It's the publishers who need one of these.

The other day we had a nutcase try to jump from the public gallery into the
debating chamber in Parliament. Photographs of the public gallery are
expressly forbidden, to ensure that anyone who does cause a fuss (protests etc)
will not get media attention, and the point of this rule is to discourage them.

Well, one of our country's biggest newspapers got a photo of this guy being
restrained and published it. And now they're whining like spoiled little
children after being punished. The Speaker of the House is one person you
don't screw with. Anyone who can keep a room full of politicians under control
is not going to take any crap from an editor.

IMHO a hood can offer plenty of protection as whatever you land on will need to
either destroy the hood or protrude into it to reach the glass (except maybe
those collapsible rubber ones). I know this sort of thing has been discussed
here a few times and I wouldn't be surprised if the usual level of consensus
resulted.

I'm curious now to know what it costs to replace a front element in addition to
the near-inevitable barrel / filter ring repairs. I know this would vary a lot
with the exact lens.

> I have had other accidents where I banged up the filter, but the the lens

I've had a few little accidents too but only three (I think) with damage, two
of which were just broken hoods.

The only thing worse than breaking your own gear is breaking someone else's. I
dropped a Pentax 67 400mm lens (the old outer-bayonet model) in the shop once.
A heart stopping moment but it landed in a box of soft camera cases.

Dave

Re: GESO: Photo walk butterflies

2011-10-08 Thread Walt Gilbert

Thanks, Ann.

I guess my favorite would have to be 3262, since it's the same kind of
butterfly, but I managed to catch it with its wings spread, just as it
was taking flight. I had a really hard time catching one like that,
since they tend to keep them closed when they're at rest.

And, yes, they were tough today, as it was a pretty warm day here for
October -- mid-80's -- so they were darting around a lot and generally
active.

But, I do like the one you picked, too. It seemed to have the best
detail of all the ones I took.

Thanks again!

Thanks Steve. I remain unconvinced, but your comment about resale value is
about the only comment that seems to make any sense. Nobody yet has been able
to point to any loss of functionality from damage to the LCD. Several have
commented that damage to the protective covering can be a nuisance, to which my
solution would be to leave off the protective covering.

Hi all,

Took Mr. Larry's K100Ds out with the Tokina SZ-X 28-200 f/3.5-5.3 for a
couple of hours today -- and, man, do I like that combination! I managed to
finally get some butterfly images this year.

I tell you, that lens is the best $20 I've ever spent. It's not pretty, and
there's no snap whatsoever in the aperture. But, fortunately, it's a
functional A lens, and I just love the images it produces.

Any thoughts, comments and/or critiques are most welcome.

(Thanks again, Larry! I hope I don't "lose" your camera!)

2011-10-08 Thread Larry Colen
At a flea market today, there was a woman selling a spotty with a 50/1.4
supertak for $40. I was tempted, but I already have two of the lenses and two
or three spotties. Her other lenses were various vivitars, nothing to get very
excited about.

I must be feeling the economic pinch when I'm not picking up lenses on the
cheap.

Okay, that works for you. But I've never damaged a front lens element in 50
years of photography. I did bend one filter ring 35 years ago. I can't see
putting a $50 filter on a $1000+ lens. If I was convinced that I couldn't keep
from damaging my equipment without filters, I don't think I would invest in
good glass. Because a filter renders good glass, mediocre.

In the fall color is king but sometimes it is just the light coming
through the trees that intimates the end of one season and start of the
next. C&C welcomed.

http://donspix.posterous.com/picnic-season-comes-to-an-end-photo

Color is king because of what it does to the light. I like the photo.

Not to nit pick, but it seems to me that light is king because of what it
does to color.
Go look at a pretty fall scene in the early sun lit morning, then go back in
mid day and compare.

Perhaps I did not make my meaning clear. What I meant is that LIGHT is
what makes color the king of fall.

Interesting, I'd be interested to hear more details. I've heard the
stories of Pentax lenses being used as ash trays without the
slightest damage so I figured you'd have to try pretty hard to
scratch one.

Myself, I always have either a hood or a cap on my lenses. I
consider UV filters to be superfluous, but they're not as bad as
someone using a lens with a hood fitted in its "backwards" position.
That's fingernails on a blackboard to me

A lens cap provides no protection while you are actually taking
photographs. The lens hood does not always adequately protect the front
element.

I slipped & fell while taking photographs. The camera hit the ground
lens first.

The lens did not have a filter. I put a bad ding (like a chipped car
windshield) in the front glass that showed up in every photo I
subsequently took with that lens, so that I ended up having to replace it.

I have had other accidents where I banged up the filter, but the the
lens itself was not damaged.

Great job Dave - one of my son's photography class projects was on
similar lines - I know how you did the blue swirlies, but how did you do
the others?

There are other qualities of light too. Directionality and how sharp/diffuse
it is will affect shadows. In early morning or late afternoon, the light is
coming from one side. Just before sunrise and after sunset, it is a
directional, but diffuse light.

Re: Clear Packing Tape on LCD

2011-10-08 Thread Bipin Gupta
I have experimented with LCD clear film protectors on my cameras, and
phones and have found bubbles form on the cheaper Walmart type
purchases. A friend of mine gave me a complimentary clear film from
Palm Inc. I could tell it was extremely high quality and went on my
K20D perfectly - absolutely no bubbles. It's been on for 21/2 years
now and I have not noticed any curling at the edges. Of course I had
to cut it to size for the K20D LCD screen. I can see no deterioration
of the image on the LCD whatsoever.
Best of all it comes of very easily - no pulling force required - and
can be stuck back again.
I can positively recommend use of protective film. It has protected my
LCD screen as I can see plenty of scratches on the film, so much so
that I must replace it with a new one.

Great stuff, Mark.

Glad to see that you're still shooting b&w film. I've been using the MZ-S

blowing the dust off of my Mamiya TLR and working with that, too.
Processing the film seems a like a real bother, though, after the ease of
downloading digital to the computer.

Maybe the collective wisdom of the list could help me:

I'm trying to export a PDF file from lightroom or photoshop. ICM in
the printer driver is disabled.
To my surprise the resulting pdf file looks different on screen.

Windows 7 box and a dell U2410 monitor set to AdobeRGB and Device
profile in Windows Color Management set to Adobe RGB, viewing
conditions profile to System Default also tried WCS for ICC viewing,
No calibration tools used.

I would except the LR picture and PDF picture to match on screen??
