K-7 and K-5 do that via HDMI output.
I haven't tried the AV output in them and other camera models, but I think
they only output the signal during playback.

I was wondering if any of the Pentax DSLRs actually transmit a "Live View"
video feed through their video output connection?

The reason I'm asking, I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to place
a Pentax DSLR in a remote location (on the end of a pole, for example) and
view the Live View signal on a remote monitor. If so, you could trip the
shutter remotely and use the camera in places where it's physically
impractical to place your head behind the camera.

If this would work, which models of Pentax support this sort of remote
live viewing?

Mea culpa, I mentally translated TTL to P-TTL, just treating it as Through The
Lens metering in general.

So far, I've found three reasons to use my AF540 in manual mode, My K100Dsuper,
my K20D, and to a lesser extent my K-x. Frankly, in my experience, Pentax
flash metering technology lies somewhere between useless and destructive.
Granted, it has improved a lot lately, and I have actually found several
situations with the K-x that using p-ttl with the AF-540 has led to photos with
nearly acceptable exposure. But, even if p-ttl were to work perfectly the
question of why I would want full control of any piece of photographic
equipment stuns me from a photographer of your ability? Do you just leave your
camera in green mode and autofocus and let it make every decision for you? I
didn't buy a DSLR because of how well it took photos without my input, I took a
DSLR because of how well it lets me control it.

In that case, it should be fairly straightforward to set up an Android (or
iPhone) to record gps data periodically, and go from there. I tried to see if
such a program already existed, but most of what I got was about using the
internal camera.

In a similar vein, I believe that the pc jack is not limited by shutter speed,
as I've had several shots that didn't sync because the shutter speed was too
high. In theory, one could buy a $10 bluetooth headset, wire the button to a
pc sync cable so that every time you took a photo, the headset would send a
ping to the android, then simply write an ISR that used that signal to look up
gps location rather than dialing the phone.

Using, of course, "beer and pizza" definitions of "simple" and
"straightforward".

Re: Which Macro Lens?

2011-02-10 Thread eckinator
if your enlarger lens is good old M39 you can pick up a cheap used
Zörk Mini Macro Helix along with am M39 adaptor, some M42 extension
tubes or an M42 bellows and a M42 to PK adaptor. with a little luck
you can get all that for under $150 and it will let you focus and
shoot with enlarger lenses just fine. You could even do it w/o the
Zörk with just an M42 to M39 adaptor if you can find one.

TTL flashes don't work on the K-r, or any of the other recent Pentax DSLRs. The
AF540 is a good flash. It's P-TTL, which is the Pentax auto format. Why would
you want to use it in manual mode.

Re: Which Macro Lens?

2011-02-10 Thread Glen Berry
I just realized that I have a lens-reversing adapter. I just mounted a
Pentax 50mm f2.0 lens on my camera backwards, and it gave fairly
impressive results. When shooting coins, a US quarter will almost
totally span the narrow dimension of the frame. There is just a very
tiny amount of space left on both sides of the coin.

Using this same adapter, along with a special adapter plate for my old
Omega enlarger, I can mount my Pentax DSLR in place of my enlarger head.
This will let me shoot high-magnification macro through my EL-Nikkor
enlarging lens. With the camera mounted on the enlarger it's not
terribly portable, but I can definitely make use of this here at home.

These are some things I can make good use of right now, until I get more
elaborate macro gear. :)

I want to think everyone for their macro lens suggestions. You've all

Re: Pentax GPS accessory

2011-02-10 Thread Glen Berry
This seems like it would be a good application for blue tooth
technology. That is, if only Pentax cameras were built with blue tooth
capability. You would then only have to have the GPS unit near the
camera, not connected to it.

It's got to have some sort of output from the camera to tell it when a
photo is taken so it knows when to log the coordinates. I'm curious
how it gets that information since the hot-shoe it appears to mount on
doesn't trigger all the time.

