My first in-depth review of a lens published

2011-02-16 Thread Boris Liberman

Hi!

Though PentaxForums does not seem to be in big favor here, I did
participate in the recent round of user in-depth reviews over there. So
here it is: my first published review:

http://www.pentaxforums.com/reviews/pentax_fa_20mm_review.php

There are few misprints that I hope will be hammered out by the forum team.

Have your say. Brutal and honest is good.

Re: My first in-depth review of a lens published

2011-02-16 Thread AlunFoto
Since you point out its convenience for film, perhaps you should have
included some words on performance in the gelatine world? The
"aberrations" rating would probably look quite different because of
the lens' droplet distortion towards the corners, for example. Sample
variation was also a big issue with this lens, IIRC. Especially with
regards to centering.

When I look at some of my shots, from the days of the *istD, I see
purple-green aberrations increasing towards the corners. Mine was not
perfectly centered, so it's more noticeable on the left side of the
images.

My first thought was "wow, that requires a very delicate approach."

I think of birth as being firmly on the "precious" side of life's
moments, but it's a tough moment. It involves more drama and pain than
do many ways of passing away, for example. And there are at least two
individuals intimately involved, sharing the toughness.

I think I would have emphasised "precious" over "fragile" for that
situation. Not because I'm afraid of showing the toughness of the
situation, but rather because birth ties associations to "hope", "new
start", "infinite potential" and "bright future". It's something about
the way my brain wants to weave a story, I suppose.

Was Wire Welder, Now Gelatin Silver look on Inkjet

2011-02-16 Thread Paul Stenquist
Epson Exhibition Fiber paper has the look of a gelatin silver fiber-based paper
with slight texture and mild lustre. Some other inkjet papers are very close
copies of darkroom papers as well. Of course all modern BW darkroom printing
paper is gelatin silver. That's the chemistry not the paper look.

I think Christine is right that the "depth" one feels in looking at a print
from a large format neg is partly due to the format. Large format provides
incredible detail in the focal range but minimal depth of field, even with
relatively wide lenses. That translates to perceived depth.

Thanks, Bob.

I recently had this entire gallery printed in a small book for mom to keep. So
much more fun to flip through than a binder with regular prints in it (or
online).

The baby (!) is almost two years old now (ok, 18 months).. walking, talking,

Mine, too. I share your puzzlement about them reattaching without surgery.

Puzzles me as well. When my bicep detached itself from my shoulder the
surgeon told me he had to dig pretty deep into the arm with forceps to find
the tendon so he could pull it up to it's original point of attachment.
Takes a little while to get it stretched too. I understand the Achilles
tendon behaves the same way, as do to varying degrees most of the muscles
that when relaxed are stretched by opposing muscles ie: biceps / triceps.

In my case, the muscle did not contract when the rupture occurred. During
surgery the orthopedist found that the tendon had become calcified at the
attachment and just snapped off. While detached at the primary point of
attachment, it was not completely detached. In order to make the repair he had
to snip about an inch off the end of the tendon. Then in order to do the
reattachment the foot had to be tipped down to bring the heel closer to the
shortened tendon. He was concerned that when he took the cast off the foot
would not be return to the normal position, that he'd have to bring it back
gradually, that I'd have to remain on crutches a month or two longer. However,
when the cast was taken off, the foot easily returned to the normal position.
We attributed that to the fact that I've been doing yoga for most of my adult
life.

GESO: Photo walk on a warm February day

2011-02-16 Thread Walter Gilbert

 Hi all,

We had an unseasonably warm day here in western Kentucky, so I thought
I'd take the cameras out and see what I came up with. I filled up a
roll of Plus-X 125 on the K1000 using my 135/2.5 and will have them
developed soon. On my K-x, I used my K-50/1.4 -- everything shot at
f/16 just to get a feel for it. I had mixed results, but all in all,
was happy with the results. I'm still learning the lens, obviously --
but, when I get it right, I really love the results. Anyhoo ... here's
the link:

I have the pro and it's working like mentioned in the add. The weight
reduction effect is noticable and a plus is you can remove the shoulder pad
and connect the two smaller remaining straps and use it as a wrist strap.

I like that article.

For those people who "like to see what an image looks like straight out
[of] the camera", just think for a moment how you are going to see it.

On a monitor? But that depends on the monitor and its calibration. And
even if you used a calibration tool, if you used it on a different
monitor (especially a different model), the result won't be exactly the
same.

Out of a printer? But it will come differently from different printers.
Did you say ICC profiles? But that is not much different from a display
calibration (see above).

Remember that even eye of different people will see the same picture
differently. More over, your own eye will see the same picture
differently, depending on your condition. Because your eye's "ICC" that
is loaded in your brain can be fooled very easily by many-many factors
(light around, your health, mood, etc.).

No matter what media you use (film, digital, human eye, ...) - you
always have a "transfer function" that has at least one calibration
(e.g. your eye), - and that calibration can depend on many conditions.

I'm not a cat person myself, so the subject is only OK for me! But, a
distinct improvement with the exposures, Jeffery, you seem to be nailing
that. For the moon shot, if memory serves me right you need to overexpose
by 2-3 stops compared with the automatic meter setting to get a bright moon
surface (correct me if I'm wrong, PDML'ers!)

Hi Walt - some nice shots there, but I felt that some of them were softer
than I would expect. 9423 is one example, but in others, like the two b&w

believe that converting to monochrome is best done using only one channel,
and I'm sure one of the gurus here will know which one!

Re: OT: The Myth of the Unmanipulated Image

2011-02-16 Thread Boris Liberman

The man's right.

I think that this whole issue stems from the more general concept. Often
we would confuse our personal perception of something with its general
counterpart. As a consequence, we would project our own perception and,
in this very case, call an image "true to life" whereas the notion of
what is "true" is different for every single one of us. But without
noticing that "true to life" of mine may be different from that of
another person, I would engage myself in a heated debate with them,
although in many cases such a debate would be pointless from the beginning.

To that end, I can only recall once in a lifetime (so far) experience of
visiting a photo exhibition in Chicago with fellow PDMLers. That was a
blast in many aspects, including that of being able to actually talk
with someone about what I saw knowing that they are a kindred spirit
that would most likely understand me better.

You may be right, Jostein. It is just that in principle I should have
been able to provide full size JPGs and I don't have those for my film
