enjoyable set.

I used to own a Sigma 70-300. I HATED it. Absolutely the worst lens I've
ever owned. I will never buy another Sigma lens, and not just because of
that one lens. I've tried a variety of Sigmas, and the only one I ever
liked was the 105mm macro.

More importantly, shouldn't the person who dropped the lens be buying you
the replacement?

Hi

I'm new here, although I did receive this back a few years ago. I
have a question.

I have used the Pentax FA 80-320 for a few years. I loaned it out
and the borrower dropped it, rendering it useless.

Now I need to replace it - for less money than I would prefer to
spend. How do you people think it compares with the Sigma 70-300
f4-5.6? Is there a different lens to consider in the under-$250 price
range?

Many thanks,

I have checked Pop Photos's SQF numbers since they began their lens lab tests
a number of years back. They may not be worth a damn, but their past test
protocol explanations have impressed this anti geek.
The DA 55~300's test results were significantly higher than even those produced
the DA* 300 f/4. Test sample variances notwithstanding.
BTW, and FWIW, dp comments have been very complimentary.

They don't have batteries in them, I'll see if I can find any, but if

generally you can guess pretty well from the basic spec; in my

with 178 degrees horizontal and vertical viewing angle were TN
panels; also all of those with 2ms pixel response *were* TN; some
brands have a model naming system that helps, for example i
believe all Dell UltraSharp models are IPS or VA (though i've
otherwise had bad experience counting on monitor specs on Dell's

the destination of the image matters, but when editing it's very
helpful to see as much of the image information as possible;
otherwise you might not see things that could be adjusted for
better output on the destination device; using a high quality

Ain't no big thang! I've been fired from a whole lot better jobs than
that one, so I'm doing reasonably well. This ain't no more than a speed
bump in life's highway.

I'm a little down from losing my job, but at the same time, I was
growing to hate where I was working. I loved the job itself, but the
work environment and the co-workers were not good.

They have to pay me my accrued vacation in addition to the pay I'm due.
At least they waited until the end of the payroll week, so I'll have
almost a full paycheck for this period. That will basically carry me
through the month of August and September is when I start drawing
retired pay from the Army National Guard.

Sad to say, but my retired pay from my part-time job will be more than
my full time pay from Target was.

I had intended to stay on a while after my pension kicked in and pay off
my car payment early, but I won't have to make much of a financial
adjustment to continue to live within my means.

All it really means is I won't have a financial surplus I thought was
going to allow me to indulge myself a little. In the meantime, I've got
a lot of work I can do around the house.

Don't got no honey right now, but I sure got the honey-do.

Absolutely - and that's exactly what all kind of reviewers will do until
they got next camera or feature to chomp.
Personally I don't care much - I managed to survive the Soviet age as a
child and most probably a bit inaccurate level will not kill me either.
Still I hate when some smart*sses will have ground for whining on a good
camera like K-7.

Fortunately, reviewer idiocy isn't brand specific.

I've never owned the Sigma but I was very fond of my 80-320 until it
decided that it no longer wanted to focus at infinity at the long end.

I would of thought that you might be able to pick up a used 80-320

PP looks fine to me. I particularly like the second image.

I don't know why but somehow I expected your tallest mountain to be
higher. Australia is generally thought of as being hot, dry and fairly
flat but our highest mountain (Mount Kosciuszko) at 2228 metres is
closer in height to Galdhøpiggen than I expected.

Very enjoyable - nice to trek through the snow like that. Our highest
so-called mountain, Scafell Pike, is less than 1,000m. When I went to the
top it was February and the snow was up to my hips, but it was very
enjoyable - I imagine your trek would be even more so.

Yes, I can get another 80-320 within this limit. And to answer
someone else's question, my brother-in-law who dropped the lens is
giving me enough dough to replace it. I am just looking around to
see what options are favored by other Pentax users.

I live between to particularly lofty peaks here in the state of

Mt. Baker - 3286 meters, 10,781 feet 90 km or 56 miles to my north

But I will never climb either one!

Some of my former colleagues are having to train their own

When I hear this sort of thing, it just makes my blood boil. What
unabashed nerve on the part of those corporate overlords. Ugh.

It's an opportunity, not a challenge.

William: I totally agree that the bad luck of losing one's job can turn
into opportunity. I've had that experience myself, and, at heart, I'm a
firm believer in staying positive and looking for the new bend in the road
which hopefully will lead one off the road of bad luck and panic (in the
jobloss context). But in today's job market there is a degree of
insensitivity combined with exploitation that is hard to stomach--and I feel
for folks who are victims of this.