Re: OT Screen brightness or print problem

2011-02-10 Thread Paul Stenquist
It would be better to find a way to control the light in the room, rather than
changing the monitor for different conditions. Can you put a shade or curtain
on the window? It's hard to evaluate images for printing if the room lighting
keeps changing.

brightness in different light conditions.

When i figured out what worked best last weekend, it had been during a
rather long spell of overcastness. This is were i figured that -10-11
clicks worked best.

Today i was looking at the same photos, now in the room with diffused
bright sun light. I had to bump up from -11 to about -8 or -7 to get

Seems a few days of playing to get a screen profile for various light

I'm sure you'll enjoy the K-r if Larry's experience with the one he tested

Regarding a flash, keep in mind that the K-r doesn't support TTL. You will
need a flash that offers P-TTL. So models such as the AF330FTZ or AF400FTZ
won't work properly and you'll need something like the AF360FGZ. Check out
the K-mount page
(http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/index.html) for further details.

Alternatively, you could go for one of the older flashes that offer auto
flash control such as the AF280T.

I like it! Glad to see they still paint barns in Iowa. Seems that if
they do it in Nebraska their property values go up.
(Only wish I was joking).

Well if the govt punishes you for painting you get less painting. I
don't know Iowa's policy on barns but there are some in need of paint

improving.Thanks for looking Darrren.

Newbie with DSLR and soon to be an owner of a K-R when it arrives...

2011-02-10 Thread Jeffery Johnson
Howdy..
My new first time DSLR, the K-R, is still in Knoxville and due to the lovely
snow we had yesterday afternoon/evening it is delayed. (It took me an hour
and a half to get home and needless to say I did not even attempt to go into
work today.) It was supposed to be here this evening but now it may not
arrive until tomorrow or worse not tell Monday. With the camera I also went
ahead and got a remote and two 52mm filters for the 18-55mm kit lens as I
already have two 58mm filters that will work with the 55-300mm kit lens.
This coming week I am going to get an adapter so I can use AA batteries and
a second li-on battery.

Down the road when our monies are not so tight and once I am comfortable
with the K-R and DSLR photography I would not mind getting a couple of extra
lenses. The following list is a few lenses I have come across that I find of
interest and they are not listed in any order of importance. Perhaps someone
on the list has a spare one of these lenses they could donate to a newbie or
keep an eye out at local flea markets, yard sales and the like. Just keep in
mind if by chance you do come across a lens listed I truly cannot afford an
arm and a leg for a lens.

Super-Takumar 55mm f=1:2/55 lens
Pentax 50mm f/1.7 SMC-M
Pentax KA f2.8 28mm lens
SMC Pentax 100mm F4 Macro
SMC PENTAX-FA 1:2.8 50mm MACRO
SMC Pentax 30mm F2.8
SMC Pentax-A 50mm 1.7

Also at some point down the road going to look into an TTL flash but to be
honest I am not certain which one to get that I can afford so it is rather
low on the list of items.

I also would like to ask "When is Spring and when will it finally get here?"
I am so so tired of snow and to a degree the cold but more so the snow, ice
and bad roads. Oh and some good books or perhaps good websites for us DSLR
newbies.

That's exactly what some of these devices do. They simply record where
you've been at some predetermined rate (likely every few seconds). Then
back at home, software supplied with the device matches the images' EXIF
times with your location log and updates the EXIF.

So you shouldn't even need to attach the device to the camera really,

Christine, I do not know exactly why she dressed this way - she likes
acting, cinema etc.
It is not a play she is in, she rather wanted to try her in this emploi.

If she's interested in theater, she doesn't necessarily need to have a
specific current role in mind to start building a portfolio showing her
range as an actor.

maybe it is just a data logger and only attaches to the hotshoe

It's got to have some sort of output from the camera to tell it when a
photo is taken so it knows when to log the coordinates. I'm curious how
it gets that information since the hot-shoe it appears to mount on
doesn't trigger all the time.

