Don't we all?

I'm married to an accountant, so we generally end up owing money to
both the feds and the state - why give them a free loan of your money?

But that's not the big demand on the bank account at present - far
more of a strain is coming because we're doing a complete kitchen
remodel; everything goes out, one interior wall gets modified, and
new floor, cabinets and appliances go in. The only thing that we
are keeping from the old kitchen is the oven - it's a fairly new
double wall oven - and even that is moving to a new position.

With any luck we'll actually get to use the new kitchen this time;
the last time we upgraded the kitchen my job suddenly switched to
the other side of the country, and so we ended up selling the house
after only a couple of years with our new kitchen. This one is a
a bit smaller, but somehow seems to end up costing rather more ...

K-7 and shims, the story goes on

2010-04-11 Thread Boris Liberman

Hi!

I've just returned from Pentax Israel. They couldn't do it. Not because
they were not capable, but because, as they said, the procedure would
mean "playing" and lots of time spent. The technician suggested that I
do it myself, because, he said, no one would take full responsibility
for their actions should they damage the camera in any way. He offered
to install the original screen back free of charge (of course) if I fail
to win the shim game. I don't hold anything against Pentax Israel, and
if fact I might have expected such a reply - it makes certain sense to me.

Now, if anyone who is coming to Chicago did this or if anyone would be
willing to help me by explaining the process, I'd be most grateful.

In principle, I would like to come to Chicago with proper screen and A
50/1.2 lens for general shooting. At very worst, I could postpone the
shim installation until I actually arrive there should anyone would be
willing to lend me a hand.

*sigh*

Any help appreciated in advance.

Some controversy over photography terms

Obvious stuff first:
No aperture simulator.
No manual DOF preview.
No hood on the kit lens.
(BTW, Canon hood for kit lens £12.00; Pentax hood £28.00)
No power/wired remote sockets.
(At least, not standard sockets - there is a custom mains power system)

More subtle things:
The grip is not so good for me but I have large hands. I do prefer
small cameras.

I miss the top LCD.
The detent on the function wheel seems less positive. No problems yet.

I tried looking up old mail about my improperly shimmed screen, and
these were the symptoms of when I had two shims rather than one:

When the camera autofocuses the top of the split prism is offset

showing a disagreement between the camera and the screen.

I just did a quick test and it seems as if the camera is focusing
properly, but the screen isn't.

"Package goods" is a term used in the northeast US at least for liquor. In
Mass at least the law required that liquor when sold at retail must be put
into a container, hence "Package". Liquor stores were called "Package
Stores" and in the Boston area at least shortened colloquially to "Packie" .

Thanks for that. I've always liked the look of the Novoflex gear, but

When I was making fine art B&W prints, I was printing on air dried fibre

Epson exhibition fibre comes close to matching that look.

Thanks Paul. Now I just have to find a digital B&W printing option that I

Re: PESO: Royal Diner

2010-04-11 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
You are right John. In Jersey, as in Mass, "package goods" means
liquor, wine and beer sold for off-premises consumption. There are
different licenses here; most package goods stores are not licensed
to serve alcohol in the store. One needs a bar license for that.
Some places, like the Royal, are licensed to sell for both on-premises
and off-premises consumption.

Re: PSO: Branchburg Diner

2010-04-11 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks for looking and commenting, Frank.

New Jersey was the center of diner culture. Every town had at least
one downtown, and there was one every few miles on most major
highways. Some, like the Flemington Circle Diner, became tourist
attractions, with people driving from New York to sample the legendary
cheesecake.

Most are gone, and others (like Whitehouse and Branchburg) are
abandoned. In the last decade or so, however, a number have be
rehabilitated and a few new ones -- like Loukas' -- have been built
new from scratch.

sharpness has improved, almost razor sharp. Focusing is very

Katz screens are helpful, but focusing being difficult is an inherent
property of catadioptric designs; the plane of focus is very flat and
has no depth to speak of (most but not all of a blackbird (treating
North American robins and the Eurasian blackbird as equivalent units of
measurement) at 20m, plane-of-focus depth.).

This is great for many applications, especially off support, but it's
something of a trick for hand-held shooting. I can manage one in five
shots having the plane of focus more or less where I want it handheld on
a very good day with something to lean against. Some days it is more
like one in 15.

Not a great shot. I knew they would be far back from the road, so i
used the D200 and the Sigma 170-500, at 500. (I was going to use the
K10D and Sigma 300 with 1.4 tele, but could not find the tele) Its not
a great lens on digital, maybe better on a film body, but i have never
tried it. Not very contrasty and its soft.
No tripod, i forgot it, so i shot from the passenger side and used the
window as a tripod.

Any way, here it is.:-)

RE: tripod advice sought

2010-04-11 Thread John Sessoms

From: Graydon

OK, so I want to stick about 5 kg of spotting scope (127mm catadioptric)
on a tripod; I've figured out that a Jobu Designs gimbal head will work
with something that size, so I'm OK for answering "what head do I get?"
but am currently wandering off into the weeds in all directions trying
to sort out tripod legs.

