so that by the time the sun gets into its stride, we are almost
finishing the ride. this was a group ride, so it started late, it was
pretty hot, so that kind of delayed things. my average for such long

our roads being what they are especially during /immediately after

thing: you are already shooting RAW (you are, I hope) and you can
always adjust the WB to whatever you want later. Cloudy is like "warm
daylight/flash" so it gives skin tones a healthy glow.
That's what I eventually settled on after getting some very, very cool
(and not in the colloquial sense) results from AWB. And I agree -- it
worked much better. I was able to salvage just about every shot I took,
and the skin tones were extremely natural-looking, if oversaturated --
which was my fault for not bumping it back down after ticking it up for
some flowers and such.

I wasn't shooting RAW on those shots, since I needed to turn them around
pretty quickly, but I have gotten into the habit of doing that these
days, after spending a year shooting strictly in JPEG under the false
impression that the K-x's compression engine was /just/ that good.

In that crazy room with mixed light sources, I imagine that on a sunny
or hazy day the windows will win and the light will be 70-80%
daylight-ish temp with "fill" from both fluorescent and tungsten. You
should be ok with Daylight or Cloudy.

You're going to have a lot of blue highlights from those dropped
tungsten lamps I bet. You could reduce the blue saturation in
Lightroom's colour tweaker sliders.
Unfortunately, I don't have LR. I'm still using an ancient copy of
Photoshop 7, which worked pretty well on those shots when I desaturated
it around 15 - 20% across the spectrum and then knocked the reds and
yellows down just a bit more on top of it. That really brought out the
detail, as well.

Here's another obscure one: take a shot of something neutral gray (I'm
assuming you didn't bring a gray card) and you can use that to improve
your WB later on (Lr or Ps). I find that the back covers of many
keyboards (musical ones) are gray. There's often one to be found on a
stage.
Great tip! I don't know why I hadn't thought of it. Definitely one to
file away for future reference.

If you go spot metering, meter off of faces. They are close enough
to 18% grey so the meter is about right.

Raise the ISO higher than you think is reasonable. :) Either the
camera's ISO is great (eg K-5, K-x etc.) or you can use Lightroom or
a noise-reduction plugin, or simply go black and white and call the
grain art.

Take the fastest lens(es) you've got. Learn to like (or at least get

If the action is too fast for manual focusing, pre-focus on a point

Raise the ISO higher than you think is reasonable. :) Either the
camera's ISO is great (eg K-5, K-x etc.) or you can use Lightroom or
a noise-reduction plugin, or simply go black and white and call the
grain art.

Take the fastest lens(es) you've got. Learn to like (or at least get
along with) their field of view.

If the action is too fast for manual focusing, pre-focus on a point
and snap when the action gets to that point. Be prepared to have a
very small keeper rate.

2011-08-15 Thread Jeffery Johnson
After I wrote and sent my comment, I remember doing the same thing when it
comes to spotting things that normally are not obvious. Especially after I
have gotten back into taking captures. It also helps that while out on my
nature walks I am always trying to keep an eye out and trained on areas of
the woods that are different colors or shadows that are moving about and the
different sounds around me.

I only delete shots that are totally blown from my mac. And still keep backup
copies of everything, straight off the card, on my Linux box.

A very similar thing happened to me with this photo:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/4902762069/in/set-72157624636199391

I forgot that the 16-50 was on manual focus and didn't notice it when I was
photographing the Veyron with the other bug in the background. When I was
sorting photos, I realized the upper right corner was a better picture than the
one I was trying to take.

Re: geso the last night of the Rent Party

2011-08-15 Thread Walt Gilbert

Thanks for all the advice, Bruce.

I do most of those to one extent or the other, though I have a tough
time making myself bump the ISO up, even though the camera is capable of
it. I never go above 3200 unless it's just to show someone that the
camera will do it. I should probably get over that, huh?

Being prepared for the very small keeper rate, on the other hand --
that's my forte!

I usually keep my camera in center-weighted, average metering, as I've
been less than impressed with the matrix metering in the past. And I
agree that does tend to produce better results to my eye.

Where I have the most difficulty is in a situation like the one I was in
most recently -- indoors during mid-day, huge windows with lots of
sunlight under a hazy sky in a room with very high ceilings with
recessed fluorescent bulbs, plus dropped fixtures (about 7 ft or 2.5 m
high) with incandescent bulbs, PLUS some very, very white light spilling
in from a kitchen area, just off to the right. All of this in a room
with fairly bright yellow walls.

I got some crazy-looking colors out of that one. The AWB just threw up
its hands and said, "Your guess is as good as mine, dude."

Thanks again!

Walt

Had big storms here - perhaps partly to blame from the roller-coaster
ride of service-no-service on Time Warner Cable...

"The service has been disrupted in -Your- area - we are working hard to ..."

