As of this week 35mm full-frame is $2000 and by this time next year it will be approaching $1500. I agree. Here I repeat a concept I've been stressing for years (any of you remembering my discussions with Shel long time ago?), but I haven't repeated over the last years, so it's worth doing now. In my view, in practice APS is the "new" small format (which once used to be 35mm film), 24 x 36 is the current medium format and everything above that is large format. Ralf, I did some night photography (exposures no more than 30 sec, inclusive) and it seems that K-7 does not do dark frame subtraction in this case, or may be it does it somehow faster, as there were no delay between the shutter closing and picture being available for review. Re: PESO 2009 - Lamborghini Espada - GDG
My uncle had the Espada, I owned a 350GT. Both had stunning, unusual styling, were very fast and very civilized to drive. Their V12 engines were positively musical to listen to. The Espada was their second highest production car, through three series from '68 to '75 they made 1,271 of them. By comparison, they only made 150 of the 350GTs before they moved on to the 400GT. (I had chassis #2...) To refer to them as "unfortunately" in any way, shape or form is laughable. Re: OT: Sony Releases A850 FF Camera for $2,000
Not so sure if it would be that small, since it would be as deep as the current cameras to use the current lenses. Could be an interesting product... leaving the mirror, using live view with a moving LCD. I can imagine a dedicated studio and HD video brick too... using KAF mount... ;-) lf Desjardins, Steve escreveu: I'm not much of an engineer, so I'll just ask. You ought to be in Marketing. :-) Seriously, that makes sense and gives a rationale to the lens line-up. I believe Pentax will *HAVE* TO GO FULL-FRAME, like Mark said, out of necessity. When this happens (not *if*), what will they do with APS-C? They cannot give up on it given how much they've invested in DA lenses, so they will most likely keep an APS-C line up, but how advanced will these cameras be? I don't think Pentax has the resources to keep a parallel line of APS-C and FF cameras, so they will probably introduce only one FF model, which should be their flagship...relegating APS-C cameras to the entry-level ranks. What happens then to those of use that like APS-C? I want a K-7 for its small size (which is an advantage of APS-C not exploited in the flagship cameras since the *ist D) and other advanced features. I also happen to like the FoV offered by classic focal length zooms on APS-C sensors (the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 is my main lens), and I also like small primes. Once Pentax make FF their top-of-the line camera, will they also release a more compact APS-C equivalent? I doubt it. This means that if I want to upgrade my camera in 2-3 years time, my only options will be a fully-featured FF model, or a lower-spec'd APS-C. I fear the K-7 (or its slightly upgraded successor) will be the last of the great (small bodied) APS-C cameras in the Pentax line-up. And even if Pentax manage to squeeze a 35mm sensor into a K-7 body, I'm still left searching for a 40-115mm f/2.8 zoom lens as compact as my Tammy to serve as my workhorse. I know nobody will ever build one, least of all Pentax. Interesting times lie ahead, Gentlemen. On Mon, Aug 31, 2009 at 02:04:42PM -0400, Miserere scripsit: > I believe Pentax will *HAVE* TO GO FULL-FRAME, like Mark said, out of > necessity. When this happens (not *if*), what will they do with APS-C? But they don't have to go full-frame. IF Pentax-the-brand wants to go compete at the 2 kUSD, 5 kUSD, and 10 kUSD camera price points, they can't do it with APS-C. That's all. They might make a virtue of necessity and stick to APS-C, small, compact, high-spec-for-the-price cameras for adventurers and people who don't want to carry that much mass when out for a stroll, and so on. This is how I would read their current public statements. They might decide that the proper high-end is the 645D, and leapfrog digital "full frame" entirely in favour of a nominally medium format line, complete with new lenses. (This looks like what they're doing if they're going high end at all.) Lots of good marketing spin can be had for this if they can get the price/performance there. They might decide that they want to make the APS-C camera and a partner (such as Samsung) can make the full frame or medium camera, and Pentax can be the lens-maker for the full frame body partner. Or some other clever combination that lets them get some more revenue stream and share development costs. But, truly, it is obvious to the meanest intelligence that full-frame isn't a game Pentax can win. (Not with Sony subsidizing their bodies to the extent that they're willing to.) They're doing not so bad right now by selling into a segment where nobody else is playing; they presumably want to find another such segment if they want to start selling "pro" price-point cameras. -- Graydon -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

The 24x36 vs APS-C wankfest is fun and all, but it seems to me that everyone is missing the most critical thing Pentax needs in order to sell cameras: Get them in stores where people can buy them. -- The first step is learning to take great photos, the second step is learning to throw away ones that are merely good. Pentax at Fry's
Yesterday I went to the local Fry's Electronics (Concord, CA) to replace my mouse and of course I had to swing through the camera section. I played with the X70 a little and was slightly underwhelmed, but I think it would be a good camera for general ultra-zoom use. I may still recommend it to my dad whenever he decides to replace the KonicaMinolta I sold him three or four years ago. There were two K2000 bodies on display, both with the 18-50 lens. I dig that little camera, for sure. The K-7 was present as well, though for some reason there was no lens on it. I played with it (read: drooled on it) for a few minutes before tearing myself away from the awesomeness. They had at least one lens available too, though it was hard to see it since they'd buried it under a bunch of Canon junk near the floor. I'm pretty sure it was the 50-200. Re: OT: Sony Releases A850 FF Camera for $2,000
I didn't say the 645D would be cost competitive with low-end full frame cameras, but it will fill the need for a flagship offering. Although I could see a follow-up to that camera with a smaller sensor but the 645D lens mount providing an entry level offering. Small companies need not try to be all things to all people. Leadership in APS-C is a good place to be, particularly if you have a great lens lineup to support that positioning. A lot of people were absolutely certain that the successor to the K20D would be FF. It didn't happen, and I don't think it's going to happen. For your zoom, try the old A35-105 f3.5. For a FF camera, I wouldn't be surprised to see Pentax skip to a 645 format sensor as the flagship. Regards, Bob S. RE: OT: Sony Releases A850 FF Camera for $2,000
I think one of the smaller formats (with interchangeable lenses) will persist. Micro 4/3 has the obvious advantage of being significantly different from typical DSLRs. I do see JCO's point that FF dslrs aren't really any bigger than their APS-C counterparts. If the pcrcie of FF comes down far enough then they will take over. OTOH, $1500 vs. $800 might be a deal breaker for enough of the market. Micro 4/3 is much smaller, however, including the lenses, and I think here is a real market for that. Look at how well the E-P1 sold, given how expensive it is. -Original Message- From: pdml-boun...@pdml.net [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of Mark Roberts Sent: Saturday, August 29, 2009 2:32 PM To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: Re: OT: Sony Releases A850 FF Camera for $2,000 Resolution.
