The right LCDs can replace a CRT for photo work, nearly any LCD can replace a CRT for everyday stuff like emailing and web browsing. At home, I have a 1920x1200 and a 1650x1080, both landscape. I want to add a portrait monitor to the system, or maybe just rotate the 1650x1080 one. At work, I have two 1650x1080 monitors, one portrait and one landscape. I spend a lot of my time working on text (documentation and code) and a portrait monitor really comes in handy. When photo editing, one of the best parts of having two monitors is that, depending on the program you're using, you can put the image on all of one monitor and the program's toolbars and tool panels over on the other. -- Thanks, DougF (KG4LMZ) -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: workstation
I've often wondered about the need for a really good monitor. I'd certainly like one, but I've yet to find an IPS or VA monitor readily available in Australia. Then there is the question of what the image you are editing is going to be used for. 4 colour printing doesn't have the colour gamut of even TN screens so if the image is to be printed what use is a great monitor? If you are publishing it on the net then 99% of people looking at it will have TN screens so what it will never look the way you edited it, so what is the use of a great monitor? If you are only going to share it with other people with colour adjusted high end monitors, you will have a small - albeit a knowledgeable and discerning - audience. Don't get me wrong, I'd like a nice monitor with a wide viewing angle, great contrast and a wide colour gamut, but am I better off catering to my audience? Please give me some justification for buying a high end monitor that I am going to have to order specially without even seeing how it performs! Once caught in the quagmire of YouTube you are lost for the day. God forbid something links me into FaceBook, which will link me into YouTube, which takes me out to HULU. Life is too short. Yeah, I know. Fortunately, I don't do FaceBook, and I don't yet know what HULU is ... although I guess I could Google it. I watched a young lady at the dog park yesterday. She got a message on her iPhone (white) at least every minute, and replied to every one faster than I can type with a keyboard. I hope she's not crippled in the thumbs by the time she's 30. I'm safe from that. I don't have an iPhone, and the battery on my cell phone is only good for a couple of hours. Don't have text messaging or internet on the phone. All I have on the cell phone is it rings if someone does happen to call and voice mail in case the battery is dead or I forgot to take it off the charger when I left the house. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Pentax FA 80-320 vs Sigma 70-300mm 4.0-5.6
Hi I'm new here, although I did receive this back a few years ago. I have a question. I have used the Pentax FA 80-320 for a few years. I loaned it out and the borrower dropped it, rendering it useless. Now I need to replace it - for less money than I would prefer to spend. How do you people think it compares with the Sigma 70-300 f4-5.6? Is there a different lens to consider in the under-$250 price range? I don't have experience with the Pentax, but I have the Tamron 70-300, and my dad has the Sigma (we both have K10D's). I found the Tamron pretty poor at 300mm. At the long end, it has bad purple fringing at all apertures, and a general lack of sharpness. The purple fringing isn't just branches against a bright sky... it also appears at the boundary of light and dark feathers on a Canada Goose's face, for example. At shorter focal lengths, especially 70-135mm or so, I'm quite pleased with it. I'm also happier with the macro performance than I expected to be. You can browse around my photos at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/coneslayer/tags/tamronaf70300mmf456lddimacro/ But they're all reduced in size, many are cropped, many have had the purple fringing reduced as best I could, etc. Both of my PDML Photo Annual images were taken with this lens. (Blasphemy?) My dad's Sigma seems generally better than my Tamron, and I don't think he has any real complaints about it. I've heard that the Sigmas exhibit more lens-to-lens variation; his seems to be a good one. My new DA*300 is in a whole different league than either of them at 300mm, of course... -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
GESO - Laura Jean, w/ Tom Cooney, Caitlin Park (and a really slack DA*55 vs CV58 comparison)
Hi all, Sasha asked what I thought about the DA*55/1.4 and the Voigtlander 58mm/1.4 SLII. Tonight, I took both out on a date (along with the 77mm Ltd as chaperone). Here's my kiss 'n tell. The DA*55 is no doubt a fine lens, and a great performer in low light. Normally, I shoot manual focus in these situations, but I have no problem letting SDM do the work once in a while. The flare control is unsurprisingly stellar, especially with the impressive hood in place. Sharpness in these situations is not really a high priority but it certainly is up there with the 77mm (I'm not a sharpness fetishist anyway) The Voigtlander 58 is a little more flare prone, not just because the well-made but shallow metal hood doesn't help that much. But I had no serious shots were lost because of it, so 'meh' on this one. The best thing about it is the manual focus feel. I like buttery (though not too heavy) helicoids and solid end-stops, so this is where the DA* looses out. The DA necessarily feels a little loose here. I just have a little easier time follow-focusing with the CV. I hardly ever go to a gig without the 77. And while I only took a handful of frames with it tonight, I'm glad I didn't break the habit. Here are the pics. I'm not telling which lens shot which, I don't think it matters. It would be like saying which one of my dates is my favourite. I had a great time with all 3 of them (and you can't make critical judgements from webs-size photos anyway). http://members.iinet.net.au/~derbyc/09/09_08/09_08_laurajean/index.htm ...oh, the music. Re: PESO: DA 55~300 Moon
I have checked Pop Photos's SQF numbers since they began their lens lab tests a number of years back. They may not be worth a damn, but their past test protocol explanations have impressed this anti geek. The DA 55~300's test results were significantly higher than even those produced the DA* 300 f/4. Derby, some really nice photos! And thank a lot for posing your feeling about lenses, it is very valuable. Caitlin Park is great. She has a lovely throaty voice and a terrific stillness to her songs. More bands should have cute melodica players, methinks. Tom Cooney reminds me of Fleet Foxes - very sweet. Laura Jean, the headlinermy judgement is still out. I'm not a big fan of worthy-cause music. And I think her songs need a little more variety. But it was still a very enjoyable set. Ain't no big thang! I've been fired from a whole lot better jobs than that one, so I'm doing reasonably well. This ain't no more than a speed bump in life's highway. I'm a little down from losing my job, but at the same time, I was growing to hate where I was working. I loved the job itself, but the work environment and the co-workers were not good. They have to pay me my accrued vacation in addition to the pay I'm due. At least they waited until the end of the payroll week, so I'll have almost a full paycheck for this period. That will basically carry me through the month of August and September is when I start drawing retired pay from the Army National Guard. Sad to say, but my retired pay from my part-time job will be more than my full time pay from Target was. I had intended to stay on a while after my pension kicked in and pay off my car payment early, but I won't have to make much of a financial adjustment to continue to live within my means. All it really means is I won't have a financial surplus I thought was going to allow me to indulge myself a little. In the meantime, I've got a lot of work I can do around the house.