Both the Tv and INternet went on Sunday afternoon - If I had had their
phone service, that would have been out too. Glad I kept the land line

and cell phone is different all together

couldnt work or watch the PGA golf or movies or play scrabble or go out
shooting as the weather was fierce...

about 11 pm it was up for about two hours... got a bit done, then
it failed again . On in the morning for a slim hour or so...
etc...

One thing if TV is off -- I can still work and do email. or of the
internet is down and least I could watch Sunday night TV...

has never happened before here - realise how dependent I am on it.

So if I'm less chatty for a bit for a day or so you'll know I'm
trying to catch up with necessary stuff

It was completely spontaneous, Bulent.

I try to be prepared for anything interesting that happens in a photo
session. Going into it, I have a few ideas I want to try but they are
only sketches. In this one, as we often do, my wife was assisting. Part
of her job is to engage the subject/model -- chat with them, joke
around; stuff I'm not good at when I'm concentrating. Something Louise
said to our model made her go into a convulsion of silent laughter ...
click, click, click. Photo gold. :)

For the past two years there's been a weekly dance in SF called The Rent Party.
Lindy hop in one room, Blues in another. For various reasons, they decided to
close up shop and last night was their final night, with two live bands.

The lindy room had a couple of lights in the middle of the room aimed at the
floor, but the musicians were primarily illuminated by a couple of lights aimed
at the wall behind them. The blues room was light by four clamp lights, with
red bulbs bounced off the walls. Two of which were behind the musicians.

I also didn't want to use flash, because it's rather obnoxious when you're
dancing in a dark room to have a strobe go off in your face. So, all in all,
the lighting was quite challenging. There were a few shots where I just took
the bad lighting and tried to see what I could do with it, pushing it even
further over the edge in post processing.

Not everything is quite as sharp as I'd like, but I think I got some fun shots

Too Many Photos?

Got it in one. :)

Actually, it's only partly TMP: I am irked by the poor behaviour of the
Flickriver presentation when the number of shots is large. I try to
scroll and the Javascript starts its clumsy machinations -- scrolling
drunkenly back and forth while attempting to preload a bunch of large
images.

I find I'm happier with the trad grid thumbnail layout these days. I can
browse the thumbs and choose a couple to inspect. If I like what I see I
will walk through more of the gallery. Flickriver (and all the other
"infinite-list" brethren) doesn't give you that option. Either you wait
for all the fullsize images to load or you get nothing.

Re: PESO - Doggy in the Window

2011-08-15 Thread Paul Stenquist
Thanks Bob. In truth, the Mopar shoot beat the crap out of me. Up and down the
ladder, laying on the ground, swapping lenses, up and down again. Nine cars
Friday, shooting 9 am to 7:30 pm. (I would liked to have started earlier and
finished later for the light, but you takes hat you can get.) Fortunately, half
of Saturday was rained out, so I only had to shoot four, and all of Sunday was
rained out. But it was nice to get out with Grace on Sunday afternoon and shoot
some stuff for the plain old hell of it.

Great shot.

I can just imagine in a few years time, Grace won't be able to travel any place

The lindy room had a couple of lights in the middle of the room aimed at the
floor, but the musicians were primarily illuminated by a couple of lights aimed
at the wall behind them. The blues room was light by four clamp lights, with
red bulbs bounced off the walls. Two of which were behind the musicians.

I also didn't want to use flash, because it's rather obnoxious when you're
dancing in a dark room to have a strobe go off in your face. So, all in all,
the lighting was quite challenging. There were a few shots where I just took
the bad lighting and tried to see what I could do with it, pushing it even

Not everything is quite as sharp as I'd like, but I think I got some fun shots

Interesting that you call that a century. The one ride I did of that length
they called a metric double.

I've never drafted a truck, but back in college when I did longer rides, I did
a lot of wheelsucking.

Perhaps the best one was the time I rode the Davis Double Century solo. My
goal was to be back by dark, and when I was about 50 miles out it looked like
there was no way I was going to make it. Then a tandem went past like I was
standing still, so I asked if I could draft. They said "no problem" and I
jumped in behind them. Within a couple of miles the draft line had grown to
about 30 bikes.

The reason the tandem was running so late was that at the start of the ride
there are all these huge packs and draft lines of 50, maybe 150 bikes. Every
year, someone will see a cop car at one of the farm road intersections and
before they notice the cop is controlling traffic will slam on their brakes to
keep from running the stop sign that they were going to blow off. It is not a
good thing when someone suddenly slams on their brakes in the middle of a draft
line.

On another ride (I think it was the metric double that I did without training,
on a bike without a front derailleur, I was chatting up a girl I had caught up
with and she said she needed to back off the pace. I said she could draft me
if she wanted. With her back there I slipped into the zone and pretty much
forgot about everything until a while later, I heard a voice saying "you've
pulled the line for a quite a while, I can lead if you want". I looked back and
there was a long draft line behind me.