Ideally, I want something that:
- has no centre column

I believe most Gitzo tripods allow you to unscrew the center column from
the platform at the top and use the platform by itself.

The Manfrotto 190XWNB (which appears to be an improved Bogen 3021) has a
"low angle adapter" built into the center column. Basically you take
the bottom off the center column, flip it over and insert it in place of
the center column and it has a 3/8" threaded stud for mounting whatever
head you want. That gets you down as low as 3.3"

It has retractable spiked feet, but only extends to 46-1/2" without the
center column. It's about $200 from B&H.

- is about 54" high fully extended (52 is not too low, but 50" is;
  56" would be usable)
- isn't heavy
- isn't Feisol, since I though the 3442 would be about ideal and
they just bait-and-switched me (got an email saying they wouldn't
fulfil the order taken by their online ordering system at that price)
- has, or has the option of, spike feet
- can be had in Canada without resort to surreptitious parachuting

And, of course, doesn't cost the earth. I figured the collective wisdom
of the list would be a good place to start enquires, and since I do
intend to attach the thing to a Pentax camera (1500/f12; better be a
sunny day...) some of the time it's even on topic!

-- Graydon

In your position, I'd just browse B&H's web site and find the one that
fits my needs and then look for a place in Canada that stocks it at a
price I was willing to pay.

In my position, I'd just order what I need from B&H (if one of my two
local independent camera stores didn't stock it), since I don't have to
hassle with customs to get stuff from NYC.

Although I think the hassles come from Canadaian Customs rather than
from B&H.

And at that, I thought Canada was part of NAFTA. Why *IS* there a hassle
with Canadian Customs?

Nobody does, so I actually ordered from B&H.  (Which I feel is fair;
I've been using their website as a search resource for awhile.)

Wound up with "Cullmann Magnesit 528C Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs", which
might be slightly short but this is probably survivable. (I don't
actually know how much tripod head to eyepiece clearance I'll have to

Sometimes. Sometimes they come from somebody at the shipping company
just losing things, but you have to wait until it could not possibly
still be stuck in customs before complaining.

Load, mostly. They have to collect either GST or HST, depending on
which province, and if they're understaffed for the current peak load
(which they ought to be about half the time...), things are slow. There
have historically been various morality hassles and people enacting
their own political agendas, too, which I am not pleased about but don't
expect to apply to tripods.

The "American Diner" seems a vanishing breed; that you have so many
in your area seems amazing. Your project to capture them while
they're still available is a brilliant idea.

While they may be dying in the north, new ones are being built and
opened in the South. There are a couple of franchise outfits opening
them - 5 & Diner and Shiny Diner I think.

Shiny Diner is from the same folks who originally took the Hardee's

Re: PESO: Royal Diner

2010-04-11 Thread John Sessoms

From: "John Mullan"
"Package goods" is a term used in the northeast US at least for liquor. In
Mass at least the law required that liquor when sold at retail must be put
into a container, hence "Package". Liquor stores were called "Package
Stores" and in the Boston area at least shortened colloquially to "Packie" .

I think it's technically liquor for take out. Local liquor laws allow
bars with the correct license to also sell bottles for consumption off
premises.

If closing time / "last call" comes and you aren't finished drinking,
you can buy a bottle to take with you.

We though the USA was part of NAFTA, but there always seems to be some sort
of protectionist sanction going on that was covered by NAFTA but arbitrarily
ignored by one government or the other (usually the US).

However, NAFTA's scope covers trade of goods manufactured within the
signatory countries, not trade of goods manufactured by third party
countries.
So, a tripod that is made in Taiwan, and imported to the USA would be
subject to duties when it is subsequently imported to Canada, since Taiwan
is not part of NAFTA.

Re: PSO: Branchburg Diner

2010-04-11 Thread John Sessoms

From: "Daniel J. Matyola"

Got me thinking. There used to be a diner in downtown Raleigh, but I
can't remember the name to save my life. We used to go down there on
Wednesday nights for their $0.99 "Hamburger Steak w/onions & gravy"
platter. Starving Student days.

It got torn down in the early 70s.

Funny thing is, whatever was built on the site was demolished and
replaced some time in the early 90s, and THAT building has now been
demolished so the city can build a parking garage at that location.

So much that was worthwhile in Raleigh was demolished to make way for junk.

the same highway, but it closed years ago. They Royal had a liquor
license, which was somehow moved to this location. It now operates
mostly as a bar and liquor store, but also has some "snacks."

Actually, while you can remove the center column & attaching plate, you must
replace it with a flat plate that includes just the screw for attaching a
head.
Of course you can also get most Gitzos with just the flat plate and forego
the center column altogether. This is how I've purchased the Gitzos I've
used, as the extendable column lessens the stability of the tripod assembly.

I have a Gitzo 3530LS that can handle all my camera/lenses up and including
a 600mm and the tripod itself is lighter than the light/medium duty Bogen I
use to own. Height wise its just right for me & I'm 6'3".

But new Gitzos don't qualify as cheap.