I ran versions of the test with both autofocus, and manual focus with the

Some of it was CA. Oddly, to me, this lens doesn't seem to be in the lightroom

Re: OT - Enablement of the fluffy kind

2011-02-10 Thread Christian
He'll be a house dog but I'm going to train him to pull me on skis in
winter "Skijorning" and a scooter in the summer "Scootering." Another
interesting looking activity is "bikejorning" where the dog pulls while
you ride a mountain bike. Strangely enough the breed that does the
best in Skijorning competition is German Shorthair Pointers, which was
the last dog I had.

Based on his pedigree which is world-class and if I have the time, I
might look at conformation but I really hate the politics and absurdity
of dog shows.

Thanks to everyone who replied (and even those that didn't; but

He's a Samoyed; a Nordic breed originally used to pull sleds, herd
reindeer, hunt walruses and polar bears and a companion to keep its
human family warm during the cold Siberian winters. Males get to

about

23in tall and weigh up to 60lbs (that's like 1.5m tall and 234kg

The whole family is very excited to bring him home in a few weeks.

PESO - Thaw

2011-02-10 Thread Don Guthrie
Whenever I see pictures like this I think of the printing term "spot
color" Nice catch. The color in the playground equipment stands out as
well. A vertical crop works also. But I sorta like the wide view to set
the scene.

Thanks, David/Collin/Paul.

I think I understand, now.

I was thinking that since the snow was so glaringly bright that it would
throw the meter off irrespective of the actual subject -- assuming the
subject isn't the snow itself.

But, as I understand you all now, as long as there's a dark enough
counterpoint to the snow within the frame, the metering will average
out. My question in that case is, does the ratio of dark to light
matter? Say, if you have a snowy field and a small black dog in that
field, taking a photo of a distant grey object, is that enough to get
the correct averaging? Or do I need to compensate for the dominance of
the snowy field within the frame?

In other words, does the meter average the difference between the
darkest and the brightest objects in the frame, or the total amount of
darkness and brightness in the frame?

Thanks again, y'all. I do appreciate your patience.

If I remember correctly, you started this thread that you're shooting
with a K1000?

The K1000 meter averages the entire frame. No additional weight is
given to the center.

If the scene is mostly brighter than 18% gray, the meter
recommendation will be under-exposed, you have to "over-expose" to
compensate and get the correct exposure.

If the scene is mostly darker, the meter recommendation is
over-exposed, and you have to "under-expose" to compensate.

Blue skies opposite the sun, sunlit grass and weathered asphalt paving
are all reasonable approximations of 18% gray. If nothing else, fill
the viewfinder with one of these and set your exposure, then re-frame
the scene.

That's great!

That's basically what they say in the books about scientific/engineering
writing. The very first thing a writer has to recognize are these
three factors: audience, purpose, and occasion.
The first, audience, defines "what do they know?", "why are they
reading?", "what expectations (and biases?) they have?"
The second, purpose, can be "to perform" or "to persuade".
The last one, occasion, defines things like format, formality,
deadlines, politics, etc.
>From these considerations, the questions and the rationale you listed
follow.

I was teaching this material to physics major senior students just a
week ago in my course "The Art of Scientific Communication".
If anyone is interested in reading, - I have a list of a few good books
that discuss these and related topics in detail in a rather clear language:

As I said, more of the sign isn't critical, but if the word "Festival" were

You did well in dealing with the strong back light. Not that important, but is
there a little more of the sign available?
Really nice catch, Bob!

Did you manual focus? If you're shooting wide open, and your autofocus is off
by even a relatively small amount, your results will be soft. The performance
of this lens on my K20 is what first convinced me that fine focus adjustment is
a necessity. I've since seen that the FA50/1.4 required more adjustment than
any of my DA or DA* lenses.

Walt,
We saw the first one sitting on a fire plug along the side of the road.
We stopped and watched for a while and #2 joined him.
They seemed to be feeding on bugs in the grass.

Well, B&W is my "default", but there are times that the photo would
make very little sense were it not in colour. I kind of feel that I
"have to" leave it colour, not that I "want to", if you know what I
mean.

This is one of those cases where colour is simply required.

Thanks for your kind words, and thanks to everyone else who looked and
commented.

Hope you enjoy. Comments welcome.