Re: geso the last night of the Rent Party

2011-08-15 Thread Bruce Walker

Some quick advice, Walt.

Switch away from matrix metering; go with center-weighted or spot.
Chances are the stage lights are focused on the performers, so they're
the brightest things in the room.

If you go spot metering, meter off of faces. They are close enough to
18% grey so the meter is about right.

Raise the ISO higher than you think is reasonable. :) Either the
camera's ISO is great (eg K-5, K-x etc.) or you can use Lightroom or a
noise-reduction plugin, or simply go black and white and call the grain art.

Take the fastest lens(es) you've got. Learn to like (or at least get
along with) their field of view.

If the action is too fast for manual focusing, pre-focus on a point and
snap when the action gets to that point. Be prepared to have a very
small keeper rate.

I really need to learn how to work better in mixed lighting
situations. I've lost some potentially nice shots because I don't
know what's going to freak out the metering.

The lindy room had a couple of lights in the middle of the room aimed
at the floor, but the musicians were primarily illuminated by a
couple of lights aimed at the wall behind them. The blues room was
light by four clamp lights, with red bulbs bounced off the walls. Two
of which were behind the musicians.

I also didn't want to use flash, because it's rather obnoxious when
you're dancing in a dark room to have a strobe go off in your face.
So, all in all, the lighting was quite challenging. There were a few
shots where I just took the bad lighting and tried to see what I
could do with it, pushing it even further over the edge in post
processing.

Not everything is quite as sharp as I'd like, but I think I got some

Re: OT: the heady feeling of drafting

2011-08-15 Thread Drew
My father-in-law told me once of an incident that happened to him
he was bus driver back in the days when town buses had the open platform
at the rear where passengers could jump on and off. He was bringing a
bus back to the main depot from one of the smaller ones, as he was not
in service he was travelling about 40 mph along a long straight road, he
put the indicator on and braked to turn into the depot. There was a
horrible clatter and cyclist and his bike were suddenly right up the
front of the bus next to him in the driver's seat. The poor chap had
been drafting him but couldn't get out of the way when he braked and
'used' the open platform at the rear to get on-board. He apparently
'only' broke his leg and got cuts and bruises.

Drew.

Fastest I've been on my bike is 36mph, which I clocked on my GPS on a lovely
long downhill in Brittany 2-3 years ago. I could have gone faster, but I got
so shit scared that I slowed right down. I'll never win the TdF.

I did a similar pace a couple of years before that on a Roman road leading
into Dorchester. From the top of Eggardon Hill, which is an Iron Age
hillfort at about 250m, there's a long shallow descent to 70m over 10km to
just outside Dorchester. The road is more or less dead straight, and
deserted. An exhilarating ride.

The next day I fell off at 2mph and broke my wrist.

That's only a problem if you trust the metering. The short answer is that
bright lights in the photo will freak out the metering, so you have to go to
manual (easy to do with K and M lenses), meter on what you care about, then
take a test shot without the bright area in the frame, chimping the histogram.

I take advantage of digital being so cheap by using my camera as a hand held
light meter. I almost always take a quick test, throwaway, shot to check the
metering, and to look for anything else I forgot.

Thanks to everyone who commented. I was kind of lucky, because it
rained a bit, then stopped. I was on my way home as it looked like it
might start up again and passed by this pond when the rain started up
again very gently, so there were only these few drops on the water. I
snapped about 6 shots (two sets of brackets of three) and a few
seconds later it started raining heavier. I continued to snap, but I
knew that there would be so many rain drops on the water that those
latter shots wouldn't be compelling.

Subsequent viewing proved me right.

;-)

Luckily, one of the six worked - just the right amount of drops in the
right places. Sometimes it's just about "being there"...

;-)

Thanks again. Glad you all liked.

Hi all,

I grabbed this shot this evening while I was walking around
in the front yard this evening. All but about a dozen
or so blossoms are gone on this tree, and I just happened to
catch this one out of the corner of my eye from a pretty
good distance -- say, 25 feet give or take. And it
looked like a good bokeh opportunity.

Again, I had the K-50/1.4 on the K-x:

ISO 560, 1/500 sec, f/3.5, Manual

Any input appreciated. So do as you will.

Best,

Walt

Re: PESO: Mimosa Sunset

2011-08-15 Thread Walt Gilbert

Thanks, Bob!

I was actually a little distracted by those highlights myself. I'm
pretty ham-fisted when it comes to tweaking specific areas of images,
unfortunately. In fact, I'm a bit of a dunce when it comes to most of
the functions of Photoshop and other similar software. Here's my
attempt at toning down those highlights:

http://www.flickriver.com/photos/walt_gilbert/6045587075/

I think the idea is much better than my execution would suggest.

Thanks for the input, in any event. I'll keep tweaking it until I get a
better blending of the colors.