The Manfrotto 190XWNB (which appears to be an improved Bogen 3021) has a
"low angle adapter" built into the center column. Basically you take the
bottom off the center column, flip it over and insert it in place of the
center column and it has a 3/8" threaded stud for mounting whatever head
you want. That gets you down as low as 3.3"

It has retractable spiked feet, but only extends to 46-1/2" without the
center column. It's about $200 from B&H.

- is about 54" high fully extended (52 is not too low, but 50" is;
  56" would be usable)
- isn't heavy
- isn't Feisol, since I though the 3442 would be about ideal and
they just bait-and-switched me (got an email saying they wouldn't
fulfil the order taken by their online ordering system at that
price)

Although I think the hassles come from Canadaian Customs rather than from
B&H.

And at that, I thought Canada was part of NAFTA. Why *IS* there a hassle
with Canadian Customs?

Jersey Diner that had the owner had purchased and moved to Michigan from
New Jersey. There are several Jersey Diners in Michigan BTW.

I grew up in New Jersey and didn't realize that these little eateries were
unique to the state.

I think it's technically liquor for take out. Local liquor laws allow
bars with the correct license to also sell bottles for consumption off
premises.

If closing time / "last call" comes and you aren't finished drinking,
you can buy a bottle to take with you.

"Package goods"/"Package Store" is pretty common across the US

Heck, liquor in the South is such a big deal that some of the stuff gets
out of hand. I don't know if they still require it or not, but at one
time, South Carolina required that liquor stores be covered with big red
spots. They also used to allow sales of liquor only between dawn and

While I'm not a big fan of "breakfast food", except maybe a really

I've been to a lot of diners on the west coast, and the ones I've been

Re: K-7 and shims, the story goes on

2010-04-11 Thread Larry Colen

Boris,

odd, I thought this went out this morning.

I've done screens several times: in and out of my K100, into both
copies of my k20, with an extra out and in with my shims. I could
give you a hand in Chicago.

What I recommend you do:

Set it up with a focus target. Run a test and find out how far it is
off in which direction.

Remove the shim (make sure it isn't doubled up), measure it again,
and see how far off it is in which direction.

Measure the thickness of the shim. It should be simple math to
calculate what shim you will need to get the screen adjusted just right.

would take full responsibility for their actions should they damage
the camera in any way. He offered to install the original screen
back free of charge (of course) if I fail to win the shim game. I
don't hold anything against Pentax Israel, and if fact I might have
expected such a reply - it makes certain sense to me.

Now, if anyone who is coming to Chicago did this or if anyone would
be willing to help me by explaining the process, I'd be most grateful.

In principle, I would like to come to Chicago with proper screen and
A 50/1.2 lens for general shooting. At very worst, I could postpone
the shim installation until I actually arrive there should anyone
would be willing to lend me a hand.

*sigh*

Any help appreciated in advance.

Well, the only place I really know the rules is North Carolina, 'cause
that's where I live and that's where I usually drink.

In NC hard liquor is only available as mixed drinks at clubs &
restaurants. Packaged, i.e. bottle liquor, is only available from State
controlled ABC (alcohol beverage control) stores.

I have heard the name package store used as a euphemism for ABC store
among others. I think my favorite of all time is "going to see Anna
Belle Carter."

You cannot buy liquor by the bottle from a place that serves mixed drinks.

The one thing North Carolina does that is good is publishes a quarterly
price list, so you can see what brands are available and the price is
the same state wide. It even has photos. ;-D

http://www.ncabc.com/pricing/pricebook.aspx

Beer and wine are treated differently. Most places that serve beer or
wine for on premises consumption can also sell you a bottle or six-pack
to take with you. And locations that serve mixed drinks and beer and
wine can sell beer and wine by the bottle, although again it's usually
going to get marked up to a premium price.

Heck, liquor in the South is such a big deal that some of the stuff gets

spots. They also used to allow sales of liquor only between dawn and

I remember the big red spots from years ago, although I don't think they
were required to cover the entire store, plus they were required for
locations that sold only beer and wine for off premise consumption as
well. I think that requirement was dropped several years back. Also, I
think South Carolina did away with licensing private liquor stores and
went to a state control model similar to North Carolina's ... although I
could be wrong about that, since I hardly ever look for liquor stores in
South Carolina.

Exhibit details

2010-04-11 Thread Larry Colen

I'm trying to tie up the final details for the show.

I don't understand how the pricing of the art works as there is both
an "asked for" and a "minimum" price on the form. Is there some sort
of consensus on what people are asking for their prints?

If someone wants me to come shoot photos for them, I can come up with
a value for my time. If someone says they like one of my photos,
chances are that it's a friend and my response is likely to be along
the lines of, "sure, Costco charges me $3 for a 16x20, why don't you
buy me lunch when I give it to you".

Also, if there isn't any sort of limited edition, if more than one
person wants to buy a photo, would Mark be willing to print more
copies, and what would he charge to do so?

Christine posted a list of suggested hotels for the event. Was there
one that most people ended up getting reservations at?

I've been struggling with the CV and the artists statement, if anyone
wants to read and comment, I posted them on my LJ:

http://lrc.livejournal.com/1094985.html

I'm afraid that it does not, as of yet, mention nekkid wimmin.
